Jerry M. Hatfield: What Accountability Won't do for Higher Education (irascibleprofessor.com)
Among the controversies in American higher education are the perceptions that many students arrive at college underprepared to do the rigorous work required, that too many graduate without the requisite skills to survive the modern workplace, and that there is inadequate accountability in higher education.
Garrison Keillor: "Simplicity of GOP: We are what we are" (chicagotribune.com)
Only one out of five Americans is willing to describe himself or herself as a Republican these days, and frankly I am tempted to become one of them. For the variety, and because they need me and because when I heard former Vice President Dick Cheney talk about the meaning of Republicanism the other day -- "We are what we are," he said -- I felt drawn to the simplicity and dignity of that. And I have never been a Republican, just as I've never been to South America, and that makes it tempting.

Will Harris: A Chat with Duff McKagan, Loaded, Guns 'n Roses, and Velvet Revolver bassist (bullz-eye.com)
"I've seen those gigs where bands will play and there are only ten people there, and they are pissed off. You can tell the band is pissed off, and it's always a bummer because, like, I've been that kid who goes, "No, but I came to see you play, and I don't notice there's only a few people here, because, y'know, I'm here."
Duff McKagan: Rock Has Changed, My (Facebook) Friends
Advertisers don't want anything close to danger anywhere even remotely close to their product being pimped. This makes for really safe and REALLY boring radio. ... You may wonder why it is that you hear the same 10 f**king songs on your local station. These 10 songs have been "tested" vigorously.
Meanwhile, with little notice or fanfare, the space shuttle Atlantis was launched Monday on what has been said is a critical and dangerous mission to repair the Hubble telescope in order to keep it operation for 5 more years until its replacement is ready. Fortino Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes, sometimes referred to as the "Charlie Chaplin of Mexico", is better known by what name?
Cantinflas
Source
Fortino Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes (August 12, 1911 - April 20, 1993) was a Mexican comedian and actor.
He earned wide popularity with his stage and film persona Cantinflas, usually portrayed as an impoverished campesino of pelado origin. The character came to be associated with the national identity of Mexico, and allowed Moreno to establish a long, successful film career that included a foray into Hollywood. Charlie Chaplin once called him "the greatest comedian in the world", and Moreno is often referred to as the "Charlie Chaplin of Mexico".

Alan J was first, and correct, with:
1. Lucy Liu
2. Cantinflas
Charlie answered:
#1) On December 16, 2000, the first such host was Lucy Liu.
#2) First knew of him for playing the French valet Passepartout in 1956's Around the World in Eighty Days (which I didn't see until years later). Reyes is best known as Cantinflas, though the origin of the name is obscure.
I read the book before I saw the film.
Marian the Teacher responded:
Lucy Liu and Cantinflas
Maria in Chicago replied:
Lucy Alexis Liu
Cantinflas
José-Ariel in San José noted:
First Asian-American to host SNL... my guess would be... Lucy Liu (I can't think of anybody else--if Bruce Lee were alive, he'd have hosted it for sure).
Second question:
Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes= ¡CANTINFLAS!
Sally said:
Would you believe that I can't bring up your page today (and it's almost 6 PM)? Needless-to-say, I am all a twitter (and not the Internet kind either)! (Charlie, Joe S, MAM, Alan, Marian, are you messing with me?) (Really??)
(JOKING!)
IAC, I asked a friend send me the questions for the quiz because he was able to access your page. (I'm expecting a T-storm any minute too.)
Here goes:
1) Lucy Liu becomes the first Asian-American woman to host SNL (and the second Asian-American movie star to host overall, with Jackie Chan).
AND
2) Fortino Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes, sometimes referred to as "Charlie Chaplin of Mexico," is better known as "Cantinflas."
PS: In the latter question, as I recall, "Cantinflas," was a hobo/beggar character, and (I think) did not help Mexico with it's image because people begin to identify all Mexican's that way. I'm just saying...
PPS: A day WO Marty's page is very stressful indeed!
MAM replied:
#1 Who is the first Asian American woman to host Saturday Night Live?
Lucy Liu, born 1968, Jackson Heights, Queens, New York to Taiwanese-Chinese immigrant parents. She played Ling Woo in the TV program 'Ally McBeal'.
#2 Fortino Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes, sometimes referred to as "Charlie Chaplin of Mexico", is better known by what name?
Cantinflas, who played the comical valet, Passepartout, to David Niven's
character of Phileas Fogg in "Around the World in 80 Days."
And, Joe S wrote:
Merrcy! This is such a time waster. I poured the water into my Bunn coffee maker, went to my computer and looked up the answers to the quiz, found them, went back to the kitchen just as the Bunn finished making a pot of coffee. Three minutes. Oh, the time waster was checking all pictures of Lucy, you know, to make sure I got the best one. That took about 30 minutes.

