An older gentleman with white hair and always dressed in a white suit is summoned to various households in order to save housewives from their domestically challenged spouses. In the 1960s, he was known as the "Man From _____?_____"
The Glad brand originated in the United States in 1963 when the owner and CEO of the company, David Darroch, launched "Glad Wrap", a polyethylene film used as a food wrap.
The Man from Glad is the Glad company's spokesman featured in many of their advertisements. He is an older gentleman with white hair and is always dressed in a white suit. In the 1960s, he was known as the "Man From Glad", and was summoned to various households in order to save housewives from their domestically challenged spouses. He wore a trenchcoat and would arrive in a wild variety of spy type contraptions (such as a jet pack or gyroglider), in the style of The Man from U.N.C.L.E and Mission: Impossible.
He has been portrayed by several actors over the years, most famously Tom Bosley. The trash bags' slogans were "Why Take Chances, Get Glad!" and "Don't get mad! Get Glad!"

Glad. Sounded quite like the title of the contemporary TV show The Man From Uncle, a show I watched in the '60s. In 1963 Glad was founded to sell polyethylene plastic film to preserve food. Before plastic film was available, sandwiches were commonly wrapped in wax paper before going in the lunch box. The plastic wrap was engineered to cling to itself, so the food was better protected from going stale before consumption compared to wax paper. Glad Wrap was soon joined by Glad Bags, which was more convenient to use. Today Glad also produces trash bags.

Finally, Geraldine's mother wrote Ms. Lehmann, and she received an immediate reply. Ms. Lehmann had received all of Geraldine's letters, but the handwriting had been so bad that she was unable to read them.

• Even celebrities can make fools of themselves when meeting other celebrities. Gay author Michael Thomas Ford grew up admiring Lisa and Wendy, two women musicians in pop star Prince's band, and he watched for them each time a Prince video was shown on MTV and attended Prince concerts just so he could see them. When he discovered that a friend of his knew them, he asked that a dinner be held so he could meet them. At the dinner, the first thing he said to his idols after being introduced was, "I love you" - something he had wanted to tell them for a decade. Wendy laughed, and Lisa held his hand and replied, "We love you, too." The evening was fun, and Wendy and Lisa were fabulous, even without the teased hair and makeup they wore in the MTV videos and during concerts.

Because Rabbi Shlomo was a Jewish celebrity, their mouths fell open and they stared at him. Rabbi Shlomo noticed the boys and crossed the street to greet them. The boys asked their counselor to request that Rabbi Shlomo sing a few songs for them, but he pointed out that it was nearly midnight and that the good Rabbi was probably going home tired after giving a concert. However, since the boys were insistent, he requested the songs. Rabbi Shlomo replied, "Sure! With pleasure! - and he gave them a two-hour concert under the stars.

