Annalee Newitz: Pregnant Men
Thomas Beatie is not the first transgendered man to get pregnant. So why is he getting so much attention, and why now?
Jim Hightower: UNFRIENDLY SKIES (jimhightower.com)
Travel in some primitive parts of the world is a nightmare - passengers are treated like livestock, service is surly, rules are ridiculous, delays are common, and the whole experience is dreadful. Luckily, here in sophisticated America, we have modern airlines - on which passengers are treated like livestock, service is surly, rules are ridiculous, delays are common, and the whole experience is dreadful.
JESSE KORNBLUTH: Randy Pausch's Last Lecture Blew You away -- Now He Has a Book
Somewhere in between -- in the quiet space where a book really lives -- is a document that accomplishes a lot in 200 pages. It's about paying attention to what you think is important (when asked how he got tenure early, Pausch replied, "Call me at my office at 10 o'clock on Friday night and I'll tell you") and working hard and listening really well. It's easy to miss that last part of that in the emotion and the stories surrounding this book, but Pausch argues that hearing what other people say about you and your work is crucial to success and happiness. Because this is what you get: "a feedback loop for life."
Len Righi: 'Juno' soundtrack star Kimya Dawson is now an alpha female (The Morning Call)
Since nine of her songs were featured in the hit 2007 movie "Juno" (which racked up four Academy Award nominations, winning for best screenplay) and made up the bulk of the film's hit soundtrack album (it reached No. 1 on the Billboard chart in January), Kimya Dawson has requested only one thing: That interviewers refrain from asking her the same questions over and over again.
DAVID WILD: New Kids Say the Darndest, Most Afrocentric Things (huffingtonpost.com)
The New Kids may not have been the most meaningful popular phenomenon I've ever been around, but it was definitely the loudest. I'll never forget not being able to turn on the light in my hotel room without hundreds of girls sleeping outside screaming because I was staying on the same floor with the young objects of their desire. Truth be told, I'll also never forget those multiple hot moms who offered even me sexual favors in exchange for my All Access Pass. For the record -- and for my wife who might be reading this -- I adamantly refused these propositions for reasons that are not entirely clear to me today.
In 1972 Burt Reynolds posed naked in what magazine?
A: Glamour
B: Cosmopolitan
C: Modern Man
D: Playboy
E: Playgirl
Source
Burt Reynolds gained notoriety when he posed naked in the April 1972 (Vol. 172, No. 4) issue of
Cosmopolitan Magazine.
Two preview issues of Playgirl were published with race car driver Mike Hiss in the January 1973 issue; and the Hager Twins, Jim and John, from TV's Hee Haw in the February 1973 issue.
Then Vol. 1, No. 1 appeared in June of 1973. with Lyle Waggoner featured.
Thanks to Charlie & Marianne for the picture.
mj was first, and correct (except that Playgirl's first centerfold wasn't Peter Lupus - he came later [no pun intended], and was their first full frontal), observing:
He was one of the men who convinced me
That naked guys don't know what to do with themselves in front of a camera. He was in Cosmo.
Playgirl's first centerfold was, if I remember, Peter Lupus from Mission Impossible.
DanD observed:
For some reason I was thinking that he posed in Playgirl ... after all,
he became the most "looked" at male ass by (ostensibly) straight guys in
1972. But between the manner of the pose and his own surrogate
"body-wear" of natural, hirsute cover, it really wasn't all that riskay'
of a picture. It kinda' reminded me of Bigfoot.
As it was Cosmopolitan (B) did the hairy deed.
ducks replied:
Although it will take a while to get the image of Burt au naturale out of my head this morning, I think it was Cosmo…or Playgirl…no, Cosmo. I actually remember seeing it (and he wasn't totally nude so the mystery remains and that's just fine with me thank you very much) but much of the 70s is still a blur so I will not claim certainty on this one.
bebo answered:
I'm on a hot streak. B: cosmopolitan.
Tony In Philly responded:
B: Cosmopolitan
Ha! Man am I old! I remember a girl in my neighborhood letting me see it.
That was his prime!
MAM anwsered:
It was B: Cosmopolitan, in the same year he starred in 'Deliverance' !
