Barbra Streisand Defends Bill Maher

Barbra Streisand has come to the defense of Bill Maher''s Politically Incorrect, which has been lost in the brouhaha of the Letterman/Nightline debacle at ABC. (Disney and ABC execs have been conspicuously silent on the future of the talk show even as they have gone out of their way to express support for Nightline in recent days.) In a statement published by US magazine and excerpted in Liz Smith's syndicated column today (Thursday), Streisand says that "it would be tragic" if PI folds. "Bill Maher's show is one of the few and imperative crossfires of American opinion ... I hope the decision-makers at ABC will understand that they are providing an important forum for the dialogue that is the foremost foundation of democracy." Smith seconds Streisand's commendation, but expresses doubt that the show will survive. "I think the network is afraid of Maher and wary of appearing unpatriotic by airing a First Amendment fulminator the first order," she writes.

Peter Jennings Is Annoyed

ABC World News Tonight anchor Peter Jennings has complained bitterly about U.S. military efforts to control coverage of the war in Afghanistan. Appearing on Larry King's CNN interview show, Jennings remarked that the Pentagon saw it "as their role to get past us and deal as directly as they can with the American people, so that the American people ... hear only what they have to say." However, Jennings commented, "It is the role and the right and I would add the requirement ... [for] the press to be there to see what's really happening. ... But in this current campaign, the administration simply believed that they could do without the press seeing what they were doing."

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Had a cat problem tonight, and missed most of prime time. Ear mites, broken capillaries & a feral cat were involved. It wasn't pretty.

Don't think anyone will be calling anybody 'poopy-face' on Bill Maher tonight.

Tonight, Friday, it appears to be a fresh night on CBS with 'AFP: American Fighter Pilots' (if it airs, it will be the final episode until summer), 'First Monday' and '48 Hours'.
- Scheduled on a fresh Dave (that is delayed 15 minutes for 'Masters Highlights') are Matthew McConaughey & John Witherspoon.
- Scheduled on a fresh Craiggers are Tim Robbins & Jamie Leigh Curtis.

On NBC, the evening starts fresh with 'Providence', then 'Dateline' and a rerun 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'.
- Scheduled on a fresh Jay is Kirsten Dunst.
- Scheduled on a fresh Conan are Samuel L. Jackson and Alanis Morissette.

ABC starts the evening with a so-called, but fresh, 'Funniest Home Videos' and follows it with 'An American Celebration At Ford's Theatre', where the show isn't 'Our American Cousin', but an annual 'gala'. This is the show where the pResident 'waved' to Stevie Wonder. The show has been whittled down to an hour, and is followed by '20/20' hosted by Barbara Walters & that guy who reminds me of the sea lions in Florence, OR.
- Scheduled on a fresh Bill Maher is not known currently, and it will be starting late...like after 1am.

The WB is all fresh with 'Sabrina', 'Raising Dad', 'Reba' and 'Maybe It's Me'.

Faux has reruns on 'That 70's Show' and 'Grounded For Life'. Then, it's a fresh 'Dark Angel'.

UPN, locally, is pre-empted for more of Ruperts Doggers visiting the San Diego Padres.

A&E runs 'Shackleton', parts 1 & 2, back-to-back.

AMC has 'The Creature From The Black Lagoon', and later, for that Roger Corman fix, 'The Pit & The Pendulum', with Vincent Price. The first half is a bit weak, but, it ends in a damn fine manner!

TCM seems to also be celebrating cheesy Horror 'Classics'. '20 Million Miles To Earth', 'It! The Terror From Beyond Space', 'War Of The Planets' and 'Solaris'. A bit later, they start Saturday off with the Marx Brothers in 'Animal Crackers'. Damn fine film for breakfast!

Anyone have any opinions?

Or reviews?

been a progressive since my age of reason- I'm 50. make my living playing around madison wi. and I have to get three things off my chest

1 the osbournes is the single worst waste of time that has ever scourged man pathetic beyond description

2 garbage's techno-pop is interesting and fun, but try mixing in a foo fighters album and read the liner lyric

3 al gore is a dead, straight-up, proto-type loser of the highest degree

OK, sure. We disagree, but that's fine.
1. 'The Osbournes' are not the single worst waste of time or tape. Other contenders would be 'OK Crackerby', 'Alan Thicke', 'Hee Haw Honeys', or any episode of 'Crossing Over'
2. Garbage is interesting & fun. Probably will end up on a fast food commercial sooner rather than later.
3. Al Gore is a decent, honorable man. He didn't allow his daddy to get him in the National Guard, and he also completed his stint.
None of his children have a rap sheet.
Al Gore has no DUI arrests or convictions.
Al Gore's kids speak to him.
Al Gore has never 'choked' on a pretzel.
Al Gore won the popular vote.
Al Gore never knocked up a 15 year old & then insisted on an abortion.
If he's a 'proto-loser of the first degree,' who's sitting in our White House?

