• Professional musicians are often asked to dinner, and after they have eaten, asked to play for their food. At one such dinner, pianist Anton Rubinstein was asked to play a valse for such guests as wished to dance. Annoyed, he did play a valse, but he introduced so many rubatos into it that he made dancing almost impossible. In addition, he started the valse at a conventional tempo, but then speeded it up so much that no one was able to dance to it.
• Like other young energetic dancers, 15-year-old Jacques d’Amboise had to learn to fight dehydration. Quickly, he discovered a system that worked for him, and whenever the servers at a West 56th Street coffee shop near City Center in New York saw him coming, they would set out a glass of grapefruit juice, a glass of milk, and a glass of water — all of which he quickly drank.
• When Josephine Baker was growing up as an impoverished black child in East St. Louis, she and her brothers and sisters used to look through garbage cans, hoping to find something that could be used to make soup — for example, they were very happy when they found some chicken heads. In the 1920s, Ms. Baker conquered Paris as a dancer.
Fouettés
• It’s possible for an audience to get distracted by the quantity of dance moves and ignore the dancing itself. For example, in Swan Lake the audience tends to count the 32 fouettés made by Odile. That’s why choreographer George Balanchine allowed very few multiple pirouettes in his ballets: “Two, maybe three … after that the audience starts to count.” Someone once said to ballerina Alexandra Danilova, “You do such virtuoso dancing, you do impressive fouetté turns, but you don’t do extreme, multiple pirouettes — why?” Ms. Danilova replied, “Because I am too busy dancing.”
• Early in her career, Natalia Makarova had great trouble with the 32 fouettés in Swan Lake. Of course, they are supposed to be performed in one spot, and the ballet dancer ought not to travel around the stage while spinning, but Ms. Makarova remembers that during her first attempt at them on stage she traveled so far that she ended up in a rear wing where she could not be seen by the audience.
• Anna Pavlova didn’t like to perform fouettés, but that doesn’t mean that she couldn’t perform them when she wanted. One day, she saw a dancer practicing fouettés — but not well. Ms. Pavlova said, “You want to learn fouetté? I show you.” She performed 64 fouettés, then left.
Gays and Lesbians
• As a gay teenager, author Joel Perry used to hide copies of Playgirl, which features a nude male centerfold each issue, under his bed. One day, his mother found them, so he told her that he was keeping them for a girl named Susie so that Susie’s mother wouldn’t find them. His mother believed him. Years later, after he had been living with a male lover for 11 years, she asked him if he was gay. After hearing that he was, she said, “Oh, honey, and you’re not even a good dancer.”
• Before Stonewall, Edythe Eyde used to go to a gay bar that was divided into two halves. One side was reserved for lesbians, and in the other side sat straight men. One day, a straight man came over and asked several women to dance with him. Being lesbians, they weren’t interested. When he reached Ms. Eyde, he said, “What’s the matter, lady? Don’t you dance with men?” She replied, “Of course not! What kind of a girl do you think I am!”
• The first lesbian couple to dance at the White House was Barbara Love and Kay Whitlock. Having gone to the White House in 1978 to present President Jimmy Carter with the International Women’s Year National Plan of Action, they waltzed together to chamber music in an outer chamber.
Annette Funicello was an original Mouseketeer, had a hit with "Pineapple Princess", and popularized "Beach Party" movies. Later, she became the spokesmom for what brand of peanut butter?
Annette Joanne Funicello (October 22, 1942 – April 8, 2013) was an American actress and singer. Funicello began her professional career as a child performer at the age of twelve. She rose to prominence as one of the most popular Mouseketeers on the original Mickey Mouse Club. As a teenager, she transitioned to a successful career as a singer with the pop singles "O Dio Mio", "Tall Paul" and "Pineapple Princess", as well as establishing herself as a film actress, popularizing the successful "Beach Party" genre alongside co-star Frankie Avalon during the mid-1960s.
In 1979, Funicello began starring in a series of television commercials for Skippy peanut butter. Her role as Skippy spokeswoman forced Funicello to turn down a role in Grease 2. In November 1985, she starred in the 16th episode of the Disney Channel documentary series Disney Family Album in an episode about her career.

