Dominic Green: Mixing memory & desire (New Criterion)
… Modiano was not well known in the English-speaking world before 2014. He was too French, too allusive; too local in style and subject matter. The Nobel committee compared Modiano to Proust-not because he keeps writing the same book, but as an artist of memory. This, though, seems an odd comparison. Reading Modiano, the overwhelming impression is that he would like to forget everything.

President Obama rips Donald Trump's views on using "radical Islam" as a betrayal of America's values, saying that the use of the phrase "radical islam" will only strengthen ISIS's and other terrorist groups' efforts to be viewed as representatives of the entire religion.

Some clouds, it's been said, have a silver lining. But clouds can get even worse. Some of them have black linings, as shitty events get shittier. Those are the clouds we're talking about in this article. Here, for your depressing pleasure, are some of the worst events in history and their depressing epilogues which are so dark that no one can even talk about them.
James Francis "Jimmy" Durante (February 10, 1893 - January 29, 1980) was an American singer, pianist, comedian, and actor. His distinctive clipped gravelly speech, New York accent, comic language butchery, jazz-influenced songs, and prominent nose helped make him one of America's most familiar and popular personalities of the 1920s through the 1970s. He often referred to his nose as the Schnozzola (from the Yiddish schnoz [nose]), and the word became his nickname.
Durante was an active member of the Democratic Party. In 1933, he appeared in an advertisement shown in theaters supporting Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs and wrote a musical score entitled Give a Guy a Job to accompany it.

No, it's Jimmy Durante. I didn't think I'd enjoy his comedy, because of his unusual voice, & corny demeanor,
but I watched some of his 50's specials & he was really a hoot! I'd like to see any of his stuff from his early years.

Jimmy Durante! I still have a place in my heart for this guy, love him. When I was a kid, 10 years old or so, I started a Jimmy Durante fan club. I was the only member. I wrote a fan letter and told him I was the president of his fan club, it was true, I just didn't say I was the only member. God, we lived out in the woods in Northern Michigan, there wasn't anyone else around. Get off my case. Anyway he sent me back and autographed picture, that I kept around until I joined the Air Force. I don't know what happened to it after that. Maybe my mother took it with her when she moved to California.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page said on Thursday that the riff he is accused of stealing for the band's 1971 hit "Stairway to Heaven" is in fact a commonly used chord progression similar to a melody from the 1964 movie musical "Mary Poppins."
Page, with his ex-bandmate Robert Plant looking on, took the witness stand for a second day in a copyright infringement trial in a Los Angeles federal court.
The civil action, brought by a trustee for Randy Wolfe, the late guitarist for the American band Spirit, contends the British band stole the descending chromatic four-chord progression at the beginning of their signature song from Spirit's 1967 instrumental "Taurus."
Page, under questioning by an attorney for the plaintiff, repeatedly said he was not sure whether any similarity exists between "Stairway to Heaven" and "Taurus."
He was quicker to draw a comparison to "Chim Chim Cher-ee" in "Mary Poppins," when asked about a written declaration he gave for the lawsuit where he talked about "Stairway" and the more uptempo song from the Disney film.
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., center, and other Democratic senators call for gun control legislation in the wake of the mass shooting in an Orlando LGBT nightclub this week, at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, June 16, 2016. He is joined by Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J.; Rev. Sharon Risher, a clinical trauma chaplain in Dallas who lost her mother, Ethel Lance, in the racially motivated shooting at the historic Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, N.C., in 2015; Tina Meins, whose father, Damian, was a county employee in San Bernardino who was shot and killed at his office by a co-worker and his wife in 2015; Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.; and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass.

A nearly 15-hour filibuster led by Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut ended early Thursday morning after Republicans agreed to hold votes on gun control measures.
The Senate will vote on a measure banning gun sales to people on the terrorist watch list and a provision requiring background checks at shows and over the internet. Republicans may also offer their own gun control measures.
The filibuster comes just days after a shooting in Orlando that killed 49 people and wounded dozens others. Murphy, joined by most of his Democratic colleagues, recalled his own state's loss of 27 people during the 2012 Newtown shootings and demanded a serious response.
"I've had enough. I've had enough of the ongoing slaughter of innocents, and I've had enough of inaction in this body," Murphy said during the filibuster, according to an NBC News report.
Democrats in Congress have pushed the gun control issue in the days following the shooting. In the House of Representatives, Democrats walked out in protest following a moment of silence led by GOP Speaker Paul Ryan.
International groups and celebrities, backed by millions of foreign petitioners, have rallied against an annual dog meat festival in the Chinese city of Yulin: but the protests may have backfired, residents say, spurring more people to eat man's best friend.
"My store's dog-meat sales are much higher than before, last year was up more than 50 percent," the owner of Yulin Number One Crackling Dog Meat Shop told AFP.
The city, deep in the poverty-stricken southern Chinese region of Guangxi, has drawn international fury for the beating and boiling alive of animals in the belief that the more frightened the dogs, the tastier the meat, activists say.
More than 10,000 animals are killed for the summer solstice festival, which has drawn the notice of celebrities such as British reality TV star Simon Cowell who denounced it as "barbaric".
This year's event is scheduled for June 21, but tensions are already growing.

