Alot has been made of President Obama's stunning rise from the ashes during the recently completed lame-duck session of Congress, and with good reason.

My little neighborhood sandwich shop was invaded today by a horde of high school students from a school I'd never heard of. The students were more diverse than the neighborhood.

The world lost many of those who made it turn in 2010, many who inspired dread, angst, perplexity, obedience, imitation, laughter, and love. It's a time to celebrate their achievements, mourn their misfortunes, and marvel at a world that has such people in it.

Jim Hightower: RE-OPENING THE WALL STREET CASINO
Last year, Democrats claimed that the new financial reform law they passed had finally shut down the Wall Street casinos - those flim-flam houses of high finance that had wrecked our economy in 2007. But the new Republican majority in the house say they intend to undo the reforms this year.

Roger Ebert: The Best Animated Films of 2010
I found some good animated films in 2010, but I didn't find ten. And it's likely that only two of them are titles most moviegoers have had the chance to see. My list reflects a growing fact: Animation is no longer considered a form for children and families. In some cases it provides a way to tell stories hat can scarcely be imagined in live action.

New Question
The '2011 Crystal ball' Edition...
I read somewhere this past week that some manner of 'seer' has predicted that Michelle Obama will become pregnant this year. O-o-o-kay... Not sure how the Obamas feel about that, but I think it might give the White House a much needed PR boost... Anyway...
Anybody game to make some 2011 Predictions?

O'Really Interview
Obama
President Barack Obama will sit for an interview with Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly on Super Bowl Sunday.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest says it's in keeping with the president's custom of granting a pre-game interview to the network that is broadcasting the Super Bowl. Last year, it was with Katie Couric on CBS.
The White House clashed openly with Fox in the first year of Obama's administration, deriding it as aligned with the Republican Party. More recently tensions have subsided and Obama had a sit-down with Fox anchor Bret Baier last March.
The Super Bowl will be played in the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Sunday, Feb. 6. The interview will be taped at the White House.

Stanley Kramer Award
Sean Penn
Sean Penn is receiving an award from Hollywood producers honoring his efforts to explore social issues.
The Producers Guild of America will bestow its Stanley Kramer Award on Penn at the group's awards ceremony Jan. 22. The award is named for filmmaker Kramer, whose issue-oriented productions include "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and "The Defiant Ones."
Penn is the first individual to receive the Kramer Award. In the past, the award has been handed out for socially minded films such as "An Inconvenient Truth," "Hotel Rwanda" and Penn's own "I Am Sam."
Paula Wagner, chair of the Producers Guild Awards, says Penn is a committed activist who has "shed light on powerful stories, causes and individuals."

Karaoke Marathon
Bjork
Iceland's megastar Bjork launched a three-day karaoke marathon on Thursday with the aim of drawing attention to the protection of natural resources and her bid to stop the takeover of an energy firm, she told reporters.
The singer's karaoke marathon was set to go on from 3:00 pm (1500 GMT) to midnight (0000 GMT) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Bjork said she hoped the marathon would bring more people to sign a petition calling for a referendum on the ownership of natural resources.
Bjork has since July spearheaded a campaign to prevent the takeover of Icelandic energy group HS Orka from Canada's Magma Energy.

Heading Jury At Cannes
Robert De Niro
Robert De Niro will head the jury at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
The veteran American actor and director will lead a nine-member jury for the May 11-22 festival on the French Riviera.
De Niro's charisma may provide a Hollywood boost to Cannes. Last year's event was lighter than usual on star power and featured a lineup that left many critics unimpressed.

Hospital News
George Jones
Country Music Hall of Fame member George Jones is hospitalized in Nashville.
A statement from his publicist, Kirt Webster, says Jones went in for an annual checkup on Wednesday, and doctors required him to stay overnight to continue monitoring him.
The 79-year-old joked in the statement that he didn't want to drive back to his home just outside Nashville in cold weather so he decided to stay at the hospital.

Resigns From NPR
Ellen Weiss
A senior executive at National Public Radio who had a role in the firing of commentator Juan Williams has resigned.
NPR announced Thursday that Senior Vice-President for News Ellen Weiss has resigned, but gave no reason for that step.
NPR simultaneously announced the completion of a review of the October firing of Williams, who has since taken on a bigger role with the Fox News Channel. Based on the review, NPR's Board of Directors has recommended new internal procedures for personnel decisions and disciplinary action.
Williams was fired by NPR after saying on Fox that he gets nervous when he sees people on a plane with clothing that identifies them as Muslim. NPR said his remarks violated its standards of not having on-air personnel giving opinions.

