Cory!! Strode On Graphic Novels
Will Eisner
The passing of Will Eisner has prompted people to e-mail me and ask which of his works would be the best to read, since there is a lot of his work available. DC Comics is reprinting his ground breaking "Spirit" series in perfectly reproduced hard cover volumes, but many of the ones that they have published are from WWII, when Eisner was in the military and only gave ideas to people who worked on the strip.
Eisner started in comics in the 30's, and spent a lot of time doing comics for places that didn't normally have comics. He published "The Spirit", which was a weekly comic book that was distributed with newspapers, did countless comic strips for the military in P.S. Magazine, and in 1978, published what is considered to be the first graphic novel "A Contract With God And Other Tenement Stories". Through it all, Eisner had a realistic style of drawing that was emulated by countless artists in the 50's and 60's, including many artists who worked for Mad Magazine, comic strips and newspaper advertising. He is best known for his storytelling, being able to show through drawing movement, action and place. Most of his "Spirit" stories have the character's name as part of the background, setting the scene and mood for the rest of the story. Eisner's gift was that anyone could read his work, even if they had never read a comic book before, and he pulled the reader from panel to panel effortlessly, simply by his use of art.
Eisner had already shown in previous works that he was not a Golden Age artist from the 40's, trying to bask in past glories. Instead, he was a creator who was still growing, and still showing that comics didn't have to be a medium for simple stories, but could be home to any kind of fiction.
I think the best book for someone to pick up to see Eisner's talent is "The Dreamer". First published in 1986, it is a loose collection of stories, all centering around the early days of the comic book industry. The protagonist, who is drawn much like a young Eisner, begins work in a comic art factory where artists put together quick comics for publishers who couldn't get enough comic books out on the market in the wake of the success of Superman. The stories are barely fictionalized, and people who know about the early days of comics can quickly figure out who each character is supposed to be, but Eisner's genius in the story is that he merely uses these stories as a backdrop to tell a deeply personal story of an artist who is pursuing a dream, and the people he meets along the way. Some characters share his dream, some have different dreams, and others simply want to squeeze as much money as they can out of the "comic book fad" and move on to the next publishing scheme.
In 56 pages, Eisner tells a story that inspires anyone who has an artistic or creative vision without becoming a "Rah, rah, you can do it!" exercise in boosterism. I tend to go back and read this comic every few months, and like all great works of art, I get something new from it every time I read it.
When I read the Pulitzer Prize winning "Adventures of Cavalier and Clay", which also covers the early days of comic books, I was struck again at how much better Eisner was as imparting the feel of the era, and told a much better story in only 56 pages. Other people would point to other Eisner books as call them his best, and critically, I'd be hard pressed to disagree, but if you want to feel the emotional connection Eisner had to his art, "The Dreamer" is your best bet, and in a fair world, Michael Chabon would have had to share his Pulitzer with Eisner.

Dear Mr. Gonzales, You have been rewarded for your unflinching loyalty to George W. Bush with a nomination for Attorney General of the United States. As White House Counsel, you have walked in lockstep with the President. As Attorney General, you will be charged with representing all the people of the United States. Your performance before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday verified that you will continue to be a yes-man for Bush once you are confirmed. In the face of interrogation by members of the Committee, you waffled, equivocated, lied, feigned lack of memory, and even remained silent, in the face of the most probing questions. Your refusals to answer prompted Senator Patrick Leahy to say, "Mr. Gonzales, I'd almost think that you'd served in the Senate, you've learned how to filibuster so well."
Preserving Democracy: What Went Wrong in Ohio
Status Report of the House Judiciary Committee Democratic Staff
The misallocation of voting machines led to unprecedented long lines that disenfranchised scores, if not hundreds of thousands, of predominantly minority and Democratic voters. This was illustrated by the fact that the Washington Post reported that in Franklin County, "27 of the 30 wards with the most machines per registered voter showed majorities for Bush. At the other end of the spectrum, six of the seven wards with the fewest machines delivered large margins for Kerry." (See Powell and Slevin, supra). Among other things, the conscious failure to provide sufficient voting machinery violates the Ohio Revised Code which requires the Boards of Elections to "provide adequate facilities at each polling place for conducting the election."
ROGER EBERT: "Million Dollar" critics' group picks its 2004 baby
Not all movie awards are created equal. Countless groups bestow their praise on each year's movies, no doubt stirred by honorable motives, as well as a desire to influence the Oscars and get publicity. The Golden Globes are no doubt the best-known of the pre-Oscars, but not necessarily the most respected. For respect, the top of the field is occupied, I think, by the National Society of Film Critics and the American Film Institute.

