One of the more bizarre aspects of the Iraq war has been President Bush's repeated insistence that his generals tell him they have enough troops. Even more bizarrely, it may be true - I mean, that his generals tell him that they have enough troops, not that they actually have enough. An article in yesterday's Baltimore Sun explains why.

Purple Gene Reviews
'Tom Dowd & the Language of Music'
Purple Gene's review of the Documentary Movie "Tom Dowd & the Language of Music" (2003) Directed by Mark Moorman view trailer:
Talk about the "Nuclear Option" !!!!!! Can you imagine having this choice: Being a prime nuclear Physicist working on the Manhattan Project….or ….Being the prime music engineer working with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Eric Clapton ??????
Thank gawd that Tom Dowd chose the latter…..because this guy was successful with whatever he touched…..we're talking Master Musical Magician. It turns out that back in the early 1950s Tom Dowd was actually involved in the A bomb tests in the Bikini Islands and was on his way to becoming involved with the infamous Manhattan Project when his life took a curious turn…LEFT….right into the little engineering booth in Manhattan for Atlantic Records…..with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Stick McGee and what was at the time known as "Race Records"….Well Tommy was a wizard with the machinery and the next thing you know in walks Ray Charles and the next thing you know Tom Dowd has him recording hit after hit….Well they changed the name of the music to "Rhythm and Blues" and they got a mixed race band (Booker T and the MGs) and lordy lordy…down come the barriers.
Next thing you know, Tommy builds an 8 track tape recorder and a mixing board with slides instead of knobs and in walks the drifters and they record "Stand By Me"….bom.bom.du du bom bom…remember that base line? Tommy isolated and over dubbed it so you could actually hear it separated on the radio….smash hit.. Next thing you know in walks Aretha Franklin and Tommy sits down with her and they arrange this little tune called "Respect"…smash hit…Then Rufus Thomas and "Walking the Dog" and Otis Redding and "Try a Little Tenderness" on and on and on…..
Next thing you know, in walks these guys from England called …."Cream"…..Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton and out comes…"The Sunshine of Your Love". In comes Yes, Led Zeppelin, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and the Rolling Stones. At the same time Tommy went over to England and talked to George Martin and the Beatles…who were still recording with a 3 track machine…amazing….
I think you get the picture…this was the genius behind the genius of Ray. This was the guy who gave a clear voice to the Queen of Soul. This was the amazing rhythm and beat you heard on all the great southern rock by the Allman Brothers. This was the guy that captured the stunning guitar work on "Layla" with Duane Allman and Eric Clapton. Tom Dowd was an engineering genius and a recording wizard and the musicians adored him….This documentary brings out the warm and wonderful relationships that he developed over the years…climaxed by a final reunion of Tom Dowd with Ray Charles…the affection is infectious….I loved this movie….
Purple Gene give the documentary movie "Tom Dowd and the Engineering of Music" 10 big huge thrilling guitar solos out of 10 for getting me to sing along and stand up and clap at the end!

Live Aid Organizers Announce New Shows
'Live 8'
Twenty years after the Live Aid concerts, musical superstars are joining in a five-city spectacular to push a political solution for African poverty.
"We don't want people's money. We want them," Bob Geldof, the driving force behind the Band Aid and Live Aid campaigns, said Tuesday as he announced plans for Live 8 concerts on July 2 just days before leaders of the world's richest countries, the G8, meet in Britain.
Musicians including Madonna, Paul McCartney, U2, Bon Jovi, Brian Wilson, Crosby Stills & Nash, Coldplay, Sting, Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z will grace stages in London, Philadelphia, Berlin, Paris and Rome.
The concerts will be free. Musicians will donate their services, and other costs will be met by corporate sponsors.
For the rest, 'Live 8'

Jury Finds in Favor
Trent Reznor
A jury has awarded alternative rocker Trent Reznor $2.95 million after finding that a former manager breached his contract and acted fraudulently, a lawyer said Tuesday.
The jury in U.S. District Court in Manhattan delivered the verdict Friday against John Malm, Reznor's longtime manager, said the lawyer, Zia F. Modabber. The award likely would top $4 million when interest is added.
The civil verdict came after a three-week trial in which Reznor testified that he was stunned to learn in 2003 that despite millions of dollars in earnings by his band he was left with as little as $400,000 in cash.

