• Vaslav Nijinsky choreographed his ballet titled L’Après-Midi d’un Faune to Debussy’s music, which was a prelude to Mallarmé’s poem. Mr. Nijinsky created much consternation for everyone at a dinner party, all of whom thought the ballet was a wonderful introduction to Mallarmé’s poem, when he confessed that he had not read that poem by Mallarmé — or any poem by Mallarmé.
• While the great choreographer George Balanchine was lying in a hospital bed dying, one of his former wives, Maria Tallchief, visited him. Music was playing, and Mr. Balanchine was tapping his fingers together. Ms. Tallchief asked, “What are you doing, George?” He replied, “You see, I’m making steps.”
• When dancer Georges Skibine decided to become a choreographer, he asked the great George Balanchine for advice. Mr. Balanchine said simply, “Listen to the music and wait.” Mr. Skibine’s goal for his dancers became “not to dance to music, but to dance the music.”
Christmas
• Alicia Markova was dancing the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy when Doris, her sister, sitting in the audience, overheard a little boy give what Ms. Markova considered the greatest compliment of her career. The little boy saw the Sugar Plum Fairy, then turned to his mother and said, “Can I have her for my Christmas tree next year?”
Clothing
• Belly dancer Amaya — née Maria Elena Amaya — well remembers her most enthusiastic audience ever. She owned her own dance studio, and at night she turned it into a club. For a performance one night, she decided to wear a red bra that fastened in the front, along with a gold vest. As she danced, the audience grew more and more enthusiastic, clapping and cheering. After the dance, she was called out for three encores. Finally, one of her belly-dancing students revealed the reason for the audience’s enthusiasm. Her bra had become undone, but she hadn’t noticed because she was concentrating on the dance and because her vest had kept pressure on her breasts. However, the audience had definitely noticed. Amaya’s husband had been in the audience, cheering like everyone else — and taking photographs. She had the photographs developed, then looked at them in sequence. Early in the dance, she was showing a little cleavage, which grew greater and greater as her dance progressed. The final photograph showed that the dance had stopped at the moment before she would have revealed all.
• David Janssen, star of TV’s The Fugitive, and dancer Fred Astaire went to the same tailor. One day, Mr. Janssen went into the tailor’s shop and saw Mr. Astaire with a new suit. Mr. Astaire had rolled up the suit and was busy throwing it against the wall. When Mr. Janssen asked what he was doing, Mr. Astaire replied, “The way to wear clothes is to tell them who’s boss in the beginning. Then they fit you.”
• While dancing in San Francisco, ballerina Alicia Markova needed new stockings. She entered a clothing store and told the saleslady her size, but the saleslady replied, “Nobody has feet that small!” However, Ms. Markova did, so the saleslady advised her to exercise more so her feet would grow bigger.
Competition
• At the 1969 International Ballet Competition held in Moscow, Mikhail Baryshnikov danced the lead role in Vestris. Among the judges was famed ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, who was so impressed by the young dancer’s ability that instead of giving him the maximum 12 points for his rating, she gave him 13 points. As you would expect, Mr. Baryshnikov won the gold medal for the competition.
• At the 1966 International Ballet Competition held in Varna, Bulgaria, Canadian ballerina Martine Van Hamel won the overall prize for artistic interpretation as well as the women’s prize for dancing. Ironically, at her last performance, as she was taking a bow, she slipped and fell.
• In 1949, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Anton Dolin was introduced as “the greatest dancer in the world” to an African dancer, who immediately shouted, “No, I am.”
The national language of the world's tenth smallest country, formerly known as Melita, is descended from Sicilian Arabic. What is the name of this island republic?
How-w-w-DEE-E-E-E! Born Sarah Ophelia Colley, she appeared at the Grand Ole Opry for more than 50 years. By what name is the pride of Grinders Switch better known?
Sarah Ophelia Colley Cannon (October 25, 1912 – March 4, 1996), known professionally as her stage character Minnie Pearl, was an American country comedian who appeared at the Grand Ole Opry for more than 50 years (from 1940 to 1991) and on the television show Hee Haw from 1969 to 1991.
Pearl's comedy was gentle satire of rural Southern culture, often called "hillbilly" culture. She lived in the fictional town of Grinders Switch. Pearl always dressed in frilly "down home" dresses and wore a hat with a price tag hanging from it, displaying the $1.98 price. Her signature greeting to her audience was "How-w-w-DEE-E-E-E! I'm jest so proud to be here!" delivered in a hearty holler. After she became an established star, her greeting became a call-and-response with audiences everywhere. Pearl's often self-deprecating humor involved her unsuccessful attempts to attract "a feller's" attention and, in later years, her age. She also spun stories involving her comical "ne'er-do-well" relatives, notably "Uncle Nabob", his wife "Aunt Ambrosia", "Lucifer Hucklehead", "Miss Lizzie Tinkum", "Doc Payne", and, of course, her "Brother", who was simultaneously both slow-witted and wise. She usually closed her monologues with the exit line, "I love you so much it hurts!" She also sang comic novelty songs and often danced with Grandpa Jones.

