Purple Gene Reviews
Everton Blender at the Down Lo
Purple Genes' review of Reggae Royal "Everton Blender" playing at the "Down-Lo" Dance Hall in Berkeley, California Jan 29, 2005:
It was a cold night in Berkeley. But it was a clear night in Berkeley. Shattuck Avenue was, at the stroke of midnight, going to be party to a Jamaican Master………….
True "Blender"…Mind Bender
Reggae Defender…..Rasta Soul Sender
Smoky Robinson in Dreadlocks
Elvis Presley on the Rocks………
With "Blend Dem Band"
Everton Blender is on hand……………….
Everton Blender is the original "Family Man" . which is also the name of one of his superlative songs…."I am a Family Man….workin' for my Children"……I heard this tune spun by my son "D.J. Smoky" long before this concert…but I couldn't wait to see this "Conscious Dance Hall" Master and old school ROOTS Rasta perform….I wasn't prepared for his twenty year old daughter Isha (pronounced eye-sha) to open for him either….and I confess, the pulse and beat of the "Blend Dem Band" caught me off guard as well…...
At the stroke midnight, after Isha warmed up the huge throng with some conscious songs directed at the women in the crowd….Myself and Everton and D.J. Smoky rolled through the crowd Mohammed ALI style…..ready for the ring….roar of the audience…ladies and gentlemen…straight from Jamaica…the legend himself…Everton Blendeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrr….. resplendent in red, green and gold wrapped white outfit…rasta rod in hand…Everton launched into "World Corruption" …""Why do we have to WAR" and "War Monger Man" extremely pointed, political and poignant…without a dropped beat Everton sings "Herb getta bad rap"….."People respect the dead more than the living"…and "Where do the children play" all controversial and cutting messages…and then out of nowhere…a curve…."Jah didn't make "Little Green Apples" and it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime"….I couldn't believe he was covering this sixties schlock…but it sounded great and the whole hall was humping….
Everton did a song called "Is it because I'm Black" that was really personal and yet carried a racial message…..Then he sang an anthem song called "I Love Jah Jah" (Dedicated to my granddaughter Justyne "Jah Jah") ….and then the moment I came for……with a twinkle in his eye and a wicked down beat…."I am a "Family Man"….workin' for my Children"………what a great song …and with Isha singing back up and the mesmerizing reggae beat …it made my night…and everyone there roared in unison………
Purple Gene gives Everton Blender, Isha and the "Blend Dem Band" 10 super stars out of 10 for being conscious, charismatic and cool!

In a moment of morning-after madness, politicos within the Democratic Party are taking three giant steps backward from a woman's right to choose. The results could be disastrous for progressive women's political base. Š "We fought like mad to beat back the Republicans," blogged Karen M. Pays Special Tribute to Carson
Dave Letterman
David Letterman paid tribute to Johnny Carson on Monday by telling his jokes. On his first "Late Show" since Carson's death on Jan. 23, Letterman's opening monologue was comprised entirely of jokes that Carson had quietly sent to him over the past few months from retirement in California.
Letterman didn't tell the audience until after the monologue was over who wrote the jokes. His guest on Monday's show, former Carson producer Peter Lassally, had revealed a few days before Carson had died that the retired "Tonight" show host missed his nightly monologue and had written jokes for Letterman.
"I moved to Los Angeles from Indianapolis in 1975, and the reason I moved is because of Johnny Carson and the `Tonight' show," Letterman said. "And I'm not the only one. I would guess that maybe three generations of comedians moved to be where Johnny was because if you thought you were funny and you wanted to find out if you could hit major league pitching, you had to be on the `Tonight' show."
The entire show was devoted to Carson, filled with reminiscences from Lassally and Letterman.
At the end, Carson's old bandleader Doc Severinsen and his band - including put-upon sax player Tommy Newsome - performed one of Carson's favorite songs, "Here's That Rainy Day."

