Tom Danehy: Tom is really looking forward to the Average White Band concert (Tucson Weekly)
Tonight, when most of you - if you're lucky! - will be watching the episode that comes before the penultimate episode of The Good Place (don't tell me what happens), I'll be at the Fox Theatre, awash in the sweet funk/soul sounds of what remains of one of my favorite groups of all time, the Average White Band.
Sales of this artificially flavored drink mix were poor until NASA used it on John Glenn's Mercury flight in February 1962. What is the name of this product?
Tang is an artificially flavored drink mix that was formulated by General Foods Corporation food scientist William A. Mitchell in 1957, and first marketed in powdered form in 1959. The Tang brand is currently owned by Mondelez International, a 2012 North American company split off of Kraft Foods Inc.
Sales of Tang were poor until NASA used it on John Glenn's Mercury flight in February 1962, and on subsequent Gemini missions. Since then it has been closely associated with the U.S. human spaceflight program, which created the misconception that Tang was invented for the space program.
The creator of Tang, William A. Mitchell, also invented Pop Rocks, Cool Whip, a form of instant-set Jell-O, and other convenience foods.

Tang, the drink the astronauts took to the moon (Ack, ack, ack, ack, ack).

Tang. Then kids drank it because the astronauts did.
Dave wrote:
Tang. General Foods used to manufacture Tang in the cereal factory I worked at. During the '70s it was a big seller, with production often scheduled 7 days/week. I didn't often work on Tang, but when I did it was usually unloading 12 count cases of glass jars out of a trailer in the dead of winter. They called the job "flopping jars." One of the most unappealing jobs at Post.
Deborah responded:
Oh, lordy, Tang. My mom used it instead of real orange juice. It's almost as gross as Kool-Aid. Sure, for kids, the astronaut factor was cool, but in reality, it was a nasty flavor.
Rain moved in during the night and while it's not crazy, it's certainly relentless. Should be some localized flooding by day's end.

Tang. I thought it tasted pretty good. Certainly better than Fizzies. Does anybody remember flavored straws that imparted a taste to what you were drinking? The strawberry ones were OK I think. Long time ago...

• Being famous under a pseudonym can lead to problems. Eric Blair, aka George Orwell, once learned that Ernest Hemingway was staying in a room at the same hotel he was staying at. He knocked on Mr. Hemingway's door and introduced himself as Eric Blair, and Mr. Hemingway asked what he wanted. Mr. Blair then reintroduced himself as George Orwell, and Mr. Hemingway said, "Why didn't you say so?" Then he invited him in for a drink. Mr. Blair could have told Mr. Hemingway about some odd experiences. For example, Mr. Orwell once rented a room from a landlady who was proud because she had worked for a nobleman. She was so proud that when she locked herself out of her house, she would not let her husband and Mr. Blair go next door to borrow a ladder to get to a high window and enter the house because she was too proud to associate with the neighbors. Instead, her husband and Mr. Blair walked a mile and borrowed a ladder from one of her relatives. And while working as a dishwasher and a porter in a Paris hotel, he was once ordered to get a single peach because a rich customer had ordered one. Since the hotel did not have a peach on the premises, Mr. Blair was ordered to find one or be fired. The shops were closed, but he found a basket of peaches hanging in a window. Rather than lose his job, he broke the window and stole one peach.
• For a performance by ballerina Maria Tallchief and the New York City Ballet, Japanese stagehands waxed the stage floor. Of course, this resulted in dancers slipping, sliding, and falling. After that one ruinous performance, the stage floor was restored to its usual scuffed lack of splendor. By the way, at birth, Maria Tallchief's name was Elizabeth Marie Tall Chief. She changed "Tall Chief" to "Tallchief" because she wanted to avoid problems in alphabetization at school - other students wondered whether her last name was "Chief" or "Tall Chief." Her parents called her "Betty Marie," but when famed choreographer Agnes de Mille suggested that the world of ballet already had lots of Bettys and Elizabeths, Ms. Tallchief began to use the name "Maria" instead.
• The first performance of George Frideric Handel's Messiah took place 23 April 1742, at Neal's Music Hall, located on Fishamble Street in Dublin. For this performance 700 people crowded into a space that was designed to hold only 600. The organizers of the concert realized that it would be crowded, so they bought newspaper advertisements asking gentlemen to leave their swords at home and asking women not to wear hoop skirts. By the way, the name "Fishamble" is interesting. A market used to be called a "shamble," and Neal's Music Hall used to be a fish market.
• Agnes de Mille was determined to succeed as a dancer. Once, another dancer accidentally kicked her and broke her nose during a performance. Ms. de Mille continued dancing. By the way, while rehearsing her ballet Rodeo, choreographer and dancer Agnes de Mille worried about details. Eventually, the dancers working with her changed her name from "Agnes" to "Agonize." On 16 October 1942, Rodeo premiered with Ms. De Mille dancing the lead role of the Cowgirl. She was sure that the ballet had been a failure, but after taking 22 curtain calls, she finally believed that the premiere had been a success.
• When the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright was born in 1867, he was named Frank Lincoln Wright in honor of the recently assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. He changed his name after his parents divorced, and he took his new middle name from his mother, Anna Lloyd Jones.

