The Desert Post Weekly
According to the Columbia Journalism Review, the Worst Newspaper in America is The Daily Oklahoman, and they rip it a new one. "Where else can you find a big-city editorial page - run by a Christian Coalition devotee plucked from Washington, D.C.'s right-wing Free Congress Foundation - that not only demonizes unions, environmentalists, feminists, Planned Parenthood, and public education, but also seems obsessed with lecturing gays?" Good question. The answer? How about "all over the place."
I might disagree with everything The Daily Oklahoman has to say, but at least they HAVE something to say, and as wrongheaded as they are, they say it with passion and conviction.
Any journalism with passion and conviction isn't all bad. Writing from the heart is always better than writing without any heart.
To me, the worst journalism of all is lazy, passionless, self-serving drivel, journalism that has NOTHING to say and keeps saying it, journalism that ignores the grand opportunity to actually say something meaningful in favor of endless filler. It's been said that people should think globally but act locally, which means the worst newspapers are those that not only don't think globally, they don't think at all.
By those standards, my local weekly paper, the Desert Post Weekly, serving Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, is one of the worst newspapers in America.
For one thing, it poses as an "alternative" to the local daily, the Desert Sun, when it's actually owned by the Desert Sun, and fully half of its content is reprinted from the Desert Sun. This is deceptive and despicable, convincing out-of-towners they're getting some sort of underground scoop when they're getting the same old same old.
The paper is edited by Brian Medricka, who used to do listings at the Desert Sun. Employees of the paper have let me know anonymously that they feel the pain of working for a man who doesn't realize what a pathetic joke he is. Nothing is worse than someone who thinks he's funny but actually has no sense of humor whatsoever. Medricka loves gay sexual innuendo. It pisses off his workers at their staff meetings but they say nothing, so us hapless readers are left with cover stories like "You Can Get Naked" (about nude spas), "Lick This" (hard-hitting investigative journalism about how many different flavors of ice cream there are), and "The White Stuff" (about, no not that, snow). In the ice cream issue, Medricka devoted an ENTIRE PAGE to pictures of the staff answering the "burning question" of what flavor ice cream they would be. I nominate it as the most embarrassing moment in publishing history. What kind of ice cream is Brian Medricka?
Brian Medricka is a moron. He's not even TRYING to be excellent. He's striving for mediocrity and succeeding enormously. You will never read a newspaper as lightweight as this. It's completely shameful that a city as sophisticated as Palm Springs has such a frivolous and irrelevant local "alternative" newspaper. They're not printing articles the Desert Sun wouldn't print because they're controversial or "alternative," they're printing articles the Desert Sun wouldn't print because they're inane. They put cute pictures of the staff on the front page, finally rising to the level of precocious high school yearbook. Their attempts at humor are just annoying and complete failures. The elevation of the ubiquitous "News of the Weird" to feature status completes the celebration of the trivial. Their way of dealing with controversial or important subjects ignored by the mainstream media is to ignore them too. If something important is happening, they're sure to avoid it. At a time when it seems that C students are running the country, I guess it's not surprising they've sunk so low, but there was a time when the paper was actually worth reading, way back when Mona DeCrinis was the editor. At least she had a brain.
Kevin Necessary (Ice cream flavor, "an offshoot of Chunky Monkey - Angry Monkey") is the paper's editorial cartoonist despite the fact he has never displayed the slightest iota of talent for editorial cartooning. None whatsoever. Every issue he begs the readers to send in ideas but none have materialized. If Trudeau ever asked his readers to submit ideas, he'd be inundated. Why hasn't Necessary been inundated with ideas from readers? Because nobody wants to be associated with his incredibly inane drawings.
I gave them a story. In Desert Hot Springs there's a housing project called "Mountain View" in which the hundreds of houses are packed together so tightly that not one of them has a view of the mountains. That's right, one of the only advantages of living in DHS is the spectacular view of Mount San Jacinto - and nobody in "Mountain View" can see it. But Medricka wouldn't want to offend any money grubbing real estate developers by exposing their callousness, would he? His response. To ban my e-mail address.
His response to negative letters to the editor? He asked me to stop "harassing his staff," despite the fact that none of them complained, and banned yet another hotmail address. Hey Brian. I can keep making up hotmail addresses forever.
It is, of course, a sign of insecurity to be unable to withstand criticism, which is the real reason he won't print my letters. Hell, if Pamela Anderson can take being "roasted," Brian should be able to take the heat. She's got more balls than he does. Brian's dick is so small that when he gets blown by old men, they have to put their teeth back in for him to feel anything. How's that for "harassing his staff?"
This might seem like overkill towards a paper that never strives to be anything more than innocuous, but that's the point. There are plenty of papers I strenuously disagree with, but nobody has ever disagreed with anything said in the Desert Post Weekly because the Desert Post Weekly never says anything. The only firm conviction editor Brian Medricka ever shows is to keep his head firmly planted between the butt cheeks of his corporate bosses.
Don't take my word for it. Next time you're in Palm Springs, pick one up. After reading it, you'll be calling Stephen Hawking and asking if he can help get your time back.
Idiots of the Week
Some anonymous organization of peabrains bought the Cabazon Dinosaurs off route 10 between LA and Palm Springs, made famous in PeeWee's Big Adventure, to turn the site into a creationist exhibit. Their theory is that since someone had to have designed these giant fake dinosaurs, someone must have designed the real ones.
According to this article, "The Book of Genesis, contend that most dinosaurs arrived on Earth the same day as Adam and Eve some 6,000 years ago, and later marched two by two onto Noah's Ark. The gift shop at the attraction, called the Cabazon Dinosaurs, sells toy dinosaurs whose labels warn, 'Don't swallow it! The fossil record does not support evolution...'
"[I]ts founder's believe that God created the world in six days. The dinosaurs, even super carnivores such as T. Rex, dined as vegetarians in the Garden of Eden until Adam and Eve sinned and only then did they feast on other creatures, according to the Christian-based young-Earth theory.

