On behalf of my Dad, RAW (Bob), I want to throw my arms around you "like a circle 'round the sun!" for your loving graciousness in posting Bob's need on your site. As of about 5 minutes ago, over $68,000. has come in. We are all overjoyed as it now means that we can continue to celebrate this phase of his life in the comfort of his own home, with all the care he needs, until his passing, honored by the loving support of so, so many wondrous folks. Just last week I was sick with heartache as we were faced with giving his notice and now, the world has simply and completely - transformed. Last night, he dictated a note that he wanted me to forward to you - below is the text. He is very weak, cannot sit up or eat on his own, and as he struggled with a whispery voice to express his gratitude, he broke into tears several times. How my heart swelled as I gazed at this man who has been both one of the most frustrating - and incredible - beings I have ever known. I would not be who I am today, had I not grown up with him./color> Much love, Christina Pearson/color>
BOB'S NOTE:/color>
"Dear Friends, my God, what can I say. I am dumbfounded, flabbergasted, and totally stunned by the charity and compassion that has poured in here the last three days./color>
To steal from Jack Benny, "I do not deserve this, but I also have severe leg problems and I don't deserve them either."/color>
Because he was a kind man as well as a funny one, Benny was beloved. I find it hard to believe that I am equally beloved and especially that I deserve such love./color>
Whoever you are, wherever you are, know that my love is with you./color>
You have all reminded me that despite George W. Bush and all his cohorts, there is still a lot of beautiful kindness in the world./color>
Beth Quinn: In memory of one fine Texan's wit and wisdom (recordonline.com)
During a speech a couple of years ago, she told a story about getting through airport security while wearing a body suit with snaps in the crotch. The snaps had set off the metal detectors and the security guard had his own underwear in a twist about it. The guard wanted to take her into a private room for special screening. She was late for a flight and was having none of it. "I will take my pants off right here and now. Right. Here." They let her go.

There is an old saying that "If the English language made any sense, a catastrophe would be an apostrophe with fur."
One of the houses that Jon Bon Jovi is planning to renovate could be the house that I grew up in, on N. 15th Street in North Philly.
I drove past it last year and it is shambles with the two porch chairs that my parents left for the new owners still sitting where they always were. Some of the houses in the old neighborhood have collapsed due to sink holes.
The neighborhood was terrific growing up with three movie houses less than two blocks away on Broad Street. The house was between two subway stops less than three blocks away. There were several restaurants and a delicatessan where we could pick out our own pickles right from the wooden barrel. We had a corner grocery store and a pharmacy on the opposite corner.
We didn't get a supermarket in the area until I was in high school. That eventually put the corner grocery store out of business. I could walk to two different dances on the weekend, one on Friday night and one on Sunday night. What terrific memories I have of the old neighborhood.
Then when I grew up, my parents moved to the suburbs where my Dad still lives today.

Big-band leader Toshiko Akiyoshi, pianist Ramsey Lewis and vocalist Jimmy Scott were among those selected by the National Endowment for the Arts as the newest Jazz Masters, the nation's highest jazz honor.
The other new Jazz Masters are hard-bop trombonist Curtis Fuller; tenor saxophonist Frank Wess, who is also one of the most influential flutists in jazz history; alto saxophonist Phil Woods, who was honored in the composer-arranger category, and jazz writer and educator Dan Morgenstern, director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, who was selected in the jazz advocacy category.
The seven new Jazz Masters will officially receive their awards, which include a $25,000 fellowship, at a ceremony and concert on Jan. 12 in New York during the annual conference of the International Association for Jazz Education.

George McGovern may have lost the 1972 presidential election, but he inspired many others to work for justice, decency and a better life for poor people around the world, former President Bill Clinton said Saturday at a ceremony to dedicate a library in McGovern's honor.
"I believe no other presidential candidate ever has had such an enduring impact in defeat," said Clinton, who directed McGovern's presidential campaign in Texas. "Senator, the fires you lit then still burn in countless hearts."
Clinton was the keynote speaker at the official dedication of a library and study center honoring the legacy of the former Democratic senator and his wife, Eleanor. Several thousand people, including McGovern; both South Dakota senators, John Thune and Tim Johnson; and former Sen. Tom Daschle gathered at Dakota Wesleyan University.
A model of the Starship Enterprise used in the pilot and title sequences of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" sold for $576,000 Saturday at an auction of costumes, sets and props from 40 years of the "Star Trek" sci-fi franchise.
The 78-inch-long miniature of the "Enterprise-D," built by Industrial Light and Magic, debuted in 1987 in the episode "Encounter at Farpoint," and then was used in many subsequent episodes, as well as the film "Star Trek Generations."
Other top sellers from Saturday's auction included a spacesuit belonging to the series' Dr. McCoy from the episode "The Tholian Web," which fetched $144,000; and a replica of Captain James T. Kirk's chair on the bridge in the first Star Trek series.
The painted wood chair was only a re-creation for a 1996 episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" that mixed action from that newer series with old footage, but it still sold for $62,400.
Leann Real promised her husband, an avid sports fan, that if they ever had a son he'd get to pick the name. ESPN Montana Real was born this week at Biloxi Regional Medical Center.
Rusty Real, of D'Iberville, chose ESPN (pronounced Espen) after the sports network and Montana after football legend Joe Montana.
Baby ESPN isn't alone.
Three others were cited in a 2005 report on tivocommunity.com about the network's 25th anniversary. They are Espn Malachi McCall in Pampa, Texas; Espn Curiel in Corpus Christi, Texas; and Espn Blondeel in Michigan.