Seth MacFarlane is clearly as bored in isolation as the rest of us. But lucky for him, he can entertain himself by doing the voices of two of the most popular characters in cartoon history: Stewie and Brian from "Family Guy."
So, he followed in the footsteps of everyone else with an internet connection and started a podcast.
Or, rather, Stewie and Brian did.
"Okay, we have played trivial pursuit until we memorized every clue, we have played candy land, we have played Sorry! - that's how bored we are, we played Sorry! - so what's left to do during quarantine but make a podcast!" MacFarlane said as the voice of Stewie in an audio clip he posted to his Instagram as an IGTV video.
Meghan Markle's First after being a working royal has been confirmed.
Disney+ confirmed the duchess will narrate an original movie, Elephant, which will stream on the new service from April 3.
The film is about a family of elephants and their journey across the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa. Its release will come just two days after Meghan officially steps back as a working royal.
A trailer for Elephant revealed that it "follows one family's extraordinary 1,000-mile journey across Africa on an adventure that will change their lives."
Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, have not carried out any public engagements since March 9, when they attended the Commonwealth Day service in Westminster Abbey with the rest of the royal family. But the official date they stop being working royals is March 31.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association on Thursday said it will be altering long-standing rules for Golden Globe motion picture eligibility and screenings for the coming year, change that could include the unheard of step of first being seen even on broadcast TV. However, producers and studios must prove they had a "bona fide theatrical release planned to begin in Los Angeles during the period from March 15 to April 30 2020."
The HFPA, unlike other press associations, in most cases get their own private screenings for eligible films. In a break from the status quo, the organization said today it is temporarily suspending the rule that stated all members qualified to vote must be invited to an official screening at a third-party facility in the greater Los Angeles area up until no more than one week after the L.A. release of the film. In lieu of such in-person screenings, the group has revised its requirement to the following:
1) distributors must contact the HFPA to arrange a screening date on the official HFPA calendar that meets the timing requirements of the Golden Globes eligibility rules (i.e. not later than one week after the release of English-language motion pictures in Los Angeles); and 2) by that date, distributors must provide all HFPA members with a screening link or a DVD copy of the motion picture so that members may view it at home. This alternate screening procedure is in effect from March 15 until April 30, 2020, with this period subject to later review and extension.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were announced on January 11 to return as hosts of the 2021 Golden Globe Awards on NBC, though no date has been officially announced. Most observers suspect, if the past is any indication, it will likely fall on Sunday, January 10, 2021.
Hoping to escape all the coronavirus-caused economic uncertainty by winning a giant lottery jackpot?
Think again. Those jackpots are going to shrink as the pandemic tamps down lottery sales.
The group that oversees the Powerball game announced Wednesday night that it would cut minimum jackpots in half, from $40 million to $20 million, after there is a winner of the current big prize. The jackpot also could grow more slowly, with minimum increases of $2 million instead of the normal $10 million after each twice-weekly drawing.
"Powerball players in many U.S. lottery jurisdictions are under shelter-in-place orders or recommendations from their governors or mayors, which have affected normal consumer behaviors," said Gregory Mineo, the director of the Maine lottery and chairman of the Powerball Product Group. "Just like other enterprises around the world that are making adjustments, we are making proactive changes to continue to offer the world's premier lottery product."
The other national lottery game in the United States, Mega Millions, is considering a similar move.
White House plans to expand "Buy America" mandates to the medical equipment and pharmaceutical sectors could worsen shortages of urgently needed medicines and delay discovery of a vaccine for the new coronavirus, over 80 business groups warned.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and dozens of other business and trade groups urged U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and other top U.S. officials to drop plans for the order, arguing it would also damage U.S. trading relationship for years to come.
"Preventing federal agencies from sourcing medical equipment and pharmaceutical ingredients from abroad ... would only exacerbate the supply shortages racking the United States," said a letter from the groups, which was also addressed to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, a long-time trade hawk who is crafting the order, told Fox News late on Wednesday evening that he expected movement on the issue shortly.
Navarro said the executive order would provide long-term incentives to U.S. companies to produce equipment in the United States through Buy America provisions, deregulation and incentives for 3D printing and other advanced technologies.
We interrupt coverage of the current disaster to inform you that a greater but slower-moving calamity has not taken a holiday. A major glacier in East Antarctica has retreated 5.4 kilometers (3.3 miles) in 22 years, satellite observations have revealed.
Despite a handful of exceptions driven by local conditions, the vast majority of the planet's rivers of ice are in retreat. However, a finding from East Antarctica suggests more than half the world's ice is locked up in this one region - enough to raise sea levels by 1.5 meters (5 feet). Several factors also make it one of the most resistant parts of the planet to global heating-induced melting, so if glaciers are retreating there, nowhere is safe.
A paper in Geophysical Research Letters reports that the Denman Glacier has lost 5 kilometers (3 miles) of length between 1996 and 2018. Since 1979, 268 billion tons of the glacier's ice has melted, a volume sufficient to cover all of England more than 2 meters (7 feet) deep.
The Denman holds around 3 percent of East Antarctica's ice - on its own it could add 1.5 meters (5 feet) to global sea level. The expression "glacial pace" may need reworking.
A newly created system can enhance quantum communications over longer distances-a small but crucial step toward a quantum internet.
We're in the early stages of a quantum boom, as researchers are attempting to augment our computing and communications capabilities with systems employing the weird mathematics that govern subatomic particles. One of the core goals of this era are networks that can transmit quantum information over longer scales, which scientists think could lead to advances in cryptography, sensing, or even distributed quantum computation. But these are mainly dreams; such a network cannot truly exist without components like repeaters to extend the distance that quantum information can travel or transducers that can convert quantum information into transmittable photons. This new paper brings the field closer to inventing a quantum repeater.
"Classical repeater stations measure that signal and amplify a copy of it," Harvard physics graduate student Mihir Bhaskar told Gizmodo. "This is how all information gets across the world. In building a quantum network, we're trying to do a similar thing, but we're communicating with single photons."
A team at Harvard and MIT developed a central node that effectively cuts in half the distance that a message has to travel. The system, held at nearly absolute zero Kelvin inside of a dilution refrigerator, consists of a diamond with a "vacancy" produced by replacing two carbon atoms with a single silicon atom, creating a region that can temporarily store the quantum state fed in by a photon, inside of an ultra-cold dilution refrigerator.
Neanderthals were eating fish, mussels and seals at a site in present-day Portugal, according to a new study.
The research adds to mounting evidence that our evolutionary relatives may have relied on the sea for food just as much as ancient modern humans.
For decades, the ability to gather food from the sea and from rivers was seen as something unique to our own species.
Neanderthals living between 106,000 and 86,000 years ago at the cave of Figueira Brava near Setubal were eating mussels, crab, fish - including sharks, eels and sea bream - seabirds, dolphins and seals.
The research team, led by Dr João Zilhão from the University of Barcelona, Spain, found that marine food made up about 50% of the diet of the Figueira Brava Neanderthals. The other half came from terrestrial animals, such as deer, goats, horses, aurochs (ancient wild cattle) and tortoises.
