Anecdotes

Husbands and Wives

• Actress Pia Zadora was very young when she married Meshulam “Rik” Riklis, a much older, very wealthy man. When she became pregnant, he was very happy and joked to her, “Now you’ll have somebody your own age to play with.”

Insults

• Don’t mispronounce the names of people who have sharp tongues. Hollywood actress Jean Harlow once approached the wife of the Prime Minister of England, and said, “Why, you must be Margot Asquith,” mispronouncing her name by pronouncing the ‘t’ in “Margot.” Ms. Asquith replied, “No, my dear, the ‘t’ is silent, as in ‘Harlow.’”

• Groucho Marx was known for his ability to insult people. This did have a disadvantage. Dick Cavett says that Groucho once complained that he couldn’t insult anyone anymore. Some people he wanted to insult, but when he insulted them, they laughed, and then they told other people, “Did you hear what Groucho just said to me?”

Language

• When Hispanic actor Antonio Banderas first came to the United States to make movies, he did not speak English, although he was good at making English speakers think that he spoke English. When he met Arne Glimcher, who was to direct him in The Mambo Kings, he kept slapping him on the back, grabbing his arm and laughing, and saying a few English words such as “oh, yeah,” “of course,” and “right, right.” Eventually, Mr. Glimcher said to him, “You don’t understand a word I’m saying, do you?” Mr. Banderas responded by smiling and laughing. That was when Mr. Glimcher knew that he was in the presence of the actor he wanted to star in his movie. (Mr. Banderas did learn English for real and very quickly — he studied it eight hours a day so he could speak English in The Mambo Kings.)

• Actor Eli Wallach attempted to learn French by watching French films. During World War II, he had dinner with a free French family in Casablanca. After dinner, the family’s child was sent off to bed, so Mr. Wallach said to the child a few words that he had learned from a movie. To his horror, he learned that instead of saying “Kiss me good night,” as he had intended, he had said, “Sleep with me.”

Makeup

• While making the B horror movie Evil Dead in rural Tennessee, actor Bruce Campbell was frequently covered in fake blood made in part from Karo Syrup. Sometimes, he would film all night, get in the back of a pickup truck while still covered in “blood,” then pass spit-polished families going to church. He always smiled, waved, and pretended that everything was absolutely normal.

• Comedian Robin Williams dressed in drag when the character he was playing in Mrs. Doubtfire disguised himself as an elderly nanny. The disguise was very effective. While filming in North Beach, California, Mr. Williams — dressed as Mrs. Doubtfire — stopped at a newsstand and looked through Playboy. A college student saw him and told a friend, “That old lady sure is hip, man.”

• Debbie Reynolds starred in many musicals as a dancer and singer. It’s not always a glamorous job — dancers sweat a lot and sometimes have to yell for pits makeup. When that happens, the dancer raises her arms in the air, and the makeup person mops up the sweat and powders the dancer’s armpits.

Throwback Thursday Trivia Question from Yesterday

Cue Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture - why did Quaker's Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat have a picture of a cannon on the package?

The Cereal That's Shot From Guns                                                      Source

Alexander Pierce Anderson (November 23, 1862 – May 7, 1943) was an American plant physiologist, botanist, educator and inventor. His scientific experiments led to the discovery of "puffed rice", a starting point for a new breakfast cereal that was later advertised as "Food Shot From Guns".

Anderson finally captured attention at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. He brought eight bronze, twenty-inch-long cylinders that appeared to many onlookers to be small cannons. Anderson loaded each "cannon" with six pounds of raw rice and applied heat. When he uncapped them, a blizzard of expanded rice showered into a two-story-high, forty-foot-wide cage. Helpers bagged the rice and sold it for a nickel to delighted onlookers. By fair's end, Anderson's team had puffed more than 20,000 pounds of rice and sold a quarter-million packages.

