The Enron Employee Guide
'Code of Ethics'
'Code of Ethics,' an Enron employee guide now framed and on display as part of an unusual art display put together
by employees of the fallen energy giant is seen in downtown Houston, January 30, 2002. Congressional investigators
planned unprecedented court action to try to find out what role Enron and others played in developing the White House's
energy plan, as the fallout mounted from the energy trader's spectacular failure.

In The Chaos Household
Last Night
Watched most of 'Enterprise'. For some reason, an old Dr. Demento song was stuck in my
head and 'Klingons on the starboard bow' kept looping, relentlessly. (We come in peace, shoot to kill...)
Really should start taking notes...most of the time I think I'll remember details, but, when I get to this point,
I seldom do.
Tonight, Thursday, CBS starts the evening with 'The Price Is Right 30th Anniversary' which was
taped (and nearly caused a riot) in Las Vegas a couple of weeks back. It's followed by fresh episodes of
'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' and 'The Agency'.
NBC has a fresh 'Friends', followed by a rerun 'Friends', and then the rest of the night is
fresh with 'Will & Grace' (where Rosie O'Donnell is Jack's kid's mom), 'Just Shoot Me' and 'ER'.
ABC has a rerun 'Whose Line' followed by a fresh evening, with more 'Whose Line?' and the conclusion
of 'Rose Red'.
The WB has a rerun 'Charmed', followed by a fresh 'Charmed'.
Faux has a fresh 'Family Guy', followed by a rerun 'Family Guy', and then 'Fornication Island'.
UPN has 'WWF Smackdown!'.
AMC has 2 musicals, 'The King And I' (with Yul Brynner) and 'Bye Bye Birdie' (which I really like...
between Paul Lynde and the song 'Ed Sullivan'....). It is followed by 'American Hot Wax' which was
Jay Leno's big screen debut, and also has Lorraine Newman, pre-nose job.

Nordic Gloom. That's the name Carl Hiaasen would give his rock band. If he had one. The name of his would-be

the jabs he takes at self-importance in the pop music industry in his latest novel, "Basket Case." Carl Hiaasen

Backing The Wrong Pony?
Mayor Rudy
Former Mayor Rudy seems to have backed the wrong horse in his first political foray since leaving office. Even
Giuliani's national hero status hasn't done much for the candidate he's been backing in the Californian GOP
gubernatorial primary.
Polls show that Rudy's guy, Bill Simon (son of the late federal treasury secretary), is badly trailing Dick Riordan
as the March contest looms. Rudy apparently went with Simon rather than supporting his fellow former mayor (of L.A.)
Riordan because of a long family friendship.

Movie Musicals Into Stage Plays
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.
If film studio MGM has its way, ``Rocky: the Musical'' may just be Broadway's next big hit, rivaling Brooks' current smash
''The Producers'' as the hottest ticket in town.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. said Wednesday it has launched a new initiative under long-time business and legal executive Darcie
Denkert to develop new products, starting with Broadway shows, from its huge library of old films.
Already in development, the studio said, are stage plays based on comedies like ``The Pink Panther'' films from the 1960s
and 1970s, which will be produced by Blake Edwards. Actor John Lithgow is set to star in a version of 1957's ``Sweet Smell
of Success,'' and stage versions of romances ``Marty'' and ''Moonstruck'' are being worked on, an MGM spokeswoman said.
MGM is not the first studio to look to Broadway for new business. The Walt Disney Co. has turned hit animated movies such
as ``The Lion King'' and ``Beauty and the Beast'' into stage plays both on Broadway and in touring companies.
Brooks wrote and directed ``The Producers,'' the 1968 film about a washed-up theater producer and his accountant who set
out to bilk money from investors by making a Broadway flop.
The director of such classic film comedies as ``Blazing Saddles'' put the story on stage, and it became one of Broadway's
biggest recent hits, starring Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane.

