Paul Krugman: Disinformation on Inequality (New York Times)
In his piece [Bret] Stephens trashes Obama, accusing him of making a factual error when he did no such thing; then proceeds to commit just about every statistical sin you can imagine in an attempt to minimize the rise in inequality. In the process he leaves his readers more ignorant than they were before. When this is what passes for argument, how can we have any kind of rational discussion?
Lisa Skye, Paul Rasche: Where Aren't They Now? 16 Overlooked Deaths from 2013 (Cracked)
The new year is all about one thing: contemplating the creeping black hand of death that waits to claim us all. And while the rest of pop culture will spend the next week or so talking about the Nelson Mandelas and Paul Walkers of the world, every year we like to stop and remember those whose passing didn't make headlines, despite the fact that each changed your life in some small way.
Sweded Trailers for 2013's Biggest Blockbuster Films (Geeks of Doom)

Ian Johnston: Fast food is the 'unhealthy choice', McDonald's tells its own staff (Independent)
"Fast foods are quick, reasonably priced, and readily available alternatives to home cooking," a post on the site said, according to US business news channel CNBC. "While convenient and economical for a busy lifestyle, fast foods are typically high in calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar, and salt and may put people at risk for becoming overweight."
Hugh Malcolm Downs (born February 14, 1921) is a long-time American broadcaster, television host, news anchor, TV producer, author, game show host, and music composer. He is perhaps best known for his role as co-host of the NBC News program Today from 1962 to 1971, host of the Concentration game show from 1958 to 1969, and anchor of the ABC News magazine 20/20 from 1978 to 1999. In addition, he's served as announcer/sidekick for Tonight Starring Jack Paar, host of the PBS talk show Over Easy, and co-host of the syndicated talk show Not for Women Only.
In 1985, he was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as holding the record for the greatest number of hours on network commercial television (15,188 hours), though he lost the record for most hours on all forms of television to Regis Philbin in 2004.

Hugh Downs
Charlie said:
I guessed it was Hugh Downs.
Adam answered:
I think Philbin is paying Google not to divulge any previous results. So I'm going to say Betty White. After all, she was the very first woman to be on Television.

DJ Useo responded:
I was surprised yesterdays' trivia answer was Regis Philbin. I had no idea what the true answer was.
I gots no clue what todays answer is either, so I'll take a wild guess that it's Gordon Shumway, the alien nicknamed 'ALF' ( an acronym for Alien Life Form ).
Lois The Elderly Of Oregon replied:
This was a painful Trivia Question! Forcing people to
actually read almost an entire Wiki entry about Regis
Philbin only to discover the answer is Hugh Downs! 2014 is
getting off to a rough start, what with all this time spent
thinking of Regis. But it was worth it to learn fun facts
about Hugh Downs, like; he studied gerontology! I had to
look THAT one up too! A science devoted to the study of old
people. Why would a young man want to spend his time on
that? Maybe because back in the 40's and 50's, EVERYBODY
was old! Even the teenagers! Yes, look at photos from those
days. They ALL look so much older than their years! Probably
because of all the nuclear tests, like the ones that made
them giant ants and stuff that was running around out in the
deserts in those days. Anyway here is a picture of Hugh
Downs when he was a teenager, taggin' a wall, and smokin'
weed with sailors.
@Sally; you got my vote! You're grand in my book. Hope those
kids appreciate how lucky they are.
@BttbB; LOL! Yes, all of them!
Sally said:
Boy, I just don't know which performer held the record for most time spent in front of a television camera, from 1985 to 2004.
I tried to look it up, with no luck, and really don't have much time to look more today.
Big storm coming in...
This is what the media would have us believe is coming...
I went grocery shopping after the kids left because it is my regular shopping day. I tell you, EVERYONE and their uncle were out shopping before 9 AM! The minute the media says the word, SNOW, the mid-Atlantic people freak! They were shopping as if they will not be able to get to a store for months!
Bet half if it ends up being tossed out after the fact!!
PS: My little care kid John, hopes it, "Snows up to the roof" overnight, so if I'm not here tomorrow, you will know his wish came true...
Dale of Dry Diamond Springs, Norcali, answered:
Hugh Downs who had 10,511 hours in 1997. Wow, that's an oldie! Wow, he even sang! Whaddya think, Hugh and Babs? Fidel? Senator Brooke? Pee-Wee, Yeah!
BttbBob replied:
Who what? WHO WHAT?
AAAAAAAAAAAA-H-H-H-H-H!!!!!

