Mark Morford: Exploding your emotional bandwidth (SF Gate)
We are not built for this. We are not designed, at our core, to be able to absorb, at a glance and a click, a tweet and a ruthless video feed, all the ills and horrors of the world, all at once, all manner of chaos and destruction in a nonstop bloody flood over which we are powerless to influence and impotent to stop.
Patton Oswalt: The Good Outnumber You And We Always Will
So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, "The good outnumber you, and we always will."
Paul Krugman: Blame The Pundits, Too (New York Times)
This is deciding what you want to believe, finding someone who tells you what you want to hear, and pretending that there are no other voices. It's deeply irresponsible - and you can't blame Reinhart-Rogoff for that mistake.
How old do you feel? (Guardian)
Joan Bakewell wrote this week that turning 80 means 'our time is passing, and we know it'. Meanwhile, Bruce Forsyth, 85, insisted that when he walks on stage he still feels 30. Is age just a number? Here, G2 writers of different vintages reveal their thoughts on ageing.
John Farrier: Dove Hires a Forensic Sketch Artist to Draw Women as They See Themselves (Neatorama)
A woman walks into a room. A forensic sketch artist sits in the room with his back turned to her. He asks her to describe her own appearance. He sketches a face according to that description, then sends her away. Another woman enters. The sketch artist asks her to describe the first woman. He draws a face according to that description. Then he shows the first woman both portraits. Her own description was far, far more critical than the other woman's.

Comedian Louis Black had a chance to perform at Villanova University, provided that he did not mock the Catholic Church. He replied that if Villanova would pay him $10,000, he would believe that the pope was infallible and anything else that Villanova wanted him to believe. Unfortunately, Villanova turned down his proposal.

I had my suspicions, so I had to double check, and it turns out the most watched is the M*A*S*H finale, "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen". I watched that episode, and it was only appropriate that it served as the best finale to any television series.
Hope to hear from you soon, friend.
Sally said:
The TV series, "Mash," was the most watched US TV series finale. I was never a fan to the show because I thought they were making sport of the war. My own youth was more flavored by the Korean 'War,' than by the war in Vietnam. While my own Korean daughter is not by definition a war orphan, I have made it a point to study that country and culture for her. Most of the first children released for adoption after the war were products of Korean women and American soldiers. I do not believe these children were unwanted by their mothers, the children were simply socially unacceptable (half Black or White). OTOH,the same children have brought immeasurable happiness to numerous American (and other countries) families. They were but one aspect of the horror and aftermath of such conflicts. I will give "Mash" credit for bringing out some of this social situation - but there was nothing funny about that war, or any war for that matter. (I have mellowed a bit about it now...)

As a concerned East Texas resident, I have followed closely both the radical, insane rantings of our U.S. Rep. Loopy Louie Gohmert, and the irresponsible actions of the Senate yesterday, and have come to some startling realizations.
U.S. Rep. Loopy Louie Gohmert
We must take seriously the ridiculous claims of the honorable twit, Mr. Gohmert, because now we know that radical jihadist Muslims are being trained in Mexico to pretend to be Hispanics so that they can sneak into our southwestern states and buy up whole arsenals of assault weapons with no restrictions and no invasive, unconstitutional background checks.
I suggest we take Gohmert seriously and, given what we know about the tragedy in Boston, we should further place restrictions on the purchase of BBs, carpentry nails, ball bearings and pressure cookers by Muslims posing as Hispanics (are you listening, Walmart & K-Mart?).

Willie Nelson said Thursday that he will turn an upcoming Texas concert into a benefit for victims of the explosion at a fertilizer plant not far from where he grew up.
The country music icon still has a home in Abbott, Texas, about five miles north of West, which was rocked by the explosion Wednesday night that left an unknown number of people dead and more than 160 hurt. He remembers riding his bike the short distance between the towns and still has many friends and family there.
The concert is scheduled for April 28 in Austin.
When not on the road touring, Nelson has lived in Austin since 1971. The concert was scheduled as an 80th birthday celebration, but now will serve a dual purpose.

Some of the country's top research institutions have combined to launch a massive online archive.
The Digital Public Library of America began beta testing Thursday, promising a site with millions of materials ranging from images of George Washington to footage of Freedom Riders during the civil rights era. Directors of the digital library, first conceived in 2010, include officials from Harvard University and the University of Michigan and a former executive at Google Inc. Government support includes the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The library had planned events at the Boston Public Library on Thursday to mark the opening, but it postponed them until the fall because of the bombings at the Boston Marathon. By the fall, the library also hopes to have launched the site in full.
Efforts by Google to build an online archive have run into legal problems over the Internet search engine's proposed use of copyrighted materials. In an interview Thursday, Cohen said most, but not all of the archives in the digital library are older works in the public domain. He said he would like to have discussions with book publishers about using more recent releases, perhaps including them several years after they first come out, "once the commercial window of sales has finished."