Washington's Biggest Ever Media Buy
Super Bowl
In Washington's biggest ever media buy, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy will spend
about $3.4 million to air two spots during Super Bowl plugging the message that the illegal drug trade feeds terrorism.
The Super Bowl has long been used by corporate America to debut the best of the best commercials. This time around, however,
some financially skittish companies have elected to take a pass, even though the going buy rate -- $1.7 million to $2 million
for 30 seconds -- is down slightly from last year.
The anti-drug office is paying about $1.7 million for each 30-second spot, industryites confirmed. That's the most anyone
remembers the government shelling out for commercial air time.
In exchange, Fox Broadcasting Co. will give the White House matching free time on other programs -- just not the Super Bowl.
Washington's Biggest Ever Media Buy
So, Rupert's trolls at Faux can't sell the advertising time at a rate to suit his avaricious nature, so rather than
sell it cheaper, or 'work', the 'White House' will pick up the slack....another form of an Enron End-Run'?
Back when the citizens still owned the airwaves, these kind of ads were considered 'Public Service Announcements', and
stations were more than encouraged to air them - FOR FREE!!! It worked very well. But, deregulation happens, and
then the Rupert really hit the fan...
U2, Paul McCartney, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Marc Anthony, Barry Manilow, Patti LaBelle, Wynonna, Boston Pops...and more!
Super Bowl Entertainment Package
The lineup of musical acts at this year's Super Bowl is so long that you might think the football game was the sideshow.
The National Football League says it will be the most entertainment-packed Super Bowl ever, with performances by U2,
Paul McCartney, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Marc Anthony and others - not just on Super Bowl Sunday, but throughout the weekend.
McCartney is expected to sing his Sept. 11-inspired song ``Freedom'' during the pre-game show, which will also feature
Barry Manilow singing ``Let Freedom Ring'' with Patti LaBelle, Wynonna and others. Carey will sing the national anthem
and Blige and Anthony will sing ``America the Beautiful,'' all of them backed by the Boston Pops. U2 is to provide the
halftime entertainment, singing three songs, including the inspirational ``Walk On.''
Besides patriotism, the strong star presence also reflects a growing trend at major sporting events toward partnering music
with sports to boost the ratings and broaden the audience of both.
It wasn't until Michael Jackson's ratings-grabbing performance at the 1993 halftime show that A-list performers started taking notice.
``That was the turning point in securing major entertainment stars to perform,'' McCarthy said, adding that the potentially
huge audience was a powerful lure to musicians. The Super Bowl is generally seen by an average of 90 million viewers in the United States.

Lawyer-Turned-New Yorker Writer
Jeffrey Toobin
The legal world just missed the chance to see lawyer-turned-New Yorker writer Jeffrey Toobin back in action. Toobin,
who was a federal prosecutor during the Iran-Contra brouhaha, hasn't tried a case in nearly a decade. But he was
set to come out of retirement to defend a comely magazine colleague, also a writer, charged with jumping a subway
turnstile. When she realized how much attention his involvement could bring to her alleged transgression, however,
the simmering scribe decided to plead guilty, and paid a $60 fine. Too bad: "She had an iron-clad defense," says Toobin.

Pushing Polish Pasta
Sophia Loren
Poland's second-largest pasta maker is hoping an endorsement from Italian superstar Sophia Loren will make it No. 1
among Polish palates.
``Sophia Loren is a symbol of great Italian taste, and she has repeatedly said she owes her great looks to pasta,'' said
Robert Mrozinski, general manager of Danuta SA, maker of the Malma brand of macaroni.
Loren, 67, was expected to arrive in Poland late Tuesday to shoot a TV commercial at the medieval Teutonic Knights
castle in the northern city of Malbork. She will be shown leaving a ball and telling reporters what she likes
best about Poland, including Malma pasta.

Attracting Musical Talent
Ally McBeal
It began with a bar and a bluesy vocalist playing to ``Ally McBeal'' and her lawyer friends.
Then Al Green sang, danced and acted his way through an episode, and everything changed.
Musical guests began lining up to take their shot on the show, which airs 9 p.m. Mondays on Fox. The list includes Barry
White, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and Gloria Gaynor.
Singer-songwriter Vonda Shepard has gotten the most exposure of any musical performer on the show, singing or producing
some 400 songs over the last five seasons. (She's the pianist-singer at the lounge where Ally and her friends hang out.)
She wrote and performed the show's theme song ``Searchin' My Soul,'' which became a hit on radio, and she's released
four ``Ally McBeal'' compilation albums, including the multiplatinum ``Songs From Ally McBeal.''

''Exploding: the Highs, Hits, Hype, Heroes and Hustlers of the Warner Music Group''
Stan Cornyn
Grammy Award winner Stan Cornyn remembers the riotous days of the record business, when corporate politics was a thing of the future and sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll was still a true mantra.
An executive for more than 30 years for Warner Bros. Records, Cornyn helped the careers of music stars such as
Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, the Doors, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, Madonna and Lil' Kim, to name a few. Now he's
spilling the wild and sexy behind-the-scene stories in his upcoming book, "Exploding: the Highs, Hits, Hype,
Heroes and Hustlers of the Warner Music Group."
The Faces were barred from so many hotels — including the entire Holiday Inn chain — that the Warner act had to
frequently check in under the name "Fleetwood Mac."
After David Geffen won the heated battle with Atlantic's Jerry Wexler to sign Bob Dylan, Geffen needled Wexler at
an executive meeting, where Wexler exploded: "David, why don't you just shut up? You don't know a thing about music.
You're nothing but an agent. You'd stick your head in a bucket of pus to come up with a nickel in your teeth."
Years later, when Geffen sold Geffen Records to MCA for more than half a billion dollars, he noted how music had
changed from when he founded Asylum records: "I don't like the music, and I don't like the people."