He obtained patents on the process and started the Anderson Puffed Rice Company in 1905. American Cereal, a subsidiary the Quaker Oats Company, sold his new product as a breakfast cereal called Puffed Rice. Two years later Quaker Oats took over production. Anderson partnered with Quaker Oats and developed puffed rice and wheat products, including the cereal Quaker Crackles. Quaker Oats advertised puffed cereal as "Prof. Anderson's Gift". Quaker added Puffed Wheat to their line, proclaiming the ready-to-eat cereal as "The Eighth Wonder of the World". Later, the puffed grain would be nicknamed "Food Shot From Guns".        Source

QUAKER PUFF WHEAT & RICE SHOT FROM GUNS | YouTube

Mark. was first, and correct, with:
Quaker Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat were said to be shot from guns.
Therefore, the advertising used music from the 1812 Overture.

Mac Mac said:
   Shot from guns

Alan J answered:
The Puffing process used puffing guns.

Cal in Vermont wrote:
Ah, America's love of guns wasn't so fraught with angst back in the day. The cereals were pitched as being "Shot From Guns!" which made them puffy like they were. Quaker also made Sugar Puffs which masked the taste of burnt gunpowder. I always wondered why peace-brotherly-loving Quakers had anything to do with guns at all...

Stephen F responded:
   Shot from guns

zorch replied:
Because it was ‘the cereal that’s shot from guns’.

mj wrote:
   I don't know if it's apocryphal
But the advertisements of those two cereals claimed the light, fluffy texture was achieved by shooting the effect by shooting the grain from "guns". "Nutrition and flavor and lots of fun. The weight watchers' cereal shot from guns."

Dave said:
Because both products were created by the Gun Puffing process. We had some gun puffs where I worked too. And they do sound like guns too, except louder. Grain is conveyed into a closed chamber where it is super heated by steam for a set period of time, then a valve is opened to expose the chamber to atmospheric pressure and the cereal violently puffs and explodes out of the chamber into a bin. Then the puffed cereal goes through a drying process. Post Honeycomb and Golden Crisp is made by gun puffing. General Mills makes extensive use of gun puffs for their ready to eat cereal line.

Adam answered:
It is suggested to be part of the puffing process.

Daniel in The City replied:
The public first got a look at Quaker Puffed Rice at the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904, when eight bronze cannons exploded rice over the heads of a huge crowd. When rice kernels are heated under high pressure and exposed to steam, the kernels expand rapidly. You might even say they explode. The result is puffed rice.
Sales of Quaker Puffed Rice Cereal were fairly lackluster from the time they were created until 1913.
In 1913, an advertising man named Claude C. Hopkins was assigned to help create an ad campaign for the cereal. Hopkins toured the Quaker factories looking for ideas. When he realized that puffed rice was actually made by using puffing guns (flash pressurizing and heating the grain until it expands or explodes), he let the cereal's manufacturing process speak for itself.
Quaker Puffed Rice's new slogan, "The grains that are shot from guns", was a huge success. Sales of the cereal "shot" through the roof.

Deborah, the Master Gardener responded:
I well remember eating a lot of Quaker Oats and various puffed grains as a kid. I also remember the commercials, mostly due to the music (I studied classical pian), and never knew why the fanfare for puffed grains. So I did a little noodling around and found this:

Because Quaker's Puffed Rice & Puffed Wheat was allegedly "shot from guns"! Quite disillusioning as I had believed Quakers were a peace loving cult.

Side note: Though I got yesterday's trivia question wrong, it's notable the Wrecking Crew member Carol Kaye also created These Boots Were Made for Walking bass line on the spot. She's a wonderful talent.

Barbara, of Peppy Tech fame said:
Because they were "shot from guns," according to the commercials.

Jim from CA, retired to ID, answered:
As the commercial went.......this is the cereal that is shot from guns.....

Joe S  (We resisted, we voted, we won. Get over it)  replied:
It's the Cereal shot from guns. That's how the the rice and wheat got puffed up, I bet'cha. It could happen.

Sales Soar 2,650% After Breakup

Daft Punk

Fans of Daft Punk streamed the French electronic duo’s music by the millions on Monday after the group, who have pushed the boundaries of electronic music and repeatedly cast a gleeful, grooving spell on the world, announced that they were calling it quits after nearly 30 helmeted years together.

