Tom Danehy: Tom skips basketball for an evening of GOP March Madness (Tucson Weekly)
As everyone knows, last Thursday was the best day of the entire year. It was the first day of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, a day when graveyard-shift workers can join writers and other unemployed people to veg out in front of the TV all day and night, watching nail-biting hoops action.
Roger Ebert: Review of "The Hunger Games" (3 stars; PG-13)
"The Hunger Games" is an effective entertainment, and Jennifer Lawrence is strong and convincing in the central role. … Director Gary Ross and his writers (including the series' author, Suzanne Collins) obviously think their audience wants to see lots of hunting-and-survival scenes, and has no interest in people talking about how a cruel class system is using them. Well, maybe they're right. But I found the movie too long and deliberate as it negotiated the outskirts of its moral issues.
David Bruce has 42 Kindle books on Amazon.com with 250 anecdotes in each book. Each book is $1, so for $42 you can buy 10,500 anecdotes. Search for "Funniest People," "Coolest People, "Most Interesting People," "Kindest People," "Religious Anecdotes," "Maximum Cool," and "Resist Psychic Death."
The station's new programming director Andy Travis tries to turn around struggling radio station WKRP, despite the well-meaning efforts of the mostly incompetent staff: bumbling station manager Arthur Carlson, oily sales manager Herb Tarlek, and clueless news director Les Nessman. Rounding out the cast are super receptionist Jennifer Marlowe, enthusiastic junior employee Bailey Quarters, and spaced-out veteran disc jockey Dr. Johnny Fever. To help bolster ratings, Travis hires a new disc jockey from New Orleans, Venus Flytrap. Lurking in the background and making an occasional appearance is ruthless business tycoon Mrs. Carlson, the station's owner (and Arthur Carlson's mother).

Easy one. That 70's (and 80's) show, 'WKRP in Cincinnati'. I rather enjoyed the characters and the show... and, yes, because all men are dogs (and flies) Jennifer was a particular subject of my scrutiny. I freely admit it. Bailey, too, though for a totally different reason. See, I've always had a secret 'girl-next-door' thing... Blame that on Judy Pryzgocki... (Judy! You out there? Call me!)

I've been derelict in my commitment to The Trivia Question of the Day. As much as I enjoy reading all of the answers (even the wrong ones) it pains me, pains me, not to read my own pithy, insightful, and yes witty responses. Oh, ha ha ha! Sometimes I even amaze myself.
I have been having some difficulties with my health lately, due to a genetic disorder. Perhaps it would be better to say I've been having difficulties with my comfort level rather than my health as my health, in regards to my genetic disorder, doesn't change but my pain level does. It passes, but sometimes I don't feel like doing anything until it does.
So anyway I promised a bit about Michigan.
Since the U.S. House of Representatives has existed, there have only been eight Native Americans elected to that office. Derek Bailey, current Chairman of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians would be the ninth if elected from Michigan's First District. The District covers the entire Upper Peninsula and a portion of Northern Lower Michigan.
Derek is a dynamic young man of 40 years. He was elected as the youngest Band chairman at the age of 38 and has shown strong leadership to the Tribe as well as the non-tribal community. http://www.mynorth.com/My-North/January-2012/Northern-Michigan-Tribal-Chairman-Derek-Bailey-Runs-for-Congress/

Nevada gambling regulators have approved a license that will let singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett share in the gambling revenues from his Margaritaville casino in Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the Nevada Gaming Commission unanimously approved a gambling license Thursday for Palm Beach, Florida-based Margaritaville Holdings and its famous chairman Buffett.
The casino located inside the Flamingo on the Las Vegas Strip opened in October. Buffett has had a presence in Las Vegas since 2003 through his Margaritaville restaurant.
Buffett told commissioners he never imagined the laid-back beach tune he released in 1977 would eventually become a valuable piece of intellectual property. But he added that "Margaritaville" was "a pretty good song" and said "it worked out."

Five teenagers in school uniforms hold accordions. On the wall is a giant painting of the secret mountain hideout of their nation's founder, Kim Il Sung. Small red stickers on their instruments mark them as gifts from Kim Jong Il.
Yes, this is North Korea. But as they grind their accordions into song, what comes out is no somber ode to either of the late leaders. Instead, as more than 1.5 million YouTube viewers already know, it's one of the poppiest of 1980s-era pop songs, A-ha's "Take on Me."
The three young men and two women launch into the performance with gusto, swaying to the music, tapping their accordions and clapping their hands overhead. Their catchy cover, recorded in December, became a sensation as it challenged the world's preconceptions about North Koreans.
After taking their arrangement to Norway to perform at an Arctic arts festival, lead player Choe Hyang Hwa and fellow band members gave The Associated Press an exclusive peek into their lives at the Kumsong school in Pyongyang.
Lead accordionist Choe, a 17-year-old army officer's daughter from the border city of Kaesong, said the students study in the morning, and then practice the accordion in the afternoon. In one classroom, they gathered around a laptop computer with scores and notebooks. Later, one student chatted on a cell phone as the rest passed around plates of food: tofu, sausages, boiled eggs and oranges.
The network said Thursday its musical drama series has been picked up for a second season.
"Smash" is a much-heralded blend of backstage procedural and song-and-dance numbers. It debuted last month. It is not a ratings smash but has won critical praise and a healthy-size audience averaging 7.7 million viewers.
Series stars include Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston and Katharine McPhee as players in the unrelenting world of Broadway theater.

