Helaine Olen: How Democrats can make Trump chaos a midterm issue (Washington Post)
Campaigning against Trump presents something of a challenge, after all. One takeaway from the 2016 election is that making the campaign sales pitch mainly based on Trump's character and accomplishments (or lack thereof) is a less-than-effective strategy.
That's Beany on the left, and Cecil in the middle. On the right is the villain whose business card read: "Dirty deeds done dirt cheap. Special rates for Sundays and holidays". What is the name of this doer of dastardly deeds?
Beany And Cecil is an animated television series created by Bob Clampett for the American Broadcasting Company. The cartoon was based on the television puppet show Time for Beany, which Clampett produced for Paramount Pictures company and its Paramount Television Network beginning 1949. The series was broadcast first as part of the series Matty's Funday Funnies during 1959, later renamed Matty's Funnies with Beany and Cecil, and finally Beany and Cecil in the USA. Another season was produced during 1988.
Although a children's show, it incorporated satirical references to current events and personalities which adults found entertaining, and the show also attracted adult viewers. Some of the plots and remarks were recognisable as lampoons of current political issues.
Beany Boy - A young, cupid-faced boy with a propeller beanie cap that allows him to fly (the "Beanycopter", complete with helmet and propeller, became a popularly marketed novelty). Beany is a good-hearted lad. In most episodes, Beany would be kidnapped by a villain or have a problem too hard to solve, crying "Help, Cecil! Help!" to which Cecil would reply "I'm a-comin', Beany-boy!" as he raced to the rescue. This has become something of a catchphrase.
Cecil (or "Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpent") - A large green sea serpent with a slight lisp. He is fiercely loyal to Beany but not terribly clever. Cecil's trusting good nature invariably results in him being taken advantage of by the bad people, and he often suffers a great amount of physical abuse (getting smashed flat, losing his head, having his skin burned off, being shattered to pieces), examples of cartoon physics. It was Cecil who cried "A Bob Clam-pett car-tooooooo-OOOOOOOOON!" at the opening of each episode.
Dishonest John (or "D.J.") - The villain. He is dressed formally like a Simon Legree character, and he is constantly scheming to foil Beany and Cecil's adventures. His catch phrase is a sinister "Nya-ah-ãhh!", and he occasionally refers to Cecil as a "tall toad", "worm" or "big salami" (referring to his big, limbless body). Whenever Dishonest John's schemes are revealed to the heroes, Cecil tends to respond with an aghast "What the heck! D.J., you dirty guy!". When Dishonest John receives his inevitable defeat, it is usually just as painful as the abuse Cecil has endured during the rest of the episode. Dishonest John also has a supervillain alter-ego known as The Bilious Beetle. In this guise, he can fly by his own power and has a painful stinger. "D.J." also appeared disguised on occasion as the mechanical robotic octopus "Billy The Squid" usually in haphazard attempts to simulate seastorms to scare away the crew of the Leakin' Lena when on a treasure hunt. Dishonest John carried a business card that read: "Dirty deeds done dirt cheap. Special rates for Sundays and holidays".

Dishonest John. Although the Beany and Cecil Show was broadcast during my prime cartoon watching days, I don't remember it at all. Probably because our town wasn't in range of an ABC affiliate until the early '70s. By then I wasn't a cartoon fan and the show had ended its run anyway.

You know, I've never seen Beany and Cecil, except in excerpts on the Interwebs. So I have no idea, no idea, who that guy is. Could it be Dastardly McBastard? Don't know.
I heard that Charlie Rose, Matt Lauer, Louie C. K., etc. were planning their comebacks--reemerging in the public eye because they had been quiet long enough, had suffered enough. Heard that Rose was pitching doing a show about #Me Too.
My initial reaction was NO. Not interested. No, they haven't been punished too much. No, I don't want to hear anything from them again.
Just now CBS reported that 21 MORE women have made complaints against Rose.
Let me say again--shut up; stay under your rocks.

We are all only temporarily able bodied.
So far so good on beating cancer for now. I'm doing fine. At the end of the month I'll be 16 months into an 8 month mean lifespan. And yesterday I went on a 7 mile hike and managed to keep up with the hiking group I was with. So, doing something right.
Still waiting for future test results and should see things headed in the right direction. I can say that it's not likely that anything dire happens in the short term so that means that I should have time to make several more attempts at this. So even if it doesn't work the first time there are a lot of variations to try. So if there's bad news it will help me pick the next radiation target.
I have written a "how to" guide for oncologists to perform the treatment that I got. I'm convinced that I'm definitely onto something and whether it works for me or not isn't the definitive test. I know if other people tried this that it would work for some of them, and if they improve it that it will work for a lot of them.
The guide is quite detailed and any doctor reading this can understand the procedure at every level. I also go into detail as to how it works, how I figured it out, and variations and improvements that could be tried to enhance it. I also introduce new ways to look at the problem. There is a lot of room for improvement and I think that doctors reading it will see what I'm talking about and want to build on it. And it's written so that if you're not a doctor you can still follow it. It also has a personal story revealing that I'm the class clown of cancer support group. I give great interviews and I look pretty hot in a lab coat.
So, feel free to read this and see what I'm talking about. But if any of you want to help then pass this around to both doctors and cancer patients. I need some media coverage. I'm looking for as many eyeballs as possible to read these ideas. Even if this isn't the solution, it's definitely on the right track. After all, I did hike 7 miles yesterday. And this hiking group wasn't moving slow. So if this isn't working then, why am I still here?
I also see curing cancer as more of an engineering problem that a medical problem. So if you are good at solving problems and most of what you know about medicine was watching the Dr. House MD TV show, then you're at the level I was at when I started. So anyone can jump in and be part of the solution.