Streams for Daft Punk’s catalog soared nearly 500% on Monday compared to Sunday, while song sales were up 1,335% and digital album sales were up 2,650%, according to Alpha Data, the data analytics provider that powers the Rolling Stone Charts. From the brilliant funk-house of their debut album Homework to the shimmering disco of their 2013 Grammy-winning Random Access Memories, fans had plenty to choose from.

Overall, it was their sophomore album Discovery, their sprawling futurist record that sent electronic music in a new direction in 2001 and ranks Number 236 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, that led by digital album sales and on-demand audio streams on Monday. Discovery saw over 1.5 million on-demand streams on Monday, an increase of 429% compared to the day before. The album also saw an increase of digital album sales of over 8,000%. Their next five most popular albums by streams on Monday were: Random Access Memories (up 600% in streams), Homework (up 714%), Alive 2007 (up 294%) and TRON: Legacy (up 360%).

Spotify reported a 242% increase in Daft Punk “discoveries” on Tuesday, with nearly half a million people (459,334) streaming Daft Punk for the first time that day. Pandora also reported a 1,546% increase in artist station adds.

Daft Punk, composed of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de-Homem Christo, announced on Monday that they were breaking up in an eight-minute long video called “Epilogue,” in which the two robots walk into the desert where one of them gets blown up.

Miyazaki’s Classic To Be Adapted For The Stage

‘Spirited Away’

Hayao Miyazaki’s 2001 Oscar winning animated film, Spirited Away (Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi), has been set for a stage production which will have its world premiere in Tokyo in 2022. This is the first-ever stage adaptation of the beloved movie and will be written and directed by Tony and Olivier Award-winner and Honorary Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, John Caird (Les Misérables, Nicholas Nickleby, Daddy Long Legs). Japanese giant Toho is behind the project.

The original film, from Studio Ghibli, went on to become the highest-grossing movie ever in Japan, holding the spot for 19 years and only recently being overtaken by Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train. It had a re-release in fall 2020 and has grossed over $355M worldwide.

The story follows Chihiro, a 10-year-old girl moving with her parents to their new home. They lose themselves in a mysterious world of fantastic spirits, ruled over by the sorceress Yubaba, who turns Chihiro’s parents into pigs. After a series of bizarre and dangerous challenges, including the loss of her identity, Chihiro must use all her wits to survive in this strange place and return to the human world.

Chihiro will be doubly played by Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi. Hashimoto (Beginning Today It Is My Turn) will make her stage debut with Spirited Away. Kamishiraishi is known internationally for her voice work in Your Name and Weathering With You.

Toho is known globally for the Godzilla franchise as well as Akira Kurosawa’s works. The company’s theatrical department has presented numerous original and licensed musicals and plays in Japan. They include Broadway and West End imports such as Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, My Fair Lady, Man Of La Mancha, Fiddler On The Roof, La Cage Aux Folles, RENT, Jekyll & Hyde, Jersey Boys, Beautiful The Carole King Musical and The Producers. Toho also recently co-produced the Broadway musical Tootsie. Spirited Away is part of the programs celebrating the 90th anniversary of Toho.

Gender-Neutral Makeover

Mr Potato Head

A gender-neutral makeover will see Mr Potato Head become the toy formerly known as Mr Potato Head.

The classic toy's branding is being "reimagined for the modern consumer", its US maker Hasbro announced on Thursday.

The rebranded toy, which can be assembled with a selection of different body parts and clothes, will be released in autumn this year, Hasbro said.

Mr Potato Head was one of the main characters in Toy Story, an animated film series produced by Pixar and released by Walt Disney Pictures.

Dissing The Base

Rupert

A Fox "news" station suspended its anchor following social media outrage for his tweet expressing annoyance over obese people getting the Covid-19 vaccine on priority.

Blake McCoy made the controversial remark on Tuesday afternoon and later deleted his tweet, issuing an apology for his “insensitive and offensive” comment.

“I’m annoyed obese people of all ages get priority vaccine access before all essential workers,” he said in the now-deleted tweet.

“When most stayed home, we went into work everyday last March, April, May and everyday since putting ourselves & loved ones at risk. Vaccinate all essential workers. Then obese,” he said.

Within hours of his initial comments, the news anchor was forced to issue an apology, saying he regretted what he said in his tweet.

