Felix the Cat is a funny animal cartoon character created in the silent film era. Theanthropomorphic black cat with his black body, white eyes, and giant grin, coupled with the surrealism of the situations in which his cartoons place him, combine to make Felix one of the most recognized cartoon characters in film history. Felix was the first character from animation to attain a level of popularity sufficient to draw movie audiences.

I have memories from the early 1960s of my pre-school aged younger brother watching Felix the Cat cartoons on TV when I was a young teenager. Didn't much care for them. I preferred Rocky & Bullwinkle and Warner Brothers cartoons.

I saw that and wanted to shout "Fritz the Cat" whether or not it's true.
So far the biggest orange from our tree weighed in at 1.64 lbs. I hope it's as juicy as the smaller ones.
I never read Cracked, and my memory failed to remind me that Mad magazine's guy was Alfred E. Neuman. Oh, the shame.
Kevin K. in Washington, DC replied:
That is "Felix the Cat". All I remember is a mouse and some throwing of
bricks.
Oops. I mixed up Felix with "Krazy Kat". The cat shown is Felix, but it was
Krazy Kat who got bricks thrown at her by Ignatz the Mouse.
My bad.

The cartoon character is Felix the Cat, with his bag of tricks.
I've been friends with the Shammas family for 45 years. Nick Shammas bought the rights to use the character in the late 1950's for his Felix Chevrolet dealership on Figueroa in LA which still exists today. Both Mr. And Mrs. Shammas have passed away and the family has been selling off many of his dealerships (Downtown LA Motors) but Felix will always be family owned. When many dealers moved to the suburbs because the grass was greener, Felix stayed in LA and worked to improve the neighborhood. Nick started by fixing cars for his teachers in high school and wound up owning an automotive empire that was one of the largest in the nation. He never forgot where he came from and always gave back to the community. Good guy, I miss him.

Damn it Felix!
You blood thirsty cat!
DJ Useo replied:
Why that be Felix The Cat. Who lived one story down from Fat Freddys Cat. Rofl.
Felix was VERY popular in his time, & I've read reprints of his comics, & seen the animated shorts that reveal why he was beloved.
A good reliable laugh to those of us who prize that sort of thing.
Why, I even liked the Bakshi 90's series from Saturday mornings. Go figure!
I mean, who can honestly say they don't wish they had a magic bag !? I know I do. ;)
Patriot Act NSA Spying Unconstitutional Section 215 National Security Letters Must End
My name is Marc Perkel and I have decided to announce that I will not comply with the so called "Patriot Act" laws requiring me to disclose information about my customers. If I receive a national security letter I will immediately photograph it, post it online everywhere I can, and then make a video of me burning it. I will then await my arrest. If you want to put me in jail then come get me mother fucker.
Computer still isn't quite right, but have figured out a work-around.
Kinda why I prefer old computers - rather have the equivalent of an old VW Bug that I can work on myself than something brand new that has to be taken in to the shop for every hiccup.

Carlos Almaraz, John Valdez, Frank Romero and Patssi Valdez are not household names for most of us, but for comedian Cheech Marin they are. Members of Chicano art collectives like Los Four and ASCO, they are just some of the names that first drew him in the mid-'80s to Chicano art, an obsession that compelled him to amass the most renowned collection in the world with over 700 pieces.
"I moved into this new house that's really a gallery, so I get to put up a lot of art," Marin tells The Hollywood Reporter on the eve of Art Los Angeles Contemporary (ALAC) art fair at Barker Hangar, Jan. 28-31. As part of the event, the performer is opening up his Pacific Palisades home for a unique VIP tour of a portion of his collection. "You can't love Chicano art unless you see it. It's my goal to have everyone see it."
First glance highlights include "Two Chairs," Almaraz's sprawling canvas in blue, green and yellow decorating the foyer. Nearby is an illuminated glass portrait of an aqua-hued deity called "A Dios" by the de la Torre brothers. "An Afternoon in Meoqui," Wayne Alaniz Healy's sunny, stylized scene of a rural picnic hangs over the kitchen table, and there's more in the dining room and upstairs in the hallway.
Marin, who toured portions of his collection in the aughts with "Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge," is happy to see this type of art getting the respect it deserves. Going back to the 1930s, Mexican artists impacted New York and European art circles through people like Diego Rivera, as well as muralists who found work with the WPA during the Great Depression.