'Lead' Or 'Supporting' Actress?

Universal doesn't ``Mind'' nomination error
We goofed but everything seems to have worked out fine -- that's what Universal Pictures admitted Tuesday after
nominations were announced for the SAG Awards, including Jennifer Connelly in the lead actress category for ``A Beautiful Mind.''
Connelly recently won a Golden Globe in the supporting actress category for her role as the long-suffering wife
of Russell Crowe's lead character.
On Tuesday, Universal explained it had made a clerical error in listing her as a lead on the official submission form,
and the studio noted that SAG voters did not seem particularly fazed.

Bemoaning 'There's No Children's Day'
Michael Jackson
Pop star Michael Jackson thinks children are so cool that the world should set aside an annual holiday to celebrate them.
``There's a Mother's Day and there's a Father's Day, but there's no Children's Day,'' he said in the upcoming
cover story of Vibe magazine.
Jackson, 43, who has two children of his own, paid a multimillion-dollar settlement in early 1994 to resolve an
accusation of child molestation. He often surrounds himself with tykes, and buses in terminally ill children to
play at his sprawling Neverland Valley ranch north of Los Angeles.
On life as a single parent of five-year-old son Prince and three-year-old daughter Paris, Jackson said he has never
had so much fun in his life.
``Because I am this big kid, and now I get to see the world through the eyes of the really young ones. I learn more
from them than they learn from me.''

Did 'The View' Get To Her?
Carol Channing
"Hello, Dolly" legend Carol Channing is recovering in Lennox Hill Hospital after getting sick backstage yesterday
before a scheduled appearance on "The View." Channing, who turns 81 tomorrow, is suffering from a virus and is
expected to remain in the hospital "for a day or two," according to her publicist.
Channing never made it onto the air. She first became ill in the limousine transporting her to "The View" studios
and made it to the backstage dressing-room area before becoming ill again. Producers at "The View" decided that
she should be taken to the hospital, rather than being transported via limousine back to her hotel.

Kid Rock
Kid Rock is a man with simple tastes.
Cable television's Burly Bear Network, dedicated to college audiences ages 18 to 24, asked the rocker what keeps him
grounded and the answer wasn't complicated.
"I don't really have any secrets, just that some things you can't change, and you are who you are and I just try to
be that person and I guess that's my words of wisdom, if that equals wisdom in any way," the Detroit native said.
"You know, when I started I liked Big Macs and Budweiser and I still like Big Macs and Budweiser. I am happy to make
money. I want to make more money, make more music, eat Big Macs and drink Budweisers."
Kid Rock was also asked about life these days. "It's a very fun stage of my life, but I'm actually looking forward
to getting old, getting bald, getting fat, sitting around talking garbage all day, telling the kids what it's all
about, you know kicking back and enjoying life," the rocker said.

Diahann Carroll has joined the cast of ``The Court,'' a drama slated to premiere on ABC this spring.
Billed as a special guest star, she will appear in the first six episodes of the legal series in the role of
a liberal Supreme Court justice.
The cast, led by Sally Field, also includes Craig Bierko, as a reporter covering the justices; Miguel Sandoval
and Chris Sarandon as judges; and Pat Hingle as the chief justice.
Carroll's best-known TV roles were those on ``Julia'' and ``Dynasty.'' In taking on the title character for ``Julia''
in 1968, she became the first black actress to star in her own TV series.

New Broadway Musical?
``The Body Ventura''
Maverick Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, a former pro wrestler, is helping to shape the script and songs for a planned
Broadway musical about his life, the governor's office said Wednesday.
The flamboyant populist, who has written two books since his surprise 1998 election victory and previously co-starred
in Hollywood action movies, has provided ``some input'' to librettist and lyricist Stephen Dolginoff in creating ``The
Body Ventura,'' destined for a Broadway stage, said spokesman John Wodele.
Ventura provided the composer with details about his upbringing and his relationship with his wife, Terry, which shaped
such songs as ``You're Different,'' ``The Heart is a Muscle'' and ``Do You Like the Rolling Stones?'' the online magazine said.
The musical will explore Ventura's youthful ambitions in the song ``Take the World by Storm,'' his stint as a Navy SEAL
in ''Hooyah,'' the launch of his wrestling career as Jesse The Body in ``Sign with Me.'' It will also depict his brand
of politics in the tune ``Retaliate in '98.''
There is no word yet on who will portray the hulking, raspy-voiced governor in the production.

