Connie Ogle: A non-Western guy's great Western (McClatchy Newspapers)
Q: Your brother Lin's first novel comes out this July. Did you inspire him to try his hand at fiction?
A: He gave me the idea of writing fiction. He wrote short stories in college. His book is a retelling of "Hamlet" set in Minnesota. It's very ambitious. My dad read his book, and he hadn't seen or read "Hamlet" in 40 years, so he got a movie version of "Hamlet," the Mel Gibson one, and he was a little nonplussed. He said, `I think Lin's a little better than Shakespeare.'

HBOs excellent miniseries 'John Adams' hits the stores this coming Tuesday (the 10th).
They sent me a free copy to review, so I've decided that starting today, and continuing through Tuesday (the 10th) the trivia question of the day will be a contest and all the questions skewed to John Adams (in some way).
On Wednesday (the 11th) somebody will win the copy of 'John Adams' (haven't quite figured out the specifics yet).
It's a very nice set - 3 discs; the entire 7-part miniseries; two featurettes: The Making Of John Adams and David McCullough: Painting With Words; and an onscreen viewers guide.
If it hadn't been for HBOs Robert Wuhl: Assume The Position going to video we wouldn't have a trivia question of the day.

Several weeks ago CostCo didn't have the usual brand of laundry detergent so had to buy another.
Didn't like the way it faded out the colors, and it was relegated to 'whites only'.
Weather gets warmer, the cats bring in fleas, and my ankles start itching, so it's Advantage time.
Thought the Advantage wasn't working because I didn't stop scratching.
That's when I noticed the rash.
After much cursing, filing my nails to nubbins, many ointments, salves and tinctures, seems I'm allergic to the damn laundry detergent, and I was done in by my socks.
OTOH, I'm very grateful I don't have any white underwear.

Lawyers for a Canadian television journalist being held as an enemy combatant in Afghanistan filed a lawsuit Wednesday accusing the Bush administration of holding him illegally and demanding his release.
Afghani native Jawed Ahmad, 22, has been held in Bagram, Afghanistan, for more than six months without being charged, according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia.
Ahmad was working for CTV, a Canadian television network, when he was detained in October 2007. Authorities accused him of being in contact with Taliban leaders, including having video of them and possessing their phone numbers, according to the complaint.
Attorneys with the International Justice Network compared Ahmad's case to that of Bilal Hussein, an Associated Press photographer who spent more than two years in U.S. military custody. Hussein initially was accused of working with Iraqi insurgents but was released in April after Iraqi judges closed his case.

Hollywood's "glass closet" may not be shattered, but with stars such as Ellen DeGeneres and T.R. Knight openly out and shows like "The L Word" proving popular in recent years, insiders say being gay or lesbian is no longer a career breaker for celebrities.
The California Supreme Court on Wednesday gave a final approval for gay marriages in the state, clearing the way for talk show host DeGeneres and her girlfriend of four years, actress Portia de Rossi, to marry as planned.
Actor Rock Hudson kept his homosexuality a secret for decades for fear it would hurt his ability to win leading-man roles. His death to AIDS-related illness in 1985 shocked Americans, and when DeGeneres publicly came out in the late 1990s it caused a media sensation.
But by early this decade, TV show "Will & Grace," about the lives of a gay man and straight woman, had become a critical and audience hit, a sign of increasing public acceptance.
Still, experts say a "glass closet" exists for some actors, but because many openly gay celebrities such as Knight, DeGeneres, De Rossi and Rosie O'Donnell are breaking barriers that have stood for years, that closet is cracking.
MSGOP pundit Keith Olbermann, who spotlights misbehavior nightly with his "Worst Person in the World" recognition, owes New York state for unpaid business taxes, according to a tax warrant notice.
And his conservative counterparts and bloggers are making sure the debt is fodder in the ongoing political commentators' feud.
Olbermann, the host of "Countdown," owes New York $2,269.50, according to a tax warrant obtained by The Associated Press. State Tax and Finance Department spokesman Tom Bergin said the debt recorded against the TV host's Olbermann Broadcasting Empire Inc., based in Los Angeles, is still open.
Bergin said the debt could have been resolved recently, but it has not yet been legally "satisfied" and so remains an open case.
Flick through a few channels on Japanese TV and Monta Mino is most likely there. And the world's most prolific television presenter, who just broke his own record for the most hours of live television in one week, says he wants to work even more.
Mino, whose real name is Norio Minorikawa, received a Guinness World Record certificate Thursday acknowledging his 22 hours and 15 seconds of live TV broadcasts in April. He broke the previous record - also set by Mino in November 2006 - of 21 hours and 42 minutes.
In counting the hours for the record, Guinness included Mino's appearances on various live shows on several TV channels.

