'This is criminal': Malik Rahim reports from New Orleans (sfbayview.com)
If you ain't got no money in America, you're on your own. People were told to go to the Superdome, but they have no food, no water there. And before they could get in, people had to stand in line for 4-5 hours in the rain because everybody was being searched one by one at the entrance.
Christian Caryl: Why They Do It (nybooks.com)
Suicide bombing is increasingly becoming the weapon of choice for a new kind of global insurgency. The terrorized grope for explanations. It is hardly a surprise that many of us assume that suicide terrorists are religious zealots whose irrational fanaticism makes them seek death. ... the reality is far more complex, and, it should be said, far less comforting.
Karel Charles Bouley: The wrong battles (advocate.com)
We know how limited our resources are in the battle for equality, and how skittish our allies. So why waste time, money, and goodwill on denouncing Family Guy and railing against a Supreme Court shoo-in like John Roberts?
Roger Ebert: Answer Man
The critic peers into the trash can so that you don't have to, as long as you trust the critic to describe the trash accurately. What happens, though, is that even a review like mine probably sells some tickets. In theory, the service to readers outweighs the benefit to the film.
ROGER EBERT: Telluride #3: Limelight on Rooney
TELLURIDE, Colo. - It is the longest career in the history of show businesses. Mickey Rooney first appeared on stage when he was 17 months old.
ROGER EBERT: Telluride #2: Bio-pics lay Oscar bait
TELLURIDE, Colo. - Oscar season opens every September with the Telluride and Toronto film festivals, and again this year, biopics seem to be leading the field.
Boy was I in the mood for a break from the incredible Katrina catstrophe……I had to get away from the TV screen and the Computer screen and the front pages of the newspapers….so I drove down to Jack London Square for some "comedy Relief:!!!!!
First I had to wait in a car line for 10 minutes to get into the garage to park…..then I had to follow a lame brain in an old Volkswagon "Bug" while he looked for a spot….Next I had to wait in line for a ticket for fifteen minutes…can anyone tell me how someone can stand in line that long and not know what movie they wanna see by the time it's their turn to pay????? Then I had to stand in line for fifteen more minutes for my Popcorn and Fruit Punch …can anyone tell me how someone can stand in line that long and not know what the fuck they wanna eat by the time it's their turn to order??? Finally I had to drain my lizard before the trailers and the movie began…10 more minutes of meandering men waiting to PISS…..Ah…at last I can sit down….TWO FUCKING ROWS FROM THE SCREEN!!!!
I'M READY FOR SOME FUCKING COMEDY…GOD DAMMIT !!!!!!!
Andy would really rather stay at home and play with his action figures and make egg salad sandwiches…..that is until he meets Trish (
Catherine Keener
- "Being John Malkovich
" - "Death to Smoochy
" - "Capote
") who is a quirky looking older chick who works across the street selling E-Bay shit…..She leaves Andy her phone number…he calls her later and they have a date and come home and hop in her sack….and are just about to DO IT (he's opened all the condoms to test them first) and her 16 year old daughter and boyfriend pop open the bedroom door "Oh my Gawd…MOM …what are you doing?" . Well it turns out that Trish has 3 kids and a 1 year old grandkid…so Trish and Andy decide to have 20 more dates WITHOUT SEX !!!! Andy still hasn't told her he's a virgin and now he has postponed the big moment for a while.
Well when the 20th date comes, Trish is as horny as hell and wants to bang Andy right on top of some of his action figures….well Andy panics and runs away……right back to the nightclub where his 3 friends are… and ….in walks Beth (
Elizabeth Banks
- "Shaft
" - "Slither
" - Spider-Man
") who has met Andy before and grabs him by his pants and proceeds to take him to her love torture chamber…and Andy has resigned himself to finally getting this whole virgin thing over with……Just as Beth is about to do nasty things to Andy, his 3 pals come a save him from her clutches….Now poor Andy is all turgid and tense and gets on his bike to ride it off….but Trish is back after him and there is a chase scene and Andy crashes and as he is on the ground cradled in Trish's arms he tells her "I'm a Virgin"!
The next thing ya know…they're getting married and then…finally Andy, the virgin, and Trish the weird one are alone in bed on their wedding night………they get naked for the big moment…he enters her gently…she smiles…and 1 minute later …..he's no longer a virgin Ha Ha Ha.
Purple Gene gives "40 Year Old Virgin
" 9 scented, flavored, colored, extra large condoms out of 10 for being nasty, sweet and hilarious….and worth all the trouble to see!
Was farting around in the kitchen with the TV 'news' on in the background, when I was sure I heard the talking head say "moron the president." Then I realized he actually said "more on the president".
Like my version better.

Mikhail Gorbachev and Ted Turner will each deliver lectures at Kansas State University this fall. Their speeches, part of Kansas State's Landon Lecture series, are free and open to the public.
The lecture series is named for former Gov. Alf Landon, who died in 1987. He was governor of Kansas for two terms in the 1930s and the Republican nominee for president in 1936, when President Franklin Roosevelt won his second term
Gorbachev, a Nobel Peace prize winner who paved the way for communism's downfall and the Soviet Union's dissolution, is scheduled to speak Oct. 28. Turner, best known for launching CNN and the Turner Broadcasting empire, will speak Nov. 29.

