Paul Krugman: There Will Be No Obamacare Replacement (NY Times Blog)
You may be surprised at the evident panic now seizing Republicans, who finally - thanks to James Comey and Vladimir Putin - are in a position to do what they always wanted, and kill Obamacare. How can it be that they're not ready with a replacement plan? That is, you may be surprised if you spent the entire Obama era paying no attention to the substantive policy issues - which is a pretty good description of the Republicans, now that you think about it.

Car 54, Where Are You? is an American sitcom that ran on NBC from 1961 to 1963, and was about two New York city police officers based at the fictional 53rd precinct in The Bronx. Car 54 was their patrol car. The show was filmed only in black-and-white. Episodes had different directors, the most recognized being Al De Caprio and Stanley Prager. Nat Hiken also directed several episodes. Filming was on location, and at Biograph Studios in The Bronx.
The series follows the adventures of New York Police Department officers Gunther Toody (badge #1432) (Joe E. Ross) and Francis Muldoon (badge #723) (Fred Gwynne), assigned to Patrol Car 54 in the fictional 53rd precinct of The Bronx. Toody was short, stocky, nosy, and not very bright and lived with his loud, domineering wife, Lucille (Beatrice Pons). Muldoon was very tall, quiet, and more intelligent. He was a shy bachelor who lived with his mother and two younger sisters, who often eschewed the notion of being married.

Top brass for Fender guitars gathered in New York City on Thursday to celebrate the launch of its new American Professional Series - a collection of revamped classic models.
According to Fender, the reimagined designs are replacing the American Standard this month as the renowned guitar manufacturer's flagship series.
The American Standard series launched in 1987 and has been the crown jewel of Fender's collections for nearly 30 years. Going forward, its availability will be limited.
The American Professional Series will make its official debut on January 19 in Anaheim, Calif.
Richard Carpenter, representing the singer-songwriting duo The Carpenters, claims that Universal Music Group and A&M Records have only paid him and the estate of his sister, Karen, only a "miniscule fraction" of digital royalties owed to them, according to a lawsuit he filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday.
The Carpenters contend that accountants they hired to examine the record label books found multiple errors and that the defendants rejected the claim of royalties. He is seeking compensatory damages of at least $2 million.
Among other things, according to the lawsuit, the record labels "improperly classified" revenue from digital downloads of Carpenters' music as sales of records as opposed to licensing revenue - short-changing them from a higher royalty rate. The lawsuit also claims that the defendants undercounted digital downloads and that they applied an incorrect base price to the sales of CDs.
The lawsuit notes that the lawsuit is similar to litigation involving the recordings of Eminem in which the defendants were several affiliates of UMG. Ultimately, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that digital downloads were a licensing of master recordings rather than a sale of records.
"I regret that I have been unable to amicably resolve this serious royalty dispute with Universal and A&M," Carpenter said in a statement. "The Carpenters recordings are among the best sellers in the history of popular music and after 48 years continue to contribute a substantial amount to UMG/A&M's annual bottom line. It seems only fair that these companies account fairly to my sister's estate and to me. I look forward to proving the allegations in court."
In a strange moment of startling symmetry with the current state of American politics, C-SPAN-the public affairs network that regularly broadcasts proceedings of the House of Representatives and Senate-was interrupted by a broadcast of Russia Today.
The state-funded Russian news network briefly took over the online feed of C-SPAN1, which had been broadcasting a discussion in Congress regarding the Securities and Exchange Commission Regulatory Accountability Act .
As Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., was speaking the feed suddenly cut from the House floor to a broadcast of RT. The feed cut in with a commercial break before returning to the RT news desk, where an anchor spoke of a suicide bombing.
Multiple C-SPAN watchers made mention of the sudden change on Twitter, including Deadspin editor Timothy Burke, who captured the moment the C-SPAN feed switched to RT.
The takeover reportedly lasted about 10 minutes before the C-SPAN feed returned. The interruption does not appear on the saved broadcast hosted on the network's website.

Lawmakers in Hawaii and several other states want to prevent presidential candidates from appearing on their states' ballots unless the candidates release their tax returns.
They're responding to President-elect Donald Trump's decision to not release his tax returns during the presidential campaign, breaking decades of precedent.
The Hawaii bill would require candidates to release five years of federal and state tax returns to qualify for the ballot, state Rep. Chris Lee said Wednesday. Similar proposals are circulating in California, Massachusetts, New Mexico and the District of Columbia.
"It's a reasonable step since every modern president has released their tax returns and put their assets into a blind trust to make sure the only interest they have is the interest of our country and its people," Lee said. "I think we're in a very dangerous climate in which that could change."
California state Sens. Scott Wiener and Mike McGuire are planning to introduce similar legislation, saying financial information should be made available to voters to build critical public trust.
A deluge of opposition from dozens of American Indian tribes, conservation groups and some scientists is tying up a decision on lifting protections for more than 700 grizzly bears in and around Yellowstone National park.
Officials had planned to finalize by the end of 2016 a proposal to turn management of grizzlies over to state officials and allow limited hunting.
But U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Assistant Regional Director Michael Thabault said it could take the agency another six months to finish reviewing 650,000 public comments that have poured in on the proposal.
Researchers tallied 106 Yellowstone-area grizzlies killed in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming during the past two years, often by wildlife managers following attacks on livestock and occasionally during run-ins with hunters.
That's the highest number of deaths in such a short time since the animal was listed as a threatened species in 1975. But Thabault said the death rate was sustainable given that the overall population has greatly expanded from 136 bears when protections were first imposed.

