Marie Benoît: Why Malta's men weigh in as Europe's fattest (guardian.co.uk)
European Union figures released this week make grim reading for British men, 22% of whom, we are told, are obese. But it is Malta that has the dubious honour of heading the league table. Here, a quarter of men are at least 20% over their healthy maximum weight.

Saturday Night Live alum Jimmy Fallon is reportedly being wooed by NBC to take over Late Night hosting duties when Conan O'Brien moves to The Tonight Show in 2009.
According to the New York Times, Peacock execs are in talks with Fallon about signing a holding deal to keep the 32-year-old comic actor in the network fold as a possible O'Brien replacement for the 12:30 a.m. Late Night chores, though there's no assurance he'd actually get the gig.
He would likely be one of several contenders, including possibly Carson Daly, whose Last Call follows O'Brien at 1:30 a.m. Daly has reportedly expressed interest in the earlier slot, but hasn't opened discussions with NBC, per the Times.

Responding to complaints that the movie musical "Dreamgirls" distorted the history of Motown, makers of the Oscar-nominated film said in newspaper ads on Wednesday that the picture was a work of fiction and apologized for any confusion with the legendary record label.
The full-page advertisements paid for by DreamWorks Pictures were published on Wednesday in Hollywood's two major trade papers -- Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter -- a day after voting on the Academy Awards ended.
The film, adapted from the hit Broadway musical of the same name, is loosely based on the story of one of Motown's greatest acts, Diana Ross and the Supremes. But the film has rankled a number of recording artists, writers and others connected with the label who felt Motown was falsely depicted in a negative light, Motown spokesman Paul Freundlich told Reuters.
Motown great Smokey Robinson has complained in recent weeks about film scenes depicting a Gordy-like character played by Jamie Foxx launching his fictional label with money obtained from mobsters and engaging in the illegal practice of "payola," in which music producers pay radio stations to spin their records. Robinson has said Gordy engaged in neither of those activities.
An eccentric 1960s rock-star known for his trademark blond frizz and white sunglasses is about to embark on his first French concert tour in 34 years after half a lifetime in exile in the United States.
The return of 62 year-old Michel Polnareff for a series of 40 performances starting next week is being hailed as France's showbiz event of 2007, with generations of fans anxious to discover the reclusive musical prodigy in the flesh.
An accomplished instrumentalist whose father wrote songs for Edith Piaf, Polnareff had a string of melodic hits from 1966 such as "La poupee qui fait non" (The doll who shakes her head), but he left France for Los Angeles in 1973 after he was cheated by his manager and unable to pay his tax bill.
Polnareff's anti-conformist reputation was established early on when his song "L'amour avec toi" was banned from broadcast till late at night because it contained the words, "I just want to make love to you". In 1972 he was prosecuted and fined for revealing his buttocks on an advertising poster.

The seemingly never-ending saga of Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" album rolls on, as the group has once again postponed the project's release.
The band announced in December that "Chinese Democracy" was tentatively due March 6, but with that date fast approaching, the album is back off the schedule.
"There is no official release date, as the band is currently mixing, but after some delays and scheduling difficulties, things appear to be moving along," reads a post on GNR's Web site.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who mocked George W. Bush as the devil in a U.N. speech, said on Wednesday he was sending sulfur to Brazil for the U.S. president's visit there next month.
During a tour of an oil reserve with his Argentine counterpart Nestor Kirchner, Chavez held up a small vial of the pale-yellow element and said he would send to their fellow leftist ally and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Echoing his mock complaint last year at the U.N. General assembly that the podium reeked of the substance after a Bush speech, Chavez said, "It smells of sulfur here, comrade."

An appearance in family court sought by Kevin Federline amid a child custody dispute with Britney Spears was canceled Thursday after the pop star entered a rehabilitation program. Spears has gone into the Promises Malibu drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, her manager, Larry Rudolph, confirmed in an e-mail to The Associated Press. He gave no details.
The TV entertainment magazines "Extra" and "The Insider" and the Web site TMZ said Spears' mother, Lynne Spears, drove her daughter to the center, which she had reportedly been in and out of earlier in the week.
Spears and Federline reportedly agreed Wednesday night that he would keep their two young sons while Spears was in rehabilitation, a program that takes between 30 and 45 days.

Pop singer Michael Jackson could be about to convert to Islam, his brother told a British Muslim newspaper Thursday.
Jermaine Jackson said he thought it was "probable" that his eccentric brother, known for hits including "Thriller" and "Bad", would follow his lead by converting to the faith.
"He could do so much, just like I am trying to do. Michael and I and the word of God, we could do so much," he added.
Jermaine, who converted to Islam in 1989, came second in the British reality television show "Celebrity Big Brother", during which he struck up a friendship with Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, who faced alleged racist bullying.

A high school teacher allowed a group whose declared mission is to "raise an awareness of the danger of Islam" to distribute literature in his class, including a handout titled "Do Not Marry a Muslim Man," according to an advocacy group.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations says a representative from the Kamil International Ministries Organization, based in Raleigh, spoke to a ninth-grade world history class at Enloe High School and distributed the literature, which also discussed Jesus.
The father of a Muslim student reported the incident, said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper. The council wrote to Wake County schools Superintendent Del Burns asking that the incident be investigated and that the teacher be disciplined.
On its Web site, Kamil describes itself as a Christian group "dedicated to teaching the truth about Islam" and says its mission "is to raise an awareness of the danger of Islam."
