Cory!! Strode On Graphic Novels

Jack Kirby

Now, I know that I said I was reviewing comic books for people who don't read comic books, but one of the things about a good comic book is that it keys in to nostalgia. So, this week, I'm going to wallow in a bit of nostalgia, and hopefully give people a comic that is simply a fun read.

When I was first reading comics as a kid, I was drawn immediately to the art of Jack Kirby. I didn't know at the time that he was the co-creator of characters like Captain America, The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Thos, The Silver Surfer, and many, many more. I just knew him as the guy who did stories that overwhelmed my imagination. He had just returned to Marvel Comics after a five-year stint at the competition, and was doing four comics a month.

That's right.

Writing and drawing four comic books of 22 pages each a month.

And I loved each and every one of them. Back then, I had to hope that they showed up at the grocery store and that I had the money for them, but I didn't need to check the credit boxes. I KNEW what books he was doing by the covers, filled with frenetic action that no other artist could put into a drawing, although they all tried.

One of those series was partially reprinted last week:  The Black Panther.

At the time, the character (who Jack co-created in the 60's) had been in a comic called "Jungle Action" and was in the midst of a story "ripped from the headlines" about the Ku Klux Klan. Sales were poor, and part of Kirby's deal with Marvel was that he could take over one of a limited number of characters, so he picked The Black Panther.

The previous story was dropped, and Kirby let his imagination run wild. In the collected version, the story starts with a band, and just gathers speed from there, and by the time you have read the first 22 pages, you've been introduced to a society of collectors who are interesting enough for their own series, an advanced human after six million years of evolution and a quest to find King Solomon's Mines. Keep in mind that in 1975, this was the first issue of a new comic book!

The trade paperback reprints seven complete issues, but there is enough inventiveness and creativity to fill twenty. Kirby's art, while highly stylistic by this point in his career is some of the best storytelling in comic books, and you get the feeling that you just can't read it fast enough.

The funny thing to me, as a long time comics fan, is that when Kirby's Black Panther started, comics fans at the time complained about Kirby not finishing up the other creator's story before starting his own, and the fact that he didn't write the character as "relevant" with "realistic dialogue", which were the buzzwords in comics at the time. However, as the years have gone on, and comic writing improved, most of the so-called relevant and realistic comics of the time come off as horribly dated and filled with purple prose, while Kirby's take on The Black Panther is still now what it was then, a roller-coaster of a story that is as fun to read as any Big Blockbuster movies wants to be.

Mount Flushmore

I saw an ad in the Sunday paper with a picture that screamed "Photoshop me!!!", so after applying some filters to emboss it into bas relief (or Bas Humbug Relief as Chuck Dickens might have said) here 'tis.

I have come up with a redesign for Mount Rushmore (Mount Flushmore). After all, the existing design insults the native Americans, screaming "Hi! We're dominant white males, and we've come to loot and pillage your land, and desecrate your mountains!"

I think it's not too late to return to Mount Rushmore and impose this design where the presidents' faces now are. It even makes token acknowledgment of the need to accommodate women.

If the Park Department disapproves of this design for Mount Flushmore, maybe they could invoke it at Stone Mountain, Georgia where the confederacy is memorialized, and rename it "The Urinal Mountains". That has a nice Russian ring to it.

Ray

Thanks, Ray!

Follow Up At Cinemocracy

Sore Winners

Cinemocracy went out in search of the Citizens United billboards this weekend, and we found two of the three. Last week, we exposed as a lie the group's erroneous claim that celebrities will see the "thank you" messages as they walk down the red carpet on their way into the Academy Awards. Turns out, one billboard actually is on Hollywood Boulevard, but a good four blocks away from the Kodak Theater at the corner of Hollywood and Whitley. It sits just above Mr. Rogers's star on the Walk of Fame, and, yes, that is Frederick's of Hollywood right next door.

Commentator Charged in Alleged Scam

Courtney D. Smith

Regulators filed criminal and civil charges Monday against a financial commentator who was paid more than $1 million in cash and stock to hype shares of marketing company a during appearances on CNBC, CNN and Bloomberg TV.