The 24-year-old actress announced the birth of her son on her website and Twitter feed Thursday.
Duff writes that she and husband Mike Comrie welcomed son Luca Cruz Comrie on Tuesday night. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 6 ounces and is the first child for the couple, who married in 2010.
Duff gained fame as the star of Disney's "Lizzie McGuire" and more recently had a recurring role on "Gossip Girl."
Rush Limbaugh's opponents are starting a radio campaign against him Thursday, seizing upon the radio star's attack of a Georgetown law student as a "slut" to make a long-term effort aimed at weakening his business.
The liberal Media Matters for America is using a past campaign against Glenn Beck as a template. In Limbaugh, however, they're going after bigger game. He's already fighting back and the group's stance has provoked concerns that an effort to silence someone for objectionable talk is in itself objectionable.
The ads use Limbaugh's own words about student Sandra Fluke, who told congressional Democrats that contraception should be paid for in health plans. Limbaugh, on his radio programs, suggested Fluke wanted to be paid to have sex, which made her a "slut" and a "prostitute." In return for the money, he said Fluke should post videos of herself having sex. Under sharp criticism, Limbaugh later apologized.
In one of the anti-Limbaugh ads, listeners are urged to call the local station that carries Limbaugh to say "we don't talk to women like that" in our city.
Ad time was purchased in Boston; Chicago; Detroit; Seattle; Milwaukee; St. Louis; Macon, Ga.; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The cities were selected to support active local campaigns against Limbaugh or because of perceptions Limbaugh may be vulnerable in that market, said Angelo Carusone of Media Matters.

Televangelists Paul and Jan Crouch have faced plenty of mountains building their religious broadcast empire - among them allegations of a homosexual tryst and a prolonged battle with the Federal Communications Commission - but the most recent attack on the founders of Trinity Broadcasting Network comes from their own flesh and blood.
Their granddaughter, Brittany Koper, recently filed court papers that include allegations of $50 million in financial shenanigans at the world's largest Christian broadcasting network. Her suit was followed by another from a Koper in-law, who detailed opulent spending at the network on items such as private jets, mansions in California, Tennessee and Florida and a $100,000 mobile home for Jan Crouch's dogs.
The lawsuits came after Koper's husband was accused by a debt collection company of embezzling more than $1 million from TBN. The debt collection company that filed the lawsuit later added the Crouches' granddaughter and two of her in-laws as defendants.
The outbreak of legal skirmish offers a rare window into the secretive world of the sprawling religious non-profit and exposes a family feud that could draw more outside scrutiny of TBN. Attorneys from both sides say they have contacted police and the Internal Revenue Service.
The Crouches founded TBN in 1973 and grew it into an international Christian empire that beams prosperity gospel programming - which promises that if the faithful sacrifice for their belief, God will reward them with material wealth - to every continent but Antarctica 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It has 78 satellites and more than 18,000 television and cable affiliates and owns seven other networks, as well as its headquarters in Costa Mesa in Orange County, an estate outside Nashville called Trinity Music City, USA and the Holy Land Experience, a Christian amusement park in Orlando.

A British chain of comedy clubs has taken Hollywood giant Twentieth Century Fox to court over the name of its hit television series "Glee".
Comic Enterprises, which runs four music and stand-up comedy venues called Glee Club, has made a claim against the US film and TV company for trademark infringement.
The British firm's owner Mark Tughan said many customers assume there is a link between his company and the US series, and that the confusion is damaging his 16-year-old business.
The TV comedy, about a high school singing club, has been wildly popular since its first series in 2009, but Tughan did not start legal proceedings until September in the hope its success would die down.
The government charged AT&T Inc with cheating it out of millions of dollars by knowingly failing to prevent swindlers from using a subsidized telephone service meant for deaf people.
The Justice Department said on Thursday it accused AT&T of billing for reimbursement of calls placed by ineligible international callers who used the service for purposes such as buying goods from merchants using stolen credit cards.
In a filing Wednesday in federal court in Pennsylvania, the Justice Department joined a whistleblower suit filed by a former worker at one of AT&T's call centers.
The deaf and hard-of-hearing in the United States are offered a service at no charge to place calls to hearing individuals through text messages over the Internet that are relayed by employees of a so-called IP Relay provider.
These providers, including AT&T, are reimbursed about $1.30 per minute by the Federal Communications Commission through a fund paid for by fees added to consumers' telephone bills.

Kiefer Sutherland has made peace with Twentieth Century Fox over his "24" movie, but the project has been pushed until next year, TheWrap has learned.
The movie production was set to start shooting next month after Sutherland wraps the season for his television series, "Touch," but a dispute over budget and the star's fees put the project off schedule and means it has to be pushed until next year.
"It didn't work out right now. Everyone is trying to figure out how to do it next year," an individual close to the project told TheWrap.
The plan now is for a new writer to rework the script, which Billy Ray wrote.