More than 100,000 people Wednesday signed an online petition against the handover of a flagship cathedral in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg to the Orthodox Church.
Local authorities in Russia's second city announced Tuesday night that Saint Isaac's Cathedral, which had been transformed into a museum in the Soviet era, would be returned to the powerful Orthodox Church.
The authors of the petition -- which was launched on change.org and addressed to President Vladimir Putin and Saint Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko -- fear the move could restrict tourists' access to a landmark of Russia's imperial capital and spell the end of the concerts that are staged there regularly.
Local media reported that 3.9 million tourists visited the cathedral last year, earning it more than 800 million rubles ($13.3 million).
Saint Isaac's, built by French architect Auguste Ricard de Montferrand between 1818 and 1858, was the Russian Empire's main cathedral.
A swampy forest in central Africa the size of England covers previously unknown carbon stocks equivalent to three years' worth of global CO2 emissions, scientists revealed Wednesday.
Draining these peatlands for agriculture, or reduced rainfall due to climate change, would release massive amounts of planet-warming greenhouse gases, they warned in a study published in Nature magazine.
"We found 30 billion tonnes of carbon that nobody knew was there," said Simon Lewis, co-lead author of the study and a professor at the University of Leeds.
"If the Congo Basin peatlands were to be destroyed, it would release billions of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere," he told AFP.
Most peat -- dense, dark-brown muck composed of decaying plants -- is located in Canada, Scandinavia and Siberia, but the tropics hold large stores as well.

A 2,400-year-old tomb filled with the skeletons of at least six people has been discovered in northern Iraq. Among the artifacts found in the tomb is a bracelet decorated with images of two snake heads peering at each other.
The tomb was constructed toward the end, or just after, the time of the Achaemenid Empire (550 to 330 B.C.), an empire in the Middle East that was conquered by Alexander the Great in a series of campaigns, according to the archaeologists, led by Michael Danti, a professor at Boston University. The excavation results were presented by Kyra Kaercher and Katie Downey, graduate students at the University of Pennsylvania and The Ohio State University, respectively, in November 2016 at the American Schools of Oriental Research's annual meeting.
It's difficult for archaeologists to tell exactly how many people were originally buried in the tomb, as some of the skeletons were found in a jumbled state. That disarray indicates that someone had entered, and possibly robbed, the tomb in ancient times, the researchers noted.
Inside the tomb, the archaeologists also found a pair of bronze earrings and the remains of at least 48 pottery vessels, five of which were still intact.
Swedish archaeologists have unearthed a dozen burial sites near the southern city of Aswan that date back almost 3,500 years to the New Kingdom era of ancient Egypt, the Antiquities Ministry said on Wednesday.
Human and animal remains were found in the cemeteries, which were discovered in the Gabal al-Silsila or Chain of Mountains area 65 km (40.3 miles) north of Aswan and would have been used during the reigns of pharaohs Thutmose III and Amenhotep II.
It is hoped the burial sites will help historians better understand ancient Egyptian healthcare and give a boost to Egypt's struggling tourism industry, which has been beset by political upheaval and militant attacks since the unseating of autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
Some of the cemeteries were for animals and contain one or two chambers with either stone or clay coffins, or ones made of cartonnage, Mahmoud Afify, the ministry's head of Ancient Egyptian Antiquities, said in a statement. Totems and scorpions were also found.
The expedition from Sweden's Lund University began in 2012. In 2015 it discovered the remains of an ancient temple also in Gabal al-Silsila.
Actor Tony Rosato, an alum of the sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live" and "SCTV," died on Tuesday night at his home in Toronto. He was 62.
The comedian died of a suspected heart attack, though an autopsy has not been performed yet, his agent Ryan Goldhar told Variety.
Rosato was born in Naples, Italy, in 1954. He joined the Canadian sketch comedy show "SCTV" ("Second City Television") in the late 1970s, playing, among other characters, drunk TV chef Marcello Sebastiani. The Toronto-based sketch show was created by Second City troupe members.
Rosato went on to join the cast of "SNL" in 1981, a year after producer Lorne Michaels took a break from the NBC show. Rosato was the first cast member born outside of the U.S. and one of only three "SCTV" alumni to appear on "SNL," along with Robin Duke and Martin Short. His tenure on the show lasted only one year (Season 6).
In the 1990s, he worked as a voice actor, playing the part of Luigi in a variety of Super Mario-related programs, in addition to other video games and animated series.
In 2005, Rosato was arrested and charged with criminal harassment of his wife. He believed his wife and daughter to be impostors and was diagnosed with Capgras delusion. He spent some time in a mental hospital before being released in 2009.
