Al Qaeda Inc. (NYSE: AQI) reported a 3.6% drop in revenues for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005, but an annual report released today assures shareholders that senior-level executives remain committed to their bid for a hostile takeover of humanity. ...
To boost revenue Al Qaeda has unveiled a new product line just in time for Christmas and Kwanzaa. Items include T-shirts ("Coed Naked Suicide Bombers" and "Martyrs Do It in the Afterlife"), toy suicide belts for "Lil' Terrorists" and an Allah action figure with Kung Fu grip.
Molly Ivins: Another Mission Accomplished
Bush claimed in his Naval Academy speech that 80 Iraqi army and police battalions are fighting alongside American units, while another 40 are taking the lead in fighting. But last summer, military leaders told Congress that three of the 115 Iraqi battalions are capable of fighting without U.S. help, and in October Gen. George Casey, the American commander in Iraq, lowered that to one..
Rep. Sherrod Brown: Why I'm a Progressive (huffingtonpost.com)
Most of my political heroes were progressives: Theodore Roosevelt, Robert Kennedy, John Lewis, and of course, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Most were Democrats, but not all. They knew that legislation is only one way to fight social and economic justice. They knew that we must also directly confront the sources of that injustice.
Cenk Uygur:Humans Have Sex: Get Over It (huffingtonpost.com)
And we go around preaching to each other about how we are not supposed to have sex unless it is under just the right circumstances prescribed by the Creator of the Universe. Not before you get married, not after, unless it's your spouse, not with yourself, not with someone of the same sex, not that way, not this way, not in public, not on a boat and not with a goat. People make me laugh.
The year was 1963….and it was the "Summer of Love" for two losers up on "Brokeback Mountain"….the Promo line for this movie is "Love is a force of Nature" and for Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger - "A Knight's Tale" (2001) - "Monster's Ball" (2001) - "Lords of Dogtown" (2005) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal - "Donnie Darko" (2001) - "Bubble Boy" (2001) - "Jarhead" (2005) , their Summer of Love became the Winter of their Discontent !
"Brokeback Mountain" is not a "Gay" Cowboy movie…although I doubt many old boys up in Wyoming or down in Texas are gonna call it anything else! It kind of reminded me of "Wuthering Heights"…. with horses! "Summer Lovers'….with spurs!
This is a painfully powerful portrait of two people who are rather damaged from their childhoods and very closed with their emotions. Ennis and Jack get sent up to Brokeback to tend sheep for the summer (No sheep jokes please). Like normal cowboys, they have to ride and rope…and cook beans every day and drink whiskey every night. We got a thousand sheep, Coyotes, Cattle Dogs and a Big Black Bear. We also have one freezing cold night where Ennis and Jack stay warm in the tent together and end up having pull your jeans down doggie style steaming hot sex.
What do you say to your partner the next morning????? Well Ennis says to Jack…."You know I'm not Queer?" They spend the rest of the Summer up there having the "time of their lives"! But at the end of August they had to leave Brokeback Mountain and return to the reality of their mundane existence.
Ennis gets married to Alma (Michelle Williams - "Lassie" (1994) - "Dawson's Creek" (1998) - "But I'm a Cheerleader" (1999) and they have 2 daughters and seem to be doing OK….until Ennis gets a postcard from Jack who wants to pay his old "Fishing Buddy" a visit……Well Ennis is very excited and he and Jack end up going to Brokeback for a week…..they fall right into their relationship making up for lost time…..
Here the movie takes on the tone of "Same Time, Next Year" (1978) and Jack starts showing up and Alma sees them making out…..Ennis gets divorced and sees the girls once a month….Jack ends up marrying the daughter of a successful farm equipment salesman named Lureen (Anne Hathaway - "Pricess Diaries" (2001) - "Nicholas Nickleby" (2002) - "Ella Enchanted" (2004) and he has a son… we get to see 20 years of these 2 guys struggling to make sense of their lives and never losing that big "Let's get a spread and live together for the rest of our lives" longing….
Spoiler Alert
Tragedy strikes and the sadness is really amazing (I saw this at the California Theater in Berkeley and there wasn't a dry eye anywhere in the packed house) When Ennis visits Jack's parents stark little house up in the hills to discuss the "ashes" He goes upstairs to Jack's old room and finds his own shirt in the closet with a picture of Brokeback Mountain…
Ennis is all alone now in his trailer….but a big black muscle car drives up through the dust and his 19 year old daughter, Alma Jr. (Kate Maro - "Random Hearts" (1999) - "Tadpole" (2002) - "The Californians" (2005) jumps out…..She tells her dad that she has fallen in love and is going to get married and ever though her mom has re-married she wants Ennis to come to the wedding. Ennis mutters something about a cattle drive up in the Tetons…..and he sees the disappointment in his daughters eyes….you can see his whole life change as he tells her he'll be there for her…..
The end of the movie is Ennis looking one last time on that picture of Brokeback Mountain on the inside of his closet door….and closing It!
Purple Gene give "Brokeback Mountain" 9 long drawn slow burning cigarettes out of 10 for being an almost perfect movie about how some things are really hard to quit!
The kid had another doctor appointment, so he got to miss math class today.

