CampusProgress.org: 'Five minutes with: Paul Krugman'
There's a long way back from this very bad place we've gone into, but when I compare the political atmosphere now with the way it was two and a half years ago, it seems that there's been a major return to sanity.

Paul Krugman: Defending Imperial Nudity (The New York Times; posted on truthout.org)
Hans Christian Andersen understood bad rulers. "The Emperor's New Suit" doesn't end with everyone acclaiming the little boy for telling the truth. It ends with the emperor and his officials refusing to admit their mistake.

Frank Rich: The Mysterious Death of Pat Tillman (The New York Times)
Though Tillman himself was so idealistic that he refused publicity of any kind when in the Army, he was exploited by the war's cheerleaders as a recruitment lure and was needed to continue in that role after his death. (Even though he was adamantly against the Iraq war, according to friends and relatives interviewed by The Chronicle.)

ROGER EBERT: Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic
"Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic" is a movie that filled me with an urgent desire to see Sarah Silverman in a different movie. I liked everything about it except the writing, the direction, the editing and the lack of a parent or adult guardian.

Jim Emerson: Can Sarah Silverman say that? (rogerebert.suntimes.com)
After the world premiere screening of "Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic" at the Toronto Film Festival in September, a fan in the audience hailed her as "the true heir to Lenny Bruce." "Wow, thank you, that is the ultimate compliment," she said. "I'm actually not that familiar with Lenny Bruce's work, but from what I understand, he was a really great singer."

Purple Gene Reviews

'Loch Ness'

Purple Gene's review of the movie "Loch Ness" (1996)
Directed by John Henderson:

It was with absurd delight that I set myself up to watch "Loch Ness" 0n KBHK 36 (with commercials - so I could eat lunch and not TIVO)! I had done my research……including "Incident at Loch Ness" (2004) with director Werner Herzog being out directed by Zak Penn - "this fall…there's something in the water"……."Beneath Loch Ness (2001) with Patrick Bergan - "sixty feet of prehistoric terror"……"Lake Placid" (1999) with Bill Pullman and Bridget Fonda - "You'll never know what bit you"….."Creature" (1998) with Craig T. Nelson and Kim Cattrall……even "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" with Richard Denning and Julie Adams - "Not since the beginning of time has the world beheld terror like this"……But what did I get??????

"Whale Rider" (2002) meets "The Secret of Roan Inish" (1994) !!!!!!!

OK - OK….. what we get is a kinder and gentler Loch Ness "Monster" !!!! Sure …..a love story set in the idyllic Scottish countryside….and most importantly…. Jim Henson's "Creature Shop" involved in "Nessie's" make-up …and, just for us romantics, Rod Stewart singing the "theme" song…"I left my Heart in Loch Ness, Scotland"!!!!! Not really…..I'm just joking…he does sing the sugary "happy ending" ditty called "Rhythm of the Heart" though.

Doctor Jonathon Dempsey (Ted Danson - "Cheers" (1982) with Kirstie Alley and Shelley Long - "Made in America" (1993) with Whoopi Goldberg - "Pontiac Man" (1994) with Mary Steenbergen) is a hack, a has been, and a hoax hunting Anthropology Professor demoted to swilling whiskey at 11 AM…he's got bills, foreclosures and a three day beard. His last adventure/debacle turned out to be a "no show" "Yeti" in the great Northwest….With his reputation gone and his pride missing, he gets asked by his Superior to fly over to Scotland to debunk the whole Loch Ness Monster thing with Sonar, and computer imaging equipment. So off he flies to Bonnie Scotland…..

In a preposterously predictable sub plot, Dr "J" checks in at the Moffat Arms Inn on the edge of the Loch and is greeted by the owner, Laura McFetridge (Joely Richardson - Sis of Natasha Richardson - Vanessa Redgrave is her mom - "Rebecca's Daughters" (1992) - "Sister My Sister" (1994) - "Lies My Mother Told Me" (2005) who is rather curt and cold "We're closed for the season, you'll have to find another place!"….But Laura has a daughter named Isabel (Kirsty Graham) who likes the professor and gets him into room D…with a view of the Loch!

