Thom Hartmann, Now Syndicated on Air America Radio: A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW
In the early days, we'd call up radio stations, and program directors would say nobody wants to listen to liberal talk radio. They really believed it. Of course, common sense tells you that that doesn't make any sense, but that was the conventional wisdom for the better part of a decade. They are continually trying to reinforce that myth today, but Air America is growing very strong.
Molly Ivins: 'How to fix this mess' (smirkingchimp.com)
While it's still an open contest for Worst Legacy of the Bush Years, the destruction of goodwill for America around the world is definitely a contender.
Froma Harrop
The New York Times gave Bloomberg a rousing endorsement, even though the Democrat, former Bronx borough president Fernando Ferrer, is not half bad. Given the sunny prospects for next week's election, why does Bloomberg go to such lengths to hide the Republican tag? Something has clearly happened in recent months, and it didn't happen in New York City. It happened in Washington. And you have to wonder how many other Republicans across America are, like Bloomberg, running television ads that don't mention the "R" word.

Rush Limbaugh has, at various times, claimed credit for the elections of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush - and given how narrow electoral margins have been recently, he may be right. But now, in a free-market fashion that even conservatives have to salute, the tide is turning.
Thom Hartmann:: Talking Back To Talk Radio - Fairness, Democracy, and Profits (Dec 3, 2002; CommonDreams.org)
"All Democrats are fat, lazy, and stupid," the talk-show host said in grave, serious tones as if he were uttering a sacred truth.

Willow In PA
Dear Marty,
I just heard a report on Living On Earth regarding the air pollution in Long Beach. Not good. What is Ahnold doing to help? Let me guess...
love,
Willow
I'm afraid I couldn't get a great pic of the mill. The air pollution was stunning that day.
Thanks, Willow!
I'd recognize that valley anywhere!
Makes my lungs burn just to look at it, but as the locals would say: "Smells like bread & butter to me."

Shines at Dedication
Elizabeth Taylor
Swathed in jewels and bathed in the spotlight, Elizabeth Taylor made a rare but regal public appearance to dedicate the new UCLA Clinical AIDS Research and Education Center.
Wearing a cream-colored jacket over a billowy black pantsuit, the 73-year-old actress, who has had severe back problems in recent years, arrived in a wheelchair. She wore a jeweled butterfly barrette in her hair, her arms dripped with dozens of bracelets and a massive diamond lit up her left hand.
In front of an intimate crowd that included rocker Tom Petty and actress Carrie Fisher, Taylor cut a red ribbon to signify the center's official opening Friday and announced the creation of the Elizabeth Taylor Endowment Fund, which will support the center through grants and private donations.

Ahnold's Idea Of A Town Hall Meeting
Beatty & Bening
Actors Warren Beatty and wife Annette Bening tried to crash a campaign appearance Saturday by Gov. Arnold $chwarzenegger as the governor sought to drum up last-minute support for a group of statewide ballot measures.
A $chwarzenegger aide told the "Bulworth" star he was not on the guest list and did not have the appropriate wristband to get inside.
"You have to have a wristband to listen to the governor?" Bening asked. "He represents all of us, right?"
The couple's appearance caused momentary confusion. Just before the governor took the stage, the hangar door was closed - literally in their faces. It was later reopened as $chwarzenegger spoke.

Surprises N.C. High School Actors
Will Ferrell
Actor Will Ferrell shared one regret as he surprised winners of the State High School Play Festival.
"I regret the fact that I didn't participate in high school drama in any fashion." Ferrell, 38, told students. "You are way ahead of where I was, so congratulate yourselves for that."
Ferrell handed the festival's top honors to Union Pines High School in Cameron and Parkwood High School in Monroe. The festival was part of the fall gathering of the N.C. Theatre Conference.

UNESCO Honors
Mikis Theodorakis
UNESCO awarded its International Music Prize 2005 to 'Zorba the Greek' composer Mikis Theodorakis for his contributions to understanding between cultures and the advancement of peace.
The 80-year-old known to most Greeks simply as "Mikis" accepted the award in the western city of Aachen saying he "could never have been anything else but a musician". He was chosen among 40 nominees for the prize, initiated in 1975.
A lifelong activist, Theodorakis enlisted as a 17 year-old in the resistance against the German occupation of Crete.
He was later persecuted and jailed by a series of conservative governments, and later fell afoul of Greece's military rulers in the 1960s and 1970s.