Purple Gene Reviews
'Million Dollar Baby'
with *MAJOR SPOILER*
Purple Genes' review of the movie "Million Dollar Baby" (2004) Directed by Clint Eastwood:
You've come a long way baby!!! You too Clint !! The Baby I'm speaking of is Hilary Swank in the new movie "Million Dollar Baby".
Does anyone remember a movie back in 1994 called "The Next Karate Kid"? It was the fourth installment in the Karate Kid Franchise that originally starred a prepubescent and perky Ralph Macchio. Well Ralph grew up and his balls dropped after "Karate Kid III" so they Switched the genre and the gender to a girl…..Julie, played by a new young actress named Hillary Swank, was looking for a martial arts trainer .
Old Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) filled the bill for his last Karate Kid adventure…training a girl. Well, that girl went on to pick up an OSCAR for playing a girl playing a boy in "Boys Don't Cry" (1999). Guess What?????? She's gonna get another OSCAR for her performance in the new movie "Million Dollar Baby" !!!!!!!!
Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood - "Rawhide" - "Dirty Harry" - "The Outlaw Josie Wales" and Preacher in "The Unforgiven") is a knarly old boxing cut-man/trainer who runs a gym called the "Hit Pit". One of his former boxers, Eddie Dupris (Morgan Freeman - Hoke in "Driving Miss Daisy" - Red in "Shawshank Redemption" - Dr. Alex Cross in "Kiss the Girls") hangs around the gym and helps out. We have the usual boxing bums and wanna be's at the gym sparing and joking and hoping for a break. In walks a thirty something ex trailer trash part time waitress named Maggie (Hilary Swank) and she's looking for a trainer! She Goes right up to Frankie and asks him. He says, "I don't train no girls"!!
Maggie is determined and spends all her spare time banging the bags. Late one night From his little bed in the back, Eddie hears someone pounding away….he gets up and looks and it's Maggie hitting leather….Well Eddie notices something…. Maggie has a great right HOOK!! So Eddie tells Frankie and Frankie watches her a little and then tells her, "I'll get you a couple a fights"! Maggie says, "Thanks BOSS"! So Maggies' first fight…..Ding the bell rings for the first round….Maggie throws 2 left jabs and boom a right hook…1st round KO…..Maggies second fight…. First round ….boom right hook…1st round KO……third fight….first round…boom right hook….1st round KO…..Maggie says to Farnkie, "How'm I doin' Boss?" Frankie says, "Don't ask me no questions"! Frankie was having a hard time getting Maggie more fights because she was kicking everyones ass….in the first Round!!!!!! So Frankie starts to make some deals to keep Maggie goin'. Four, five, six, seven more incredible fights and Frankie gets Maggie a title shot. Frankie also manages to get a 50/50 split of the million dollar prize! Maggies opponent in the championship fight is the dreaded, dirty fighting Billie the "Blue Bear".
Stop here & scroll down to that Mad Cat, JD, if you don't want to know the 'twist'!
*MAJOR SPOILER ALERT*
Chiseled jaw, tight corn rows and a snarling sneer. The Bear charges Maggie as the bell rings for the 1st Round. But Maggie is not intimidated and rocks the Bear with 2 jabs and an upper cut. 2nd round …same thing…..3rd round same Thing…… but after the bell rings the Bear delivers a wicked elbow to Maggies' back sending her down….the Ref threatens to take a point away if the Bear Does it again. The next four rounds Maggie is still dominating and again after the bell ending the 7th round, the Bear throws another elbow into Maggies' back. The referee takes that point away. Frankie says to Maggie, "Protect yourself at all times"! Going into the eight round the Bear realizes she can't beat Maggie fair And square…so after the bell…boom a wicked punch to Maggies' back that sends her sprawling into the chair……a crushes her neck…….. Maggie is in a coma for 5 days and when she comes to she finds out she is totally paralyzed from the neck down.
This movie takes an amazing turn and I was torn up by the situation…Frankie has found the daughter that he had lost long ago and Maggie found the dad that she never had. We follow Frankie every day sitting in the hospital with Maggie. Then she has a leg amputated ..she's getting worse. She begs Frankie, "Boss, help me end this!" Maggie feels like bacteria in a dish ……she tries to kill herself by biting her tongue off. The nurse stop the bleeding and gives her drugs…..Frankie goes to see his priest who tells him "You will lose your soul if you help this girl!" Frankie struggles ….Maggie suffers…..Frankie finally shows up and disconnects Maggie's air, gives her a shot of adrenilin and holds her hand as she passes heroically to a peaceful place……… This whole movie was narrated by Morgan Freeman as Eddie and his voice was the vehicle that filled in the story. Eddie says no one ever saw Frankie at the Gym again. He just disappeared. Eddie thinks that Frankie took that $½ million from the fight …the money that Maggie made sure he got by refusing to sign it over to her trailer trash mom…..Yeah, Eddie thiks that Frankie took that money and bought that little diner that Maggie showed him…the one that had the best lemon pie in the world.
This movie floored me……Incredible screenplay, efficient and economical editing, gritty and graphic filming, absolutely amazing acting and directing.
This is a classic creation that is better than anything else I've seen this year. Better than "Finding Neverland". Better than the "Aviator"…..Best Movie? Purple Gene gives "Million Dollar Baby" 10 jabs to the gut out of 10 for knocking me out!!!