Well, this looks like a real tuffy, let's fire up old Fred and see what he has to say. What? Wait a minute! Fred's not working. Oh wait, I see the problem, no bars and the battery is almost gone. Gotta recharge.
In the meantime on to other more pressing issues. Lois, in case you were wondering what Sally and I had to say when discussing you, we felt you fit in here very nicely. And because of that, just for you, NAKED MONKEES!
I know, I know. They're naked monkeys and not what you wanted, but there are no pictures of naked Monkees out there because no one wants to see them. But here, just for you are pictures of scantily clad men, not naked, but very attractive. They aren't naked because they are all Native American men, the best looking men in the world, but very modest. I'm sure others will enjoy these pictures as well. Sally, MAM?
Ok, the first three are Adam Beach because he's so cool and he looks a lot like me. The last picture is me, many years and miles ago in South Dakota. You're welcome.

Bill Nye "The Science Guy" is set to visit Kentucky next month for a debate on science and creation with the man who founded the Creation Museum.
Founder Ken Ham wrote on his Facebook page that the museum will host Nye, the former host of a popular youth science show, on Feb. 4.
Nye has been critical of creationists for their opposition to evolution and asserting that the Old Testament is a literal account of the earth's beginnings. Last year in an online video that drew nearly 6 million views, Nye said teaching creationism was bad for children.
The event will be titled "Is Creation A Viable Model of Origins?" The museum is planning to charge admission.

"I am sorry Daniel Clowes," read a message in the Los Angeles sky on New Year's day that was apparently commissioned by Shia LaBeouf, who posted a photo of the writing on his @thecampaignbook Twitter feed.
The actor has been tweeting for several days to express his remorse for closely copying the comic "Justin M. Damiano," by graphic novelist Daniel Clowes, in his short film "Howard Cantour." "Ghost World" author Clowes lives in the San Francisco Bay area.
The skywriting was visible across several parts of Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon, including Hollywood, Glendale and Studio City. A company called Worldwide Sky Ads tweeted that their team the Skywriters was responsible for the message.
On New Year's Eve, La Beouf tweeted that his resolution is to "work on being a less controversial tweeter." But it's hard not to view the whole thing as an elaborate art project, since many of the tweets he sent in apology were themselves lines from other works.
A "Breaking Bad" fan in Florida, who watched the series finale of the AMC meth drama with the show's cast after winning a contest, has been arrested after perhaps mimicking the show's characters a bit too much, Florida television station WPTV reports.
Ryan Lee Carroll, who attended a Los Angeles screening of the "Breaking Bad" finale in September at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, won a contest sponsored by series star Aaron Paul. He was arrested Wednesday and charged with multiple drug charges.
Carroll, 28, has been charged with possession of a synthetic narcotic and possession of a controlled substance, both felonies, along with a misdemeanor charge of keeping a shop or vehicle for dangerous drugs. He was arrested after authorities began investigating the San Carlos Park, Fla., residence Carroll is renting.
Prior to attending the screening, Carroll enthused about the show with a drug-laced reference that perhaps, considering recent events, has taken on an added layer of relevance.
"If you start watching it, you can't stop," Carroll told Naples News. "It's highly addicting, just like the meth they make (on the show)."

A mission to put humans on Mars that drew 200,000 applicants has selected more than a thousand candidates who will now be tested to come up with a final list of 24 would-be Mars-dwellers.
Mars One was set up in 2011 by two Dutch men with the goal of establishing permanent human life on Mars in 2025. They hope the project will be funded by investors and the rights from the documentary-cum-reality TV broadcasting of the tests, training and final selection.
The 1,058 candidates who got through to the first round come from all over the world. By far the largest number - 297 - are American, followed by 75 Canadians and 62 Indians.
They must now undergo rigorous tests, including simulations of life on Mars and coping with isolation, co-founder Bas Lansdorp said.
A lawyer who blew JK Rowling's cover when she wrote a detective novel under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith has been fined 1,000 pounds ($1,650) and received a written warning from a British legal watchdog.
Chris Gossage, a partner at Russells Solicitors, which represented the Harry Potter author, leaked one of the publishing world's biggest secrets to his wife's best friend - who then tweeted Galbraith's real identity to a journalist.
Rowling, Britain's best-selling author, was furious when she found out that a partner at her London-based law firm had revealed she was the author of "The Cuckoo's Calling".
After taking legal action against Gossage and his friend Judith Callegari, Rowling accepted an apology from the law firm which paid her legal costs and made a substantial, undisclosed donation to a charity of her choice, the Soldiers' Charity.