Judge Dismisses Conviction
Howard K. Stern
A judge Thursday dismissed the drug conspiracy convictions of the late Anna Nicole Smith's boyfriend-lawyer Howard K. Stern and her psychiatrist, allowing only one conviction to remain against the physician and reducing it to a misdemeanor.
Superior Court Judge Robert Perry found that Stern never had the intent to defraud when he used his name and others to protect Smith's privacy when he obtained prescriptions for her.
Perry also found that psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich was acting out of concern for Smith and cited her long career and service to the community in deciding to sentence her to no more than one year of probation and a $100 fine for obtaining one Vicodin prescription under a false name.
Without Stern's participation, the judge said, there was no conspiracy between him and Eroshevich, and he dismissed those counts against her as well.

Suing EMI For Royalties
"Alvin and The Chipmunks"
Those adorable, annoying, uber-litigious Chipmunks are at it again.
Bagdasarian Prods, owner of the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" franchise, is suing EMI Music for allegedly failing to pay appropriate royalties on a boxed set of Chipmunks music featuring 24 songs.
The Chipmunks were created in 1958 by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr., and became an instant success -- perhaps the best-selling gimmick in entertainment history.
The franchise now resides with Ross Bagdasarian, Jr., who has not been afraid to sue his Hollywood partners. Last year, for instance, he filed a massive lawsuit against 20th Century Fox for half of the profits on "The Squeakquel," which grossed more than $200 million in theaters. (The dispute is still pending and was recently appealed up to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to determine whether it should be adjudicated in district court or by arbitration.)

Hacker Arrested
Miley Cyrus
Authorities say a man who bragged about hacking into Miley Cyrus' e-mail account and distributing revealing pictures of her has been arrested on unrelated charges.
According to federal court documents, 21-year-old Josh Holly was arrested Thursday in Nashville and charged with possession of unauthorized credit card account numbers. FBI agents had seized and searched his computer.
An FBI affidavit says Holly acknowledged hacking into Cyrus' MySpace account. He also bragged online and to the media about obtaining photos of Cyrus from her Gmail account. So far, he does not face charges relating to Cyrus.
Holly was released Monday. No phone listing could be found for him or a relative appointed as his custodian.

Santa Monica DUI
Jaime Pressly
Authorities in California say actress Jaime Pressly has been arrested in Santa Monica for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol. Lt. Darrell Lowe says the co-star of TV's "My Name is Earl" was stopped for a traffic violation around 11 p.m. Wednesday and booked on suspicion of DUI but he's not releasing any details.
Lowe says no traffic collision was involved.
Pressly's blood-alcohol level wasn't immediately released.
The Los Angeles County sheriff's website says the 33-year-old actress-model spent the night in jail and was released Thursday morning after posting $15,000 bail.

Extends Exhibition
German Historical Museum
A groundbreaking exhibition in Berlin tackling the personality cult of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler has been extended because of large numbers of visitors, organisers said Thursday.
"Hitler and the Germans" at Berlin's German Historical Museum (DHM) had been due to close on February 6 but will stay open another three weeks until February 27, spokesman Rudolf Trabold told AFP.
The exhibition, open since October, uses items ranging from propaganda posters, busts of Hitler, children's games and swastika Christmas decorations to show how Nazi imagery was present in almost every aspect of life.
These are juxtaposed with exhibits showing the sinister reality of life in the Third Reich behind the propaganda: the fate of Jews, political opponents or the mentally ill with no place in the Fuehrer's "Volk".

Campaign Keeps Work On Public Display
Pieter Brueghel (the Younger)
Arts organizations and public donations have raised enough money to keep one of Pieter Brueghel the Younger's finest paintings on public display in Britain, organizers of the campaign said on Thursday.
A grant of around one million pounds ($1.5 million) from the National Heritage Memorial Fund raised the total to the 2.7 million pounds needed to save "The Procession to Calvary" for the nation.
The work, completed in 1602, is one of the star attractions at Nostell Priory in Yorkshire, owned by the National Trust since 1954, where it has hung for over 200 years.
The Art Fund contributed 500,000 pounds, members of the public raised 680,000 pounds and various trusts and foundations brought in another 510,000 pounds.
