Anecdotes

Movies

• As a ballerina in the former Soviet Union, Natalia Makarova was asked to star in a movie of Swan Lake. However, she discovered the movie director lacked taste, although he thought he was capable of teaching her how to dance the role of Odile. When he told her, “Dance as if you wanted to seduce me,” she replied, “I haven’t the slightest desire to do that to you,” and then she walked off the set and refused to return. The director was forced to find another ballerina to dance the role of Odile.

• Whenever Fred Astaire was ready to shoot a big dance number for one of his films, word would go out across the studio, and lots of people would come around to watch the dancing. Anthony Perkins was doing a Western while Mr. Astaire was filming Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn, and he remembers lots of gunslingers watching the filming of “Clap Yo’ Hands.”

• The year 1940 was a very bad year for Fred Astaire, who starred in the turkey Second Chorus, but it was a very good year for his former dance partner Ginger Rogers. When she won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Kitty Foyle, Mr. Astaire sent her this one-word telegram: “OUCH.”

Names

• The mother of the great tap dancer Savion Glover, one of the creators of Bring in ’da Noise, Bring in ’da Funk, knew he was special when she was pregnant with him. In fact, his name comes from a religious vision his mother had — she saw God writing a name on a blackboard: SAVIOR. She read the name, then said, “Now, You know I can’t name him Savior.” Therefore, she substituted an “n” for the “r.” To a great extent, Mr. Glover has been the savior of modern-day tap dancing, bringing it into the era of hip-hop.

• Edward Villella and other dancers called ballerina Melissa Hayden “Old Ironsides” as an affectionate mark of respect for her hard work and determination. One of the things she did to get energy for dancing was to inject herself with vitamin B12. One day, thinking Mr. Villella needed some extra energy, she told him, “Honey, take down your pants.” He obeyed her — and was rewarded with a needle in his butt.

• Russian ballet dancer Elena Lukom ran into a problem when she performed in Sweden because audience members laughed when she was introduced. Fortunately, she was able to solve that problem easily. She discovered that in Swedish her last name meant “rest room,” so whenever she toured in Sweden she changed her last name to Lukova.

• Loïe Fuller started a dancing school whose pupils danced for her. The pupils’ real names were kept secret from the general public on the grounds that they were from prominent families that might be embarrassed by the publicity, and on the dance programs they were given pseudonyms such as Buttercup, Chocolate, Peach, Pinky, and Smiles.

Native Americans

• When the Native American tribe known as the Wampanoag dance, they dance both clockwise and counterclockwise. When they dance clockwise, they are thanking the good spirits. When they dance counterclockwise, they are paying respect to the other spirits — the evil ones.

• According to many Native Americans of Canada, the Northern Lights are actually a dance. When the Northern Lights appear in the sky, one sees the spirits of the ancestors dancing.

Nudity

• The costumes for Bronislava Nijinska’s Les Biches underwent several changes before the ballet’s premiere. The costume worn by dancer Vera Nemchinova originally was a full-length evening dress; however, costume designer Marie Laurencin very quickly cut off the train. Ballet producer Sergei Diaghilev then cut off the rest of the skirt. When Ms. Nemchinova complained that the costume made her feel naked, Mr. Diaghilev told her to buy a pair of gloves.

• Sometimes what you think you see is not what you actually see. To create an illusion of nudity, female dancers sometimes wear flesh-colored costumes on which nipples and navels have been painted. Sometimes what you think you see is what you actually see. In 1978, Vivi Flindt stripped off all of her clothing to perform the dance of Salome for the Royal Danish Ballet. Her husband, Flemming Flindt, danced the role of Herod.

Throwback Thursday Trivia Question from Yesterday

Born Mary Jane West in 1893, this American actress, singer, playwright, screenwriter, and comedian was one of the most controversial movie stars of her day. Known for her lighthearted, bawdy double entendres and breezy sexual independence, what is the name of this woman whose career spanned seven decades?