More than 6.6 million people attended events with Pope Francis at the Vatican from his election in March to the end of 2013, figures released on Thursday showed, compared to 2.3 million for former Pope Benedict in all of 2012.
The Vatican said the figures were based on the number of tickets issued for papal events where they are needed, such as general audiences, Masses and private audiences.
They were also based on estimates of the number of people at events where tickets are not needed, such as his weekly appearance from a window overlooking St. Peter's Square.
The Vatican did not issue comparative figures on Thursday but figures released on January 4, 2013 showed that some 2.3 million people attended all events presided by Benedict in 2012.

The tiny Chinese city of Macau has again smashed its annual record for casino earnings as revenues last year hit a staggering $45 billion, further underlining its outsize position as the world's biggest gambling market.
Gambling regulator data released Thursday showed that Macau's three dozen casinos raked in 33.5 billion patacas ($4.2 billion) in December. That brought revenue for 2013 to 360.8 billion patacas ($45 billion), up 18.6 percent from the year before.
Analyst Grant Govertsen of Union Gaming Research estimated that Macau's take would be more than seven times the amount earned on the Las Vegas Strip.
The former Portuguese colony's once-lethargic casino market has thrived since the government ended a gambling monopoly a decade ago and let in foreign players such as Las Vegas Sands Corp. and Wynn Resorts Ltd.
All six casino operators in Macau, an hour by high-speed ferry from Hong Kong, are pouring billions into new megaprojects in the district in a fresh round of expansion.

Two Utah paintings by the mysterious British graffiti artist Banksy were the targets of vandalism on New Year's Eve, possibly ruining one of the works in the town that hosts the Sundance Film Festival.
Brown spray paint Thursday covered a Park City mural that depicted a young boy with a pink halo and angel wings kneeling to pray behind a can of pink paint. The clear protective covering over the image had been shattered.
The second piece, of a cameraman stooped to shoot video footage of a flower, was not defaced, but the covering had been cracked.
The murals have become local points of pride since they appeared three years ago, and Park City police said they don't have a motive for the crime.
Surveillance footage captured a lone white male suspect tampering with the art about 2 a.m. Tuesday, and authorities expect to release images of the man Friday to aid their search, according to police Sgt. Jay Randall.

The New York Times and Guardian newspapers have called for clemency for Edward Snowden, saying that the espionage worker-turned-privacy advocate should be praised rather than punished for his disclosures.
The papers - both of which have played a role in publishing Snowden's intelligence trove - suggested late Wednesday that the former National Security Agency contractor's revelations about the United States' world-spanning espionage program were of such public importance that they outweighed any possible wrongdoing.
"Considering the enormous value of the information he has revealed, and the abuses he has exposed, Mr. Snowden deserves better than a life of permanent exile, fear and flight," the Times said, calling either for a plea bargain, some form of clemency, or a "substantially reduced punishment."
The Guardian said it hoped "calm heads within the present (U.S.) administration are working on a strategy to allow Mr. Snowden to return to the U.S. with dignity, and the president to use his executive powers to treat him humanely and in a manner that would be a shining example about the value of whistleblowers and of free speech itself."
Both newspapers published their editorials online within a few hours of one another, but Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger said the papers' appeals weren't coordinated ahead of time.
Longtime conservative New York radio host Bob Grant (R-Racist) has finally died at age 84.
His death Tuesday in Hillsborough, N.J., after a short illness was confirmed by New York radio station WABC.
Grant once derided Martin Luther King Jr. as "that slimeball." He was fired from WABC in 1996 for acid-tongued remarks he made following the plane crash death of the first black U.S. commerce secretary, Ron Brown. He later returned to WABC.
Grant was born Robert Ciro Gigante in Chicago in 1929. He began his broadcasting career in the late 1940s at WBBM in Chicago. He moved on to radio and TV jobs in Los Angeles and New York and was named afternoon drive time host at WABC in 1984.