A&E Wins Bidding War
'The Sopranos'
A&E won a bidding war Monday for the rights to broadcast edited versions of "The Sopranos," with the $2.5 million per episode price tag believed to be the biggest ever for a series offered in syndication.
The Emmy-winning mob drama will begin on the basic cable network in fall 2006.
HBO chose A&E over TNT, the Turner Broadcasting network that concentrates on dramas. The deal for 78 episodes of "The Sopranos" eclipsed a $1.9 million-per-episode purchase made by USA and Bravo for "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."
With its brutal violence, language and sexual content, "The Sopranos" will prove to be a challenge for more conservative basic cable standards. HBO already produces separate, cleaner dialogue for international markets and will work with A&E to see how scenes can fit the standards, executives said.

Stumps for U.S. Election Reform
Krist Novoselic
Eleven years after the demise of his million-selling rock band Nirvana, Krist Novoselic is back on the road, but this time he's getting out of bed before noon.
Novoselic, whose bass guitar anchored one of the most popular and influential bands of the 1990s, now spends his time pushing for voting reforms that he thinks could change the cynicism many people feel about U.S. politics.
It's a gig that requires him to wear a suit and tie and speak to audiences that measure in the dozens, rather than the thousands.
In a slim book, "Of Grunge and Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy!," Novoselic outlines two approaches that he believes would breathe new life into politics.

Over Eastwood Film
Controversy
Clint Eastwood's drama "Million Dollar Baby" may be racking up the critical praise and plaudits -- including seven Academy Award nominations -- but it's what critics aren't saying that has become the real story, according to some. Critics' silence over the film's final emotional/ethical twist, is sparking ethical debate among activists and film critics alike. A group called Not Dead Yet has sponsored protests and picketing.
Thanks to the publicity, by now most readers should know that the film eventually raises serious issues surrounding assisted suicide or mercy killing. Moviegoers, of course, like most Americans, split on how they feel about it. Was it wrong, in this case, for film critics to refuse to give away the ending? Are they taking too much of a pro-euthanasia stance? Can they even seriously review this movie if they don't discuss its key component?
Since the film's release conservative commentators -- including Michael Medved and Rush Limbaugh -- have revealed the film's "secret" on radio shows and on Pat Robertson's "700 Club."

Libel Cases Cost $500,000 - So Far
Ahnold
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has rung up legal bills of more than a half million dollars to defend himself and campaign aides in libel cases related to groping allegations made during the 2003 recall election, according to records released Monday.
Campaign finance records show Schwarzenegger paid about $116,000 last year to prominent British attorney Keith Schilling to defend him. The attorney is still owed more than $150,000.
Records also show Schwarzenegger has paid or still owes a total of nearly $260,000 to attorneys who helped settle a separate libel suit brought by a movie stuntwoman who claimed Schwarzenegger's campaign lied about another groping incident.
Records show the governor is spending money donated to his Californians for Schwarzenegger committee, which he organized to support his election in the recall campaign.

Eruptions Possible
Mount Veniaminof & Mount Spurr
One Alaska volcano has been emitting small bursts of ash for three weeks and another is being shaken by tremors, indicating that eruptions are possible at both within weeks, seismologists said on Monday.
Mount Veniaminof on the Alaska Peninsula began spitting out ash earlier this month, and the volcano could be on the verge of a larger blowout, according to the federal-state Alaska Volcano Observatory.
Veniaminof is one of the biggest and most active volcanoes in the Aleutian Arc and has erupted 12 times in the past 200 years, according to the observatory. It had minor ash-producing explosions, similar to the current episode, in 2002 and 2004, the observatory said.
The other stirring volcano is Mount Spurr, an 11,070-foot (3,374-meter) peak about 80 miles west of Anchorage.
Spurr last erupted in 1992, but that and other recorded eruptions came from a cone on the south flank of the mountain, slightly below the summit. The current activity is directly beneath the summit, which has not erupted for 5,000 years, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory.
