Andrew Tobias: David Brooks Will Miss Obama
"Obama radiates an ethos of integrity, humanity, good manners and elegance that I'm beginning to miss …" - David Brooks; "Oh, and he also steered us back from the brink of global depression, killed Bin Laden, and stuff like that." - Andrew Tobias.
Davey and Goliath is an American clay-animated children's television series produced by the Lutheran Church in America and created by Art Clokey, Ruth Clokey, and Dick Sutcliffe. The show was aimed at a youth audience, and generally dealt with issues such as respect for authority, sharing and prejudice. Eventually these themes included serious issues such as racism, death, religious intolerance and vandalism. Each 15-minute episode features the adventures of Davey Hansen and his "talking" dog Goliath (although only Davey and the viewer can hear him speak).
Following Clokey's success with the Gumby series, Davey and Goliath premiered on January 1, 1960 and lasted until 1965. After its initial run, several 30-minute holiday special episodes were created in the late 1960s. The series then resumed with some new characters in 1971 and continued until 1973. In 1975, a final 30-minute summer episode was created.

I don't remember who that claymation couple are. All I can think of it Gumby and Pokey, and I know that's not them.
Your story about the Chuck Berry concert in Germany is great! I thoroughly enjoyed it, as I'm sure you did.

Lois Of Oregon replied:
Never saw Davey & Goliath as we were more Gumby fans at my house, and we hates religious indoctrination, too! I refuse to read the wiki page about it so I'm totally unaware of what the show was actually about. However, DID find some interesting images on a "Davey and Goliath" google image search. If a picture's worth a thousand words this show was unspeakably debauched, like all evangelical enterprises, ( I don't care if the results are accurate or not ). Note that Goliath appears rabid. Coincidence or Divine Plan?
Also really pissed about Madeleine Albright's daming me to hell for my refusal to vote for that chick Hillary. Guess I'll see Davey & Goliath there, too.

Sunday, 25 November, 1963, Davey & Goliath was pre-empted for coverage of the JFK assassination,

British health authorities announced Thursday they have issued criminal charges against the producers of Star Wars: The Force Awakens over an on-set accident in which Harrison Ford broke his leg.
The actor was struck by a hydraulic door on the set of the Millennium Falcon - his character Han Solo's spaceship - at Pinewood Studios near London in June 2014. He was airlifted to a hospital where he underwent surgery.
Production on the film was suspended for two weeks after the injury to Ford, who was 71 at the time.
The Health and Safety Executive said Thursday it had charged Foodles Production (UK) Ltd. - a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Co. - with four breaches of workplace health and safety laws.

Scientists for the first time have detected gravitational waves, ripples in space and time hypothesized by Albert Einstein a century ago, in a landmark discovery announced on Thursday that opens a new window for studying the cosmos.
The researchers said they identified gravitational waves coming from two distant black holes - extraordinarily dense objects whose existence also was foreseen by Einstein - that orbited one another, spiraled inward and smashed together at high speed to form a single, larger black hole.
The waves were unleashed by the collision of the black holes, one of them 29 times the mass of the sun and the other 36 times the solar mass, located 1.3 billion light years from Earth, the researchers said.
The scientific milestone was achieved using a pair of giant laser detectors in the United States, located in Louisiana and Washington state, capping a decades-long quest to find these waves.
The two instruments, working in unison, are called the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). They detected remarkably small vibrations from the gravitational waves as they passed through the Earth. The scientists converted the wave signal into audio waves and listened to the sounds of the black holes merging.
The number of business and interest groups lobbying in state capitols has risen nearly 11 percent in recent years as organizations have shifted some efforts away from the stalemates in Washington to statehouses, which are more apt to act on key policy initiatives, according to a new study.
An analysis released Thursday by the Center for Public Integrity found that the growth in statehouse lobbying coincided with a nearly one-fourth decline in the number of entities registered to lobby the federal government from 2010 to 2014.
The trend could be influenced partly by Republican electoral victories in 2010. The GOP takeover of the U.S. House restored a partisan divide to Washington after two years of Democratic control of Congress and the White House. Republicans also surged in statehouses that year, winning 25 legislatures and 29 governors' offices, and have continued to build their state majorities since then.
The Washington-based nonprofit analyzed lobbying registrations gathered by the National Institute on Money in State Politics. It found 101 businesses, associations or interest groups that had lobbyists in at least two-thirds of the states between 2010 and 2014. That includes 21 entities registered to lobby in every state at some point during that period.

Another low snow year in Alaska has organizers worried about where to start the world's most famous sled dog race.
The Iditarod always begins with a ceremonial, fan-friendly slow jaunt along the streets and trails of Anchorage a day before the start of the competitive portion of the nearly 1,000-mile race. The ceremonial start is scheduled for March 5.
A lack of snow last year north of Anchorage forced the start of the race to be moved to Fairbanks from its traditional starting point in Willow, about 75 miles north of Anchorage.
Anchorage set a record for low snow totals last year at 25.1 inches. The total so far this year is 25.8 inches. A normal annual snowfall total in Anchorage is 74.5 inches.
The city of Cleveland wanted the family of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy who was fatally shot by police 15 months ago, to pay for his ambulance ride, though the mayor now says it was all a mistake.
According to a creditor's claim filed Wednesday in Cuyahoga County Probate Court, the city was asking to be reimbursed $500 "for emergency medical services rendered as the decedent's last dying expense." An itemized bill from Cleveland EMS includes $450 for "ambulance advance life support" and $50 for mileage, according to an invoice filed with the claim.
"The callousness, insensitivity, and poor judgment required for the city to send a bill - its own police officers having slain 12-year-old Tamir - is breathtaking," Subodh Chandra, an attorney for the family, said in a statement to NBC's WKYC-TV affiliate. "This adds insult to homicide."
In a news conference on Thursday, Mayor Frank Jackson apologized for the billing, saying that supervisors should have been alerted and the claim never should have been filed.

Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca has agreed to plead guilty to lying to federal investigators conducting a corruption and civil rights probe of the nation's largest county jail system, the U.S. Attorney's Office said on Wednesday.
Baca, 73, who served as the top elected law enforcement official in Los Angeles for 15 years before retiring in January 2014, would spend up to six months in jail under terms of his plea agreement, if accepted by a judge, U.S. Attorney Eileen Decker said.
The deal would make Baca the 18th current or former member of the sheriff's department convicted of criminal charges that stem from a long-running federal investigation of corruption and suspected abuse of inmates at two downtown Los Angeles lockups.
Decker said Baca agreed to plead guilty to a single federal charge of making false statements to investigators in 2013 when he asserted he had no prior knowledge of efforts by his deputies to intimidate an FBI agent and thwart a criminal probe of his department.
Specifically, Baca has admitted that he actually was aware that his deputies were going to contact the agent and that he had directed them to "do everything but put handcuffs" on her, according to his plea agreement, Decker said.

The Vatican on Monday announced a new series of policies and projects following a weeklong assembly of a commission aimed at preventing child sex abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. But the ousting from the Pope Francis-appointed panel of one of its most outspoken members has cast doubt on its commitment to reform.
The Vatican's press statement did not mention its decision on Saturday to suspend Peter Saunders, a survivor of clergy abuse who had been enlisted to join the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. Critics say the controversy, which comes amid widespread scrutiny of the appointment of a Chilean bishop accused of concealing abuse, is only the latest example of the church's continued need for increased accountability and external oversight.
"This notion that the church needs new policies and panels and procedures and protocols-it's really just smart PR, but it's also very, very, very disingenuous," said David Clohessy, a survivor of clergy abuse and founder of the national support and advocacy group Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests. The commission's efforts "on paper look great," he said. "It's just that they're never enforced."
The church's initiatives include a proposal to "remind all authorities in the church of the importance of responding directly to victims and survivors who approach them" and the planning of a workshop later this year to establish more transparency around canonical trials. Pope Francis created the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors in March 2014, a month after the United Nations accused the Catholic Church of failing to acknowledge the extent of its crimes. In a report issued by the U.N.'s Committee on the Rights of the Child, the international human rights organization urged the Vatican to report child abusers to law enforcement, expel them from their positions, and make its archives public to hold high-ranking abusers accountable for their crimes.

That the Catholic Church has a long, tragic history of child sex abuse is well known. In 2014, Pope Francis estimated that 1 in 50 Catholic clergyman are likely pedophiles - amounting to about 8,000 priests in churches globally. The pontiff has said he was dedicated to addressing the dark mark on the church, but a new development may undo all of that.
According to Crux, the Catholic Church has a new message for its clergy when it comes to sexual abuse: Keep it quiet. As part of a training course for new bishops, French Monsignor Tony Anatrella is reportedly informing the recently ordained that they have no duty to report allegations of sexual abuse to the authorities. Instead, Anatrella, who is also a psychotherapist known for his controversial views on gender and sexuality, argued that the decision to alert authorities should rest with victims and their families.
According to the Guardian, which obtained a copy of Anatrella's training manual, "According to the state of civil laws of each country where reporting is obligatory, it is not necessarily the duty of the bishop to report suspects to authorities, the police or state prosecutors in the moment when they are made aware of crimes or sinful deeds."
This is all despite a task force the pope created in March 2014 to address the issue. At the time of its inception, the commission's aim was said to protect youth by "taking criminal action against offenders, educating people about the exploitation of children, developing best practices to better screen priests and defining the civil and clerical duties within the Church," the Irish Times reported, citing a statement from the Vatican.
But in an ironic twist, Crux reported that last year the commission wasn't involved at all in the clergy training, despite its purpose to identify what the outlet called "best practices" in combatting sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

Kentucky lawmakers want to create two marriage license forms, one designed for gay couples and another for straight couples, in a move critics say harks back to the "separate but equal" days of the civil rights movement.
One marriage license form would note the "bride" and "groom" and the other form would note "first party" and "second party." Bill sponsor Republican Sen. Stephen West of Paris said couples, both gay and straight, could use either form.
The bill also removes the name of the county clerk who issued the license and would require couples to note their gender, no matter what form they chose, for the benefit of historians and genealogists who use marriage license records for research purposes.
The proposal cleared a Senate committee Wednesday with bipartisan support. It comes five months after Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis spent five days in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because of her religious beliefs, despite a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that effectively legalized gay marriage nationwide.

Whatever is responsible for killing a man in India over the weekend is unlikely something from space, according to NASA.
Police recovered remains of an object that fell from the sky Saturday. They are being analyzed.
"Initial assessments, based on photos posted online, are not consistent with something from space. Small meteorites do not start fires or cause explosions when they hit the ground," NASA said in a statement Wednesday.
"To form a crater the size of what has been posted online would have required a meteorite of at least several kilograms. While more details may be forthcoming from local scientists, this is unlikely something from space."
P. K. Senthil Kumari, the police chief in Vellore district in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, had told CNN that the object struck the grounds of an engineering school at about midday Saturday, making a loud noise and leaving an impact crater about 60 centimeters (2 feet) deep.
