Andrew Tobias: CULTURE OF CORRUPTION (andrewtobias.com) - (Oct. 10)
The New York Times has begun charging for on-line access to its superb columnists, but it doesn't charge much - nothing, if you subscribe to the print edition - and maybe the New York Times is worth supporting with a few bucks now and then, just as NPR and McDonald's are (don't tell me you've never tossed a few coins into McDonald's' coffer). I just now caught up with Frank Rich's column from October 2. In part: . . . It's not just Mr. DeLay, aka the Hammer, who is on life support, but a Washington establishment whose infatuation with power and money has contaminated nearly every limb of government and turned off a public that by two to one finds the country on the wrong track.
Dave Zirin: Pat Tillman, Our Hero (thenation.com)
"I don't believe it," seethed Ann Coulter. Her contempt was directed at a September 25 San Francisco Chronicle story reporting that former NFL star and Army Ranger war hero Pat Tillman, who was killed in Afghanistan last year, believed the US war on Iraq was "f***ing illegal" and counted Noam Chomsky among his favorite authors.
Rachel Kramer Bussel: Four Fetish Fanatics: Clowns, feet, cigarettes, and latex are fair game for fetishists (villagevoice.com)
The one porn video I own that always gets a comment, and usually an incredulous stare, is The Sex Lives of Clowns. "What?" people ask, followed by "Why do you have that?" As to the latter-it was in the bargain bin at Hustler Hollywood once, and I was curious.
Roger Ebert: The Dead (1987) (A Great Movie)
John Huston was dying when he directed "The Dead." Tethered to an oxygen tank, hunched in a wheelchair, weak with emphysema and heart disease, he was a perfectionist attentive to the slightest nuance of the filming. James Joyce's story, for that matter is all nuance until the final pages. It leads by subtle signs to a great outpouring of grief and love, but until then, as Huston observed, "The biggest piece of action is trying to pass the port."
Why Not to Send a Comedian Hate Mail (villagevoice.com)
I don't know why people write strangers to tell them they suck (unless they are unattractive or have an accent.) I hate lots of stuff, but mostly, I just avoid it. As do you. Because we're not crazy-other than OCD, depression, alcoholism, crippling neuroticism, and a spirit-crushing emotional unavailability. But we don't seek out ways to be mean to people.

Last Night
Sunny and a bit cooler than seasonal.
Ran by Toys R Us. There was only 1 other customer in the store, which helped explain the empty parking lot.
Dave Letterman had footage from today's latest photo op in Louisiana where we saw Pickles husband has never used a hammer or driven a nail before.
Local news keeps calling Ahnold's photo ops 'town meetings' even though they are by invitation only. Maybe it's the Austrian definition.
First Annual
Quills Awards
J.K. Rowling, Jon Stewart and Stephen King were among the winners Tuesday night of the first annual Quills Awards, people's choice book prizes better known so far to the industry than to the public.
Other winners included Sue Monk Kidd's "The Mermaid Chair" for general fiction and David McCullough's "1776" for history/current events/politics.
The Quills include 19 categories, ranging from history and general fiction to sports, cooking and business. In monthlong voting that ended Sept. 19, fans picked their favorites by visiting the Quills Web site, quillsvote.com, and filling out e-ballots.
The winners were revealed at a black-tie ceremony hosted by NBC news anchor Brian Williams and featuring Stewart, Kim Cattrall and Robert Klein. Martha Stewart had been also been expected, but canceled at the last minute, citing a scheduling conflict, Quills officials said. An edited version of the ceremony will air Oct. 22. Fourteen NBC stations have committed to televising it.

Pleads No Contest to DUI
Stockard Channing
Actress Stockard Channing pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge stemming from an incident last year on the Hollywood Freeway.
Channing, 61, who won an Emmy for her role as the first lady on NBC's "The West Wing," was ordered to pay a $390 fine and take part in an alcohol education program after pleading no contest Thursday, said Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the city attorney's office. She was also placed on 36 months of probation, Mateljan said.
The actress was arrested Dec. 14 after allegedly trying to drive around a roadblock set up so a tow truck could removed a disabled tractor-trailer.

Honorary Kidney Chairmen
Ann & George Lopez
George Lopez and his wife, Ann, who donated a kidney to the actor-comedian earlier this year, have been named honorary chairmen for the National Kidney Foundation.
Lopez, star of the ABC comedy "George Lopez," has a genetic condition that caused his kidneys to deteriorate. He had transplant surgery in April.
The couple will be honorary chairmen of the foundation's Kidney Walk Program, a series of nearly 100 walks held every year in cities across the country.

Unveils More Useless Full-Color, Larger Format
TV Guide
TV Guide released its first issue in a full-color, larger format Tuesday, part of an overall revamp aimed at trying to keep the 52-year-old magazine relevant in an age of on-screen television guides.
The new issue features Ty Pennington of "Extreme Home Makeover: Home Edition" on its cover, as well as a new makeup that emphasizes stories, columns and gossip about TV shows over TV listings.
As part of the makeover, TV Guide's publisher, Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc., is also slashing the circulation it guarantees advertisers by nearly two-thirds, from 9 million to 3.2 million.
The magazine will maintain its weekly publication schedule, but its cover price will drop to $1.99 from $2.49 for the famliar digest-size format. Until the end of the year, though, the price wil be reduced to 99 cents.

Gets Hollywood Walk O'Fame Star
Rod Stewart
Rod Stewart was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday in front of a crowd of screaming fans.
"I have never had such a nervous day in my life," said the tanned and svelte Stewart, 60, who is facing fatherhood anew.
Flanked by his pregnant fiancee Penny Lancaster, Stewart danced a jig atop his sidewalk star on Hollywood Boulevard.
Born in London, he initially pursued a career as a professional soccer player and also worked as a gravedigger.

Three Volcanoes Showing Signs Of Unrest
Alaska
Anchorage residents could see a cloud of steam over the weekend from a volcano 900 miles away -- one of three Alaska volcanoes showing signs of unrest.
The three volcanoes, including two located on remote Aleutian islands distant from any population centers, are setting off frequent tremors and minor bursts of ash or steam, seismologists said on Tuesday.
Cleveland Volcano, 900 miles southwest of Anchorage, had a small eruption on Friday, said the Alaska Volcano Observatory, which monitors Alaska's more than 40 active volcanoes.
Its ash plume rose to a height of nearly 15,000 feet (4.6 km) above sea level, observatory scientists said.