My grandson sent me an article from the ForteanTimes about cosmonauts that were 'lost in space'. Appaently there are some concerns that the astronauts going to the Hubble space telescope could be lost in space. Thus NASA has another shuttle on standby at its Florida launch site, ready to rush to the rescue if Atlantis is smacked by orbital debris and severely damaged.

In a neat bit of promotion, Jay Leno's last guest on the "Tonight" show will be the man who's taking over for him - Conan O'Brien.
James Taylor will perform on Leno's May 29 finale, the late-night host told a teleconference Thursday. And surprises are in store, he said.
"I have something really unusual and different planned, something really out of left field that we're going to end on. It's something really personal," Leno said, and has to do with the show and its staff.
The big names making the cut for Leno's final week of "Tonight" include Mel "Sugar Tits" Gibson, Prince and Billy Crystal - who was Leno's first guest when he took the show over from Johnny Carson in 1992.

City authorities in Mumbai demolished the shanty home of a "Slumdog Millionaire" child star on Thursday, forcing his family into the streets months after the Oscar-winning film shot him to global fame.
Azharuddin Ismail, 9, played the character of Salim as a child in the film, a rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing for love and money on a television game show.
Ismail's tarpaulin-covered home in a teeming slum was one of several shanties, illegally built along a drain, that were demolished by local authorities in Mumbai, India's financial capital and entertainment hub.
Earlier this year, there was an outcry after pictures emerged of "Slumdog Millionaire's" child stars living in squalor despite the movie's box-office success and eight Academy Awards.
Myanmar Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was charged Thursday with violating the terms of her house arrest after an American man swam across a lake to sneak into her home, her lawyer said.
Suu Kyi, whose detention was set to end May 27, could face a prison term of up to five years if convicted, said lawyer Hla Myo Myint. The trial is scheduled to start Monday at a special court at Yangon's notorious Insein Prison, where she was arraigned Thursday.
Human rights groups said they feared the trial would be used to justify another extension of Suu Kyi's yearslong detention despite international demands for her release.
The 63-year-old Nobel prize laureate has already spent more than 13 of the last 19 years - including the past six - in detention without trial for her nonviolent promotion of democracy, despite international pressure for her release.
Some Canadian television viewers still steamed over the country's military being trashed on a Fox News show two months ago will be able to keep the channel out of their homes.
Fox News is beamed into the homes of about 700,000 Shaw Communications customers.
The Fox News Red Eye show, which in March featured a group of pundits taking turns trashing Canada and its reliability as an ally, caused a national uproar, with the Canadian government calling it "despicable" and "disgusting."
Shaw Communications President Peter Bissonnette said customers now will have the option of having Fox News removed from their programming and replaced with another channel at no extra cost.
He said although viewers don't have to watch it, for many it has become a "moral issue" and they don't want it coming into their homes.

