Purple Gene Reviews
Green Day at Bill Graham Auditorium
Purple Genes' KINDA Review of Green Day at Bill Graham Auditorium in SF:
So, Green Day has this new album out called "American Idiot" with the title song "American Idiot" and they had a show at the Bill Graham Auditorium in San Francisco.
I remember these guys playing at this DUMP in Berkeley in the 80s called Gilman St., shitty little garage punk slacker hole in the wall.......These dudes worked hard and performed hard and fuckin' thrashed hard .....and they could play and write shit!!!!!!!
They put a song out a while back called "Good Riddance (the time of your life)" - at the show on Wednesday, after the crash and lights and loudness, Billy Joe came out alone and sang this song with his electric guitar.....................KILLER..........I haven't seen such beauty in the midst of chaos in a long time.
Go to Las Vegas on December 7th to the "JOINT" and they will play the whole new album "American Idiot" LIVE.
Green Days' live version of their old song "Good Riddance (time of your life)" gets 10 cigarette lighters out of 10!!

The Luster Is Gone
Hollywood Christmas Parade
The biggest stars at the Hollywood Christmas Parade this year will be the marble ones under the feet of spectators. The annual parade, which winds past the Hollywood Walk of Fame, was once a tradition as rich and famous as the celebrities who graced its floats: Jimmy Stewart, Bob Hope, Mary Pickford and Gregory Peck, to name a few.
But the event's cachet has declined so much in recent years that the Hollywood personality generating the most excitement for the 73rd parade on Sunday is a cartoon character - SpongeBob SquarePants.
The history of the parade is as storied as Hollywood itself.
The first, called the Santa Claus Lane Parade, was staged in 1928 by merchants who wanted to drum up holiday business on Hollywood Boulevard. It consisted of a sleigh on wheels pulled by two live reindeer, with starlet Jeanette Loff on board.
In 1946, Gene Autry heard the children along the parade route shouting for Santa Claus and was inspired to write the holiday classic "Here Comes Santa Claus." The parade has been held every year except for 1930 and three years during World War II.

Live Recordings Unearthed
William Kapell
More than three hours of newly unearthed performances by iconic pianist William Kapell, who died at age 31 in a 1953 plane crash, are creating an enormous stir.
The recordings, made on three acetates, were done by a devoted music fan named Roy Preston in Melbourne, Australia. Working in his home, Preston recorded Kapell's concerts as they were transmitted by the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
As his health declined later in life, Preston gave his treasure trove to his friend Maurice Austin, who last month turned over the recordings to Kapell's widow, Dr. Anna Lou Kapell-Dehavenon.

Welsh Stars
Welsh stars past and present took center stage at the opening of a glittering new concert hall in the capital, Cardiff.
The $200 million slate, glass and steel building, "inspired by the landscape and by the industrial and cultural heritage of Wales," includes a 1,900-seat auditorium that will house the Welsh National Opera and facilities for a variety of arts and cultural organizations.
The dockside arts center, nicknamed the Armadillo for its humpbacked shape, symbolizes a newfound cultural confidence for Wales, a principality of 3 million people to the west of England.

Russia Agrees To Visit
Dalai Lama
Russia will allow Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to visit a southern Buddhist Russian region for the first time, the foreign ministry said in a move certain to anger China.
A foreign ministry statement said Friday that the visit to the Kalmykia republic on the Caspian Sea "will be strictly religious in nature."
It was not immediately clear when the visit of the revered 69-year-old Tibetan Buddhist leader would take place, but an unnamed source in Kalmykia told Interfax it could come as soon as Monday.

Returns Stolen Relics
Pope John Paul II
Pope John Paul II returned the relics of two saints stolen during the crusades to the Ecumenical Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, during a mass in Rome.
Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the move was "not a reparation nor a way for the pope to ask pardon in the name of the Catholic Church for taking the relics from the Ecumenical patriarch during the crusade in the 13th century".
The relics, which were to be carried in sealed containers to Istanbul on a special flight on Saturday, belonged to two former church doctors and patriarchs; Saint Gregory of Nazianze and Saint John Chrysostom.

Exits Amid Pay Controversy
Infinity Exec
Infinity Broadcasting is not commenting on a New York Times story that claims the company fired its top Rochester, N.Y., programer for accepting gifts from record companies.
The news comes as another major radio player, Entercom, announces that it will no longer work with independent promoters.
According to the Times, an internal Infinity investigation concluded that John McRae, who oversaw rock WCMF, modern WZNE, top 40 WPXY and adult top 40 WRMM, "had accepted an unspecified sum's worth of gift certificates sent ostensibly for use in listener contests or in station promotions."
Concerns regarding McRae's activities contributed to Infinity's Nov. 17 decision to sever ties with independent promoters, the article said. Before ending relationships with such promoters, Infinity had a policy in place that banned exclusive deals with indies.

L.A. County May Sandblast
Disney Hall
The mirror-like, curving steel walls of the Walt Disney Concert Hall may soon lose some of their luster.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is considering whether to sandblast portions of the walls to reduce glare that has been blamed for blinding drivers and increasing heat in neighboring buildings.
After receiving complaints from a nearby homeowners group, the county hired consultants to work with architect Frank Gehry before the hall's dedication in October 2003 on reducing the glare from the building.
A gray mesh fabric was placed over one curved tower across from the condominium unit as an interim solution. The board will consider a permanent fix in January that involves sandblasting some surfaces to create a duller finish.

Heard of Nauru?
'Geography Olympics'
America may dominate the world in sports and culture but in one arena where size doesn't matter, the "Geography Olympics," the United States was 88th behind minnows such as Madagascar and the Marshall Islands.
More than 46,000 Americans have taken part in this online geography competition started by a man with a mission: Roger Andresen, who quit his job as a fiber optic engineer two years ago when he realized most Americans have never heard of Nauru and don't know Cameroon is in Africa.
Players have 200 seconds to locate 10 randomly selected countries on a map of the world with the names blanked out.
The site (www.geographyolympics.com) has attracted more than 300,000 players from 179 countries so far. National rankings fluctuate throughout the day depending on the latest scores.

In Memory
Ruth Manning
Ruth Manning, a veteran character actress who gained recognition playing Aunt Harriet in Kraft Real Mayonnaise TV ads in the 1980s, has died. She was believed to be 84.
Manning died Nov. 19 of heart failure while auditioning for a television role, said her agent, Greg Mayo.
Born in New York, Manning worked in stock and repertory companies for a decade before making her Broadway debut in 1950 in Robinson Jeffers' "The Tower Beyond Tragedy" and going on to feature roles in "The Prisoner of Second Avenue," "Sticks and Bones" and the musical "Molly."
She also starred in "The Rimers of Eldritch" and productions of "The Iceman Cometh" and Jules Feiffer's "Little Murders."
Manning later moved to film and television with small parts on "Audrey Rose," "Three's Company" and "ER," among others.
But she was best known as bossy Harriet in the 30-second Kraft commercials. The first ad found Harriet admonishing her innocent cohort Aunt Martha, played by Norma MacMillan, after she suggested the two women share the good news of Kraft's delicious taste with a relative.
Manning is survived by two nephews and a niece. A memorial service was planned for January.