Uh, let's see. Adam and Eve was 6,000 years ago. 4,500 years AFTER that, there were still baby dinosaurs. That's 1,500 years ago. Christ was born about 2,000 years ago, which means there were still dinosaurs in the year 500, which is right after the Saxons captured Sussex from the Britons and just before King Arthur. Funny none of the history books mention Sir Galahad fighting velociraptors in his quest for the holy grail.
I guess "intelligent" doesn't include basic arithmetic.

MINISTRY OF RESHELVING GETTING 1984 OUT OF BOOKSTORE FICTION SECTIONS
This week, we launched the Ministry of Reshelving project. My partners in crime as founding members of the ministry: George, Kiyash, and Monica. This weekend we relocated 19 copies of George Orwell's 1984 in four different bookstores in Palo Alto, San Francisco, and Berkeley. It was high stealth adventure.
You are invited to join our efforts. How to Serve the Ministry of Reshelving:
Select a local bookstore to carry out your reshelving activities.
Download and print "This book has been relocated by the Ministry of Reshelving" bookmarks and "All copies of 1984 have been relocated" note cards to take with you to the bookstore. Or make your own. We recommend bringing a notecard and 5-10 bookmarks to each store.
Go to the bookstore and locate its copies of George Orwell's 1984. Unless the Ministry of Reshelving has already visited this bookstore, it is probably currently incorrectly classified as "Fiction" or "Literature."
Discreetly move all copies of 1984 to a more suitable section, such as "Current Events", "Politics", "History", "True Crime", or "New Non-Fiction."
Insert a Ministry of Reshelving bookmark into each copy of any book you have moved. Leave a note card in the empty space the books once occupied.
If you spot other incorrectly classified books, feel free to relocate them.

Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.
Here's the idea:
For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the TWO BIGGEST COMPANIES (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers.
It's really simple to do!!

Things I'm Supposed to Go Back and Fix
Dear Editor,
It has just come to my attention that Issue #76, Page 9; No Good Deed Goes Unpunished #2, states that Dennis Egan was the individual who had the idea for Plasphalt. This is absolutely untrue and I will also write to the Pocahontas Times from which your information was borrowed.
I am a painter and former Professor of Art at the University of California Santa Barbara. I was asked to make an art installation at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Art Forum. A friend, Nancy Merrill and I walked the Pacific Ocean beaches for months picking up waste plastic which we placed in the art gallery: SEA OF CLOUDS WHAT CAN I DO. This is documented in several books.
During those months I saw many seals and sea lions lying on the beach and dying of purulent wounds, entangled in drift nets. I was haunted by the sight and often could not sleep. Awakening one morning in May of 1987, before consciousness, a voice in my dream said, Put the waste plastic in the highways: plastic and asphalt are both petroleum, they will love each other and make stronger roads! The mountains and rivers wont have to be torn apart for aggregate and the earth wont be choked with non-biodegradable material. Glue the plastic down into the highways and no more animals will be hurt. (My website is below.)
I ran to class that morning and told 70 painting students. We all thought what a terrific idea! That evening I told my partner, Gary Fishback, an inventor. A few weeks later he told his friend Dennis Egan, who assisted in the research and contributed to the technology for the patent. It was NOT Dennis idea and I, being a woman, very much dislike it when men take credit for things they have not generated.