Anal Probe

US Diplomats

China on Thursday denied subjecting U.S. diplomats to COVID-19 anal tests following reports from Washington that some of its personnel were being made to undergo the procedure.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told reporters at a daily briefing that “China has never asked U.S. diplomats in China to go through anal swab tests.”

A U.S. State Department spokesperson said Washington was “committed to guaranteeing the safety and security of American diplomats and their families while preserving their dignity, consistent with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations as well as other relevant diplomatic law provisions.”

The Washington Post reported last week that some U.S. personnel had told the department they had been subjected to the anal tests.

The procedure has been applied in China because it is reportedly more accurate than nasal or mouth swabs.

Acknowledges Descendants

Cherokee Nation

A longstanding dispute over who can be considered a citizen of the Cherokee Nation finally came to a conclusion this week.

The Cherokee Nation Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the tribal nation remove the phrase “by blood” from its constitution and other tribal laws. That change formally acknowledges that the descendants of Black people once enslaved by the tribe — known as the Cherokee Freedmen — have the right to tribal citizenship, which means they are eligible to run for tribal office and access resources such as tribal health care.

The recent decision by the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court is a response to a 2017 ruling by a US federal district court, which determined that the descendants of the Cherokee Freedmen are entitled to full tribal citizenship rights under a treaty the Cherokee Nation made with the US in 1866.

Many Native Americans were enslaved alongside African Americans during the colonial period — Brown University historian Linford D. Fisher estimates that 2 million to 5.5 million Native people were enslaved from the time of Christopher Columbus to around 1880.

But some wealthier tribal citizens, particularly in tribes in the Southeast that had adopted certain norms of White settlers, also practiced slavery themselves. That includes the Cherokee people, some of whom in the early 1800s had started to enslave African Americans.

At Its Weakest

Gulf Stream

The warm ocean current that keeps northern Europe habitable is weaker than at any time in the previous thousand years, sediments and ice cores indicate. The finding increases the likelihood the current will weaken further, with catastrophic implications for the UK and Ireland, and bad news for many other places.

For thousands of years the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), better known as the Gulf Stream System, has controlled northern Europe's climate. Before that, the AMOC's near-total shut down 12,000 years ago is considered the prime suspect for producing the Younger Dryas event, where the world briefly plunged back into the ice age it had recently left.

Oceanographers have debated how a recent weakening compares to past movements, and whether it is a random drop or the start of a frightening trend. Professor Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research has brought together multiple lines of evidence for the AMOC's strength since 400 AD.

The AMOC is driven by dense salty water sinking in the North Atlantic. Lighter freshwater disrupts the process. It is feared excess rainfall or ice melting from surrounding areas will be enough to interfere, bringing the whole process to a halt.

Northern Europe is a climate anomaly. Nowhere else in the world are conditions so suitable for human survival so far from the equator. When Jacques Cartier explored Labrador he found it so bleak he called it; “The land God gave to Cain” to punish him for killing Abel. Yet the latitudes he was exploring were barely north of his native Brittany. It would take centuries before oceanographers would work out it was the Gulf Stream that made the difference, saving Cartier's homeland, along with Britain and Scandinavia, from Arctic winters.

Down 26% In Mexico

Monarch Butterflies

The number of monarch butterflies that showed up at their winter resting grounds in central Mexico decreased by about 26% this year, and four times as many trees were lost to illegal logging, drought and other causes, making 2020 a bad year for the butterflies.

The government commission for natural protected areas said the butterflies’ population covered only 2.1 hectares (5.2 acres) in 2020, compared to 2.8 hectares (6.9 acres) the previous year and about one-third of the 6.05 hectares (14.95 acres) detected in 2018.

Because the monarchs cluster so densely in pine and fir trees, it is easier to count them by area rather than by individuals.

Gloria Tavera, the regional director of Mexico’s Commission for National Protected Areas, blamed the drop on “extreme climate conditions,” the loss of milkweed habitat in the United States and Canada on which butterflies depend, and deforestation in the butterflies’ wintering grounds in Mexico.

Illegal logging in the monarchs wintering rounds rose to almost 13.4 hectares (33 acres), a huge increase from the 0.43 hectare (1 acre) lost to logging last year.