A silk Persian rug dating from the 16th century or 17th century has sold for a record $4.45 million at auction, or about $729.87 per square inch.
The rug was sold by Christie's auction house Tuesday on behalf of the Newport Restoration Foundation. It had been expected to fetch up to $1.5 million.
The rug, which measures 7 feet, 7 inches by 5 feet, 7 inches, had been purchased by the late tobacco heiress Doris Duke in 1990. She left it to the foundation when she died.
Elisabeth Parker, head of Christie's rugs and carpets department, says there are only two other known rugs like it. She calls it an "amazing work of art" and says it has an intricate floral design and an unusually large number of colors, at 17.
Victoria Gotti, a newspaper columnist and the daughter of late Gambino crime family boss John Gotti, was sued on Thursday by HarperCollins Publishers for the return of a $70,000 advance on a memoir that was never written.
Gotti and HarperCollins signed a contract in 2005 for two books, including an untitled memoir, according to the lawsuit filed in New York state court, which accused Gotti of breach of contract.
Gotti, who was once a columnist for the New York Post, has written several books and was the star of the reality television show "Growing up Gotti."
HarperCollins is a unit of Rupert Murdoch's News Corpse.

Ozzy Osbourne has accepted undisclosed libel damages and an apology over a newspaper claim that he was ill at the Brit Awards.
The 59-year-old rocker sued over a story in the Daily Star that alleged he had toppled over twice just before the televised ceremony and that he was moved around the awards in an electric buggy.
Osbourne's lawyer, John Kelly, told a court in London on Thursday that none of the allegations were put to Osbourne or his representatives before they were published.
Express Newspapers' lawyer Kate Wilson said the publisher now accepts that the allegations were untrue.
A guitar stolen from country star George Jones 46 years ago in Texas is being returned to him by a man who says he bought it and tried repeatedly to give it back.
The acoustic Martin-000 is being returned to him by Larry Berry of Chandler, Texas, who said he bought it for $10 from two boys in his Fort Worth, Texas, apartment complex in 1962.
Berry said Wednesday he's been trying to reach Jones since the 1960s to return it, and finally got through this year.
"It'll be a big relief," Berry, a retired oil man, said by telephone. "I've written letters for years and called recording studios trying to find him. You can't believe how hard it's been."

A rare Brazilian stamp series known as the "Pack Strip" has sold for $1.9 million at an auction of early South American postage stamps.
The Siegel Auction Galleries says the 1843 series of "Bull's Eyes" stamps - considered the rarest among Brazilian collector stamps - was sold on Thursday to a buyer bidding by phone. It contains two 30-reis (ree-YAHS') denomination stamps joined with one 60-reis.
The auction house will add a 15 percent commission to the $1.9 million hammer price.
The auctioneer says the entire collection - with other offerings from Chile, Colombia, Argentina and Peru - could fetch more than $5 million.
Egyptian archaeologists unveiled on Thursday a 4,000-year-old "missing pyramid" that is believed to have been discovered by an archaeologist almost 200 years ago and never seen again.
Zahi Hawass, Egypt's antiquities chief, said the pyramid appears to have been built by King Menkauhor, an obscure pharaoh who ruled for only eight years.
In 1842, German archaeologist Karl Richard Lepsius mentioned it among his finds at Saqqara, referring to it as number 29 and calling it the "Headless Pyramid" because only its base remains. But the desert sands covered the discovery, and no archaeologist since has been able to find Menkauhor's resting place.
"We have filled the gap of the missing pyramid," Hawass told reporters on a tour of the discoveries at Saqqara, the necropolis and burial site of the rulers of ancient Memphis, the capital of Egypt's Old Kingdom, about 12 miles south of Cairo.
