Dan Savage: Another Gold-Star Pedophile
I shared your letter with Dr. James Cantor, a psychologist, associate professor at the University of Toronto, and editor in chief of "Sexual Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment." (Follow Dr. Cantor on Twitter @JamesCantorPhD.) The first thing he said, CWIA, was that you deserved praise-he called you "an ace"-for making it this far without having committed an offense.
Froma Harrop: The Real Problem with Online Piracy (Creators Syndicate)
Who is writing that brilliant, stupid, nasty, brave and/or dishonest online comment? We haven't a clue, because the author hasn't shared his or her name, hometown, gender, age and/or nationality. Or even worse, the author pretends to be another real person. Scammers, misfits, crooks, creeps, criminals and nice people all venture through cyberspace without identifying themselves. We can only guess what they're up to.
Bruce Cole: A Heroine of Popular History (Wall Street Journal)
'It's what saved me, I think. If I had taken a doctoral degree, it would have stifled my writing capacity," Barbara Tuchman once said. She took the right path. Nothing the popular historian ever wrote smelled remotely of the lamp, as we are reminded by the Library of America's new edition of two classic Tuchman works, "The Guns of August" (1962), about the outbreak of World War I, and "The Proud Tower" (1966), about the prewar period 1890-1914.
Beware: Top 10 Scams of the Year (INFOGRAPHIC)
Scams, much like viral cat videos, are a staple of the Internet. Even the savviest of Internet users can still get tangled in the web's latest harmful trick - such as these 10 highlighted from the past year.
Butt-Head Astronomer (Letter of Note)
Late-1993, renowned astronomer Carl Sagan learnt that Apple's forthcoming computer, the Power Macintosh 7100, had been given a codename of "Carl Sagan" - the joke being that they would sell "billions and billions." This was mentioned in a MacWEEK article some time later, to which Sagan sent the following letter in response. Apple soon changed the codename to "BHA." Upon learning that it stood for "Butt-Head Astronomer," Sagan filed a lawsuit for defamation of character…

Wayne and Shuster were a Canadian comedy duo formed by Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster. They were active professionally from the early 1940s until the late 1980s.
Wayne (born Louis Weingarten, May 28, 1918 - July 18, 1990) and Shuster (September 5, 1916 - January 13, 2002) were well known in Canada, and were two of Ed Sullivan's most frequently recurring guests-appearing a record 67 times on his show.

Wayne & Shuster, who won international acclaim for their distinctive gentle satiric sketches, were the founding fathers of English Canadian TV comedy. They performed "literate" comedy, combined with slapstick.
PS Joe S. is right about Sleeping Bear Dunes on Lake Michigan. A most beautiful place.
Joe S replied:
Wayne and Shuster? Never heard of 'em.
Now, should anyone think that I was ragging on Bosko in my answer to yesterday's trivia. I wasn't. I love lakes. In fact the 12 lakes presented in that web site were remarkable and beautiful lakes, it's just that Lake Michigan wasn't included. But that's been taken care of. Thanks Marty.
I have something else to say about Michigan, expressly my little part of Michigan, but I'm too tired to deal with it tonight. So I'll leave you with a teaser. I know you're wondering, what's up?
And, Dale of Diamond Springs responded:
John Wayne & Frank Shuster appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show 67 times. I thought it would have been the god-awful Shecky Green or Anna Marie Alberghetti or Senor Wences. The lady in the picture happens to be Amy Schuster, former SNL staff writer and ex-wife of Lorne Michaels. Wayne and Schuster did very heady and witty comedy. Typical Canadians!
Guys, when your sweetheart says "No thanks" to sex, do you knock back a few stiff drinks to feel better? Turns out fruit flies do pretty much the same thing. That's the word from a new study that may explain why both species react that way.
(Great... Just Great... Men = Flies... There's gotta be a beer commercial in this)
In Friday's issue of the journal Science, researchers propose a biological explanation for why "Not tonight, dear" may lead to "Gimme another beer." If it proves true in people, it may help scientists find new medications to fight alcoholism.
(All right... Where's PETA? This is cruelty, plain and simple, dagnabbit! Get the guy flies all hot and bothered, and then, nope... no sugar for you!... Jeesh... That's just plain mean)

Mildred Rinker Bailey was known to fans as "Mrs. Swing," whose slight, throaty voice won her acclaim as one of the great white jazz singers of the 1930s and 1940s
But the Coeur d'Alene Indian Tribe is now hoping to set the record straight once and for all: Bailey, who died impoverished in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1951, was an American Indian who spent her childhood on the reservation near DeSmet, Idaho.
This week, the tribe introduced a resolution honoring Bailey in the Idaho Legislature, in part to convince the Jazz at Lincoln Center Hall of Fampaved the way for many other female singers to follow."
Though Bailey's Coeur d'Alene ties may not have been common knowledge among her fans, it clearly wasn't a secret.
Still, in jazz history books, Bailey has gone down largely as a white female jazz stylist.