Children's Home Closes
Strawberry Field
A British children's home immortalized in the Beatles hit "Strawberry Fields Forever" closes on Tuesday after 69 years of looking after Liverpool's disadvantaged youngsters.
The Salvation Army said all the children had left the Strawberry Field home and childcare provision at the Beaconsfield Road site ended today.
No decision has been made on the fate of the home or its iconic wrought iron gates that became well-known to thousands of Beatles fans after the song was released in 1967.
Lennon used to visit the home as a boy to play with childhood friends in its grounds. He modified the name to make it flow better for the song.

Rejects Da Vinci Code Film Plans
Westminster Abbey
Producers of the upcoming movie based on the blockbuster novel "The Da Vinci Code" were not allowed to film in Britain's Westminster Abbey after church officials denounced the book as "theologically unsound."
The 940-year-old London Abbey, where British monarchs are crowned, features in the international murder mystery by U.S. author Dan Brown which has been condemned by the Vatican and Anglican Church leaders for distorting the Christian message.
The novel alleges Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had children, whereas Christians are taught that Christ never married and was childless when he was crucified.
"Although a real page turner, 'The Da Vinci code' is theologically unsound and we cannot commend or endorse the contentious and wayward religious and historic suggestions made in the book -- nor its views of Christianity and the New Testament," the Abbey said in a statement.
"It would therefore be inappropriate to film scenes from the book here."

Seattle Security
Snoop Dogg
A hip-hop fan says he was beaten by rapper Snoop Dogg and other artists during a concert near Seattle over the weekend.
Richard Monroe, 24, said he was invited onstage during a concert by Snoop Dogg, The Game and Oowee on Saturday at the White River Amphitheater in Auburn, a Seattle suburb.
The incident, which was captured on a home video, reportedly took place during a performance of Snoop Dogg's song "Gin and Juice."
In video footage aired on local TV, Monroe appeared behind Snoop and placed his hand on the rapper's shoulder before being knocked down and beaten by bodyguards and other unidentified people onstage. Snoop Dogg is seen in the video, but it is unclear if he is beating Monroe.
In a statement released Tuesday, Snoop Dogg publicist Meredith O'Sullivan said, "any person who jumps onstage at a concert has to be interpreted as a security threat and an immediate risk to both the performers onstage as well as the fans in the audience. Once a breach of security has been made, authorities are forced to take the proper measures to ensure safety."

Turns 25, Hits the Road
Def Leppard
First they were rock gods. A decade later, Def Leppard almost became rock ghosts. Now the band that defined 1980s party rock can call itself a rock survivor. It's marking 25 years since its major label debut with the release of "Rock Of Ages: The Definitive Collection" and a much-anticipated summer tour.
"A lot of it is down to the natural alignment of the stars. What you have when you break it down is a band that signed a record deal more than 20 years ago and ... is still making records," lead singer Joe Elliott recently told The Associated Press. "To survive, you have to adapt, go along with things."
Def Leppard has overcome everything from the death of a band member to the debilitating injury of another, from making back-to-back mega-monster-hit albums ("Pyromania" and "Hysteria") to releasing a commercial bomb ("Slang").
They thrived during the '80s and early '90s with sold-out stadium tours, and survived the leaner times in smaller venues in the late '90s. But unlike many of the monster '80s bands, Def Leppard never called it quits, never took an extended break that could be viewed as a parting of the ways.
For a lot more, Def Leppard

Arrested for Alleged Groping
Christian Slater
Christian Slater, 35, was accused of touching the woman's buttocks near 93rd Street and Third Avenue on the Upper East Side around 1:50 a.m., said a police spokesman, Detective John Sweeney.
The woman, who was not identified, flagged down police to report the incident, Sweeney said. Slater was found nearby and the woman identified him as the man who groped her.
Slater, who's appearing on Broadway in "The Glass Menagerie," was arrested on a charge of third-degree sexual abuse. He was expected Tuesday in Manhattan Criminal Court.

Hollywood High-Rise Fire
Sunset Vine Tower
Fire crews extinguished a fire on the roof of an 18-story building in Hollywood Tuesday afternoon.
The abandoned building is at Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street. City fire crews fought the blaze from the rooftop.
Arson investigators are at the site. Authorities said the fire probably started in machinery on the roof.
About 100 firefighters responded to the building, which is being renovated.

I spent a good chunk of the Raygun/#41 years working at the Disney Channel when it was located on the 15th floor of this building -
the Sunset Vine Tower - as it was called. Back then there was a wonderful bar on the top floor - 'Simply Blues'.
The building was used in the movie
Earthquake -
here's a picture of it from the movie.
Didn't have time to look for a link, but it was also used in an old 'Outer Limits'.
An electrical fire in 2001 rendered the building useless & abandoned.