Mae West (born Mary Jane West; August 17, 1893 – November 22, 1980) was an American actress, singer, playwright, screenwriter, comedian, and sex symbol whose entertainment career spanned seven decades. She was known for her lighthearted, bawdy double entendres and breezy sexual independence, and often used a husky contralto voice. She was active in vaudeville and on stage in New York City before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the film industry.

West was one of the most controversial movie stars of her day; she encountered many problems, especially censorship. She once quipped, "I believe in censorship. I made a fortune out of it." She bucked the system by making comedy out of conventional mores, and the Depression-era audience admired her for it. When her film career ended, she wrote books and plays, and continued to perform in Las Vegas and the United Kingdom, on radio and television, and recorded rock 'n roll albums. In 1999, the American Film Institute posthumously voted West the 15th greatest female screen legend of classic American cinema.        Source

Mae West. With early 1930’s Hollywood hit films like She Done Him Wrong and I’m No Angel (both 1933), West became the top box office draw and during at least one year was the highest paid actor in the business. She spotted a young Cary Grant on the Paramount lot, and insisted on giving him the male lead in She Done Him Wrong, telling the producer, “If he can talk, I’ll take him.” That gave Grant’s career a big boost. West didn’t star in a film until she was nearly 40, but became a comedic sex symbol even though she wasn’t classically beautiful and was fairly plump by then.

Golden Globes To Honor

Norman Lear

Norman Lear made his mark as a television producer who strived to explore race relation issues through his famed sitcoms “All in the Family” and “Good Times.” And now, the Golden Globes will honor Lear with its TV special achievement trophy.

Lear will receive the Carol Burnett Award during the 78th annual ceremony on Feb. 28, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Thursday. He is a writer, director and producer who champions television diversity with other classic hit sitcoms such as “The Jeffersons” and “Sanford and Son.”

HFPA President Ali Sar said in a statement that Lear is among the “most prolific creators of this generation.” He also said Lear’s work “revolutionized the industry.”

The Carol Burnett Award is given annually to honor someone “who has made outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen.” It’s the small-screen version of the group’s film counterpart, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which will be handed to Jane Fonda during the awards ceremony.

Lear, 98, is a six-time Emmy winner whose shows confronted war, sexuality, abortion, and poverty with topical humor. His other popular series include “Maude,” “One Day at a Time” and “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.”

Nominations

GLAAD Media Awards

For their 32nd annual ceremony, the GLAAD Media Awards expanded to nearly 200 nominees.

Netflix leads with 26 total nominations, a majority of the 58 nominations earned by streaming services. Broadcast and cable networks earned, 14 and 29, respectively. Animated romp “Big Mouth,” tender dramedy “The Half of It” and coming-of-age favorite “Sex Education” are among Netflix’s highlights.

Ryan Murphy alone earned six nominees, primarily for his work with Netflix. He served as producer, creator or executive producer of “The Prom,” “Boys in the Band,” “Hollywood,” “Ratched,” and “Circus of Books.”

Beyond entertainment, the GLAAD Media Awards recognizes excellence in journalism and other forms of media. Variety earned a nomination for outstanding magazine overall coverage, alongside The Advocate, Billboard, People and Plus. The reinstated Barbara Gittings Award for Excellence in LGBTQ Media will honor Windy City Times for its 35-year legacy as Chicago’s pioneering LGBTQ news publication.

GLAAD added two new categories to honor newcomer success in music and the growing LGBTQ representation in kids and family programming. Nominees for outstanding children’s programming include “Summer Camp Island” and “The Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo”, while outstanding breakthrough music artists recognize Orville Peck, Phoebe Bridgers, Rina Sawayama and Victoria Monet, among others.

Quietly Bows Out

Kris Kristofferson

Country singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson has quietly retired from touring after more than 50 years in the music business.

The news, buried in a news release earlier this week, comes a year after the "Me and Bobby McGee" singer played his last gig on the Outlaw Country Cruise in the Caribbean in January 2020.

The announcement came in a news release that said a new management company would represent Kristofferson's business affairs, alongside his son John, after Kristofferson "offically retired in 2020."

