Timothy Dodson: When the votes don't add up
What would it do to Americans' image of themselves, their country and their democracy if it turned out that a presidential election had been stolen? That's the question Mark Crispin Miller, author of The Bush Dyslexicon, challenges Americans to ask themselves in his latest book, Fooled Again: How the Right Stole the 2004 Election & Why They'll Steal the Next One Too (Unless We Stop Them).
Human Rights Watch: Torture in Iraq (nybooks.com)
Residents of Fallujah called them "the Murderous Maniacs" because of how they treated Iraqis in detention. They were soldiers of the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, stationed at Forward Operating Base Mercury (FOB Mercury) in Iraq. The soldiers considered this name a badge of honor.
Bill Gallagher: OUR SOLDIERS JUST PROPS FOR BUSH (niagarafallsreporter.com)
Built on the rotten wood of lies, the staging is collapsing. The once-eager actors in the media are refusing to follow the script. The American people, so thoroughly choreographed for years, are now scooting away from the deceptive dance steps they followed for far too long. George W. Bush's political theater is a flop.
Andrew Hacker: The Truth About the Colleges
Higher education in America is no longer the preserve of a privileged elite, with more than seven million undergraduates now enrolled in the roughly 2,600 colleges and universities that grant bachelor or higher degrees. In 2002, the most recent year for which figures are available, 1,291,900 students received bachelors' diplomas and 606,958 completed graduate programs. The latter figure is worth noting, since it tells us that almost half of those who are completing college believe that a single degree won't suffice for what they want to do or be.
ROGER EBERT: Bai Ling: Slice, dice, smile
"But there is a whole feature film named 'Dumplings!' I won the Golden Horse for it! That is Chinese Oscar! You only saw excerpt! Whole film has lovemaking scene so passionate, so powerful!"
Pope Benedict XVI just announced yesterday, publicly at a mass, the canonization of 5 new SAINTS……privately he pronounced a 6th new SAINT…… "Saint Angelina"….It turns out that the newly ordained Pope had gotten a chance to see Angelina Jolie in the movie "Beyond Borders" in a sneak showing in the catacombs at the Vatican in Rome….and he thought that the movie was a "Documentary" !!!!!!!! Well he first proclaimed her a "Martyr" and then, after viewing "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" he declared sainthood! When I heard this pronouncement, I immediately went out and watched "Beyond Borders" !!!!
Before viewing the movie, I did a little research on Angelina Jolie Voight …she was born in 1975 (Czech/Iroquios/French) (Dad is Jon Voight-estranged)….pre-sainthood stuff…..She was in a movie with her dad at 7 years old…..made "Hackers" (1995)…"Gia" (1998)…"Pushing Tin" (1999)…where she met a devil of a man named Billy Bob..and married him….."Girl, Interrupted" (1999) and then she made "Original Sin" (2001)……She divorced Billy Bob and became "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" and then onto her saintly role of Sarah Jordan in "Beyond Borders" (2003)…she was voted People Magazine's "Most Beautiful Woman", VHI'S # 2 "Hottie", Stuff Magazine's # 6 "Sexiest Woman in the World", nominated for 4 "Razzie" awards ….Purple Gene's "Sexiest non-Botoxed Lips in the Universe" (1999) and was # 2 on Mr. Blackwell's "Worst Dressed List"!!!!! At the same time she was in Cambodia adopting "Maddox Chivon Thornton Jolie" and in Ethiopia adopting "Zahara Marley Jolie"….in 2003 was named the first "Citizen of the World" and United Nations "Good Will Ambassador" and now …."Saint Angelina" !!!!!!!!
It's easy to see why the Pope canonized her after seeing "Beyond Borders" …..
Sarah Jordan is an English society maven …married properly and involved in shopping and showing up at fund raising events……like Paris Hilton….she attends one of these "People starving in Africa" $500 a plate extravaganza's when the stuffy speechmaking is interrupted by a crazed social worker named Nick Callahan (Clive Owen - "Vroom" (1988) - "The Hire: Star" (2001) - "Sin City" (2005) carrying a half naked and starving Ethiopian child and he chastises the whole group for not giving enough..…..Well Sarah is smitten and decides to leave her husband and chase Nick around the world in her white pants suit and perfume to help save the starving masses…..Ethiopia, Cambodia, Chechnya…..of course they fall in love and then he disappears (and she is pregnant)….Well the chase is on as Sarah must save Nick from certain death in another war torn hell hole….Will she ever see him again? Will she get to tell him he's a daddy? Will they live happily ever after???????
Well..in real life, while making "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" (2005), St. Angelina fell in love with Brad Pitt and now he is her full time baby sitter…. while she continues to circle the globe and save the world ………………………………
Purple Gene give "Beyond Borders" 1 heavenly halo out of 10 for being so "un-holier than thou" hopelessly phony !!
Today is the kid's birthday and tomorrow we'll have a functioning ant farm.

The archives of Stanley Kubrick - one of the most comprehensive collections of film production materials in the world - will be housed at a London arts school from the summer of 2006.
Boxes of scripts, research documents, correspondence, costumes, props, models and film equipment will be displayed at the University of the Arts' London College of Communication for public viewing and student research, the college announced Monday.
The university will construct a center for archives and special collections on the LCC campus in south London to house Kubrick's material.
His family will own the archives but the school will be responsible for the upkeep.
The annual worldwide press freedom index from Reporters Without Borders shows the United States, which is supposedly spreading freedom and liberty throughout the world, is in a fast decline regarding the freedom of its own press.
The report ranked the United States in 44th place, an atomic drop from a favorable position of 22nd held last year, and from a handsome 17th place in 2002.
South Korea, positioned at 34th place, is improving its image, partly because of open-source media OhmyNews. Any citizen in South Korea can be a reporter, thanks to its policy of posting submissions from people with all backgrounds.