I am not presuming to "educate" you, you're obviously one of the brightest people around; I enjoy your wit and imagination more than I can say. But to the point: the possessive form of the word "it" is "its," with no apostrophe. With an apostrophe, viz., "it's," you have an elision that means "it is." I have read that this confusion results in the most common grammatical error in English.
Please forgive me if you have already taken care of this; I have just recently begun to read your wonderfully-crafted writings and, as yet, have no sense of the evolution of your work.

So let me get this straight. Somewhere in the more than 1,000 pages on my website, including more than 150 issues of Disinfotainment Today, 100 issues of Who's Going to Hell This Week? , one novel, two full length non-fiction books, numerous screenplays, several art galleries, and an archive with twenty years of journalism and film criticism, there's an "it's" that should be an "its?" Not that it's a mistake I don't want to fix, but to make me search for it reminds me of a demon whose name is an anagram for Santa. I don't want to re-read everything I've ever written. Help me out here.

I infer from your reply that the mistakes were simple typos rather than the result of an unrecognized error. Forgive me; I really do admire and envy the way your mind works.
As for the source of my concern: in reading two of your interviews (one with Tracey Ullman and the other with the man who propounds the a priori nature of conspiracies) I noticed the incorrectly apostrophe'd "it" two or three times. I admit that I had a VERY small sample from which to draw conclusions. I look forward to reading more of your writings. Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to share your experiences and insights.

Two rich white guys are running for governor of New Jersey this year. It's not an unusual election in that respect. A growing number of elections are "self-financed" -- a euphemism for rich folks buying public office. Here, I give this phenomenon a name.
Naming The New Politics
In days of yore the rich would seek a needy candidate, And legally (though quietly) his campaign chest inflate. Both giver and receiver liked the tradeoff here just fine, One got himself more access, one could buy more TV time.
But these days folks with money have devised a better plan; It's a lot more cost effective, it shuts out the middleman. Instead of buying influence with others they select, They run themselves for office and buy public posts direct.
The process here is simple, a no-strainer to relay; First you hire a consultant to spruce up your resume; Then greenery you sprinkle among local party hacks, And a way to dole out more's created via campaign PACs.
If on the stump it's clear you're not a public speaking giant, A coach can make you sound a lot like William Jennings Bryant; On bread and butter issues if you're prone to spouting gapers, A seasoned campaign flack will write you great position papers.
In the end, of course, it all comes down to making TV buys; When you spend enough on media, your numbers always rise. Perfect family, hard hat workers, ethnic types, a waving flag, Are the content of your message, which gets shown till viewers gag.
While talking heads may hold their nose at such crude repetition, It's the perfect way (just ask the pros) to beat the competition. In mayors' contests coast to coast, in House and Senate races, Rich nobodies who buy the tube end up with smiling faces.
So a monied power seeker need no longer use a beard, He can buy an office outright and no one now thinks its wierd. Though perhaps the deeper meanings here require research thorough, For me a simple term describes it - New Age rotten borough.

After decades of nearly constant touring, Willie Nelson had to go to great lengths to find a new place to play - he opened his own theater.
The redheaded gypsy will unveil Willie's Place on Sept. 26 at Carl's Corner truck stop, about 50 miles south of Dallas and about 15 miles from Nelson's birthplace of Abbott, Texas.
Nelson and his longtime friend Carl Cornelius began building Willie's Place six months ago to take "roadside attraction" to a whole new level. Leon Russell, Pauline Reese and James Hand are scheduled to play the truck stop, which Cornelius said will be a year-round venue with 850 seats and an 80-foot stage.
The last time George Clooney scored big in Las Vegas, he played a character who ripped off a casino in the movie "Ocean's Eleven." This time, instead of taking oodles of cash out of a megaresort, the actor's putting a sizable chunk of his own money into one.
Clooney has invested an undisclosed amount in a proposed $3 billion development called Las Ramblas to be built just east of the heart of the Las Vegas Strip.
Las Ramblas is planned for about 25 acres between the Hard Rock hotel-casino and the proposed W hotel, Starwood's newest Las Vegas venture that was recently announced. Las Ramblas is named for a fashionable and pedestrian-friendly area in Barcelona, Spain, that boasts a promenade and cafes.