Mariah Carey, the Isley Brothers, Eurythmics, Rick Nowels, The Neptunes, William "Mickey" Stevenson and Steve Miller were named as the 2020 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees on "CBS This Morning" Thursday.
With 19 number one hits, more than any other solo artist, Carey leads the class of 2020 inductees. While she's known for her five-octave range, she also co-wrote most of her hits, including "All I Want For Christmas Is You," which hit number one just last month.
The Isley Brothers broke in back in 1959 with "Shout." O'Kelly, Rudolph and Ronald Isley also wrote the Grammy winning "It's Your Thing." Younger brothers Ernie and Marvin Isley and brother-in-law Chris Jasper later joined the band.
The Motown smash "Dancing in the Street," performed by Martha and the Vandellas, was co-written by Stevenson. He also co-wrote "It Takes Two" for Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston, who he later married, and "Devil with a Blue Dress On" for Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels.
Miller, the Blues guitarist and songwriter, had a run of hits in the 70s and early 80s, including "The Joker" and "Swingtown." The Steve Miller Band's Greatest Hits 1974-78 album has sold 14 million copies.
A secret operation by specialist firefighters has saved the world's last stand of Wollemi Pines, a pre-historic species known as "dinosaur trees", from Australia's unprecedented bushfires, officials said.
Fewer than 200 of the trees exist in the wild, hidden in a gorge in the World Heritage Blue Mountains northwest of Sydney, which have been hit by one of the biggest bushfires that have been ravaging much of Australia for months.
With flames approaching the area late last year, firefighters deployed air tankers to drop fire retardant in a protective ring around the trees while specialist firefighters were winched down into the gorge to set up an irrigation system to provide moisture for the grove, officials said.
The pines, which fossil records indicate are more than 200 million years old -- pre-dating many dinosaurs -- were believed extinct until the Wollemi grove was discovered in 1994.
Its location has remained a closely-guarded secret to protect the trees from contamination by visitors.
US President Donald Trump (R-Fake Hair)'s shaky grasp of geography includes not knowing that India shares a border with China, according to a new book by a pair of reporters for The Washington Post.
The book, "A Very Stable Genius" by Philip Rucker and Carol Leonnig, highlights episodes of volatile behavior by the president along with his ignorance of basic geography and history.
"It's not like you've got China on your border," the authors quoted Trump as telling Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting between the two leaders.
The book also recounts a tour by Trump of a memorial for the USS Arizona, a US warship that was sunk by Japanese planes in the December 7, 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbour.
"Hey, John, what's this all about? What's this a tour of?" Trump is quoted as asking his then-chief of staff John Kelly.
An Arizona couple says their senior living community won't allow their orphaned grandson to keep staying with them because of age limits.
The boy's mother died in 2018 at a California hospital and his father took his own life two weeks later, said his grandmother, Melodie Passmore.
Not long after, 15-year-old Collin Clabaugh moved in with his grandparents in Prescott, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of Phoenix. In December, the family received a letter last month from attorneys for the Gardens at Willow Creek homeowners association saying the community's age restrictions must be followed. The minimum age to live there is 19.
The Passmores have until June to either move or find another home for their grandson.
The Passmores, who are in their 70s, moved into their home four years ago. They plan to meet with a real estate agent but moving again will be difficult, Passmore said.
On April 10, 2017, Daniel Jorjani, a top Interior Department political appointee, sent an email to Brian Hooks, president of the conservative Charles Koch Foundation, soliciting individuals to join the board of a charitable arm of the National Park Service.
"Would any of the stakeholders' families or key network participants be interested in joining the board of the National Park Foundation?" Jorjani wrote. "It is one of our top-tier boards." He added that the board "has a few openings."