Sharon said:
Burt Reynolds posed nude in Cosmopolitan, the magazine for Modern Young Sluts!
I remember it well. 1972 was the year I entered college. However, Burt preserved his modesty with a piece of fur, so we really didn't see anything THAT interesting....LOL!
Walt wrote:
I didn't buy the magazine. It must have made a some commotion when
published to register in my brain all these years later. If it's correctly
stored in my head the magazine was Playgirl.
Joe S ("You can only hold your stomach in for so many years."
~ Burt Reynolds) replied:
I'll never forget it. I was working in the office of a very large construction company in 1972. There were a couple of old ladies working there, they must have been at least 45 years old (I was 28). One of them walked by the desk of the other carrying a Cosmopolitan magazine and in a very loud whisper said, "Come with me." Both women went into the copy room, then we heard, very loudly, "OH MY GOD! Oh, it's his arm." So Cosmo is the answer.
Marian the Teacher nailed it with:
Cosmopolitan Magazine. He was a hottie at the time.
And, joe b responded:
That's E, Remember Mad's spin on the Longest Yard the cons had Playgirl's
foldout with Burt while looking fondly at Burt.

Dolly Parton visited the woods overlooking Douglas Lake near the Great Smoky Mountains in designer buckskins and 4-inch heels. But she knew she wasn't the star of this show. It was a young American bald eagle.
The eagle was blown from its nest several weeks ago in Florida. On Thursday, it was returned to the wild by the American Eagle Foundation, which is based at the 62-year-old singer's Dollywood theme park.
Some 90 eagles have been released from the same spot since the 1990s. But this marked the first time that their country music benefactor had seen it in person.
Kenya's Nobel Peace laureate Wangari Maathai has pulled out of the Olympic torch relay in which she was due to take part over the weekend in Tanzania, citing concerns for worldwide human rights.
Maathai said she withdrew to show solidarity with activists over rights issues, including in Tibet where China's crackdown on recent protests have sparked international anger.
Maathai, who won the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize for her tree-planting and pro-democracy campaigns, said China was well placed to press for the respect of human rights in Darfur, Tibet and Myanmar, a China ally.
She said China had failed to exert pressure on the military junta in Myanmar -- formerly known as Burma -- to respect human rights, including freeing democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.

The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression gave their annual "muzzle" awards to violators including police who charged a woman for swearing at her overflowing toilet, and a motor vehicles department that deemed a "GETOSAMA" license plate offensive.
The center, linked to the University of Virginia, reserved special scorn for the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a press conference at which agency staffers posing as reporters pitched soft questions to officials in an effort to show FEMA had done well in tackling California wildfires.
And it gave a "Lifetime Muzzle" to the Federal Communications Commission for years of applying what it said were inconsistent or arbitrary standards of indecency on the airwaves.
The center noted that the FCC had ruled in 2001 that "fleeting expletives" would not be deemed indecent but then three years later judged that both the 'f-word' and the 's-word' met its definitions of indecency.
Recently sworn-in U.S. citizen Craig Ferguson is being embraced by his new countrymen: The late-night comic hit a ratings milestone last week with his first victory over NBC's Conan O'Brien.
The CBS "Late Late Show" averaged more viewers than O'Brien's "Late Night" (1.88 million to 1.77 million) for the first week during which they each competed with all-original shows since Ferguson started in January 2005.
It caps a slow and steady climb for Ferguson and raises a red flag for future "Tonight" show host O'Brien, although NBC says it is still happy with O'Brien's audience.

The secret talents of celebrities will remain hidden. CBS is axing its new reality show "Secret Talents of the Stars" after only one episode.
The first airing Wednesday had former "Star Trek" actor George Takei singing "On the Road Again." Only 4.6 million people tuned in - and thousands tuned away as the hour continued.
CBS officials say news programming is expected as a temporary replacement
A total of 28 charges were dropped at the prosecution's request Thursday in the Hollywood wiretaps case against private investigator Anthony Pellicano and a co-defendant.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Saunders said the government made the request because some of the alleged victims weren't available to testify and other counts were redundant.
More than 35 charges remain against Pellicano and former Los Angeles police Sgt. Mark Arneson. They and three other codefendants have pleaded not guilty.