A spokesman for Dick Van Dyke says the actor is undergoing tests for "cranial throbbing" that's causing him to lose sleep.
Spokesman Bob Palmer said Thursday the 87-year-old Van Dyke has been experiencing a throbbing sensation in his head when lying down. Palmer said scans and other tests have yet to yield a diagnosis.
He said Van Dyke has a strong constitution and is otherwise OK but the "fatigue factor has become acute." Palmer said that until Van Dyke receives a diagnosis and treatment plan, he's been advised not to fly and is resting at his Malibu home.
He was to accept an award next week from New York's 92nd Street Y but canceled the trip.
A federal judge has thrown out Viacom Inc's lawsuit accusing Google Inc of posting its programs on YouTube without permission, a year after a federal appeals court had revived the landmark copyright infringement case.
For the second time in three years, U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton in Manhattan rejected Viacom's damages claims over Google's alleged unauthorized posting of clips from "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," "South Park," "SpongeBob SquarePants" and other programs that viewers had uploaded to YouTube.
Stanton agreed that Google and YouTube were protected from Viacom's copyright claims by the "safe harbor" provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
Dozens of content providers have supported Viacom in the battle, including the Associated Press, Gannett Co, the National Football League, Garth Brooks, the Eagles and Sting.
Among the supporters of Google and YouTube were eBay Inc, Facebook Inc, Yahoo Inc, Human Rights Watch and Consumers Union.

The House Democratic campaign arm will air a new ad on Friday against South Carolina Republican House candidate Mark Sanford, attacking him for disappearing from the public eye to visit his then-mistress in Argentina while governor in 2009.
"Mark Sanford walked out on us. Violated our trust. Secretly used thousands of taxpayer dollars flying to Argentina and then lied about it," a male voice says in the ad while the picture shows a man walking along a trail. "Maybe Mark Sanford should just keep walking."
The reference to Sanford "walking" alludes to his telling aides that he was "hiking the Appalachian Trail" when he was actually visiting his mistress.
The tough ad, paid for by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, will begin airing in the Charleston and Savannah markets. It is already online.

Cable channel Showtime on Wednesday pulled the plug on "Dexter," the critically acclaimed show about a police analyst who is also a serial killer.
Starring Michael C. Hall in the title role, the show that pushed boundaries in terms of violence and dark humor will conclude this summer at the end of its eighth season.
"Dexter" earned Hall a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award. The show has more than 13 million fans on Facebook and about 7 million Americans watched last season's finale. The series is also broadcast in parts of Europe and Asia.
Hall, who is also an executive producer, told Entertainment Weekly that his character was ready for a final chapter after Dexter's secret life of killing - which he justified on ethical grounds - was discovered by his police officer sister Debra at the end of the sixth season.

Las Vegas is trying to beat its reputation as a shut-in.
MGM Resorts International announced Thursday that it will sink $100 million into building a park and public promenade outside of its New York-New York and Monte Carlo casinos.
The project runs counter to casinos' long-held strategy of trying to keep people inside, losing track of time as they buy more chips and flit from one pricey attraction to the next.
To that end, MGM is transforming the congested sidewalks in front of its New York City and European-themed casinos into an outdoor plaza featuring trees, benches, food trucks and shops. Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks and last through 2014.

English graphic designer Storm Thorgerson, whose eye-popping album art for Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin encapsulated the spirit of 1970s psychedelia, died Thursday. He was 69.
In a statement, Thorgerson's family said that his death "was peaceful and he was surrounded by family and friends." The statement gave few further details but said that the artist, who suffered a stroke in 2003, had been ill for some time.
Even those who not familiar with Thorgerson's name will have seen his work gracing vinyl collections and CD racks. He was best known for his surreal Pink Floyd covers, which guitarist David Gilmour said had long been "an inseparable part of our work."
Some of Thorgerson's covers - the disturbing image of burning man in a business suit featured on Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" or the stark prism on the band's "Dark Side of the Moon" - have become icons in their own right.
Thorgerson also made covers for Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel, Phish, Styx, and Muse. His art tended toward the unsettling or the bizarre. One particularly weird CD front for The Cranberries' "Bury The Hatchet" featured a monstrous, disembodied eye staring at a crouching, naked figure in a desert. Another Pink Floyd album cover - which Thorgerson said had left the record company "completely berserk" - featured nothing more than a picture of a cow staring out from a field.
Thorgerson described his work as a kind of fantasy job - in both senses of the word.
Thorgerson is survived by his mother Vanji, his son Bill, his wife Barbie Antonis, and her two children Adam and Georgia.
