It may be Halloween, but it's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas! Yes, no
Rove today, but danger looms. . . WA Post Saturday. . . Libby charged on 5
counts and faces 30 years and more than $1million in fines. Meantime,
Bushie runs to Camp David with HHHHHHaaaaaHarriet, who was Thursday's dumped
Supreme Court Nominee.
Tonight, we talk to the Very Rev. Robert Taylor, Dean of St.
Mark's Episcopal Church and co-founder of Faith Forward about his recent
trip to the Middle East and the continued effort by the Bush Administration
to inject politics into policy.
JOAN VILLA: The latest trend? Poverty - and it's on the rise (illinoistimes.com)
Hurricane Katrina dumped poverty into the nation's living rooms by pointing cameras at thousands of poor residents stranded on rooftops without the means to escape the rising water. Although poverty is more common in New Orleans than in many other cities, the plight of those on society's lowest economic rung is hardly unique to that region.
Sanford Pinsker: The physics classroom where science and superstition met (irascibleprofessor.com)
The high-stakes trial pitting scientists who side with Darwin and his "theory" of evolution against those who argue that "intelligent design" be added to the high school curriculum as an "alternative" worth considering interests me on several levels: as a boy who went through the rigors of high school in a small southwestern Pennsylvania town; and who, years later, taught at a small liberal-arts college just a stone's throw from the courthouse in Harrisburg, I may be able to bring a bit of well-needed levity to the raging debate.
Plan B
Things do not always go as planned. You might have forgotten to take your pill, or another birth control method you used might have failed, like your condom broke. Now you have a second chance to prevent pregnancy with Plan B®.
Andrew Tobias: Plan B (Oct 28)
Plan B is "a pill to prevent pregnancy after sex that would help to make abortion rare. It's currently sold by prescription. The FDA staff recommended making it available over-the-counter (because it's not always easy to get a prescription at 2am on a Saturday night). But then forces from the right flexed their muscles and the Administration blocked it."
Bill Frost: Black Comedy
The Boondocks makes you think; 12 Oz. Mouse makes you think you're on drugs. Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder has said, vehemently and often, that "nobody reads." You may have missed it; he's only said it thus far in print.
ROGER EBERT: The Night of the Hunter (A Great Movie)
Charles Laughton's "The Night of the Hunter'' (1955) is one of the greatest of all American films, but has never received the attention it deserves because of its lack of the proper trappings. Many "great movies'' are by great directors, but Laughton directed only this one film, which was a critical and commercial failure long overshadowed by his acting career.
ROGER EBERT: Shopgirl (3 1/2 stars)
One of the things you cannot do in this life is impose conditions on love. Another impossibility is to expect another's heart to accommodate your own desires and needs. You may think that cleverness, power or money will work on your behalf, but eventually you will end up feeling the way you really feel, and so will the other person, and there is no argument more useless than the one that begins with the words "But I thought we had an agreement."
Purple Gene's review of Debby Boone at the "Plush Room" in the York Hotel -Downtown San Franciso - October 28, 2005:
Debby Does Dallas!
Debby Does the "Big Apple"!
Debby Does the "Plush Room"!
No…..I'm not talking about the Bambi Woods…Misty Winters early porn movie "Debbie Does Dallas" (1977)….I'm talking about Debby Boone!!!! That's right…she had a mega-hit in 1977…but it wasn't porn! It was perhaps the sappiest, schlockiest, suckiest songs ever sung…."You Light Up My Life"….# 1 for ten straight weeks on the pop charts (We used to sing "You light up my farts" along with her). Yes…Debby the daughter of Pat Boone (who used to spank Debby's Christian bare bottom with a belt when she was young (sounds like fun))….Debby Boone who became big on the Christian Contemporary Gospel circuit with stuff like "With my Song, I will Praise Him" and "Keep the Flame Burning" Thank You Lord !!!!!! Debby Boone who recorded an album of children's music called "Hug Along Songs"……She got a little side tracked in 1984 when, along with Kim Cattrell, Barbara Carrera and Kirstie Alley, she played a "born-again" "Call Girl" in a made for TV movie called "Sins of the Past"
Tonight at the York Hotel in San Francisco…….
Debby Does the "Plush Room"!
Now she is "born-again…again" and this new permutation I call "Jesus Jazz"…..You see, Debby married Rosemary Clooney's son Gabriel Ferrer (his father was José Ferrer) and had 4 kids (just like her dad) and …the little chameleon that she is……decided to hit the music scene again - this time ala Diana Krall and Nora Jones and just for notoriety's sake, dedicate the new album to her mother-in-law "Reflections of Rosemary"….
Tonight, I drive across the Bay Bridge from Oakland to sneak in the far back area of the "Plush Room" to observe musical history….
"And now folks, let me introduce the amazing Debby Boone"…….John Otto, the producer and piano player starts tinkling out "Blue Skies" as a willowy satin clad and alluring Debby Boone saunters on to the stage singing the Cole Porter hit with a jazz lilt and in her famous soft and silky voice…but just a little hipper than the "You Light up my Life" period….she's confident, she's cute and she's still Christian (and 49 years old) . It immediately struck me that it is impossible for an Evangelical Christian to sing real Billie Holiday heavy jazz…..well this stuff is Real Lite….Then Debby shifts into "The Best is Yet to Come"…..and then she swings into "Time After Time (not Cindy Lauper's hit). All I can say is "At least she's hitting the notes!" Boy is she Bland ! Next she sings a Hank Williams song "I'm so Lonesome I could Cry" ….pretty Awful ! On to "Mood Indigo"….this is getting Yucky !
But Debby saves the day…….her encore is "You Light up my Life" …..All I can think about is Pat Boone whacking his young daughter's Ass while he prays…."and you light up my life…you give me hope…to carry on…."!!!!
Purple Gene gives Debby Boone 1 creepy Christian crucifix out of 10 for going somewhere she doesn't really belong….sorry honey .."you light up my farts"…still !!