yeah, and one more thing- john stewart is areally cool person to be quoting in your main text [see- BARTCOP] 10 days ago stewart had one bill o'riley on his little nazi love fest. the pop idol and the old grey fox spinmeister committed a loving 69 for 12 excruciating minutes mtv boy had met his role model and it tasted GOOD

MAYBE IF YOU WEREN'T WATCHING OZZY AND THIS ABOMINABLE FARCE YOU WOULD BE HIP TO STEWART

I'm really confused now. First, you respond when I haven't.

Now, you're calling Jon Stewart a nazi in comparison to ''one bill o'riley'' - do you mean O'Reilly? O'Really? Considering O'Really a journalist is like considering Jeff Dahmer a surgeon.

It would be so much easier to translate your thoughts if they were completely formed.

But, I will gladly defer to your obviously greater knowledge regarding the full-spectrum of ejacular flavors.

Testifying Before Senate Panel

Sir Elton John

Elton John & Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. Photo by Dennis Cook

Pop star and AIDS activist Sir Elton John told a U.S. Senate panel on Thursday that the world's richest nation must do more to stop the world's worst epidemic.

The British singer-songwriter, whose AIDS foundation has funded $35 million of grass-roots treatment and prevention programs in 55 countries in the last decade, had never addressed a political body before and he said in an interview before the hearing that he was quite nervous.

But he testified eloquently about the global scourge, which has already claimed some 25 million lives.

"This is the government of the richest nation in history and I'm here asking you for more money to stop the worst epidemic in history," he told the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee.

Gaye, who is the daughter of Marvin Gaye and released her own album in 1992, recently made her feature debut in "Ali" as Belinda Ali, the second wife of the boxing great.

Appearing On 'The West Wing'

Ford, Carter & Clinton

An unusual "West Wing" episode scheduled to air later this month includes interviews with three former Presidents and officials from every recent administration - except the Bush White House.

But yesterday it was impossible to tell yet who snubbed whom.

NBC announced the special "West Wing" episode, airing April 24, that will mix episodic action from the series' three-year history and intercutting them with real-life interviews with Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton about how the White House really operates.

Also included will be reminiscences from former West Wing staffers Henry Kissinger, Dee Dee Myers and Leon Panetta - who worked at the Clinton White House - and David Gergen.

Conspicuous in their absence was anyone from the current Administration.

Bad blood between the White House and the series appear to have begun last February, when Sorkin slammed Bush in a New Yorker magazine article - saying the media was "waving pompoms" over the Bush Administration's war on terrorism.

Sorkin isn't the only one associated with "West Wing" who has been openly critical of President Bush. Martin Sheen, astaunch liberal personally and who stars as President Josiah Bartlet in the series, is a loud and persistent critic of the President.

Big Dog As Senior Advisor

Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton will serve as a senior adviser to a pair of investment funds headed by a former grocery store magnate who is a friend of the former president.

Some of Clinton's new duties as counsel to the Yucaipa American Fund and the Yucaipa Corporate Initiatives Fund will include meeting with political leaders and company heads in communities where the funds hope to invest. The funds specialize in lower-income urban and rural communities.

"We are proud that President Clinton will serve as a senior advisor to our firm," said Ron Burkle, managing partner of The Yucaipa Companies. "Much of what we have accomplished and continue to pursue in our investment strategy matches the platform the President outlined while in office with his New Markets Initiative."

Clinton's staff confirmed the appointment in a statement released Wednesday.

Burkle would not disclose how much Clinton would be compensated for his services but said his pay would be based on the performance of the funds.

Goofy & Proud Of It

Cameron Diaz

Actress Cameron Diaz said she isn't goofy just when the cameras are on — she's goofy in real life, too.

"I have pretty much behaved this way my entire life, which was probably more adoring (sic) when I was a a child than as an adult, when I'm sure it's less attractive," Diaz said, laughing.

Her new movie, "The Sweetest Thing," co-stars Selma Blair and Christina Applegate and is a "raunchy, fun, screwball comedy," Diaz said.

In the movie, Diaz said she had a great film filming the montage of scenes where she did impressions of Madonna in "Desperately Seeking Susan," Olivia Newton-John in "Grease" and other actresses.

Sunday, Bloody Sunday

May 19th

NBC has confirmed its two-hour reunion special "The Cosby Show: A Look Back" will air from 9 to 11 p.m. on May 19 -- the final Sunday of the May ratings "sweeps" and the 2001-02 season. It joins an already crowded battlefield for what's shaping up to be one of the most competitive nights of network television in recent years.