Airline Says In-Flight Toilet Ordeal Story False
(airline says report was false; Jan. 22 story withdrawn)
A spokeswoman for Scandinavian Airline System (SAS) said a report of a woman being stuck on an airplane toilet was false.
The original report said a woman had filed a complaint with SAS after her ordeal on a Boeing 767 flight last year. The
woman supposedly got sucked in after pushing the flush button while seated, activating a system to clean the toilet by vacuum.
The SAS spokeswoman said internal checks had since shown that the company's original information was false.
``We regret that we presented the story as true,'' she said.

New Digital Videotape Format
D-VHS
Four Hollywood film studios said Wednesday they will start selling movies in a new digital videotape format, D-VHS,
designed for high-end home theater systems equipped with a player from Japanese electronics company, JVC.
The JVC system, called D-theater, is not made to compete with the lower-priced digital video disc (DVD) format. DVD,
adopted by electronics makers over the past five years, has become a mass market product for playing movies in digital formats.
Instead, D-VHS is targeted to a relatively small group of home theater owners with new high-definition television sets
and the JVC player, who desire crisper and clearer digital pictures.
Universal Studios, the movie-making wing of media giant Vivendi Universal, is one studio backing the D-VHS format. Other studios
pledging to make D-VHS video are News Corp. Ltd. unit Twentieth Century Fox, DreamWorks and Artisan Entertainment, primarily a
maker of small-budget movies but a large player in home video.
The studios expect to first release high-action thrillers, such as ``Independence Day,'' or the ``Terminator'' and ``Rambo''
series for the D-theater systems, which were among the first types of movies to capture sales from early adopters of DVD.
One D-VHS cassette has the maximum capacity to record and playback 4 hours of high definition television or more than 50 hours
of standard definition television. JVC's high definition recorder also gives consumers the flexibility to record and play
back in analog VHS and other video formats.

Tom Cruise
Actor Tom Cruise, an outspoken adherent of the Church of Scientology, has lobbied the U.S. ambassador to fight for the
group's rights in Germany, where it is not recognized, diplomats said Wednesday.
Germany refuses to recognize Scientology as a church, saying it masquerades as a religion to make money. Scientologists
are barred from government jobs in some parts of the country.
In the January issue of the U.S.-based magazine Vanity Fair, Cruise credited his 13-year devotion to Scientology with
helping him deal with adversities from dyslexia to his estrangement from his late father to persistent rumors that he is gay.
Cruise was in Germany on a promotional tour for his latest film ``Vanilla Sky'' with his lover and co-star Penelope Cruz.

Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson is finally talking about his Sept. 11 experience. It's safe to say that it wasn't like yours.
Even though he was in New York, having performed the night before at Madison Square Garden, the Pop Princeling says
he learned about the attack on the twin towers and the Pentagon "from friends in Saudi Arabia." (Jackson's investment
partnership with Saudi billionaire Prince al-Waleed bin Talal bin Abdulazi is said to have withered, but maybe
they were talking at the time.)
Jackson showed his trademark cool: "I screamed down the hotel hallway to all our people, 'Everybody get out, let's
leave now!'" Jackson tells Vibe magazine. The hotel was not named.
"Marlon Brando was on one end [of the hotel], our security was on the other end," Jackson says, describing a scene
out of a "Saturday Night Live" sketch. "But Elizabeth Taylor was at another hotel."
Jacko and his entourage finally piled into a car and headed for New Jersey.

Michael P. Hammond
President Bush's pick to head the National Endowment for the Arts was found dead on Tuesday, one week
after beginning the job.
Michael P. Hammond, a 69-year-old composer-conductor who devoted his long career to music education,
appeared to have died of natural causes, although the medical examiner has not yet ruled on the
exact cause of death, administration officials said.
Hammond had been unwell Monday with flu-like symptoms.
When nominated by Bush last year to serve as Washington's top arts advocate, Hammond was dean of the Shepherd
School of Music at Rice University in Houston. He also was a founding dean of music for a new arts campus at
the State University of New York in Purchase. He founded the Pepsico Summerfare, a major international
arts festival in Purchase.
Hammond is survived by his wife, Anne, and a son, Thomas, an actor in New York.