When a comedian from Chicago makes it big on "Saturday Night Live" or joins the writing staff of "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," it's often the world-famous comedy troupe Second City that gets the credit. But for nearly 25 years, much of the celebrated talent from Second City's live sketch shows, like Mike Myers, Chris Farley and current "SNL" cast members Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, has also trained at ImprovOlympic.
It's a program with a fiercely loyal roster of alums, including actor-comedians Andy Richter, Andy Dick and Tim Meadows, many of whom flocked to Chicago for the chance to perform Saturday at a sold-out 25th anniversary reunion show.
While performers at Second City often rely on scripts, I.O. skits are completely improvised and based on audience suggestions.
A pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in "The Wizard of Oz" and insured for $1 million is missing from a Grand Rapids museum.
Police Chief Leigh Serfling said the slippers were stolen late Saturday or early Sunday. Someone entered the museum through a window and broke into the small display case holding the slippers.
Children's Discovery Museum director John Kelsch said the slippers belong to a Los Angeles man who loaned them to the museum for several weeks this summer.
Afghanistan is to get its own Oprah Winfrey-style chat show touching on taboo women's issues, a television station said, in a move likely to anger hardliners in the conservative Islamic nation.
Called Bonu, the Persian word for women, the show will be launched by privately-run Tolo Television, which has drawn condemnation from mullahs for airing music videos of scantily clad women and for accepting large US grants.
Tolo was the subject of international attention in May when the female host of its most popular music programme was found dead with gunshot wounds in a mysterious killing, for which no one has been charged.
A so far unknown work (a bust) made by the French artist Paul Gaugain is shown at Ordrupgaard Museum, northern Copenhagen August 29, 2005. The bust was discovered by coincidence by a Danish family named Avnso who lives in Olsted near Roskilde. The family has sold the bust to Ordrupgaard Museum for the amount 25, 000 Euros. Experts say Gauguin modelled the bust in Paris in 1881 and his son Jean was his model.

Glen Campbell, the group Alabama and pioneering black Grand Ole Opry musician DeFord Bailey will become the newest members of the Country Music Hall of Fame, said the Country Music Association, or CMA, on Monday.
Their formal induction will take place November 15 during the 39th Annual CMA Awards show from Madison Square Garden in New York City, said Ed Benson, director of the association.
Harmonica player Bailey, who died in 1982, was the first black regular on the Opry. He performed from 1925 until he was fired in 1942. While well-received by Opry audiences, he once described his road trips with other Opry stars in those days of racial segregation as "agonizing" because he was forced to sleep and eat in a car.
After he was fired, he opened a shoeshine stand in Nashville.
Six people have pleaded guilty to charges connected to the sale of thousands of phony LiveStrong wristbands and have turned over almost $112,000 to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's office said Monday.
In March, undercover investigators bought 1,000 of the counterfeit wristbands from a Manhattan storefront, authorities said.
Investigators said they found 81,000 more there and at a home in Queens. Authorities said importer Eastlink International Inc. distributed the wristbands to retailers around New York City.

Burger King's recently launched BK Chicken Fries marketing plan has run afoul of metal band Slipknot, which is evidently willing to declare its likeness to men in chicken suits.
At the center of the controversy is faux metal band Coq Roq, featured in TV spots for Chicken Fries and on its own Web site, where band merchandise is available. That Coq Roq resembles Slipknot in the visuals department has ruffled the latter's feathers.
According to an August 4 cease-and-desist letter from Slipknot attorney Howard Weitzman to Burger King and its ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, the similarities are no coincidence.

And while MPL -- the acronym stands for "McCartney Productions Ltd." -- has certainly focused on McCartney's work, it has grown to represent almost a century of copyrights from the likes of Buddy Holly, Jerry Herman, Frank Loesser, Meredith Willson and Harold Arlen.
MPL's catalog holdings include Nor-Va-Jak (which contains many of Holly's songs), Desilu Music (Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball's company), Edwin H. Morris & Co. (a major standards catalog), Meredith Willson Music and Frank Music (which includes songs by Loesser).

British tourists have left the residents of one charming Austrian village effing and blinding by constantly stealing the signs for their oddly-named village.
While British visitors are finding it hilarious, the residents of Fucking are failing to see the funny side, The Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported.
Only one kind of crimimal ever stalks the sleepy 32-house village near Salzburg on the German border -- cheeky British tourists armed with a sense of humour and a screwdriver.
"We will not stand for the Fucking signs being removed," the officer told the broadsheet.
"It may be very amusing for you British, but Fucking is simply Fucking to us. What is this big Fucking joke? It is puerile."
Photographer Horst Tappe, whose portraits of literary and artistic luminaries included Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Vladimir Nabokov and Alfred Hitchcock, has died, a friend said Monday. He was 67.
His most widely reproduced portraits included his photo of Picasso half in shadow and staring sideways and a 1970 shot of the Russian novelist Nabokov wearing knee pants and holding a butterfly net.
Other memorable photos include a wide-eyed Salvador Dali in a Western shirt with arms crossed, and James Bond creator Ian Fleming hand on chin.
The German photographer also captured images of actor Charlie Chaplin, British playwright Sir Noel Coward, U.S. writer Patricia Highsmith, French detective novelist Georges Simenon, American poet Ezra Pound, Indian novelist Salman Rushdie and Russian composer Igor Stravinsky.
Tappe studied photography in Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main. He continued his education in Vevey, Switzerland, before settling in the resort town of Montreux on the banks of Lake Geneva in 1965.