Skippy I think. Yep. Damn TV commercials fill my head with nonsense. Nice sunny day for the first full day that idiot isn’t the president. But I don’t envy Joe Biden trying to undo all of Trump’s vandalism.

Annette Funicello was the spokesperson for Skippy Peanut Butter.

Well, as one whose tv watching as a small child included The Mickey Mouse Club every day it was on, I know that Annette hawked my mom’s favorite peanut butter: Skippy.
Yesterday weather-wise the wind abated and it was warm and sunny. We spent most of the morning watching the Inauguration proceedings. What a great day, and boy, are we breathing easier already. And there’s a lot of Cheeto dust Biden, et al, need to clean up, and all the other dumpster-fire level of crises. Being #46 sure ain’t for wussies.

Artist: NPFO Stratagem

“Tomorrow is Election Day [this two-track single was put the day before the Presidential election in 2020], and today Big Stir Records and NPFO STRATAGEM (an international supergroup spearheaded by STEVEN WILSON of PLASTICSOUL and PETER WATTS of SPYGENIUS) mark the occasion by doing something that more people (like, everyone, really) should be doing: unequivocally denouncing White Supremacists. ‘Back Off Boogaloo,’ a cover of RINGO STARR's 1971 single aimed squarely at the Boogaloo Bois, Proud Boys, neo-Nazis and domestic terrorists everywhere, is out […] now. It's backed by a surprising cover of a DEAD KENNEDYS classic with an even more direct message for ‘Nazi Punks.’ (Hint: It isn't radio-safe, and it definitely isn't ‘stand back and stand by’).