Here goes……Lotsa locals drinking lotsa liquor and the largest lunk likes Laura…but she's holding out! Dr. "J" rents a rotten rig to research the Loch and ends up liking Laura! Little Isabel likes Dr, "J" and after he spends a week finding nothing and is ready to go home, she takes him to a secret cairn with a cove under a castle……let's just say that the professor gets a picture that proves…..well…..he can get his career back if he shows all the stuffy researchers at the Museum of Natural History in London…..he gets there and throws little Isabel's childish drawing of a "monster" up on the screen ………ha ha ha another hoax! Dr, "J" exits the hall, rushes back to the babe, beats up the bully and He and the 2 shes live happily ever after on the lovely Loch….goodnight!

Purple Gene gives "Loch Ness" 4 shots of ancient aged scotch out of 10 for being a little intoxicating but leaving me with a headache!

'Doonesbury' Still Feisty After 35 Years

Garry Trudeau

Over the years, the strip - born out of a cartoon that Yale graduate Trudeau, 57, wrote for the college paper - has used humor and biting commentary to address a broad sweep of society, from race relations and AIDS to same-sex marriage and stem cells.

But he's always come back to raw politics, taking a page of Walt Kelly's "Pogo," which pioneered the use of poking fun at politicians on the funny pages. Most recently, he has relentlessly hammered the war and President Bush, who's depicted as an asterisk wearing an increasingly battered Roman helmet.

In a column last year criticizing the B.D. story line in "Doonesbury," Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly said Trudeau was using "someone's personal tragedy" to generate opposition to the war. He led off the column with an anecdote about Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels using images of fallen soldiers to encourage war against Poland.

Trudeau, who describes his politics as "stone dull moderate," said he's supported Republicans in the past but has felt compelled to go after "mindless ideologues like the ones who've had a stranglehold on power the past five years."

Nearly ¾ Disapprove Of Bush

Canada

Nearly three out of four Canadians have an unfavorable view of US resident George W. Bush, and 38 percent consider him more dangerous than Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, according to a new poll.

However, the American president's low popularity in Canada does not translate into a general dislike of the country's southern neighbor.

According to the poll published Saturday by the National Post, 68 percent of Canadians have a favorable opinion of the United States generally.

The poll showed that while 49 percent of Canadians considered bin Laden the world's most dangerous figure, 38 percent named Bush as most dangerous.

Attends Groundbreaking of Theater

Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton stepped to a microphone Friday to cheers from thousands attending the groundbreaking of a theater her brother is developing in northeastern North Carolina.

Dolly and Randy Parton, their sister, Stella, and several members of the Grand Ole Opry then launched into a few country and gospel songs.

The theater will be the cornerstone of the planned 750-acre Carolina Crossroads Music and Entertainment District, which seeks to rival Branson, Mo., and Gatlinburg, Tenn., as a hub of country, pop, beach and gospel music.

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is turning its January spotlight on one of Japan's most celebrated filmmakers, Oscar?-winning animator Hayao Miyazaki, often called the Walt Disney of Japan. Each Thursday in January, TCM will present classic Miyazaki animation, each film presented first in its English-dubbed format, with an encore presented with the original Japanese-language track.

The festival kicks off Thursday, Jan. 5, Miyazaki-san's 65th birthday, with the movie that earned the esteemed director the Oscar? for Best Animated Film, Spirited Away (2002). TCM's telecast of each movie will be introduced by animation director John Lasseter (Toy Story), who directed the English-language track on Spirited Away.

U.S. Papers Pick Up Japanese-Style Comics

Manga

"Doonesbury" and "Peanuts," make way for "manga." Come January, the Sunday funnies of several major North American newspapers will have doe-eyed women in frilly outfits, effeminate long-haired heroes and other trademark images of the Japanese comic style.

The reason? Newspaper editors want to attract more young readers. A study released earlier this year by the Carnegie Corporation put the age of newspaper readers at 53 and climbing - hardly a recipe for circulation growth.

