Rachel Allen: That Girl Was Ahead of Its Time. This Episode Shows Just How Far Ahead. (Slate)
But this is the signature battle move of That Girl-the series doesn't directly call out sexism so much as show Ann wielding the power in the end. Even as Barrini emphasizes what an opportunity he could give her, Ann's respect for her less glamorous work in minor productions, including as a mop on a children's program, shines through. And her choice in the end rejects the notion, still present, that a woman must do things she is uncomfortable with to further her career. You'll have to watch to find out whether Ann gets the part, but know that her inevitable showdown with Barrini is classic That Girl, giving Ann the last word.

Amandas Ong: A Different Kind of Anarchy in the U.K. (Slate)
Having lost faith in the government's response to the coronavirus, ordinary Britons are taking matters into their own hands.

Garrison Keillor: What I might be doing when this is over
[My uncle Lonnie] became the World's Most Silent Man when he was 30 and still living on his father's farm and one day he took ten dozen eggs to town to sell and the buggy hit a bump and the eggs broke so Lonnie stopped and made a fire and fried the eggs on a shovel and a hobo came along and shared the eggs with him, a hobo who worked in a carnival every summer as a geek in a freak show, and he offered to get Lonnie a job and Lonnie, who hated farming and had been ready to leave home for years, joined the show. He loved the show people and that became his life.

Phil Hoad: Is this the future of film? How to finish a shoot when the coronavirus strikes (The Guardian)
When the pandemic halted his war thriller, Timur Bekmambetov popped his leading actor inside a video game and completed the shoot from 1,200km away. Will other movies now be made this way?

Nate Jones: The 50 Best Movies to Watch With Your Parents During Quarantine (Vulture)
So now the three of us are holed up in one house with no end date in sight, and anecdotally, it seems that plenty of other millennials are in the same boat. How will we fill the time? Perhaps with this carefully curated selection of family-friendly films currently available on streaming, as determined by me, with special assistance from my loving parents and their helpful neighbors.

Jordan Crucchiola and Bilge Ebiri: The 68 Best Pandemic Movies to Binge in Quarantine (Vulture)
It might seem crazy, but as Vulture's Kathryn VanArendonk writes, "this current pandemic crisis makes me terrified, and a story about exactly that same thing is one way to grapple with that fear." In that spirit, Vulture has assembled a list of contagion movies you can watch to either ease your worries or willfully exacerbate them, broken down by category for ease of use: …

BEN MATHIS-LILLEY: Pretending to Be Grateful for Donald Trump Is America's No. 1 Public Health Priority (Slate)
The critical factor in any Trump decision is how a given subject makes him feel. Initially, when the possibility of a coronavirus pandemic was largely being raised by Democrats and members of the media, it made him feel defensive, so he denied that it existed. Slowly, the people around him have been able to turn the ship, and now talking about the coronavirus makes him feel like an important president doing serious things on TV. This is what currently passes as a reason for optimism.

Anastasia Tsioulcas: Tomie dePaola, Beloved Children's Author And Illustrator, Has Died (NPR)
In 1998, dePaola told All Things Considered that he hoped to recognize children for all their capabilities. "As a grownup," he said, "I want to give children the credit for everything I can: their courage, their humor, their love, their creative abilities, their abilities to be fair, their abilities to be unfair. But I do wish that we grownups would give children lots of credit for these ephemeral kind of qualities that they have."

Throwback Thursday Trivia Question from Yesterday

Inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2000, this plaything is governed by Hooke's law and the effects of gravitational potential. By what name is this toy more commonly known?

       Slinky                                                      Source

A Slinky is a precompressed helical spring toy invented by Richard James in the early 1940s. It can perform a number of tricks, including travelling down a flight of steps end-over-end as it stretches and re-forms itself with the aid of gravity and its own momentum, or appear to levitate for a period of time after it has been dropped. These interesting characteristics have contributed to its success as a toy in its home country of the United States, resulting in many popular toys with slinky components in a wide range of countries.

The Slinky was invented and developed by BTS Richard T. James in 1943 and demonstrated at Gimbels department store in Philadelphia in November 1945. The toy was a hit, selling its entire inventory of 400 units in ninety minutes. James and his wife Betty formed James Industries in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania to manufacture Slinky and several related toys such as the Slinky Dog and Suzie, the Slinky Worm. In 1960, James's wife Betty became president of James Industries, and, in 1964, moved the operation back to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. In 1998, Betty James sold the company to Poof Products, Inc.

Slinky was originally priced at $1, but many paid much more due to price increases of spring steel throughout the state of Pennsylvania; it has, however, remained modestly priced throughout its history as a result of Betty James' concern about the toy's affordability for poor customers. Slinky has been used other than as a toy in the playroom: it has appeared in the classroom as a teaching tool, in wartime as a radio antenna, and in physics experiments with NASA. Slinky was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame at The Strong in Rochester, New York, in 2000. In 2003, Slinky was named on the Toy Industry Association's "Century of Toys List". In its first 60 years Slinky sold 300 million units.