Nothing illustrates the political passions of a television network’s audience quite like ratings for a presidential inaugural.
The 6.53 million people who watched President Joe Biden take the oath of office and deliver his inaugural address on MSNBC Wednesday was a whopping 338% bigger than its audience for Donald Trump (R-Lock Him Up)’s swearing in four years ago, the Nielsen company said.
On the flip side, Fox News Channel’s audience of 2.74 million for Biden on Wednesday represented a nearly 77% drop from its viewership for Trump in 2017, Nielsen said.
A preliminary Nielsen estimate shows Biden’s inaugural viewership on the top six networks beat Trump by 4%. Nielsen said it doesn’t have a complete estimate for inaugural viewing because it is still counting people who watched on other networks or outside their homes.
CNN, with 10 million viewers, easily beat ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and Fox during Biden’s big moment, Nielsen said. That’s 196% more than watched Trump four years ago.
The acquisition spree continues for Hipgnosis, the music rights company that has been snapping up back catalogues at a rate of knots.
The London-listed firm announced on Thursday that it had acquired a catalogue from producer and mixer Bob Rock. The deal gives Hipgnosis rights to Metallica’s self-titled 1990 album, often referred to as “The Black Album,” and several Michael Bublé records, including his hit Christmas album.
The deal gives Hipgnosis the rights to some of the best-known songs from the two artists, including Metallica’s Enter the Sandman and Michael Bublé’s Haven’t Met You Yet.
Founded in 2018, Hipgnosis pays musicians and rights holders lump sums to acquire the rights to their music. The company then makes its money through royalty rights from streaming and by placing songs in TV and films.
In December 2020, Bob Dylan sold the music publishing rights of his entire songwriting catalog to Universal Music Publishing—a deal reportedly valued at more than $300 million. A new lawsuit was filed today by the wife and publishing company of Dylan collaborator Jacques Levy, who co-wrote songs from the 1976 album Desire (including “Hurricane” and “Isis”). The lawsuit seeks $7.25 million, the New York Post reports and documents viewed by Pitchfork confirm.
The lawsuit claims that Dylan’s team owes Levy’s family 35% of income earned from the songs Levy co-wrote. It further notes that Dylan’s team has “refused to remit to [Levy’s family] their rightful share of the revenue and/or income earned from the catalog Sale with respect to the compositions.”
“This lawsuit is a sad attempt to unfairly profit off of the recent catalog sale,” Dylan’s lawyer, Orin Snyder, said in a statement to Pitchfork. “The plaintiffs have been paid everything they are owed. We are confident that we will prevail. And when we do, we will hold plaintiffs and their counsel responsible for bringing this meritless case.”
Glastonbury Festival’s organisers have announced that the event has been cancelled for 2021.
A statement posted to the festival’s official Twitter account explained that it had been logistically impossible to make the event happen, “in spite of our efforts to move Heaven & Earth.”
A note accompanying the full statement from father and daughter team Michael and Emily Eavis said: “With great regret, we must announce that this year’s Glastonbury Festival will not take place, and that this will be another enforced fallow year for us. Tickets for this year will roll over to next year.”
Fans who secured tickets in 2019 will once again have their places rolled over to the following year, now to 2022.
A button President Donald Trump (R-Lock Him Up) used to order Diet Cokes while sitting at the Resolute Desk in the White House has apparently been moved since President Joe Biden took office.
Trump first showed off the wooden call box in 2017 interviews with The Associated Press and the Financial Times. He showed reporters that with a push of a red button, a White House butler would bring him a glass of soda in the Oval Office.
Presidents almost always redesign the Oval Office upon taking office, and the call button wasn't the only thing Biden changed.
Biden replaced a portrait of President Andrew Jackson with a portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and opted to feature a number of progressives and activists through the room, including Robert F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the labor leader and civil-rights activist Cesar Chavez.
He also chose to display portraits of Benjamin Franklin, President Thomas Jefferson, and Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton.
Lt. General Charles A. Flynn, the brother of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, was present during a meeting about the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol Building.
According to a report in The Washington Post, the Army denied for days that Charles Flynn was present. However, he confirmed to the newspaper Wednesday that he was indeed in the room during a call in which Capitol Police and D.C. officials “pleaded” with the Pentagon to urgently dispatch the National Guard to help quell mounting tension.
The report notes Flynn left the room before the meeting ended, asserting that then-Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy would manage the situation.
At the time, Flynn was the Army’s deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and training. The Post notes that while the D.C. National Guard answers to the president, the defense secretary, and the Army secretary delegate top Army officials to make “critical decisions” about the force.
The Army denied Flynn’s participation for days, despite inquiries from the press and amidst more lawmakers demanding transparency about the slow military response to the siege, which overran the Capitol Building and left five people dead, including a police officer.
Senator Rafael "Ted" Cruz (R-Seditionist) repeated Donald Trump (R-Lock Him Up)'s America-centric climate rhetoric as President Joe Biden rejoined the Paris agreement on his first day in office.
Cruz said in a tweet late Wednesday that by returning America to the multinational climate accord, Biden has indicated he was more interested "in the views of the citizens of Paris than in the jobs of the citizens of Pittsburgh."
When Trump announced the U.S. withdrawal from the agreement, the biggest international effort to curb climate change, in 2017 he said: "I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris."
Cruz’s comment on Wednesday was met with criticism on Twitter, with users pointing out the obvious: the Paris agreement is a multinational effort.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., responded to Cruz in a tweet, saying: "Quick question: do you also believe the Geneva Convention was about the views of the citizens of Geneva?"
A male Springbok praying mantis looking for a hook up doesn't have to worry about a female stealing his heart away. There is, however, a very good change she'll bite his head off, and he knows it.
Indeed, 60 percent of sexual encounters between Springboks -- one of nearly 2,000 mantis species across the globe -- end in males being eaten as snack.
All male mantises show extreme caution when approaching a prospective partner. Hard to blame them.
But whereas most will sneak up from behind or distract the female with a tasty morsel, the Springbok has an entirely different -- and previously unreported -- strategy for staying alive, according to findings published Wednesday in Biology Letters.
The key to victory, according to gladiatorial experiments with 52 pairs of mantises, was striking first.
