Helaine Olen: Schneiderman's downfall is a sign of progress - of a certain kind (Washington Post)
Social change happens when what used to be tolerated in the recent past becomes unfathomable to us. It seems possible that #MeToo is reaching that stage. Schneiderman's supposedly quick political end was actually years in the making. It demonstrates how rapidly the conversation has changed around sexual harassment and violence - in the past year alone. Make no mistake. That's progress.
Tom Danehy: "Beatles vs. Stones: The showdown is this week at downtown's Rialto Theatre but Tom already knows who's the best" (Tucson Weekly)
But it wasn't just those two bands. For a ghetto kid, it wasn't all that hard to choose the Animals singing "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" over Herman's Hermits' "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter." However, I always listened to the Beatles, although they almost lost me with Sgt. Pepper's, which I considered the greatest anti-drug PSA of all time. Every time I hear anything from that album, I think of the old Richard Pryor line, "You need to stay off that narcotic. That stuff done made you null and void."
Richard "Red" Skelton (July 18, 1913 - September 17, 1997) was an American entertainer. He was best known for his national radio and television acts between 1937 and 1971, and as host of the television program The Red Skelton Show. He has stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work in radio and television, and also appeared in burlesque, vaudeville, films, nightclubs, and casinos, all while he pursued an entirely separate career as an artist.
Skelton believed that his life's work was to make people laugh; he wanted to be known as a clown because he defined it as being able to do everything. He had a 70-year career as a performer and entertained three generations of Americans. His widow donated many of his personal and professional effects to Vincennes University, including prints of his artwork. They are part of the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy at Vincennes.

Dave responded:
Red Skelton. He was on network TV from before my birth until I was in High School. Red played many characters, notably Clem Keddilehopper and a mime act as a Clown that looked like a classic Hobo of the '30s. In 1970 CBS cancelled "The Red Skelton Hour" along with other long running programs in the "Rural Purge"
with programs designed to appeal to the younger viewers that advertisers craved. The show was picked up by NBC for one more season but was then cancelled for the final time. Although Red Skelton's vaudevillian style of humor wasn't to my taste, I will say that Red certainly enjoyed himself, he laughed harder than anyone else at his own jokes.

That looks like Red Skelton to me. My mother enjoyed his show; I watched because she did. Would that kind of comedy hold up today? I doubt it. But as an innocent kid, I liked what he did.

That's Red Skelton. He was still on the TeeVee when I was a kid. I was on a

mugging for laughs, and looked and acted pretty much like an older version
of the guy in the lower right of the pic you used. It was like we were all
in a TV sketch with him for a few minutes; kinda nice. He died in 1997.

That's Red Skelton, I watched his TV show every week back in the 50s. Loved it. He played one of the only two clowns I ever liked. Freddy the Freeloader and the other being Emmet Kelly. Red had many other characters, loved them all.
So far so good on beating cancer for now. I'm doing fine. At the end of the month I'll be 16 months into an 8 month mean lifespan. And yesterday I went on a 7 mile hike and managed to keep up with the hiking group I was with. So, doing something right.
Still waiting for future test results and should see things headed in the right direction. I can say that it's not likely that anything dire happens in the short term so that means that I should have time to make several more attempts at this. So even if it doesn't work the first time there are a lot of variations to try. So if there's bad news it will help me pick the next radiation target.
I have written a "how to" guide for oncologists to perform the treatment that I got. I'm convinced that I'm definitely onto something and whether it works for me or not isn't the definitive test. I know if other people tried this that it would work for some of them, and if they improve it that it will work for a lot of them.
The guide is quite detailed and any doctor reading this can understand the procedure at every level. I also go into detail as to how it works, how I figured it out, and variations and improvements that could be tried to enhance it. I also introduce new ways to look at the problem. There is a lot of room for improvement and I think that doctors reading it will see what I'm talking about and want to build on it. And it's written so that if you're not a doctor you can still follow it. It also has a personal story revealing that I'm the class clown of cancer support group. I give great interviews and I look pretty hot in a lab coat.
So, feel free to read this and see what I'm talking about. But if any of you want to help then pass this around to both doctors and cancer patients. I need some media coverage. I'm looking for as many eyeballs as possible to read these ideas. Even if this isn't the solution, it's definitely on the right track. After all, I did hike 7 miles yesterday. And this hiking group wasn't moving slow. So if this isn't working then, why am I still here?
I also see curing cancer as more of an engineering problem that a medical problem. So if you are good at solving problems and most of what you know about medicine was watching the Dr. House MD TV show, then you're at the level I was at when I started. So anyone can jump in and be part of the solution.