Those who think "The Wizard of Oz" is the story of a Kansas farm girl singing about rainbows and skipping down a yellow brick road in red slippers should think again.
There's a lot more to the world of Munchkins and witches than most people realize, as a trip through the Wizard of Oz Museum in this rural town shows.
The fascination for all things Oz goes back more than a century but was boosted by the 1939 movie classic. Oz festivals are scattered around the country, including one here in October. Oz collectables are big business. Scores of Web sites are devoted to Oz, and there's even the International Wizard of Oz Club.
"The mystique is that Oz is the good place, where people are happy and differences are respected," said Oz scholar Stephen Teller, an English professor at Pittsburg State University. "The place was the American utopia."
While pop singer Justin Jeffre was speaking at a rally in his bid for mayor, dozens of teenage and 20-something women were backstage trying to talk to his 98 Degrees bandmate Nick Lachey.
Lachey, husband of actress Jessica Simpson, made a pitch on stage for Jeffre's candidacy as the group reunited for a rare appearance together.
"It's a very important time for Cincinnati," Lachey said. "Don't take it lightly. This is a big deal - and this guy knows what he's talking about."

People magazine says former "Saturday Night Live" comedian Kevin Nealon tied the knot with actress Susan Yeagley in Bellagio, Italy over the weekend. Yeagley had a bit part in George Clooney's movie "Intolerable Cruelty" and the wedding was held just across the lake from Clooney's villa.
After the ceremony, Nealon was asked if they were going to follow the Italian tradition of having kids soon. Nealon said they were going to follow the Italian tradition of having a huge bottle of wine.

Experts in Norway on Monday said they were convinced that a painting discovered in Germany is a previously unknown work by Norwegian master Edvard Munch.
The painting, being called "The girl and the four male heads", was found in the collection of the museum Kunsthalle Bremen museum in Germany and taken to the Munch Museum in Oslo for evaluation. Experts there said it was probably painted by Munch in 1898 or 1899, and differs from his style of the time.
The new painting was found when the Germany gallery removed another known Munch painting from its frame, and found the new painting underneath the work on display. The new painting is currently on display at the Munch Museum in Oslo.
A tourist takes a picture of the monument officially named 'Resurrection Memorial - Eternal glory to the heroes of Romania's 1989 revolution' which was unveiled in downtown Bucharest September 5, 2005. Described as a skewered potato and a brain on a stick, Romania's monument to the heroes of its 1989 anti-communist revolution was inaugurated on Monday amid widespread criticism of its artistic merit. The $2 million, 25-metre-high (82 foot) marble and copper sculpture drew heated controversy long before President Traian Basescu opened it, praising the 1,058 people killed in the uprising that overthrew Stalinist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday toured areas of her home state hit by Hurricane Katrina and disputed claims her government had been slow to respond because most of the victims were black.
Rice, the most senior black member of resident George W. Bush's Cabinet, said she did not believe race had anything to do with how quickly the government reacted to Katrina, which killed thousands and displaced millions along the Gulf coast.
On Sunday, she attended a church service in Whistler, Alabama, and prayed alongside the congregation for victims of the hurricane.
Asked to say a few words from the pulpit, Rice, a preacher's daughter, said: "The Lord Jesus Christ is going to come on time." She added: "If we just wait."
Inside a dark room, realistic-looking "human body parts" are stacked on shelves and hanging on meat hooks. The place looks like a mortuary or the lair of a serial killer, but in fact, it's a bakery. What appears to be putrefying body parts are the bread sculptures of 28-year-old art student Kittiwat Unarrom.
"Of course, people were shocked and thought that I was mad when they saw the works. But once they knew the idea behind it, they understood and became interested in the work itself, instead of thinking that I am crazy," said the fine arts masters degree student.
"When people see the bread, they don't want to eat it. But when they taste it, it's just normal bread," he said. "The lesson is 'don't judge just by outer appearances.'"
Fred Joerger, one of Disneyland's original model makers who crafted miniature versions of the park's Sleeping Beauty Castle and other attractions, died Aug. 26 of natural causes. He was 91.
Walt Disney hired Joerger in 1953 as one of his first three model makers. They invented the profession that became known as "Imagineering" - Disney's term for the imagination and engineering behind theme park rides.
Joerger made models of the steamboat Mark Twain, Main Street, the Jungle Cruise, the Matterhorn and much of the rest of the original Disneyland.
He also became a field art director, ensuring that such rides as Pirates of the Caribbean and Submarine Voyage achieved the looks envisioned by Disney's Imagineers.
Joerger retired in 1979 but returned a few years later to supervise the look of Disney's Epcot Center in Florida and the rock work for Tokyo Disneyland.
A cat sits in front of Preservation Hall, a historic jazz hall in the French Quarter, in New Orleans, Louisiana September 5, 2005. Thousands of families returned to their battered homes outside New Orleans on Monday to pick up the pieces left by Hurricane Katrina, and President George W. Bush promised support to aid recovery from a disaster in which aid efforts were bungled and 10,000 may have died.