COMMENT: I heard that many elected GOP members are afraid to vote against Trump for fear that his radical mob of white supremacists will threaten and/or harm them and their families. I say "That is the same fear that minorities in our country have felt for decades/centuries, but many of them had/have the courage to do their duty to protect our nation from such mobs. No one can solve this problem by hiding in fear of people who hate you for not agreeing with their view of the world. They will turn on you just like Trump turned on Pence. You are no longer a 'free' person in this nation. Your personal thoughts and beliefs are no longer allowed by that mob. "

One of the more unfortunate images to come out of the deadly violence incited by Donald Trump last week was the sight of several pro-Trump rioters wearing clothing with Captain America’s shield as they ransacked the Capitol.
After all, as more than a few people noted at the time, Captain America is well known for a few things. Like for instance he defends democracy instead of working to overthrow it like Trump’s supporters when they interrupted the certification of Joe Biden’s lawful election victory. Also, he’s a bitter enemy to genocidal fascists, instead of proudly associating himself with them, as a great many of Trump’s supporters did during their violence. And of course, he’s a patriot, unlike the traitors who started the American Civil War, whose flag several of Trump’s rioters waved.
Naturally, fans of Marvel’s Nazi-punching superhero were not amused. Fortunately, they’ll be pleased to know that according to Neal Kirby, son of comics legend Jack Kirby who co-created Cap with Joe Simon in 1941, his father would wholeheartedly agree with them. In a stirring statement shared Tuesday night by CNN’s Jake Tapper, Kirby angrily denounced Trump’s rioters who, he said, were examples of everything Captain America — and his father — opposed.
“My father, Jack Kirby, along with his partner Joe Simon, created Captain America in 1941. Perhaps the most iconic symbol of patriotism since the ‘Spirit of 1776,’ Captain America has stood as a symbol and protector of our democracy and the rule of law for the past 79 years. he was created by two Jewish guys from New York who hated Nazis and hated bullies. Captain America stood up for the underdog, and, as the story was written, even before he gained his strength and prowess from Army Scientists, always stood for what was righteous, and never backed down,” Kirby wrote.
“At 72, I have a fairly vivid personal memory of every political and cultural upheaval since Castro’s revolution in the mid – 1950’s. Add to that my father’s stories, and I could probably paint a picture of the battlefields of northern France surrounding the city of Metz in WWII as well,” Kirby continued. “However, the events that transpired at our nation’s Capitol on Jan. 6, an insurrection inspired and fomented by our own president, will be the event that haunts me forever.”
BMG announced that it has acquired “outright” Fleetwood Mac co-founder Mick Fleetwood’s interests in the band’s recordings.
The deal gives BMG Fleetwood’s royalty interest in over 300 recordings, including the hits including “Dreams” — which enjoyed a massive resurgence due to recent popularity on TikTok — “The Chain,” “Go Your Own Way” and “Landslide” from albums including the multiplatinum albums “Fleetwood Mac,” “Rumours,” “Tango in the Night” and others. It includes Fleetwood’s interest in all of their recorded work apart from their first two albums.
While Fleetwood did not write any of the above songs and has relatively few songwriting credits, his recorded-music rights as bandmember and drummer on the tracks yield him royalties connected to album sales, downloads and streaming.
BMG already has a relationship with the band, re-releasing its classic 1970 album “And Play on” and the theatrical, record and mediabook release of Mick Fleetwood & Friends, 2020’s tribute event to legendary guitarist Peter Green and the early years of the band. Fleetwood and bassist John McVie cofounded the band with Green in 1967; its most commercially successful lineup formed when Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham — both of whom recently sold their publishing rights for undisclosed amounts, although Nicks’ is reported to be $100 million — joined in 1975.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards will not share the same air date as the Grammys after all.
The SAG Awards announced Wednesday that the 27th annual ceremony has been moved to April 4.
Both awards events were scheduled to air March 14, but the SAG Awards shifted to a different date to avoid conflict with the Grammys.
The SAG Awards will air on TNT and TBS at 9 p.m. EST. The show honors outstanding film and television performances.
The Grammys had switched from Jan. 31 to March 14 due because of the recent surge in coronavirus cases and deaths. Other award shows including the Oscars and Golden Globes have pushed their ceremonies back as well.
A Tintin drawing by the Belgian artist Herge sold Thursday in Paris for 2.6 million euros ($3.1 million), breaking the record for the most expensive comic book art in history.