Prodded by Democrats, the Senate is set late next week to vote on what could be the first step toward restoring net neutrality rules.
The Federal Communications Commission repealed the protections in December despite widespread public opposition and a request from 18 state attorneys general to delay the action over concerns that the comment process was corrupted by fraudulent messages. The repeal effort was led by Ajit Pai, who President Donald Trump appointed to chair the FCC.
A petition filed by Senate Democrats on Wednesday will force the net neutrality vote in the chamber, where it has a good chance of passing, perhaps as narrowly as 50-49.
According to Reuters, all of the chamber's 47 Democrats, the two independents who caucus with the party and Sen. Susan Collins(R-Maine) are expected to support the measure. That would outvote the remaining Republican senators, who are down one vote as Sen. John McCain of Arizona remains on medical absence. Potentially, other moderate Republicans could join Collins and back the effort.
The measure would then go to the House, where Republicans have a larger majority. And if it passes the House, the legislation would still need Trump's signature ? no sure thing, given that he put Pai in the position to lead the push overturning the Obama-era net neutrality rules.
Fox got three-series lighter on Thursday when it decided not to renew "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," "The Mick," and "Last Man on Earth," for a sixth, third and fifth season, respectively, just ahead of its upfront presentation in New York Monday.
Fans quickly took to social media to express their fury over the trio of cancellations (the "Nine-Nine" squad, in particular, was very vocal) and a response of that magnitude begs the question, "what was Fox thinking?"
All three shows (plus "Gotham") were tied as Fox's 13th highest-rated scripted programs out of 20 total shows. The only lower-rated scripted series currently are "L.A. to Vegas," "Lucifer," "New Girl" and "The Exorcist." "L.A. to Vegas" is still on the bubble, as is "Lucifer." "New Girl" is ending, and its 0.9 rating is at least partially reflexive of the fact that it premiered more recently than most series' current seasons, so the delayed viewing numbers are not complete. "The Exorcist" is a Friday show and it's going the way of the dodo.
And when looking at how competitors' calls factor into all this, the only lower-rated TV shows than "Nine-Nine," "The Mick," and "Last Man on Earth" that have been renewed on the Big 4 thus far are NBC's "A.P. Bio" and CBS' "Madam Secretary."
So far, the broadcaster has renewed "The Gifted," "9-1-1," "The Orville," "The Simpsons," "Bob's Burgers," "Family Guy," "Empire," "The Resident," "Star" and picked up "The Cool Kids," "The Passage," "Proven Innocent" to series.
The Senate voted Thursday to confirm Michael Brennan to a lifetime seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit ? a vacancy that Republicans prevented President Barack Obama from filling for six years.
The vote, 49 to 46, was entirely partisan. Until now, the seat was the nation's longest circuit court vacancy. It was empty since January 2010, and it had been up to Wisconsin's two senators to work with the White House to fill it. The reason it went unfilled for so long largely came down to one person: Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).
Obama nominated Victoria Nourse to the seat in July 2010. Johnson denied her a confirmation hearing for all of 2011 by refusing to turn in his so-called blue slip, a Senate tradition whereby home-state senators have the ability to stop or advance a judicial nominee in the Judiciary Committee. Nourse withdrew her nomination in early 2012, calling the system "broken."
Nourse had been recommended for the court seat by Wisconsin's judicial nominating commission. But after she withdrew, Johnson said he wanted a new system of picking judicial nominees. He disbanded the state's nominating panel and worked with Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) to create a new one. That took another year.
Johnson then said the panel couldn't put forward a 7th Circuit nominee until Obama nominated people to two other district court vacancies in the state. That added another year to the process. By the time the panel was seeking applications for the 7th Circuit, it was July 2014 and the seat had been empty for four years.
Rudy Giuliani (R-3 Divorces) is leaving his Manhattan law firm to focus solely on his new role on President Donald Trump's legal team.
The former New York City mayor originally planned simply to take a leave of absence from the law firm of GreenbergTraurig when he joined Trump's outside team last month.
But the law firm released a statement Thursday announcing that the parting would be permanent.
Giuliani said that he was stepping away "in light of the pressing demands of the Mueller investigation" into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
The ex-mayor said that his "sole concentration can be on this critically important matter for our country."
A sexuality expert says parents should ask their child's permission before changing their nappies - so they can set up a "culture of consent."
Deanne Carson made the suggestion on ABC News during a segment about teaching consent to young children, and many viewers have since expressed their confusion over the idea.
According to Carson, who describes herself as a "sexuality educator, speaker, and author" on Twitter, a culture of consent needs to start at birth.< /p>
To do so, she suggested parents ask their infants questions such as: 'I'm going to change your nappy now, is that okay?"
Because she is referring to babies, Carson admitted that they will not verbally respond.