Robert Redford recently did something not so unusual for him. He hung out with his pal Paul Newman.
But what was different: He did it for a documentary to air on Sundance Channel, the cable network he founded but seldom appears on.
As the season finale of "Iconoclasts," this hour-long portrait sticks to the format of the five that came before. It brings together a pair of innovators from different creative fields for one to serve as an admiring guide into the world of the other. Like chef Mario Batali on rocker Michael Stipe. Actress Renee Zellweger on correspondent Christiane Amanpour.
Activist and comedian Dick Gregory speaks to attendees gathered at the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Dallas, Monday, Dec. 19, 2005. Gregory addressed the case of Thomas Miller-El, who remains jailed in Dallas pending a hearing on a new trial in the 1986 robbery and slaying of an Irving, Texas, motel clerk. The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned his capital murder conviction and death sentence, citing racial bias in selection of his jury.

Pink Floyd fans waiting in vain for the band to reunite for a tour will have to make do with the next best thing: the first solo trek in more than 20 years by singer/guitarist David Gilmour.
A week after he announced plans to tour Europe in March, Gilmour on Monday said he would play 10 shows in five North American cities, beginning on April 4 with a two-night stand at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
The trek will also take him to Toronto (April 9-10, Massey Hall), Chicago (April 12-13, Rosemont Theater), Oakland, Calif. (April 16-17, Paramount Theater), and Los Angeles (April 19, Kodak Theater; April 20, Gibson Amphitheater).
Gov. Arnold $chwarzenegger on Monday told officials in his hometown in Austria to remove his name from a sports stadium and stop using his identity to promote the city.
The governor's request came after politicians in Graz began a petition drive to rename the stadium, reacting to $chwarzenegger's decision last week to deny clemency to condemned inmate Stanley Tookie Williams. Opposition to the death penalty is strong in Austria.
"In all likelihood, during my term as governor, I will have to make similar and equally difficult decisions," $chwarzenegger said in the letter. "To spare the responsible politicians of the city of Graz further concern, I withdraw from them as of this day the right to use my name in association with the Liebenauer Stadium."
In the letter, $chwarzenegger also said he would no longer permit the use of his name "to advertise or promote the city of Graz in any way" and would return the city's "ring of honor."
Andrew Wyeth's storied collection of 240 images of neighbor Helga Testorf has been sold to an American buyer, and is no longer in the custody of the Brandywine River Museum.
Ann Richards Nitze of Washington, D.C., who arranged the sale of the Helga Pictures, declined to identify the buyer or the price to The Philadelphia Inquirer, which reported the sale in Sunday's editions.
Wyeth, now 88, stunned the art world in 1986 when he revealed a secret cache of 240 paintings, watercolors and pencil studies he had done of Testorf between 1971 and 1985. The news was a surprise even to Wyeth's wife, Betsy.
Wyeth sold the collection to someone who, in turn, sold it in 1989 to a Japanese collector. That buyer, though, entrusted it to the Brandywine, which is near Wyeth's property in suburban Philadelphia. Some Helga works have been displayed at the museum over the years, and others were loaned for traveling exhibitions.
Australian artist and entertainer Rolf Harris stands next to his new portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in London in this handout image released by the BBC on December 19, 2005. The portrait, painted to celebrate the Queen's 80th birthday in 2006, will go on display to the public at Buckingham Palace in London from December 20 until June 11, 2006.
Michelle Rodriguez, a star on ABC's "Lost," complained after her arrest for drunken driving earlier this month that police were taking away her freedom.
Officers pulled Rodriguez over early on Dec. 1 after spotting her black Mercedes allegedly weaving down Pali Highway in the Honolulu-bound lanes from Kailua.
Rodriguez had a blood alcohol level of 0.145, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08, according to documents obtained by KITV-TV.
"I don't (expletive) belong here! Why don't you just put a gun to my head and shoot me! You've already taken my freedom! You might as well take my life too!" she said, KITV reported Friday.