Canadian lawmakers voted on Wednesday to alter the country's national anthem to make the lyrics gender neutral, a move that comes as the new Liberal government focuses on being more inclusive toward women.
The bill would change the English version of "O Canada" to remove the words "in all thy sons command" and replace them with "in all of us command."
The changes, brought forward as a private member's bill by a Liberal Party lawmaker, passed easily in the House of Commons, which is controlled by the Liberals. It now goes to the appointed Senate, which generally approves measures passed by the elected House.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made gender inclusivity a focus since he was elected last October and named an equal number of men and women to his 30-member Cabinet. It was the first time gender parity had been achieved by Canada's team of ministers.
The song was composed in 1880 and the original lyrics were in French. The English-language version, which is not a direct translation from French, was penned in 1908 and tweaked over the years. It was adopted as Canada's official anthem in 1980.
Last month was the hottest May in modern history, marking the 13th consecutive month that global temperature records have been shattered, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday.
That makes the longest such streak in the 137 years the record has existed.
"The globally averaged temperature over land and ocean surfaces for May 2016 was the highest for the month of May in the NOAA global temperature dataset record, which dates back to 1880," the agency said in a statement.
May's combined average temperature came to 1.57 degrees Fahrenheit (0.87 Celsius) above the 20th-century average for the month of 58.6 degrees Fahrenheit (14.8 Celsius).
That was 0.04 degrees Fahrenheit (0.02 Celsius) above the previous record for May, which was set last year.

Veteran British pop singer Cliff Richard will face no charges over allegations of decades-old sexual abuse, prosecutors said Thursday after a widely-criticised investigation that took two years.
Richard, 75, who was Britain's first home-grown pop star and considered the UK's answer to Elvis Presley, slammed the lengthy and very public probe, saying he had been "hung out like live bait".
The police attracted widespread criticism, including from lawmakers, over their handling of the case after striking a deal with the BBC to broadcast live their raid on Richard's home.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced Thursday that Richard would face no further action after reviewing the police case due to insufficient evidence.
Richard, who burst on the pop scene in the late 1950s, is the third biggest-selling artist in British singles chart history behind The Beatles and Presley.
Five directors of media giant Viacom, including chairman and chief executive Philippe Dauman, were replaced Thursday as the daughter of the elderly company owner Sumner Redstone strengthened her control.
Amid ongoing questions over whether the 93-year-old Redstone is mentally competent to sign off on major corporate moves, his National Amusements Inc, which has 80 percent control of Viacom, announced five new board members to the company.
Also replaced was director George Abrams, who together with Dauman was removed a month ago from the board of the Redstone family trust, in the first major move in the fight between them and Shari Redstone over her father's media empire.
Both are longtime confidants of Sumner Redstone and have alleged in court that Shari Redstone has isolated her father in order to take power in Viacom, where she is vice chair.
At least some of the names, including former Sony president Nicole Seligman, are widely reported to be close to Shari Redstone.

Astronaut Scott Kelly, back from his year in space on the International Space Station, said the "permanent effects we simply do not fully understand" that astronauts experience in space must be mitigated before developing space travel for people.
Kelly cited serious carbon monoxide and radiation exposure, vision problems and a loss of bone or muscle mass due to low gravity as some of the adverse effects space travel takes on astronauts. He had been aboard the ISS to learn more about the effects of space on one's body, with his twin brother Mark Kelly on earth as the control.
"The environment astronauts are exposed to while in space is unlike anything we experience here on earth," he said in remarks to the House Science, Space and Technology committee. "Exposure to the space environment has permanent effects we simply do not fully understand."
Kelly also detailed how his skin grew sensitive and irritable after not touching anything in space for nearly a year, and how his legs swelled because of the changes in gravity he experienced. He also started experiencing flu-like symptoms.
Kelly testified as the House committee considers requiring NASA to provide astronauts with lifelong health insurance.

The Bolivian government rejected on Wednesday a donation of hens offered by U.S. billionaire Bill Gates, as officials said the tech magnate needs to study up on the Andean nation's thriving poultry sector.
"How can he think we are living 500 years ago, in the middle of the jungle not knowing how to produce?" Bolivian Development Minister Cesar Cocarico told journalists. "Respectfully, he should stop talking about Bolivia."
The Microsoft founder and philanthropist recently said he would donate 100,000 hens to countries with high poverty levels, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa but including Bolivia.
Bolivia produces 197 million chickens annually and has the capacity to export 36 million, the local poultry producing association said.