Several newspapers that have signed on to carry the two English-language manga strips on Sundays include the Los Angeles Times, Denver Post, Vancouver Sun and Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Gets 6 Years For Machu Picchu Damage

Walter Leonidas Espinoza

A camera crane operator shooting a commercial at the Machu Picchu Inca ruins whose equipment tipped and chipped a stone sundial there has been sentenced to six years in prison, officials said Friday.

The local court in Urubamba, 338 miles southeast of the capital, Lima, said it had found Walter Leonidas Espinoza guilty on Nov. 3 of destruction and alteration of cultural goods.

The production company Espinoza worked for knocked a corner edge off the Intihuatana, or "hitching post for the sun," in 2000 while shooting the commercial for the Backus beer company.

Officials with Backus, which faces a civil lawsuiti along with the advertising firm that hired the production company, declined comment Friday.

Converted Into Arts Center

St. Vibiana's Cathedral

The city's 129-year-old Spanish-Baroque cathedral, which narrowly escaped demolition after earthquake damage closed it a decade ago, has been resurrected and converted into a community arts center.

St. Vibiana's Cathedral, restored with the name Vibiana Place and a stage in place of the altar, will be unveiled Saturday night at a $350-a-person fund-raiser for the Los Angeles Conservancy, a preservation group that fought to save the building.

Built in 1876, St. Vibiana's was the seat of the Roman Catholic Church in southern California and a downtown landmark with its 83-foot-tall bell tower, vaulted ceiling, distinctive cupola and carved wooden doors.

Judge Allows Woman to Sue

Gene Simmons

A woman who claims to be a former girlfriend of KISS rocker Gene Simmons can proceed with a defamation lawsuit in which she says he made her sound like a "sex-addicted nymphomaniac" during a VH1 television show, a judge has ruled.

State Supreme Court Justice Rosalyn Richter denied Simmons' motion to dismiss two of three claims by Georgeann Walsh Ward, 53, who says in court papers made public Friday that Simmons slandered her during a "rockumentary" about KISS.

Ward said in her lawsuit, filed in January, that photos of her appeared 11 times during the report on KISS, which was shown on the network several times in July and August. In it, Simmons claimed to have had sexual encounters with 4,600 women.

Dog's Memorial Set For Cat Show

Ginny

This will probably be the first time a dog's memorial service is attended by 300 cats. A schnauzer-Siberian husky mix named Ginny will be eulogized Nov. 19 at the Westchester Cat Show, where she was named Cat of the Year in 1998 for her uncanny skill and bravery in finding and rescuing endangered tabbies.

Ginny died in August at age 17, after a long career as a one-dog rescue party for cats on Long Island's South Shore. The club says she saved hundreds of cats who were abandoned, injured or in harm's way.

Her owner, Philip Gonzalez of Long Beach, has written two books about Ginny and the cats she found, several of whom moved in with him. Among the best-known rescues is the time Ginny threw herself against a vertical pipe at a construction site to topple it and reveal the kittens trapped inside. She once ignored the cuts on her paws as she dug through a box full of broken glass to find an injured cat inside.

In Memory

David Westheimer

Novelist David Westheimer, who wrote "My Sweet Charlie" and "Von Ryan's Express," which was turned into a movie starring Frank Sinatra, has died at the age of 88.

During World War II, the former editor and columnist for the Houston Post served in the Army Air Forces as a navigator aboard a B-24 bomber. His bomber was shot down by Italian fighter planes and he spent 28 months as a prisoner of war until he was released in 1945.

Westheimer drew upon his experiences when he wrote "Von Ryan's Express," a story about an American soldier leading his fellow POWs on a daring escape from the Germans in Italy.

In 1965, Westheimer wrote "My Sweet Charlie," which dealt with racial tensions in a Texas town. The story focuses on a bond that developed between a black civil-rights activist and a white teen who is pregnant.

The book was made into a successful play, produced on Broadway in 1966. It was later made into a television movie that earned an Emmy Award for actress Patty Duke.

He is survived by his wife and two sons.