Kristofferson rose to fame in the 1970s in Nashville and wrote classics including "Help Me Make it Through the Night" and "For the Good Times."

Catalog Sold For $30 Million

Sun Records

Sun Records hit paydirt in the 1950s with a string of made-in-Memphis hits by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and others. But how much are those old songs worth these days?

An estimated $30 million, according to the New York Times and other sources Thursday. That’s reportedly how much music publisher Primary Wave Music recently paid to buy the rights to the Nashville-based music label Sun Records catalog, logo, brand and other assets including a restaurant.

Not included in the deal were Elvis Presley’s recordings, which are owned by Sony.

Sam Phillips opened Memphis Recording Service at 706 Union Avenue in 1950, producing a string of R&B and rockabilly hits, including what some believe to be the first true rock ‘n roll record.

Childhood Home Named Chicago Landmark

Emmett Till

The childhood home of slain teenager Emmett Till has been declared a landmark by the Chicago City Council.

Till, a 14-year-old Black boy from Chicago, was killed while visiting his family in Mississippi in the summer of 1955. Till was kidnapped, beaten and lynched after he was accused of whistling at a white woman.

When Till's body was returned home, "Till's mother, Mamie, held an open-casket funeral to show the world the horrifying violence her son had suffered," and "Till's death became a rallying cry for the civil rights movement," the Chicago City Council said in its decision Wednesday.

Two white men, J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant, went on trial for Till's killing. They were acquitted in September 1955 by an all-white jury after deliberating for about an hour. The men later reportedly confessed to the slaying.

The home, at 6427 S. St. Lawrence Avenue, was built in 1895, according to the city. Advocates hope to turn the house into a museum, The Chicago Sun-Times reported. Landmark status keeps the house from being torn down or undergoing major alterations, according to The Chicago Tribune.

100+ Bills To Restrict

Voting Rights

After an election filled with misinformation and lies about fraud, Republicans have doubled down with a surge of bills to further restrict voting access in recent months, according to a new analysis by the Brennan Center for Justice.

There are currently 106 pending bills across 28 states that would restrict access to voting, according to the data. That’s a sharp increase from nearly a year ago, when there were 35 restrictive bills pending across 15 states.

Ten states are considering new voter ID requirements, including six states that do not currently require voters to present ID at the polls, according to the Brennan Center.

Two states, Mississippi and New Hampshire, are considering placing new limits on the kinds of IDs that can be used.

Giant Sequoias Blown Over

Yosemite

First came the wind — gusts Yosemite National Park spokesman Scott Gediman estimated at 80 to 100 mph. Then came the crashing and crunching in the park’s Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Then rain and snow.

Now, as the toll becomes clearer, Gediman said, the “Mono wind event” that began Jan. 18 has caused perhaps “the most damage” measured in the park’s recorded history, including hundreds of fallen trees and crushed structures.

“We found 15 giant sequoias that were completely toppled by the wind” in the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in the southern part of the park, Gediman said. "There could be more."

The park closed Jan. 19 to keep visitors safe from the storm. It remained off-limits to the public Thursday as rangers assessed the damage and marveled at the lack of storm-related injuries. Downed trees in Yosemite Valley include black oaks, ponderosa pines and incense cedars. There may be many more downed trees along Glacier Point Road, Gediman said. “We have not been up that road yet,” he said.

Painting Fetches Record $92M

Sandro Botticelli

A portrait by Sandro Botticelli has sold for $92m (£67m) at auction, breaking a new record for the Italian renaissance painter.

Young Man Holding a Roundel is believed to have been painted in the 1470s or 1480s and is considered one of Botticelli's finest portraits.

The painting sold for $80m (£58.2), but the final price will be $92.2m (£67.1m) when fees and commissions are added.

It is understood Young Man Holding a Roundel has been handed down through several generations of an aristocratic family in Wales for about 200 years.

It has spent much of the last 40 years on public display since its current owner acquired it in 1982 for just £810,000.