Who gets wetter, someone walking in the rain or running? Is it really possible to hang from a cliff by your fingers until help arrives like they do in the movies? And is Superman the only one who is faster than a speeding bullet?
Those are questions the Discovery Channel's "MythBusters" has asked for years, and starting Thursday, anybody who's wondered how long it takes to put on a superhero outfit in a phone booth - don't forget the cape - can answer them for themselves at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.
"MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition," opens Thursday, marking the first time the show has taken such questions on the road. The Chicago exhibition, which runs through Sept. 3, is the first of a planned national tour that will include stops at several other U.S. cities.
Just like on the show, the exhibit is a kind of scientific bait and switch. It starts with something visitors have seen in the movies or on TV or that they can recall from their own experiences, like dishes crashing to the floor when the tablecloth is yanked.
In a world overwhelmed by electronic gadgets that have changed the way we read, write and learn, the Jewish and Islamic arts of calligraphy have preserved their methods for generations.
Parchment, feathers and "qalams," a pen made of dried bamboo, are still used by sophers - Jewish scribes - and khattats - Muslim calligraphers. Calligraphy is one of the main art forms in Judaism and Islam, reflecting how central the word is to both religions.
The Quran has played a major role in the spread of the Arabic language and alphabet, as have Judaism's Torah and other holy books in the preservation of Hebrew.
Both Muslim and Jewish scribes say deep knowledge of religion infuses the graceful lines of their calligraphy and is essential to the art, which they say ensures the art's survival into the future - something no electronic tool will be able to bring.
The comedian Gallagher is hospitalized in stable condition after suffering a heart attack at a North Dallas bar before going on stage for a show.
Gallagher's promotional manager, Christine Scherrer, says the 65-year-old is sedated and "slowly recovering" after collapsing Wednesday night.
Marc Cummins, the manager of Coach Joe's Hat Tricks in Lewisville, says the comedian collapsed in his office about 20 minutes before a show that was due to start at 9 p.m.
Cummins says the club's promotions director performed CPR on Gallagher before paramedics arrived.
Prosecutors say there is insufficient evidence to file charges against Michael Madsen stemming from his arrest last week after a fight with his teenage son.
A district attorney's spokeswoman says a prosecutor rejected filing a misdemeanor cruelty to a child charge Wednesday.
The "Reservoir Dog" and "Kill Bill" star was arrested by sheriff's deputies Friday at his home in Malibu.
Detectives investigated allegations that Madsen was under the influence of alcohol and fought with his son, who did not need medical attention.

Russell Brand was taken into custody by New Orleans police on Thursday and booked for simple criminal damage after a photographer accused the British comedian and actor of grabbing his iPhone and tossing it through a window, authorities said.
Bail was set at $5,000 for Brand, said New Orleans police spokesman Officer Garry Flot. Brand was released shortly after his arrest, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office.
Celebrity website TMZ posted photos of "Get Him to the Greek" star Brand, in a dark jacket and torn jeans pulling an iPhone from a man in a car. Another photo on the site shows a broken window through which Brand was said to have thrown the phone.
The paparazzi photographer filed a police report over the incident, which happened on Monday.
But Brand defended himself with an ironic comment on his Twitter page on Wednesday. "Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory," Brand said.
Germany's top federal appeals court is set to rule Friday on whether a Berlin museum must return to a Jewish man from Florida thousands of rare posters that were seized from his father by the Nazis.
Lower courts have ruled that Peter Sachs, the son of collector Hans Sachs, is the rightful owner of the vast collection of advertisements and political propaganda dating back to the late 1800s, and now believed to be worth between euro4.5 million and euro16 million ($6 million to $21 million).
What the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe must decide is whether the law provides for Sachs to get the posters back from the German Historical Museum, a decision complicated by their unique and tumultuous journey through more than 70 years of German history.
It said last month it must "review and clarify" the situation, in which the posters were stolen from Germany's leading private collector by the Nazis' Gestapo, moved on to the possession of communist East Germany, then to the Berlin museum after reunification - and now through some five years of legal battles.
Sachs, 74, of Sarasota, is seeking the return of 4,259 posters that have been so-far identified as having belonged to his father. They were among a collection of 12,500 that his father owned, which include advertisements for exhibitions, cabarets, movies and consumer products, as well as political propaganda - all rare, with only small original print runs. It is not clear what happened to the remainder.

Viagra-dependent former (?) drug addict Rush Limbaugh has joined Twitter. The outspoken conservative talker announced on his radio show Thursday that he now has an account on the social messaging service in an effort to combat his critics and mobilize his "army" of supporters.
"Everybody has been asking me what they can do to help in all of this, and I've been saying, 'Nah, just do what you've been doing just, if you listen, keep listening, that's fine," Limbaugh said, according to Politico. "But there's an army out there that wants to be mobilized, and so, I figured, use Twitter for it. I'm just going to put some things on Twitter that you can help us circulate. It's that simple you just retweet them."
It did not appear at the time of this publication that anyone has retweeted him, but three Twitter users-two supporters, one not-so-supportive-replied. Limbaugh's account already has more than 102,700 followers.

The estate of an 81-year-old man who died after falling off a lift at the Jell-O Museum in western New York has filed a lawsuit.
Rochester media outlets report that the lawsuit filed in federal court in Rochester earlier this week by Frank LaMont Jr.'s estate names the defendants as the U.S. government, the Le Roy Historical Society, which owns the museum, and the companies that serviced, sold and installed the lift.
LaMont was living at the Canandaigua Veterans Affairs Medical Center in October 2010, when he visited the museum. LaMont was fatally injured when the scooter he was sitting on rolled through the back door of the museum's wheelchair lift.
The lawsuit claims his death was the result of negligence by the V.A. and the defective design and maintenance of the lift.
An Andy Warhol portrait of Elvis Presley depicted as a cowboy is coming to a New York City auction and could fetch anywhere from $30 million to $50 million.

The auction house says it's the first "Double Elvis" to appear on the market since 1995.
The silver silkscreen painting shows the rock and roll heartthrob armed and shooting from the hip. A second, shadow Elvis figure is in the background.
Warhol produced a series of 22 images of Elvis. Nine are in museum collections.