Ludacris finally performed for East Tennessee State University students after weeks of arguments with city officials.
The concert had been scheduled at city-owned Freedom Hall Civic Center, but City Manager Pete Peterson rejected the contract because he had security concerns.
School officials allowed the event to be held in the ETSU Memorial Center, where an estimated 5,000 people showed up for the performance.

An auction of Beach Boys memorabilia was canceled after representatives of the band told the auction house the items had been stolen from a North Hollywood warehouse.
The band's record company learned of the auction planned by London-based CooperOwen when the items appeared on the Internet, said Edwin McPherson of Brother Records, the band's corporate entity.
He said Thursday's auction was canceled "with about 30 minutes to spare."
The folks who keep the world supplied with Elvis T-shirts and coffee mugs have a new project in the works - an Elvis Presley license plate.
Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. can move ahead with its plan when 1,000 orders for the plates are assured. The state requires that minimum number of sales to approve a so-called specialty license plate, which costs $35 more than a regular tag.
If approved, the Elvis license plates would be available only for cars registered in the state of Tennessee. Proceeds would go to the Regional Medical Center, the Memphis region's main publicly supported hospital and home of the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center.
The license plate would feature an image of Presley with a guitar and "1956" in large, bold numbers. That was the year Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" made No. 1 on the pop music charts.

Infinity Broadcasting's preparations for the imminent departure of franchise morning host Howard Stern could leave rock music radio a collateral casualty.
To soften the blow of Stern's December 16 exit from terrestrial radio, Infinity has changed the format of some of the 27 stations that carry him. Of the 12 rock stations that featured Stern in the morning, three are flipping to talk or the Jack format, which uses no DJs and a random, classic-rock-oriented playlist. Such flips in Sacramento, Calif., and Philadelphia mean one less new-rock station. But in New York, come January 3, Arbitron's top-rated market will not have a station playing current rock hits.
Infinity launched a talk-based "Free FM" format October 25 on eight stations. The personality-driven programming will feature former Van Halen vocalist David Lee Roth and comedian Adam Carolla, among others, as syndicated replacements for Stern in morning drive.
Paramount Pictures is removing some billboards promoting the upcoming 50 Cent film "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" after community activists complained they promoted gun violence. The billboards depict the rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, holding a gun in his left hand and a microphone in his right. At least two were near schools.
One of the signs was located in front of a charter school in Altadena and another sign was near a school in south Los Angeles, areas that have struggled with gang violence.
Activists in a south Los Angeles neighborhood staged a rally Tuesday to protest the signs. Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich sent a letter Wednesday to Paramount President Brad Grey calling for immediate removal of the billboards.

Singer R. Kelly is a step closer to trial after a judge refused Friday to dismiss charges in a three-year old case against him for allegedly engaging in videotaped sex acts with an underage girl.
Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan rejected defense arguments that prosecutors have been too vague about when the alleged crime took place, said county state's attorney spokeswoman Marcy Jensen.

When Emily the cat went missing a month ago, her owners looked for their wandering pet where she had ended up before - the local animal shelter. This week they learned Emily sailed to France.
Lesley McElhiney now figures her cat went prowling around a paper warehouse near home and ended up in a cargo container that went by ship across the Atlantic Ocean and was trucked to Nancy, a city in northeastern France near the border with Germany.
Employees at a French lamination company found her in the container, checked her tags and called Emily's veterinarian, John Palarski, in Kimberly, just east of Appleton.
Emily will need a health certificate from France to return home, and she will have to go through quarantine again on entering the United States, Palarski said.
Teen actress Tara Correa-McMullen, who portrayed a former gang member in the TV show "Judging Amy," was shot to death amid gang violence, police said.
Authorities in Inglewood, a suburb south of Los Angeles, said the actress was shot several times as she stood outside an apartment complex Oct. 21. Two men with her were wounded.
Correa-McMullen's parents, Devora Correa and Thomas McMullen, wrote in the eulogy that was read at the 16-year-old's funeral on Friday that their daughter made friends with everyone, "whether they were a grip or a caterer."
After filming her first movie, "Rebound," which was released this summer, Correa-McMullen won a recurring role on "Judging Amy" as a former gang member named Graciela.
