Re: Fly Speck
I've seen the ad at least ten times and still can't believe they did not special effect it out. Although, maybe they were looking for reality to show just how well their plasma TV operates.

If it's time to buy Christmas presents again, then it's time for a new Bushgnome. It was in 2004, during the presidential election campaign, when Athens resident Sam Girton first began selling his small garden gnomes that look like President George W. Bush. The Bushgnomes proved quite popular during the election season and as Christmas gifts, and Girton sold them around the country.

Since Sliced Bread is a national call for fresh, common sense ideas. A call for ideas that will strengthen our economy and improve the day-to-day lives of working men and women and their families. It's also a place where ordinary Americans and experts alike can discuss the important economic issues of our times.

In 1940, children's book author/illustrator Tomie dePaola was in Mrs. Kiniry's first-grade class. Each day, Mrs. Kiniry read the names of all the children who had brought in their dime for their milk that week, and each day Mrs. Kiniry read the names of all the children in the class. (Actually, not all the children had a dime for their milk, and Mr. dePaola discovered later that Mrs. Kiniry used her own money to pay for the milk so that everyone could have milk and no one would be embarrassed because their name was not read.)

Re: Bushtard
That poster the Bushtard was holding personifies the intellectual and moral bankruptcy of wingnuts everywhere.
I wonder just how many people were rallying in favor of Prince Fuckwit. 10? 20?
They're too stupid to realize that they are a rapidly shrinking minority in this country.
Oh - and that fat pig with the poster? Why isn't he in EYE-rack since he thinks his preznit's war is so wonderful?

My thought was the poster presented a whole new take on mounting a turkey.
Maybe Scooter Libby could use the concept for a sequel to 'The Apprentice'.

Last Night
Still sunny, clear & cold (for these parts).
Went to turn on the heater in the living room, but was unsuccessful. We have a floor heater and use a key to turn a little post to fire it up, but the little post-thingy won't turn.
Last summer the plumber was here fixing the kitchen plumbing and said he smelled gas while walking through the house, which led to an inspection of the heater.
Turned out there was a hole in the little pipe that feeds the gas into the burner, which he replaced & we felt very grateful.
Since prior experience has taught me to be picky about the plumber, we have to wait until Friday for the 'good' one.

Star Stolen From Walk of Fame
Gregory Peck
Someone has walked off with Gregory Peck at the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Thieves armed with a concrete saw cut through terrazzo and cement to hoist out the pink, five-pointed star that frames a movie camera emblem and the late actor's brass name, authorities in Hollywood said today.
"It happened just before Sunday's Hollywood Christmas Parade. We have no idea where it is," said Johnny Grant, who serves as Hollywood's honorary mayor and oversees the chamber's sidewalk salute to celebrity.
Peck's star, at 6100 Hollywood Boulevard near Gower Street, is the fourth star to be stolen since the Walk of Fame was begun in 1960 with the placement of actress Joanne Woodward's star. Some 2,200 stars are now showcased along the walkway.

Iraq No Better Off
Ted Turner
Media mogul Ted Turner said Monday that Iraq is no better off following the U.S.-led invasion that ousted dictator Saddam Hussein than it was before the war.
The philanthropist and founder of CNN also said the United States and Russia still have thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at each other on a "hair trigger," and he was afraid someone could make the mistake to launch them, including resident Bush.
"You have to question ... the president on a lot of decisions he's made," Turner said in a lecture at Kansas State University. "He might just think launching those weapons would be a good thing to do. ... He thought Iraq was."

It will be the first performance by the popular folk trio, which also includes Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey, since Travers was diagnosed a year ago.
She has been making a steady recovery since a bone marrow transplant was performed in April. Doctors have told her that tests so far show no signs of the disease.
Travers said she doesn't know her donor yet, but hopes to meet the person someday. "My donor has a lifetime of free concerts to Peter, Paul and Mary," she said.

"I'm sure Kenny (Goss) and I will be doing the old legal thing, but we won't be doing the whole veil and gown thing," Michael said at a screening of a documentary about his career. "It'll be relatively soon after it comes in, probably early next year."
The singer said he and Goss, who have been a couple for nearly ten years, planned a "small, private ceremony."

Spelling and his wife, Candy Spelling, filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court last week against Charlene Richards and her attorney, Don D. Sessions.

Wants Big Brother Butting Out
TV Viewers
Americans overwhelmingly want Big Brother to butt out of their TV watching, according to a new study of U.S. viewing habits set for release Tuesday.
According to the survey done this month by Russell Research for TV Watch, 81% of American TV watchers worry about the kinds of programs their children could be exposed to, and 91% of parents said more parental involvement is the best way to keep kids from seeing what they shouldn't see. Just 9% of parents said the government should increase control and enforcement of network television programming.

Opposed Screen Version Of "Narnia"
CS Lewis
A letter from C.S. Lewis, posted on the literary Web site Nthposition.com, revealed that he had strong feelings about how his book should be used.
"I am absolutely opposed -- adamant isn't in it! -- to a TV version," he wrote to BBC producer Lance Sieveking, who had created a radio version of his book which had met Lewis' approval.
"Anthropomorphic animals, when taken out of narrative into actual visibility, always turn into buffoonery or nightmare -- at least with photography," he wrote.
"Cartoons (if only Disney did not combine so much vulgarity with his genius!) would be another matter. A human, pantomime, Aslan would be, to me, blasphemy."

Working Rural Australia
Old Prostitutes
Prostitutes as old as 70 continue to work in rural Australia, pushed out of the cities due to strong competition from younger and more attractive sex workers, the author of a study said on Tuesday.
The research, by John Scott of the University of New England, examined prostitution in rural areas of New South Wales state. He found the sex industry has flourished in rural towns, with many prostitutes making regular visits.
He said a sex worker might pass through a country town every couple of months, but would advertise in advance and book up appointments. He said sex workers in rural areas tended to be older, and provide more companionship than city sex workers.

U.S. Troops Rescue
Cheetah Cubs
U.S. troops flew two endangered cheetah cubs to the Ethiopian capital Tuesday after instigating their rescue from a remote village where a restaurant owner had held them captive and abused them.
The male and female cubs - whom the soldiers named Scout and Patch - were released on the grounds of the Ethiopian president's official residence after their 680-mile journey from the eastern hamlet of Gode.
The saga of the cubs started last month when U.S. counterterrorism troops, carrying out humanitarian work in the Gode region, discovered the animals' owner was keeping them tied up with ropes around their necks at his restaurant and forcing them to fight each other for the amusement of patrons and village children. One cub is blind in one eye.
The cubs will now live at the National Palace, home to President Girma Woldegirogis, along with three rescued lions and some vervet monkeys.

Renews Disney Film Deal
Jerry Bruckheimer
The Walt Disney Co. has extended its long-term relationship with "Pirates of the Caribbean" producer Jerry Bruckheimer in a deal that gives the studio the first look at the hit maker's new projects, representatives for both parties said on Tuesday.
The new pact runs until September 30, 2007 and is retroactive to films he made after September of 2002, including "Pirates," "National Treasure," starring Nicolas Cage, and "King Arthur," starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley.
The new agreement, like the pact it replaces, calls for Bruckheimer to develop films exclusively for Disney but allows him to take projects elsewhere if the studio passes on them.