The rules that govern the mechanics of a slinky are Hooke's law and the effects of gravitation.        Source

I just read a blurb about Hooke's law - never heard of it before - and I think the toy to which you refer is a Slinky. My sibs and I were so easily entertained sending a Slinky down the stairs. As we lived in a two-story house with an attic and a basement, we had lots of steps to send down a Slinky.

Anecdotes

Language

• The music of Latino Ricky Martin is popular across the world. While on a Far East tour, he was amazed to perform in a Chinese town and hear his Chinese fans singing, "Un, dos, tres, un pasisto pa'lante, Maria." Mr. Martin says, "I've gotten the Chinese to speak Spanish. Who else can say that?"

Mishaps

• Arturo Toscanini had a phenomenal memory as well as a phenomenal ear. Once, he decided to conduct Ernest Schelling's "Impressions from an Artist's Life," and he invited Mr. Schelling himself to play solo piano. During rehearsal, Maestro Toscanini - who never looked at a score during rehearsal, although he kept one on the stage - stopped Mr. Schelling and stated that he believed the pianist had omitted a G flat. Mr. Schelling replied, "You are right. I did omit the G flat because I never wrote a G flat at that particular point in my original score." That surprised Maestro Toscanini, so he invited Mr. Schelling to look at the score with him. After looking at the score, it was Mr. Schelling who was surprised, and he said, "Mr. Toscanini, I did omit the G flat. In all the times I have played this piece I always omitted the G flat. Since the day I wrote it, I had completely forgotten it was there."

• Pianist Artur Rubinstein once objected to a movie script in which a conductor drowned out the music of a pianist during a concert. He asserted that no conductor would ever do this. Shortly afterward, he went to an appointment to make a recording with conductor Leopold Stokowski. The two men interpreted the music differently, with Mr. Rubinstein playing one way while Mr. Stokowski conducted another way - with the result that the conductor drowned out the music of the pianist. Mr. Rubinstein then told the director of the movie with the script he had objected to, "Don't bother about changing that script. I was wrong."

• Lucien Muratore once sang the role of Faust with a Mephisto who was very stout. In the opera, Mephisto made a grand entrance by rising up from a trapdoor. Unfortunately, because of Mephisto's great bulk, the fit through the trapdoor was very tight and the lower part of his clothing was torn. Unaware of just what and how much he was revealing, the actor playing Mephisto sang his entrance lines: "Why do you start as you greet me? Does it frighten you to see me?" The audience was not frightened - it laughed until the curtain was drawn to enable Mephisto to cover his predicament.

• Professional opera singers must be ready to deal with the unexpected on stage. On May 19, 1961, Plácido Domingo made his debut as lead singer in the role of Alfredo in Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata. In the second act, a letter from Violetta was supposed to arrive for Alfredo by messenger. Looking at the door where the messenger was supposed to appear, Mr. Domingo sang, "Who's there?" No messenger appeared! Thinking quickly, Mr. Domingo sang, "No one," then he picked up a paper lying on a desk and sang, "From Violetta!" He then continued with the scene as it had been written.

The programming will be available to stream by downloading the HBO Now or HBO GO apps or by visiting HBONow.com or HBOGo.com. The content will also be made available for free via participating distribution partners' platforms in the coming days.

This is the first time HBO has made this volume of streaming programming available outside of the paywall. As people hunker down and self-isolate during the viral crisis, content providers are moving to draw viewers in. Showtime recently announced it was offering a free 30-day trial to new customers.

Musicals Free Online

Andrew Lloyd Webber

In the midst of theater shutdowns, social distancing and home isolation because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, a series of familiar musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber are set to appear online each week for free viewing.

The filmed versions of Lloyd Webber's musicals will be housed on the YouTube channel The Shows Must Go On. Currently, the channel is promoting the first show in the series, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, premiering April 3 at 11 a.m.

The full-length musical, inspired by the West End production and starring Donny Osmond, Maria Friedman, Richard Attenborough and Joan Collins, will be available to view for a 48-hour period. It includes the hit numbers "Go, Go, Go, Joseph," "Any Dream Will Do" and "Close Every Door."

The second production in the series will be the rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar, appearing on YouTube April 10. The show stars Tim Minchin, Melanie C and Chris Moyles. Just days ago, NBC announced that it will re-air the popular musical Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert on Easter Sunday.

Amazon Prime Video To Stream

SXSW

Amazon Prime Video and SXSW have teamed to launch Prime Video Presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection. Eyed to go live later this month, the initiative was hatched as a way to give exposure to films slated to premiere at the Austin-based festival before their red carpet hopes were dashed when the festival got canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Filmmakers are being invited to opt-in and have their work premier exclusively for 10 days in the U.S. on Prime Video. A fee of an undisclosed amount will be paid to the makers of each film. It's up to the filmmakers whether or not they want to show their work this way. Those who need to monetize their projects with theatrical or other VOD deals will likely demur.