Steve Hines spends hours camped out at the Nashville Public Library, poring through century-old reference books and magazines, looking for obscure works by famous authors.
Hines is hoping to find and publish stories by writers such as Louisa May Alcott and Laura Ingalls Wilder - not the famous novels like "Little Women" or "Little House on the Prairie," but lesser-known work that still appeals to die-hard fans.
Copyright for most books and stories published in the United States before 1978 expires after 75 years, putting it in the public domain. That means anyone can republish the stories for profit.
His first success was a largely forgotten collection of articles written by Wilder when she worked as a journalist - well before she wrote the "Little House on the Prairie" series.
Hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has banned all Western music from Iran's state radio and TV stations - an eerie reminder of the 1979 Islamic revolution when popular music was outlawed as "un-Islamic" under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
Today, though, the sounds of hip-hop can be heard blaring from car radios in Tehran's streets, and Eric Clapton's "Rush" and the Eagles' "Hotel California" regularly accompany Iranian broadcasts.
No more - the official IRAN Persian daily reported Monday that Ahmadinejad, as head of the Supreme Cultural Revolutionary Council, ordered the enactment of an October ruling by the council to ban all Western music, including classical music, on state broadcast outlets.

Some 250 pieces of vintage animation work from classic Walt Disney films have been discovered at a Japanese university, the US entertainment company said.
The huge collection features work from "Flowers and Trees," the world's oldest color animation, which was released in 1932.
It also includes original painted work, drawings and background pictures from movies such as "Sleeping Beauty," "Fantasia," "Bambi" and "Cinderella."
Was the name of a swanky bar in downtown Greensboro inspired by a literary giant or a pet bulldog? It may take a court decision to settle the dispute.
The owner of Hemingway's Downtown says he named the 6-month-old business after the English bulldog he had as a boy.
Heirs of Ernest Hemingway, the author of "The Old Man and the Sea" and "A Farewell to Arms," say that doesn't matter and have filed a lawsuit in U.S. Middle District Court claiming trademark infringement and unfair competition.

The distinctive chocolate bar on the dust jacket of a new book about the founder of the Hershey Co. violates its trademark, the candy maker said in a federal lawsuit.
The company wants an injunction to prevent publisher Simon & Schuster Inc. from using Hershey-owned images to market Hershey: Milton S. Hershey's Extraordinary Life of Wealth, Empire and Utopian Dreams, which is coming out next month.
More than half the 18,000-copy initial print run has been shipped, and the company said it would harm its relationship with booksellers to stop filling orders or to recall copies.
Enzo Stuarti, an Italian tenor who performed in Broadway musicals and at Carnegie Hall, and did popular TV commercials plugging a spaghetti sauce, has died of heart failure.
He performed under the names Larry Lawrence and Larry Stuart before taking the name Enzo Stuarti.
Stuarti was a frequent guest on television talk shows, including the Ed Sullivan Show, the Mike Douglas show and the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
Besides his singing career, Stuarti appeared in commercials for Ragu spaghetti sauce, delivering the "That's a nice" line about the sauce.