Website Directs All Veterans Donations To Personal Foundation
T-rump
After ducking the final Republican presidential debate heading into next week's Iowa caucuses, GOP front-runner Donald Trump announced that he would hold his own pro-veterans event during the debate to raise money for veterans. Trump even set up a special website to solicit donations to help veterans.
"Honor their valor," the website, donaldtrumpforvets.com, states. "Donate now to help our Veterans."
The website, which is nothing more than a single page with stock photos and a credit card donation form, claims that "100% of your donations will go directly to Veterans needs."
There's only one problem: 100% of the money raised on the site goes directly to Donald Trump's personal non-profit foundation, according to a disclosure listed at the bottom of the page.
Confirmation e-mails sent to individuals who contributed via the website confirm that rather than going directly to veterans, all contributions made from the site go directly to Donald Trump's personal foundation.
The ancient Babylonians used geometry to calculate the position of Jupiter 1,400 years before scholars in Europe were believed to have come up with the technique. The discovery is the earliest ever example of geometry being used to calculate positions of spacetime - and could indicate Western science was influenced by these ancient astronomers.
Mathieu Ossendrijver, a professor at Humboldt University in Berlin who specialises in Babylonian astronomy, made the discovery by studying five tablets dating to between 350 and 50 BC. He had long known of four of the tablets - but they were damaged, meaning he could not fully translate the information on them. He knew they involved geometrical computations, and thought they may involve Jupiter, but did not have enough information to go on to make any solid claims.
However, in 2015, he came across a set of photographs showing a previously unknown Babylonian astronomical tablet held at the British Museum in London. After examining it, he realised it related to the other four - acting as a key to unlock the information they contained. "The fifth one, was essential for forming a sense of the whole," he told IBTimes UK.
The tablets contain geometrical calculations based on a trapezoid's area, using its long and short sides. They showed the two intervals from when Jupiter first appears on the horizon, depicting it at 60 and 120 days. They also worked out the time when Jupiter has covered half the 60 day distance by positioning the trapezoid into smaller ones. The findings are published in the journal Science.

Viacom Inc Executive Chairman Sumner Redstone will undergo an examination on Friday by a doctor hired by an ex-girlfriend in a lawsuit that challenges his mental competency, a spokesman for the former girlfriend said.
Dr. Stephen Read, a geriatric psychiatrist retained by former girlfriend Manuela Herzer, will examine Redstone at his California home at 11:30 a.m. PST on Friday, the spokesman said.
Investors are closely following the lawsuit by Herzer, who alleges that Redstone was mentally incompetent when he removed her as his designated healthcare agent last October in favor of Viacom Chief Executive Officer Philippe Dauman.
Read may interview Redstone for up to an hour, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Cowan ruled last week. The executive's nurses and speech therapists may be present, but not Herzer's lawyers, Cowan said.
Redstone controls about 80 percent of the voting shares in Viacom and CBS Corp through a holding company.
Jennifer Herold, a mother of two, is running for the 7th House district seat in the Ohio legislature. An occupational therapist, the Republican candidate has two main issues on her platform: mental health awareness and funding for schools.
But her opponent, state Sen. Tom Patton (R-Putz), is drawing attention to another element of her campaign. On a radio show last week, he emphasized the fact that Ms. Herold is a young mother.
"The gal that's running against me is a 30-year-old, you know, mom, mother of two infants," Patton said on America's Work Force radio show with Ed Ferenc.
"I don't know if anybody explained to her you have to spend three nights a week in Columbus. So, how does that work out for you? I waited until I was 48, until my kids were raised, and at least adults, before we took the opportunity to try."
Mr. Patton, who told the radio host that he hasn't faced any primary challenges since 2002, went on to call Ms. Herold by what some adults would consider a term of condescension - "sweetie."