They are joined by such acts as Michael McDonald, LeAnn Rimes, Marty Stuart, DC Talk and others on "Thank You Billy Graham," a track organized by Boone that celebrates the evangelist's 87th birthday.
Net proceeds from the song and video, out November 7, benefit Mercy Corps and Samaritan's Purse for Hurricane Katrina and Global Poverty Relief.

The 1,500-seat Randy Parton Theater is scheduled to open in April 2007 as the centerpiece of a planned 800-acre music and entertainment district in northeast North Carolina, hosting concerts of country, pop, beach and gospel music.

Lost Poetry
Marlene Dietrich
The German screen goddess Marlene Dietrich, a reclusive insomniac during the last years of her life, transformed herself from a publicity hungry film star into a very private night-time poet, it was revealed yesterday.
Behind the doors of a Paris hotel room, Dietrich would use Noël Coward's old portable typewriter to tap out poems to dead lovers including Ernest Hemingway and Yul Brynner, as well as fellow stars such as Ronald Reagan.
Dietrich wrote at night, unable to sleep, sometimes reading out her thoughts on the telephone to her daughter in Palm Springs, California. "Would you let me sleep, please," reads one poem. "I lead the most miserable of lives without you, so please at least let me sleep."

More Billboards Coming Down
50 Cent
Twenty-one billboards plugging rapper 50 Cent's movie "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" are coming down amid opposition from community groups.
George J. Kauker, president of the Philadelphia division of Clear Channel Outdoor, issued a brief statement about the decision, saying: "Based on clear and vocal negative response from local Philadelphia community groups, we agreed to remove this particular advertisement," Kauker said. He said the decision applied the Philadelphia area only.
In Los Angeles, Paramount Pictures earlier agreed to removed some billboards for the movie after activists in a south Los Angeles neighborhood rallied in protest. The movie is about a drug dealer who turns away from crime to pursue his true passion - music.

Accused of Assaulting Valet
Omar Sharif
Omar Sharif was sued by a restaurant parking valet who says the actor called him a derogatory name and punched him after the valet refused to accept his European currency.
Sharif - best known for roles in "Dr. Zhivago" and "Lawrence of Arabia" - became upset when his Porsche SUV was not waiting for him as he left Mastro's Steakhouse June 11, according to a lawsuit filed last month by valet Juan Anderson.
Anderson, who is from Guatemala, is seeking $50,000 in civil penalties, unspecified damages and attorney fees.

Bonfires Mark 400 Years
Guy Fawkes Day
Britain marked the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, in which Catholic conspirators tried to blow up the English parliament.
Every November 5, Britain sets off fireworks, light bonfires and burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes, one of the conspirators, to celebrate the foiling of the 1605 plot aimed at killing England's Protestant king and hundreds of dignitaries.
The Gunpowder Plotters were Catholic militants in an age when theirs was a persecuted minority faith in England. Less than a century earlier, King Henry VIII had broken with the Pope and replaced Roman Catholicism with Protestant Anglicanism.
Fawkes was caught on the night of November 4, 1605 with 36 barrels of gunpowder in a vault under the Houses of Parliament, preparing to detonate them the following day when King James I was due to open parliament.
He was tortured on the rack for several days in the Tower of London -- on the direct orders of the king -- before finally confessing. The king's men later killed or captured, tortured and executed many of the 17 others believed to have been directly or indirectly involved.

Canada's Richest Tabby
Red The Cat
According to the Ottawa Citizen, David Harper, the shy and somewhat reclusive owner of Red the cat, died in March at the age of 79, but left an estate worth 1.3 million dollars (1.1 million US) to his beloved tabby.
The United Church of Canada will administer the funds, in accordance with Harper's will, and be responsible for the three-year-old cat's care, feeding and veterinarian bills for the rest of its life, the newspaper reported.
Harper worked most of his life as a gardener in public service.
