Sanford Pinsker: How Dangerous Are David Horowitz's 101 Most Dangerous American Academics? (irascibleprofessor.com)
If you happen to be an academic positioned somewhere on the Left, David Horowitz can be, well, a pain. He is, among other things, a relentless scold, and an indefatigable self promoter. During the early l970s Horowitz was not only a member of the New Left, but, he insists, one of its founders. In any event, his tell-all memoir, Radical Son (l997), makes it clear that he once lived in the belly of the beast, and that his politics have moved l80 degrees from where it once was.
Mark Morford: I Am Done With Violence (sfgate.com)
I have no idea if I can succeed. I have no idea if it's possible to reject, minimize, slough off the disgusting allure of violence in our culture, the delirious buffet of cruelty in the world. I have no idea if it will not eventually beat me down once again. I only know, at this point, that few other things seem as worthy of trying.

George Clooney, winner of the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in "Syriana" has donated his decadent Oscar gift bag to the United Way, a spokeswoman for the organization said Wednesday.
The loot will be sold in an online auction to benefit the United Way Hurricane Response and Relief Recovery Fund, said spokeswoman Sheila Consaul. Clooney is a member of the charity's board of trustees, she said.
The gift bag given to presenters at the 78th Annual Academy Awards includes a BlackBerry 8700c, a Kay Unger kimono and a cultured Tahitian-pearl necklace, among other items.
The winning bidder will also receive a handwritten thank-you note from Clooney acknowledging the donation to hurricane relief, Consaul said.

Two months after jumping to satellite radio, shock jock Howard Stern took his feud with his former bosses to their own airwaves in a late-night TV rant against CBS Corp. chief Leslie Moonves, calling him "one of the biggest jerks on the planet."
Appearing Monday on CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman," Stern stepped up his recent campaign in the media to defend himself against a breach-of-contract suit brought by CBS last month seeking hundreds of millions of dollars from the ribald radio host.
What made Stern's latest diatribe so unusual was that it was conducted on Moonves' own network during a celebrity guest spot promoted by CBS for several days.

American author Katherine Paterson was named Wednesday the winner of the annual Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for Literature.
The $640,000 prize, established by the Swedish government, is the biggest international award dedicated to writers of children's books.
The award was named for the beloved Swedish children's author whose Pippi Longstocking, a strong-willed girl with braided hair, freckles and mismatched stockings, captivated generations of children around the world. Lindgren died in 2002.
Paterson was born in 1932 in China. Her family moved to the United States during World War II. She produced religious texts written for the Presbyterian church, which later led to her becoming a children's author.
Concerned about politicizing her favorite charity, singer-actress Jessica Simpson on Wednesday turned down a invitation to meet with U.S. President George W. Bush, a snub that left Republicans dismayed.
The apparent final word that Simpson would be a no-show at a major Republican fund-raiser with Bush and congressional leaders on Thursday night came after a day of conflicting reports from her camp and organizers of the event.
The blond star of the film "The Dukes of Hazzard" still plans to visit Washington on Thursday to lobby members of Congress on behalf of Operation Smile, a non-profit venture offering free plastic surgery for disadvantaged children overseas with facial deformities.
People close to Simpson said she declined a request to appear that same evening at the gala fund-raiser of the National Republican Congressional Committee -- even after she was offered some private face time with Bush -- because Operation Smile is a non-partisan group.

Five Gustav Klimt paintings that were stolen by the Nazis during the Second World War have been sent to a California museum, officials said Wednesday.
Among the paintings is the gold-flecked Adele Bloch-Bauer I, one of Klimt's most famous works. It has an estimated value of $120 million US.
"The pictures are on the way," Klaus Pokorny, spokesman for the Austrian Gallery Belvedere, said Wednesday.
The Vienna castle had displayed the works until an arbitration court ruled earlier this year that they must be returned to Maria Altmann of Beverly Hills and other heirs of the Jewish family that owned the paintings before the Nazis took over Austria in 1938.

Australian mineral dealer Tamas 'Thomas' Kapitany pleaded guilty Wednesday, March 15, to charges stemming from an ICE investigation that he illegally imported hundreds of fossilized dinosaur eggs from China to sell at gem and mineral shows throughout the southwest U.S.

Movie director Rob Reiner said Tuesday he does not regret that a state commission he chairs spent $23 million in taxpayer money for an ad campaign that coincided with his promotion of a preschool ballot initiative.
Reiner helped create the California First 5 Commission, a state agency that uses tobacco taxes for early childhood development programs. The television commercials lauded the benefits of preschool and aired from early November until mid-January, when Proposition 82 qualified for the June ballot. The Reiner-supported measure would create free universal preschool by raising taxes on the wealthy.
State law prohibits the use of public funds for campaign activities.
In this photo released by the Newseum, the CONUS 1 satellite truck is lowered by a crane into what will be the new home of the museum dedicated to journalism and the First Amendment, the Newseum, in Washington, D.C., Wednesday, March 15, 2006. The truck transformed local television news in 1984 by allowing stations to cover national stories without depending on the major networks. The building is far from finished, but Newseum curators installed their first artifact Wednesday _ an item so big they'll put up the rest of the museum around it.

A government crackdown on indecent programming resulted in a proposed fine of $3.6 million against dozens of CBS stations and affiliates on Wednesday - a record penalty from the Federal Communications Commission.
The FCC said an episode of the CBS crime drama "Without a Trace" that aired in December 2004 was indecent. It cited the graphic depiction of "teenage boys and girls participating in a sexual orgy."
Rejecting an appeal by CBS, the FCC also upheld its previous $550,000 fine against 20 of the network's stations for the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" at the Super Bowl two years ago.
Other fines were proposed for broadcasts that included an episode of "The Surreal Life 2" on The WB and an episode of a Spanish-language talk show, the "Fernando Hidalgo Show," on a Miami station.