Arizona's Republican governor launched a renewed effort Thursday to break up the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, citing reasons outside longstanding GOP complaints that the court covering nine Western states is too liberal.
Gov. Doug Ducey (R-Puppet) said Arizona should move into a different region or Congress should create another circuit because of the court's extreme caseload, large geographic area and high rate of cases overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Ducey has the backing of Arizona U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake and U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon, both Republicans. Ducey's staff said legislation is expected to be introduced in Congress soon, and Flake said he is drafting a bill.
Republicans have floated efforts to split the circuit for decades, many citing the court's liberal slant but also noting the high caseload. All the proposals, including the last in 2005, have failed in Congress.

Hotel heir Conrad Hilton has been ordered into substance abuse treatment after failing drug tests and violating his probation.
City News Service says a Los Angeles judge ordered Hilton into a residential treatment program for at least 90 days. The judge rejected a request by authorities to put Hilton behind bars for 60 days.
The 21-year-old was sentenced to probation and community service last year after pleading guilty to disrupting a British Airways flight.
Authorities say he violated probation by trespassing, failing drug tests, failing to complete three treatment programs and traveling out of California without permission from his probation officer.

Samy Mohamed Hamzeh wanted to shoot up a Milwaukee Masonic event center in the name of Islam because he thought the group that owns it is "playing with the world like a game," according to federal authorities.
Hamzeh, 23, has been charged with unlawfully possessing a machine gun and receiving and possessing improperly registered firearms in what authorities say was a planned mass shooting at a Masonic temple. Some people who know Hamzeh, however, have cast doubt on whether he was capable of such an attack, including a former co-worker who said he smoked a lot of marijuana.
While the FBI has not publicly identified which temple, DeGrave said the FBI told the fraternity that the alleged target was the Humphrey Scottish Rite Masonic Center in downtown Milwaukee. That location, he said, had been used for banquets and wedding receptions, but has been restricted since last year to Masonic functions.
The federal criminal complaint does not make clear whether Hamzeh or informants recommended the Masonic center as the target. But Hamzeh told informants: "They are all Masonic; they are playing with the world like a game, man, and ... we don't know what's going on, these are the ones who are fighting, these are the ones that needs to be killed." He said later, "these are the ones who are making living for us like hell."

One of Mitsubishi's legendary Zero fighter planes took to the skies over Japan on Wednesday for the first time since World War II.
The restored plane made a brief flight to and from a naval base in southern Japan. Decorated former U.S. Air Force pilot Skip Holm flew the aircraft.
Zero fighters were considered one of the most capable fighter planes in World War II, rivaling the British Spitfire. Their long range allowed them to play a prominent role in the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Only a few are still in operating condition.
This particular plane was found decaying in Papua New Guinea in the 1970s. It was owned by an American until Japanese businessman Masahiro Ishizuka purchased it and brought it to Japan last September.
Japanese see the aircraft both as a symbol of their country's technological advance and a reminder of the harrowing history of the war. In the last phase of the fighting, they were used for "kamikaze" attacks.
His death was confirmed by longtime publicist and friend, Cynthia Bowman, who said he died of multiple organ failure and septic shock, according to the SF Gate .
Kantner suffered from numerous health problems over the years, and had an earlier heart attack in March 2015. In October 1980, he was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in serious condition from a cerebral hemorrhage at age 39, but made what was considered to be a remarkable recovery.
Kantner formed Jefferson Airplane in 1965 with singer Marty Balin in a San Francisco folk bar called the Drinking Gourd.
The band - later also including Grace Slick, Jorma Kaukonen, Spencer Dyden and Jack Casady -performed at the original Woodstock festival and became synonymous with the LSD-spiked '60s-era as the flower power generation took over San Francisco.
Their hit "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" are both among Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."
The group broke up in 1972, and essentially split into the two bands Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship, which released the Oscar nominated song "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" from the film "Mannequin" in 1987.
Kantner would end up being the only member to appear on all Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship albums, and his songwriting became known for its whimsical or political lyrics with a science-fiction or fantasy theme, usually set to music that had a hard rock.
He continued to record and tour during his latter years and joined the band to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jefferson Airplane with special shows that also featured Grateful Dead tribute group Jazz is Dead.
Kantner is survived by three children; sons Gareth and Alexander, and daughter China.