In addition to "Cosby," the Sunday showdown features the two-hour series finale of Fox's "The X-Files," the two-hour season-ender of ABC's "The Practice" and the three-hour wrap to the CBS reality smash "Survivor: Marquesas."

CBS long ago staked its claim to Sunday by announcing the "Survivor" finale would air on May 19. "The X-Files" and "The Practice" both air on Sundays, so it's natural their finales would air as they are.

To boost chances for "X-Files," Fox will run the season finales of "The Simpsons" and "Malcolm in the Middle" from 7 to 8 p.m. as a lead-in to the Chris Carter sci-fi smash.

Changing Agents

Robin Williams

Michael Ovitz took another hit yesterday when Robin Williams bailed out of the dealmaker's Artists Management Group.

Ovitz set off a war in 1999 when he lured away Williams and his agent, Mike Menchel, from the Creative Artists Agency, which Ovitz used to run.

Williams' spokesman said that, although the funnyman "has had a long and productive relationship with Michael Ovitz and Mike Menchel, he is ready to reunite with the resources of a full-service agency."

Hosting New Game Show 'Russian Roulette'

Mark L. Walberg

Mark L. Walberg, host of Fox television's libido-charged "reality" series "Temptation Island," will be taking a spin on cable TV with the Game Show Network's "Russian Roulette."

Walberg will emcee the new game show -- perfectly harmless, despite its deadly title -- which GSN has slated to debut June 3 at 11 p.m. The series will air regularly Monday through Sunday at that hour.

The show tests contestants' knowledge, then offers an abrupt exit -- through the floor -- to those who do not make the grade.

Day of Silence

At nearly 1,800 high schools and colleges nationwide, students chose not to speak in order to protest anti-gay bias in schools.

Wednesday's Day of Silence was meant to draw attention to the isolation that can drive gay students to higher rates of suicide and substance abuse.

"Today, a lot of people understood. They had more respect for the people being quiet," said Maria Hoose, 17, an Albany, N.Y., high school student who describes herself as bisexual.

The protest, in its seventh year, grew from 200 schools last year to 1,776 schools in 49 states this year under a new national organizer, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.

The majority of students who participated were straight.

University of Virginia students organized the first Day of Silence in 1996. About 100 colleges nationwide participated in 1997, with high schools joining in 1998.

Turned Down $1 Billion Payday

Abba

Even though it would have meant $1 billion, an Abba reunion was not worth the pressure or the disappointed fans, according to former member Bjorn Ulvaeus.

Before it broke up in 1981, the Swedish supergroup was known for hits like "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me" and "Waterloo."

Ulvaeus said the band was offered $1 billion to play 100 concerts. But he said it would have meant months of rehearsals for the four band members, and he was afraid fans would walk away from the concerts upset.

"Every pop era needs to have a hate object. Because for some reason we were very uncool, not very image conscious, I think we became the ones," he said.

Halle Berry suffered an inflamed eye in an accident on the set of the latest James Bond film, the producers said Wednesday.

The producers denied news reports that the 33-year-old actress had been hurt by debris from a smoke grenade.

"Die Another Day" is scheduled for release in Britain and the United States on Nov. 22.

''Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi'' in Japanese

'Spirited Away'

Entertainment giant The Walt Disney Co. on Thursday said it had acquired the U.S. rights to "Spirited Away," a movie by famed Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki that was Japan's highest-grossing film ever.

Disney said its rights under the deal cover the U.S. theatrical, home entertainment and television releases. It said it also acquired video distribution rights in Japan, as well as theatrical, home entertainment and television rights in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and France.

The movie, called "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi" in Japanese, has grossed 29.3 billion yen ($222 million) in Japan and won the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival.

The U.S. theatrical release of "Spirited Away," which will be dubbed in English, is set for this fall, said Dick Cook, in one of his first major announcements since being named chairman of Disney Studios two months ago.

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed

Notorious B.I.G.

The family of the Notorious B.I.G. has sued the city of Los Angeles, alleging that the Police Department could have done more to prevent the rapper's 1997 murder.

The civil rights and wrongful death lawsuit names the city, Police Chief Bernard Parks, former Police Chief Willie Williams and others.

The Notorious B.I.G., whose real name was Christopher Wallace, was shot to death outside the Petersen Automotive Museum on March 9, 1997, after a music industry party. No one has been arrested for the 24-year-old rapper's slaying.

Wallace was shot about six months after Tupac Shakur, one of Death Row's biggest stars, was killed in an unsolved Las Vegas drive-by shooting.

At the time, there was speculation that the killing resulted from a rivalry between East and West coast rappers.