From New York's Times Square to a lawn outside an old government building in Hawaii, American anti-war activists prepared to mark the 2,000th U.S. military death in Iraq with prayer, candlelight and protest.

In the middle of a Tuesday conference call announcing Infinity Broadcasting's plans to replace Howard Stern, a familiar voice appeared: Beetlejuice, the diminutive, snaggle-toothed fixture from the shock jock's nationally syndicated morning show.
He was quickly cut off, leaving Infinity Broadcasting Corp.'s chairman and CEO Joel Hollander to explain how the prank only demonstrated the significance of the company's plans for a post-Stern existence - a radio world where rocker David Lee Roth and comedian Adam Carolla will take over 12 of Stern's 27 Infinity markets.
Infinity developed 10 replacement scenarios, from celebrities to sports talk to the DJ-free "Jack" format. Flamboyant former Van Halen frontman Roth debuts Jan. 3 on seven of its stations; the flagship WXRK-FM in New York, WBCN-FM in Boston, WYSP-FM in Philadelphia, WRKZ-FM in Pittsburgh, WNCX-FM in Cleveland, WPBZ-FM in West Palm Beach, Fla., and KLLI-FM in Dallas.
Roth appeared live on Stern's show before the conference call, and the shock jock wished his successor well. It's Roth's first gig as a radio host.
Corporate directors must rein in soaring U.S. executive pay or face the prospect of government regulation, said the judge who presided over a landmark pay case involving entertainment group Disney Co. on Tuesday.
Delaware Chancery Court Judge William Chandler -- who let Disney directors off the hook in August for Michael Ovitz's huge $140 million 1996 payoff after a brief failed term as Disney president -- warned in a speech to a directors' group that regulation would be a "blunt instrument."
"If neither the courts nor the markets are able to restrain executive compensation, and if you the decision-makers fail ... the result will be imposition of regulatory controls," said Chandler, whose court handles many important business cases.

Sci Fi Channel has ordered new seasons of the original series "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate Atlantis." Production on 20 new episodes each begins early next year in anticipation of premiering next summer. Heading into its 10th season, "SG-1" is now the longest-running sci-fi drama ever made for U.S. television; "Atlantis" is heading into its third season.
The filmmakers of "Left Behind: World at War" figured a little preaching to the choir would help market the Christian-themed thriller.
They preceded the movie's DVD release Tuesday with screenings at about 3,200 churches across the United States and Canada, hoping to build word-of-mouth for the straight-to-video sequel in Kirk Cameron's series of films about Armageddon.
Adapted from the "Left Behind" book series, the movies star Cameron, best known for the TV sitcom "Growing Pains," as a reporter investigating the rise to power of an anti-Christ figure and the coming battle between good and evil prophesied in the Bible. The latest movie co-stars Lou Gossett Jr. as the U.S. president.

Tonya Harding tussled in her home with a man she described as her boyfriend, prompting an emergency call by the figure skater-turned-boxer and an arrest of the man.
Christopher Nolan was charged with assault and pleaded not guilty Monday. He told deputies Harding threw him down and bit his finger when he said she had too much to drink on Sunday. The 27-year-old Nolan was ordered to stay away from Harding and to avoid alcohol.
Initially, Harding called 911 and said she was attacked by two masked men who came to her home and assaulted her before she could escape.
A man dressed as the Muppet Elmo was one of three impersonators arrested last week for allegedly harassing tourists for tips after posing for photos on Hollywood Boulevard. Booked with him were people impersonating superhero Mr. Incredible and the dark-hooded character from the horror movie "Scream."
The impersonators said they were taken into custody at gunpoint, handcuffed and paraded on the Hollywood Walk of Fame before stunned tourists and other impersonators. They were charged with misdemeanor "aggressive begging," police said.
Los Angeles Police Officer Michael Shea said police warned impersonators at a meeting last month that the department would start enforcing solicitation and harassment laws. Officers conducted a sting operation by posing as French tourists who didn't understand English or the American tipping culture.

A weeklong festival will be held to celebrate the unveiling of a statue of Bruce Lee on Hong Kong's Avenue of Stars.
Lee's brother Robert Lee will preside over the Nov. 27 ceremony, Wong Yiu-keung, chairman of the Hong Kong-based Bruce Lee Club, said Monday.
The 6-foot-6-inch statue will feature the martial arts star with his torso bared and his hands spread in a fighting stance. The pose was selected in an online poll of Lee's fans.
The Nov. 25-Dec. 1 festival, backed by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, also will include a fan gathering, tours of Lee-related sites and free showings of his movies at the Avenue of Stars, Hong Kong's equivalent of Hollywood's Walk of Fame, Wong said.

The 43-year-old rocker known for his over-the-top antics hit a parked vehicle Aug. 24 while he was backing out of the driveway of his girlfriend's home, prosecutors said. He allegedly rammed another parked car, deploying his vehicle's air bags and injuring his girlfriend.