Veteran CBS newsman Bob Schieffer, who received the Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media at the University of South Dakota, says the nation has never needed a vigorous free press more than now.
"I cannot remember a time when it's been more challenging for journalists," said Schieffer, 69, who has covered Washington for more than 30 years and hosts the CBS interview show "Face the Nation."
"Why does the government need a list of my phone calls?" he asked. "And what business does a democracy have running secret prisons? ... Do you believe that anyone would have known about these secret prisons or what was going on in Abu Ghraib if it had been left to the government to announce it?
Schieffer said America's great strength comes from emphasizing the values and principles that separate it from its enemies - "not by adopting their methods and their techniques."
Protesters greeted Florida Gov. Jeb Bush on his way to a campaign event for a Pennsylvania senator, and he briefly took refuge in a subway station supply closet to avoid the anti-Republican demonstrators.
The resident's brother encountered protesters on their way to join a demonstration outside the exclusive Duquesne Club, where Sen. Rick Santorum, a Republican, was holding a fundraiser Friday.
The protesters, made up of members of the United Steelworkers union and the anti-war group Uprise Counter Recruitment, chanted, "Jeb go home," and said Bush blew them a kiss.
The incident lasted about five minutes. No one was arrested or cited.

The widow and a daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy give a thumbs-up for "Bobby," an ensemble drama about the 1968 Kennedy assassination directed by Emilio Estevez and set for release next month.
Kennedy, the former New York senator who ran for president in 1968, was shot to death June 5, 1968 at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles after winning the California primary. The film follows the intersecting lives and stories of 22 fictional characters at the hotel the night of the assassination.
"Our family is grateful to Emilio Estevez and the extraordinary cast of 'Bobby' for remembering Robert Kennedy's life and his commitment to social justice, peace and equality," Ethel Kennedy said in a statement released Friday by the Weinstein Company, which produced the film.
The film opens in select cities Nov. 17 and nationwide on Nov. 23.

Jamie Lee Curtis said she has closed the book on her acting career. "I'm not an actor anymore," she told "Access Hollywood" host Nancy O'Dell. "I really don't imagine I'll do that again."
Curtis, 46, went on to say, "I'm just focused on my family and just can't imagine anything that's going to pull me away from them right now."
Curtis appeared on the show to promote her latest children's book, "Is There a Human Race?" Her interview with O'Dell will appear on the show's weekend episode, an NBC spokeswoman said.

With bulldozers threatening small carnivores north of New Orleans, volunteers headed to the rescue Saturday.
There wasn't any chance that the targets might escape. The Nature Conservancy and nine volunteers from as far as Baton Rouge, 60 miles away, were out to rescue yellow pitcher plants, pencil-thin tube-shaped plants that use slippery wax and slick liquid to trap the flies, wasps and bees they digest.
The plants are threatened in Louisiana by the disappearance of their habitat. The plants grow only in savannas and hillside seepage bogs in the longleaf pine ecosystem. These forests, which once covered 90 million acres of the Southeast, now cover only 3 percent of their original acreage.
On Saturday, volunteers dug up 2,000 of the plants in a half-mile strip of land.
Buck O'Neil, the goodwill ambassador for the Negro Leagues who fell one vote shy of the Hall of Fame, died Friday night. He was 94.
A star in the Negro Leagues who barnstormed with Satchel Paige, O'Neil later became the first black coach in the majors. Baseball was his life - in July, he batted in a minor league All-Star game.
A good-hitting, slick-fielding first baseman, O'Neil twice won a Negro Leagues batting title, then became a pennant-winning manager of the Kansas City Monarchs.
As a scout for the Chicago Cubs, he discovered and signed Hall of Famers Lou Brock and Ernie Banks. In 1962, the Cubs made him the first black coach in the major leagues.
Jackie Robinson was the first black with an opportunity to make plays in the big leagues. But as bench coach, O'Neil was the first to make decisions.
Born in 1911 in Florida, John "Buck" O'Neil began a lifetime in baseball hanging around the spring training complex of the great New York Yankee teams of the '20s. Some of the players befriended the youngster and allowed him inside.