But Amazon is offering its widest opportunity for eyeballs: the program will be made available free to audiences, with or without an Amazon Prime membership, all that is needed is a free Amazon account. Filmmakers will receive a fee for their participation.

Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke, said she leaned into this "Not as a business opportunity, but an effort to be supportive of filmmakers and talent in this trying time," she told Deadline. "We saw this festival being canceled and I've been there many times and we had a huge financial and emotional investment, and we wanted to find a way for the community to be able to come together and celebrate that work. This was about wanting to create a doorway for filmmakers to platform their work."

Modern Water Bottle

'Little Women'

As the world self-isolates, many are filling the endless hours with rewatches of their favorite movies and TV shows. It's unsurprising, then, that Little Women fans recently noticed a pretty significant blooper in the 2019 film.

Twitter user @DUNENATION pointed out that a scene involving Timothée Chalamet features a black hydro flask in the frame. Other users confirmed this with their own screenshots in the replies to the initial tweet.

One account suggested that TikTok user Madelyn Rancourt may have noticed the gaffe earlier. She shared a deep dive into the movie's mistake; in the scene where the March sisters retrieve Amy (Florence Pugh) from Laurie's (Chalamet) home after her hand is injured, not one but two water bottles can be spotted. In Rancourt's video, she points out that though she's seen the film several times, she just recently noticed the black hydro flask and a plastic Poland Springs water bottle behind Chalamet.

The water bottle incident is reminiscent of the infamous Game of Thrones debacle, in which a Starbucks coffee cup could be seen sitting in front of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) on a table in episode 4 of season 8. HBO later scrubbed the cup from the shot on HBO Go without further comment. Little Women director Greta Gerwig has yet to weigh in on the matter.

Pakistan Court

Daniel Pearl

A Pakistani court on Thursday commuted the death sentence of the main person accused in the 2002 kidnapping and murder of an American Wall Street Journal reporter, Daniel Pearl, and acquitted three other co-accused in the matter.

All four had been convicted in connection with Pearl's kidnapping and murder, including British-born Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, who was sentenced to death in 2002 for masterminding the murder. He has been in jail for 18 years awaiting the outcome of an appeal.

Pearl, 38, was investigating Islamist militants in Karachi after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States when he was kidnapped in January 2002. His case grabbed headlines globally, after a video of his beheading emerged weeks after Pearl was abducted.

The court also acquitted all four of charges of kidnapping the American for ransom too, and found Sheikh guilty only on the charge of abduction.

U.S. Paying For Coronavirus Equipment

Russia

The United States is paying Russia for a planeload of medical equipment sent by Moscow to help fight the coronavirus outbreak, a senior Trump administration official said on Thursday, clearing up confusion as to who footed the bill.

It had been unclear whether Russia had sent the 60 tons of equipment as a gift or whether it had sold the shipment of ventilators, masks, respirators and other items following a phone discussion between U.S. President Donald Trump (R-Bought) and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump, asked about the shipment at a White House news briefing, said he was happy to take delivery of it.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Moscow had paid half the cost with the other half picked up by Washington.

But the senior administration official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the United States paid.

Bans Eating Cats and Dogs

Shenzhen

Shenzhen has become the first Chinese city to ban the sale and consumption of dog and cat meat.

It comes after the coronavirus outbreak was linked to wildlife meat, prompting Chinese authorities to ban the trade and consumption of wild animals.

Shenzhen went a step further, extending the ban to dogs and cats. The new law will come into force on 1 May.

Thirty million dogs a year are killed across Asia for meat, says Humane Society International (HSI).

However, the practice of eating dog meat in China is not that common - the majority of Chinese people have never done so and say they don't want to.

Fornication Preserved In Amber

Fossilized Flies

New research takes getting "caught in the act" to a whole new level with a pair of flies frozen in the act of fornicating. The climax of their life came to an abrupt end when a glob of sticky amber engulfed them, only to be dug up, found, and photographed by curious humans millions of years later.

The discovery, along with other specimens preserved in amber, are some of the oldest known from southern Gondwana - an ancient supercontinent that existed some 180 million years ago before its "last gasp," breaking up into modern-day South America, Africa, Madagascar, India, Antarctica, and Australia. The trove of amber fossil finds includes the oldest known ants from the region, juvenile spiders, biting midges, 'slender springtails', liverwort, and moss species.

Finding the "fossiliferous ambers in Australia and eastern New Zealand is a dream come true for a palaeontologist in this country, as amber preserves fossils in exceptional 3D space, just as they died many millions of years ago. Many researchers consider amber to be a 'Holy Grail' in the discipline," said lead author Jeffrey Stilwell, an associate professor at Monash University, to IFLScience.

The team unearthed more than 5,800 amber pieces in the Macquarie Harbour Formation in Western Tasmania and Anglesea Coal Measures in Victoria, Australia. The amber dates back to around 53 million (early Eocene) and 41 million years ago (middle Eocene), respectively.