The 1936 work in Chinese ink, gouache and watercolor was destined as a cover for “The Blue Lotus,” the fifth volume of the adventures of Tintin, a young reporter created by Herge.
The work features a red dragon on a black background by the frightened character’s face. It never graced store shelves because it was deemed too expensive to reproduce on a wide scale, a victim of the artist’s craftsmanship.
In “Blue Lotus,” Tintin travels to China during the 1931 Japanese invasion with his dog, Snowy, to investigate and expose Japanese spy networks, drug-smuggling rings and other crimes.
The record price set at Thursday’s sale organized by the Artcurial auction house did not include auction fees. Work by Hergé, whose real name was Georges Remi, previously set the record for the most expensive pieces of comic book art with the front pages of Tintin comic books that also sold for 2.6 million euros, including auction fees.
As Dr Jill Biden acknowledged the fast-approaching inauguration, tweeting: “One week”, and began announcing her plans for her time in the White House, the current first lady Melania Trump has reportedly still not made any contact with her.
Dr Biden intends to continue her work on issues affecting military families. Ms Trump's plans for her post-White House life are unknown.
One of the grand traditions of the transition of power is when the President-elect and incoming first lady visit the White House in the period following the election to meet with the outgoing first family – this year, it is missing.
After a hard-fought election it is usually seen as a way of mending fences and fostering a sense of unity. It was a tradition honoured by the Obamas to the Trumps, but not one afforded by the latter to the Bidens.
CNN reports that on top of not making contact with Dr Biden, she has also not established an office to continue her “Be Best” initiative beyond her time in Washington.
For the first time, a senior Trump administration official who helped implement family separation has condemned the hardline immigration policy, which made it possible for the government to take more than 3,000 children, including infants, from their parents at the US-Mexico border in 2018.
In response to a damning report published on Thursday by the US justice department’s internal watchdog on the “zero-tolerance” policy, which made family separation possible, the former deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein (R-Myopic) said the policy “should have never been proposed or implemented”.
The justice department’s Office of Inspector General’s (OIG) long-awaited report said department leadership knew the policy would result in children being separated from their families and that the former US attorney general Jeff Sessions (R-Evil Elf) “demonstrated a deficient understanding of the legal requirements related to the care and custody of separated children”.
The OIG said justice department leadership “did not effectively coordinate” with the relevant agencies before implementing zero-tolerance, despite being aware of the challenges created by increasing prosecutions of adult asylum seekers under the policy.
Rosenstein, who publicly denounced the policy for the first time on Thursday, told the OIG he had known the zero-tolerance policy would result in family separations. He also told investigators he had not been involved with the formulation of the policy and had received reassurances about it that he now believed were wrong.
After a two-decade legal battle, more than 2,000 pieces found on a pair of early 19th-century shipwrecks are to be auctioned off, including a cannon used at Trafalgar and a letter seal belonging to Admiral Nelson.
The money raised at the auction will be split between the Uruguayan state and the heirs of the diver Héctor Bado, who led an effort in the 1990s to locate historical treasures from the HMS Agamemnon, once captained by Nelson, and the Spanish ship El Salvador.
The auction, to be held in Montevideo in May, is the result of a series of court decisions and an agreement between the government and the right-holders to the treasure, given that Uruguayan law previously allowed for private parties to seek and claim bounty from the sea floor.
The decision to auction off the troves from the historical ships has been criticised in both Uruguay and Spain. In an editorial, Spain’s ABC newspaper said when “treasure hunters reach an agreement with a government, society loses out as it watches historical heritage being lost”.
The Salvador, which sank in a storm in 1812 killing the crew of more than 500 men, has a trove including a vast range of personal objects and military equipment including artillery as the ship was carrying a complete detachment of cavalry soldiers when it went down.
With Covid-19 ripping through the United Kingdom, Brexit causing chaos, and support for Scottish independence growing, the British hardly need folkloric prophecies to tell them their country is in a tough spot. But 2021 has given them one anyway.
Legend has it that at least six ravens must be kept at the Tower of London or the kingdom will fall. On Wednesday it announced that one of these birds, Merlina, has gone missing and may be dead.
That means the tower's unkindness of ravens — the birds' suitably gothic collective noun — is down to seven, so perilously close to the minimum.
"My concern is obviously looking after the kingdom," Chris Skaife, ravenmaster at the Tower of London, told the BBC on Thursday. "Should the ravens leave the tower, a great harm will befall the kingdom, it will crumble into dust," he said, before clarifying with a chuckle, "Of course that's all myth and legend."
Six of the seven remaining ravens are named on the tower website: Jubilee, Harris, Gripp, Rocky, Erin and Poppy.