Odd Couple Exchange Praise
Mel Gibson & Michael Moore
Mel Gibson and Michael Moore have been used as shorthand for cultural and political divisions among Americans, but how do the filmmakers feel about each other? Cue the Hollywood ending - it's hugs all around.
"I saw the film. I liked it," Gibson told AP Radio Sunday at the 31st Annual People's Choice Awards, countering the contention that "Fahrenheit 9/11" fans and "The Passion of the Christ" enthusiasts are mutually exclusive groups.
Moore said he saw Gibson's film twice, and even took his father to see it.
"I thought it was a powerful piece of filmmaking," Moore told AP Radio Sunday. "I'm a practicing Catholic, and you know I think Mel and I may be from different wings of the Catholic Church. My film might have been called 'The Compassion of the Christ.'"

Black 'Florence Nightingale'
Mary Seacole
The only known oil painting of nurse Mary Seacole, known as the black Florence Nightingale, went on show at London's National Portrait Gallery Monday after being lost for years.
Seacole, born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1805 of a white Scottish father and a mixed race mother, not only overcame the treatment of women as inferiors but also the open racism of the era to make her way to the Crimea and nurse wounded soldiers.
Unlike her contemporary Florence Nightingale, deemed to be the founder of modern nursing, Seacole was shunned by the British government when she offered her services as a nurse during the Crimean War.
Undaunted, Seacole, who learned her basic nursing from her mother and added to her knowledge through extensive traveling, paid her own way to the Crimea in 1854.

Do you have a great album no one's heard?
How about a favorite TV show, movie, book, play, cartoon, or legal amusement?
A popular artist that just plain pisses you off?
A box set the whole world should own?
Vile, filthy rumors about Republican musicians?
Just plain vile, filthy rumors?
This is your place.
(In other words, submissions are welcome.)