Richard Attenborough issued a reassurance today that he is still "very much alive and kicking".
The statement drew from Mark Twain's famous retort that reports of his death had been exaggerated.
"To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports regarding the demise of my career have been greatly exaggerated.
"Still recovering from a head injury sustained in a fall just before Christmas, it remains my intention to appear in the movie Ironclad later this summer and to take up offers to appear in two further films, one of them in Hollywood, during 2010.
A former FBI agent was sentenced Thursday to one year of probation for using the bureau's computers to dig up information on Hollywood executives involved in a prominent wiretapping case.
The former agent, Mark Rossini, was not working on the wiretapping case against Hollywood private eye Anthony Pellicano and was not authorized to look up the files.
But he admitted he used FBI computers illegally to search for files on powerbrokers related to Pellicano such as former superagent Michael Ovitz, entertainment lawyer Bert Fields and William Morris talent agency President James Wiatt.
Rossini admitted in court documents that he gave the files to a woman with whom he was in a close personal relationship - she was not named, but he was dating movie actress Linda Fiorentino - and she passed them on to an attorney for Pellicano

City prosecutors have charged Gerard Butler with misdemeanor battery in connection with a scuffle with a paparazzo.
Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan said the Scottish-born actor had a run-in with a photographer early on Oct. 7 in Hollywood after leaving a premiere party for the film "RocknRolla."
Butler's manager, Alan Siegel, said that the actor was forced to have his driver stop the car after a paparazzo repeatedly sped through red lights and almost struck two pedestrians.
The actor's attorney, Blair Berk, said Butler is not required to - and won't - appear in court on the charge.
Court records show attorneys on Monday asked for the dismissal of dueling lawsuits in Los Angeles between "Brothers & Sisters" actor Rob Lowe and a former nanny, Laura Boyce.
Similar lawsuits filed between Lowe and former nanny Jessica Gibson have been dismissed in Santa Barbara.
Attorneys for both women and Lowe sought the dismissals. There are no details on whether a settlement was reached.
A man was convicted Thursday of carving up cadavers donated to UCLA's medical school and selling the parts to unsuspecting medical research companies in a $1.5 million scheme.
Jurors found Ernest Nelson, 51, guilty of eight counts, including grand theft and tax evasion. Prosecutors said Nelson could face a maximum of 12 years in prison and they want him to repay $1.5 million to UCLA.
Prosecutors said Nelson and Henry Reid, the former director of UCLA's Willed Body Program, devised the scam in 1999.
Prosecutors said he bought the donated torsos, cut them up and kept them frozen in a rented warehouse until they were sold to companies that didn't know they had been improperly obtained.

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament was mugged outside an Atlanta studio where the band is recording, police said.
Three masked men dressed mostly in black came out of the woods behind Southern Tracks recording studio and attacked Ament and employee Mark Anthony Smith as they arrived in a rented Jeep late last month, DeKalb County police said.
Police say the men smashed three of the Jeep's windows and grabbed a Blackberry and two computers and demanded money. Ament jumped out of the passenger side and tried to run, but one of the men knocked him to the ground and stole his passport.
The men got away with $3,000 cash, along with computers and other equipment worth more than $4,000. Paramedics treated Ament for head injuries.
A federal court has barred top U.S. satellite television provider DirecTV Group from releasing ads that could give customers the impression that bankrupt Charter Communications Inc is liquidating or might stop offering cable TV service.
In a temporary restraining order released on Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Rodney Sippel said he acted to "prevent irreparable harm to Charter."
Charter sued DirecTV in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri on Monday, claiming that DirecTV attempted to exploit the fact that Charter filed for bankruptcy to win over customers.
Charter said DirecTV launched a national advertising campaign specifically targeted at Charter's 5.5 million customers. The campaign said there was no way that Charter could continue to provide more HD channels or exclusive programing, according to Charter.
Two seasonal Yellowstone National Park concession workers have been fired after a live webcam caught them urinating into the Old Faithful geyser.
Park spokesman Al Nash says a 23-year-old man on Tuesday was fined $750 and placed on three years of unsupervised probation for urinating, being off trail in a restricted area and taking items from the area. The man also was banned from Yellowstone for two years.
The second employee's case is pending.
The park's dispatch center was called after someone watching a webcam on the geyser saw six employees leaving the trail and walking on Old Faithful on May 4.