Actor Zoe Saldana was honored with the 2,637th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday.
Saldana, who most recently starred as Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War, received the 2,637th star on the Walk of Fame during a ceremony in Los Angeles. She was joined by her husband, Marco Perego, and their three sons, Bowie, Cy and Zen.
Saldana made her television debut in 1999 on an episode of Law & Order and her first film, Center Stage, was released in 2000.
Saldana has starred in a number of films, including Crossroads, Drumline, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and The Terminalbefore being cast as Uhura in 2009's Star Trek, a role she reprised in 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and 2016's Star Trek Beyond.
Also in 2009, Saldana starred as Neytiri in James Cameron's Avatar.
A former contestant on "The Apprentice" who has accused President-for-now Donald Trump (R-Crooked) of unwanted groping and kissing is seeking footage from the reality TV show as part of her defamation lawsuit against him.
Summer Zervos' lawyer, Mariann Wang, said Wednesday she issued a subpoena for any "Apprentice" material that features Zervos or Trump talking about her or discussing other female contestants in a sexual or inappropriate way.
Wang also subpoenaed records from the Beverly Hills Hotel, where Zervos says Trump made unwelcome advances in 2007.
The question of what Trump might have said or done in "Apprentice" outtakes surfaced during his campaign. The Associated Press asked for original "Apprentice" footage before and after publishing an October 2016 story in which more than 20 former cast and crew members said Trump frequently used lewd, demeaning and sexist language on set and pointed out contestants he wanted to have sex with.
At the time, MGM, which owns "The Apprentice," said it couldn't unilaterally release any unaired, archived material because of contractual obligations. The show's producer, Mark Burnett, also said he didn't have the ability or right to release footage.
CBS News has hired an outside law firm to investigate sexual harassment and misconduct as 27 new accusers made allegations against former anchor Charlie Rose.
The Washington Post reported Thursday that three CBS News managers were made aware of harassment allegations against Rose, which span more than three decades. The Post reported that 27 women, 14 of whom worked at CBS News, accused Rose of sexual harassment. In 1986, a 22-year-old CBS News employee said she told a senior producer, whom she did not name, that Rose had allegedly made lewd comments. The Post reports that CBS News managers were made aware of other alleged instances of sexual harassment again in 2011 and April 2017.
Rose told the Post: "Your story is unfair and inaccurate."
Two top executives - including CBS News President David Rhodes - told the Post they didn't know about accusations against the former CBS This Morning anchor until they were first reported in November 2017.
CBS News and PBS both fired Rose in November 2017 after the Post reported that eight women, all of whom worked or hoped to work on his PBS show, accused him of sexual harassment. At the time, Rose said that he "behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate. I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken."
Many sunscreen makers could soon be forced to change their formulas or be banned from selling the lotions in Hawaii.
State lawmakers passed a measure this week that would ban the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate by 2021 in an effort to protect coral reefs. Scientists have found the two substances can be toxic to coral, which are a vital part of the ocean ecosystem and a popular draw for tourists.
Consumers would only be allowed to buy sunscreen with the chemicals if prescribed by a health care provider, though the measure itself doesn't ban online purchases or tourists from bringing their own to Hawaii.
It would become the first state to enact a ban on the chemicals if Democratic Gov. David Ige signs the bill; he has not indicated whether he will.
Similar legislation failed last year, after it pitted environmental scientists against businesses and trade groups that benefit from the $2 billion market for sun care products in the U.S.
A neo-Nazi website's publisher could be held legally liable for the conduct of readers who carried out an anti-Semitic "troll storm" against a Montana real estate agent's family, a federal magistrate judge said in a court filing Thursday.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah Lynch recommends allowing Tanya Gersh to proceed with her lawsuit's claims against The Daily Stormer publisher Andrew Anglin.
Anglin's lawyers argue he has a constitutional right to express his "political speech" about Gersh and isn't liable for his readers' words or actions. But the magistrate said it isn't clear that Gersh's claims against Anglin are "barred as a matter of law" by the First Amendment.
Gersh claims anonymous internet trolls bombarded her family with hateful and threatening messages after Anglin published their personal information, including her 12-year-old son's Twitter handle and photo.
In a string of posts that started in December 2016, Anglin accused Gersh and other Jewish residents of Whitefish, Montana, of engaging in an "extortion racket" against the mother of white nationalist Richard Spencer. One of Anglin's articles about Gersh urged readers to "take action" against her and other Jewish residents of Whitefish.
Two Victorian shipping mysteries may have been solved thanks to the £50 million search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
While sonar devices have failed to pinpoint the wreckage of the Boeing 777 which disappeared with 239 people on board in March 2014, they have located a pair of shipwrecks on the Indian Ocean seabed.
One is believed to be West Ridge, a 220-foot iron barque, built in Scotland, which was lost while carrying British coal to India in 1883, claiming the lives of 28 crew.
The wreck was found lying upright and evidence uncovered by Australian archaeologists suggest that the vessel weight between 1,100 and 1,655 tons and had at least two decks.
Sifting through the debris, scientists found a coal sample which, on further analysis, suggested that the ship was British.
As Germany prepares to mark Karl Marx's 200th birth anniversary, the revolutionary philosopher's legacy remains divisive more than a quarter century after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
With scars from the Cold War still fresh, people from capitalist former West Germany and the once communist East are of two minds about the 19th-century philosopher.
Some hail Marx as a visionary scholar who foretold the ills of the market economy, while others revile him for inspiring Stalinist regimes.
In the western town of Trier, the icon's birthplace which is planning 600 events for his bicentenary, it is not lost on critics that the centrepiece of the celebrations is a gargantuan statue offered as a gift from communist China.
For many Germans, their feelings are shaped by where and when they grew up.