The dropped counts mostly involved wire fraud that authorities had alleged involved Arneson searching law enforcement databases for Pellicano.

A New York state judge threw out parts of Dan Rather's $70 million lawsuit against CBS on Thursday, but preserved several key elements, including the former news anchor's breach of contract claim.
State Supreme Court Judge Ira Gammerman dismissed Rather's fraud claim, saying he was too late in filing it, and rejected Rather's charge that CBS executives damaged his future job prospects, saying Rather could not support the claim.
The judge let stand the portion of the suit in which Rather says the network breached his contract by not giving him enough on-air assignments after he was removed as anchor of the "CBS Evening News" in March 2005, following a scandal over a report on U.S. resident George W. Bush's military record.
A union representing many Hollywood blue-collar workers has agreed to recess contract talks with the studios to make way for the industry's upcoming negotiations with actors.
The Intl. Assn. of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) said Wednesday they would continue their "opening round" of talks at an unspecified later date. They began three days of talks on Monday.
The AMPTP is due to open talks with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) on Monday, and then with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) on April 28. Amid fears that the negotiations won't be completed by the June 30 expiration of the actors' contracts, the studios are avoiding shooting projects that could be affected by a summer walkout.
IATSE, whose contract expires in 2009, represents such professions as stagehands, post-production technicians, wardrobe assistants and makeup artists.
The CW is launching a provocative new campaign for "Gossip Girl" using an image of two characters having sex.
One version is branded with the letters "OMFG," which is online slang for "Oh my f---ing god." A tamer version uses "OMG." The image is taken from the show's pilot. Another ad in the series shows two characters making out in the back of limo branded with the ":O" emotion.
The ads are designed to promote the return of "Gossip" to original episodes on April 21 after its writers strike-induced hiatus.
A 12 century key to the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest site in Islam, is seen in this undated handout photograph released in London April 10, 2008. A 12 century key to the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest site in Islam, sold for 9.2 million pounds late on Wednesday, setting a new record for an Islamic work of art at auction. The Abbasid period key, made of iron and measuring 37 cm long, sold at Sotheby's in London for more than 18 times its pre-sale estimate and was bought anonymously. It is the only known example to remain in private hands.
An early Picasso painting, depicting the artist in a naked embrace with his girlfriend, fetched 81,260 pounds ($160,000) at auction on Thursday, including buyer's premium.
The watercolour was found propped up against a wall in a house in southwest England along with two paintings of horses by British painters George Stubbs and Alfred Munnings.
The Picasso dates from the early 1900s when the Spanish artist was in Paris, and is believed to show him in a lover's clinch with lover Louise Lenoir, known as Odette.
A rare and primitive frog living in a remote Borneo stream has no lungs and apparently absorbs oxygen through its skin, researchers reported on Wednesday.
The aquatic frog has evolved backwards, re-acquiring a primordial trait, David Bickford of the National University of Singapore and colleagues reported.
"The evolution of lunglessness in tetrapods (amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals) is exceedingly rare, previously known only from amphibians -- two families of salamanders and a single species of caecilian (blindworm)," they wrote.
The ruins of the World Trade Center and naked senior citizens wearing Mickey Mouse masks will share a stage Saturday, when a German theatre's sell-out reinterpretation of a Verdi opera opens.
The Erfurt Theatre's production of "A Masked Ball" will feature 35 naked seniors wearing masks of the Disney character throughout the performance.
The 1859 opera is no stranger to controversy. Giuseppe Verdi wrote it about the 1792 assassination of Swedish king Gustavus III, who was shot while attending a masked ball.
Nineteenth century censors demanded that Verdi move the opera's setting from Europe to colonial America so as not to depict the assassination of a European monarch.
This photo released by Centro de Estudios Cientificos, shows the Cachet lake partially dried, in Aysen, southern Chile, Monday, April 7, 2008. The lake was dried up during three days (April 6-8) after the melting of neighboring Colonia glacier filled the lake and increased pressure on the ice sheet. The water bored a 5-mile tunnel through the glacier and finally emptied into the Baker River on April 6, according to glacier scientist Gino Cassasa. The lake was nearly full again by late Wednesday, Cassasa said.