There are many such boards affiliated with government agencies and government-funded institutions, from the Tennessee Valley Authority, which is a federal corporation, to the not-for-profit Kennedy Center for the Arts. Though the boards have different functions, in one way or another they exert influence on some aspect of the federal bureaucracy, whether by providing oversight or - in a case like the National Park Foundation - raising money.
While board appointees have long been selected because of their political affiliation, wealth or stature, the president's opponents charge he has appointed individuals who are more ideologically motivated than their predecessors. In some cases, he is appointing board members who have opposed the institutions they are supposed to now monitor or guide.
For the Trump administration, appointing board members may be an effective and little-noticed means of weakening a federal apparatus it fundamentally distrusts. Not only did Donald Trump (R-Corrupt) come into office with "a disruptor mindset," said governance expert Scott R. Anderson of the center-left-leaning Brookings Institution, but he has delegated that disruption to "further-out-there wings of the Republican Party," beyond the bounds of ordinary conservatism.
Maria Campos sits in the backseat of a car with her grandchildren, her eyes welling with tears as the immigration center comes into view.
The seven-hour drive from North Carolina to the Stewart Detention Center in a remote corner of southwest Georgia has become all too familiar. One of her sons was held here before being deported back to Mexico last year, leaving behind his wife and children, who accompany Campos now. Campos fears her other son will meet the same fate after being detained when police were called on his friend.
The razor-wire-ringed detention center stands beige and gray in the green outskirts of tiny Lumpkin, where detained immigrants outnumber residents. Those immigrants are caught in a larger system of immigration courts that are facing unprecedented turmoil from crushing caseloads and shifting policies.
Lumpkin has few available resources - only three immigration lawyers work here full time. There are no hotels, and many businesses in the downtown are shuttered. In the vacuum, a small network has sprung up to help the immigrants, offering them legal advice, places for relatives to stay and even gas cards for the families.
Campos doesn't have money to pay for a lawyer, so her son is representing himself. Campos, her daughter-in-law and two grandchildren stayed at El Refugio, a house run by volunteers who help with food and gas.
In November 2004, several U.S. Navy pilots stationed aboard the USS Nimitz encountered a Tic-Tac-shaped UFO darting and dashing over the Pacific Ocean in apparent defiance of the laws of physics. Navy officials dubbed the strange craft an "unidentified aerial phenomenon," but they have remained mum on what, exactly, that phenomenon could've been. Now, unsurprisingly to anyone who's ever considered making a hat out of tinfoil, the military has confirmed they know more than they're letting on.
In response to a recent Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, a spokesperson from the Navy's Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) confirmed that the agency possesses several top-secret documents and at least one classified video pertaining to the 2004 UFO encounter, Vice reported.
According to the ONI spokesperson, these documents were either labeled "SECRET" or "TOP SECRET" by the agencies that provided them, and that sharing the information with the public "would cause exceptionally grave damage to the National Security of the United States."
These top-secret files included several "briefing slides" about the incident, provided to the ONI by an unnamed agency. (Because ONI officials did not classify the slides personally, they are unable to declassify them, the spokesperson added).
The ONI also admitted to possessing at least one video of unknown length, classified as "secret" by the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). ONI didn't reveal whether this footage is the same 1-minute video that was leaked online in 2007 and widely released by The New York Times in 2017. However, in November 2019, several naval officers who witnessed the incident aboard the Nimitz told Popular Mechanics that they had seen a much longer video of the encounter that was between 8 and 10 minutes long. These original recordings were promptly collected and erased by "unknown individuals" who arrived on the ship by helicopter shortly after the incident, one officer said.