The commentator, Courtney D. Smith, helped "artificially inflate" GenesisIntermedia Inc.'s stock after the company went public in 1999, the Securities and Exchange Commission alleged in a civil lawsuit filed Monday.

Authorities claim he was secretly paid about $95,000 in cash and received about $1 million of GenesisIntermedia's shares.

Genesis' biggest lender and shareholder was Adnan Khashoggi, a Saudi Arabian millionaire known for his role as a middleman between former President Ronald Reagan's administration and its arms sales to Iran.

Station Reeling From Tsunami Parody

WQHT-FM

The music swelled, sounding the familiar first notes of the vintage charity hit "We Are the World." Then the lyrics kicked in - a torrent of bad taste, ethnic slurs and cruel insults about the killer south Asia tsunami.

The "parody," aired during morning drive time on New York radio's WQHT-FM, lasted three short minutes. Nearly three long weeks later, the self-proclaimed "premier hip-hop station in America" is still reeling: one of its morning co-hosts was fired, the show's producer was dumped, and five other employees remain suspended.

The "USA for Indonesia" song offended not only tens of thousands of listeners but advertisers like McDonald's.

"It's a mess," said Tom Taylor, editor of the trade publication Inside Radio. "It's taken on a life of its own. Clearly, this has touched a nerve."

Extends Oscar Broadcasts Deal

ABC

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives out Hollywood's Oscars, has extended the deal to air its annual awards show on the ABC television network for 10 years, Academy President Frank Pierson said on Monday.

Pierson declined to give financial details of the pact with the network, which is owned by The Walt Disney Co.

Pierson said this new deal gives ABC the right to air the telecast through 2014. ABC has broadcast the Oscars for nearly 30 years, reaching tens of millions of U.S. viewers and bringing in lucrative revenues from expensive advertising.

Work Begins on Installation

'The Gates'

Under bright, sunny skies on a warm February day, hundreds of workers began the weeklong process of erecting thousands of poles in Central Park for "The Gates," the large-scale public work of art by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

"The Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979-2005," a temporary work, opens Saturday and will consist of 7,500, 16-foot-high gates along 23 miles of footpaths. Free-hanging, saffron-colored fabric panels will be unfurled from each gate and dangle 7 feet above ground. The 16-day installation will be in place until Feb. 27.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude are paying for the project without sponsorship or donations. They have said they hope it will cost less than $21 million, but the final figure will not be known until the piece is completed.

Says He Delivered Goering's Poison Pill

Herbert Lee Stivers

A former US Army private who was a guard at the Nuremberg trials says he gave convicted Nazi war criminal Hermann Goering the poison capsule that enabled him to commit suicide two hours before his scheduled execution.

Entire books have been written pondering how the heavily guarded Nazi leader managed to evade justice. And while Herbert Lee Stivers's story cannot be proven, several experts on the era have said it rings true, according to a story in the Los Angeles Times.

Stivers, 78, a retired sheet metal worker from southern California, was a 19-year-old army private assigned to an honor guard that escorted Nazi defendants in and out of the courtroom during the post-World War II war crimes trials.

Stivers said he agreed to take "medicine" to a supposedly ailing Goering to impress a flirtatious local girl who approached him one day on the street.

Sets Around-The-World Sailing Mark

Ellen MacArthur

Ellen MacArthur has endured stormy seas, 65 mph winds, a broken sail, burns, bruises and exhaustion - even a close encounter with a whale. The payoff: a solo around-the-world sailing record.

The 28-year-old Englishwoman completed the 26,000-mile circumnavigation at 5:29 p.m. EST on Monday by crossing an imaginary finish line between Ushant, France, and the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall on the south coast of England.

MacArthur's journey began Nov. 28. Since then, she has slept an average of 30 minutes at a time and four hours in any day. She has reheated freeze-dried meals on a single burner stove while living area measuring 5 feet by 6 1/2 feet. Her water supply is desalinated from the sea.
