I keep hearing that Lyle Lovett is a right-winger. I suspect he's too smart
and not selfish enough to support Bush. Do you have any idea how to find
out celebrities who take sides on politics?
Brent Budowsky: Camelot 2 Is Coming: K Street Money Moves (huffingtonpost.com)
The front page of the Washington Post reports that in anticipation of Democrats winning at least one House of Congress, there is now a major movement of corporate and lobbying money away to Democrats. Trust me, it's true. I have begun to regularly get calls from firms looking for places and projects to put money ahead of the changes coming to Washington.
Ted Rall: 'If people get help, the terrorists have won' (smirkingchimp.com)
"Hezbollah's reputation as an efficient grass-roots social service network," reported the Times, "was in evidence everywhere. Young men with walkie-talkies and clipboards were in the battered Shiite neighborhoods on the southern edge of Bint Jbail, taking notes on the extent of the damage. Hezbollah men also traveled door to door checking on residents and asking them what help they needed." With terrorists like that, who needs FEMA?
Jennifer Merin: BUKOSWKI IS BACK: Factotum (nypress.com)
The challenge is to move ordinary people who might think Bukowski has nothing to do with them, who think they can't get anything out of this film. But, appreciating him and his art has nothing to do respecting his lifestyle. Frankly, he does many things I wouldn't do. If I were in the same room with him, I might even knock him down. But his is a unique expression of humanity, and I think it can move everyone.
I found a real classic last night on TCM….a ghoulish black and white horror filled period piece called "The Body Snatcher"…not the semi-Sci-Fi pod filled "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956) (1978) but the 19th century freaky grave robbing novelette written by Robert Louis Stevenson…….
These were the days when the budding medical science field had to illegally obtain fresh cadavers to experiment upon ….kinda like stem cell research today….the religious fanatics of the time thought it was odious and sinful to dig up dead bodies for any reason…..well Doctor "Wolf" McFarland (Henry Daniell - Baron de Varville in "Camille" (1936) - Sir Robert Cecil in "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex" (1939) (with Bette Davis and Errol Flynn) - "Lord Wolfinham in "The Sea Hawk" (1940) - King William III in "Captain Kidd" (1945) - Professor Moriarty in 'Sherlock Holmes: the Woman in Green" (1945) is a renowned surgeon and teacher of anatomy at the University of Edinburgh. He has been secretly paying a Cabman named John Gray (Boris Karloff - "Frankenstein" (1931) - "The Mask of Fu Manchu" (1932) - "The Black Cat" (1934) - "The Raven" (1935) - "The Terror" (1963) (with Jack Nicholson) to dig up and deliver dead bodies from locally guarded graveyards.
This movie is the pinnacle of perfection when it comes to the black and white genre…..the chase scene through the moors with a dead body in the carriage…the murder of the blind street singer and the battle to the death between the professor and the grave robber are pure classic cinema…….
Purple Gene gives "The Body Snatcher" 9 creepy sheet covered cadavers out of 10 for being scary and anecdotal and thrilling.

As film critic Roger Ebert recovers from cancer surgery, five guest hosts have lined up to sit in the balcony with Richard Roeper on the movie review shoe "Ebert & Roeper."
The substitutes, scheduled for shows airing through Sept. 24, include actor Fred Willard and screenwriter and novelist John Ridley. Actress Aisha Tyler will appear on two shows.
Toni Senecal, entertainment reporter for WNYW-TV in New York, and Chicago Tribune movie critic Michael Phillips round out the list.
Bob Seger turned the page, and Metallica finally found justice for online fans. Now, only a few remaining big-name musical acts refuse to make their songs available on Apple Computer's popular iTunes Music Store.
Analysts say the online holdouts - including the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Garth Brooks, Radiohead and Kid Rock - probably can't avoid iTunes forever as fans flock to the Internet to buy music.
But the artists argue online distribution leaves them with too small a profit. And, they say, iTunes wrecks the artistic integrity of an album by allowing songs to be purchased by the track for 99 cents. Some bands, such as AC/DC have released albums on other, more flexible sites, but not iTunes.
There are other reasons bands avoid cyberspace. In some cases, various parties that own or control older music catalogs can't agree to a distribution contract. Others have avoided the Internet altogether out of piracy concerns. (Most online stores, however, use rights-management technology to protect against unauthorized distribution.)
Shout! Factory has acquired the catalog of progressive-rock supergroup Emerson Lake & Palmer, Billboard.com has learned.
The label will assume North American rights to 10 albums and a host of previously unreleased material for the 1970s act. A reissue campaign will begin in January with a two-disc retrospective, "The Essential Emerson, Lake & Palmer."
Keyboardist Keith Emerson, bassist/guitarist Keith Lake and drummer Carl Palmer formed in 1969 and scored four top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 between 1971 and 1974. The trio is best known for tracks such as "Lucky Man," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "Touch & Go," "From the Beginning" and "C'est La Vie."
This was the week that country music died in Los Angeles. After more than 20 years on the air, the city's only country music station, KZLA-FM, abruptly left the air Thursday and was seamlessly replaced with the rhythmic pop of "Movin' 93.9," which plays artists such as Beyonce, Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez.
KZLA's sudden and unannounced demise leaves America's two most populous cities, Los Angeles and New York, without country music stations.
Val Maki, vice president of Emmis Communications' radio division, said the format change was a "better business decision despite what a wonderful station KZLA was."

Running a business is like being a rock star. At least that's the theory behind David Fishof's plan to lure corporate clients to his Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp -- learn to bond by jamming in a band.
For many of the 80 fantasy rockers at his camp in New York this week, however, the experience was all about getting away from being doctors, lawyers, bankers, teachers and salesmen.
The corporate brochure promises "a non-traditional approach to re-energize your employees, form new relationships across your organisation" and improve team-building skills.
More than 100 young women who expressed interest in joining the military in the past year were preyed upon sexually by their recruiters. Women were raped on recruiting office couches, assaulted in government cars and groped en route to entrance exams.
A six-month Associated Press investigation found that more than 80 military recruiters were disciplined last year for sexual misconduct with potential enlistees. The cases occurred across all branches of the military and in all regions of the country.
At least 35 Army recruiters, 18 Marine Corps recruiters, 18 Navy recruiters and 12 Air Force recruiters were disciplined for sexual misconduct or other inappropriate behavior with potential enlistees in 2005, according to records obtained by the AP under dozens of Freedom of Information Act requests. That's significantly more than the handful of cases disclosed in the past decade.
Sporting a sunburn and blisters on his fingers, Boy George wrapped up his court-ordered community service - sweeping the streets for the sanitation department.
And while the experience got off to a bumpy start - he yelled at the media hounding him on his first day on the job Monday - the former Culture Club frontman had only good things to say about his bosses when he finished his five-day stint Friday.
"They treated us with kindness, and they treated us with respect," he said.

An Indian businessman born with two penises wants one of them removed surgically as he wants to marry and lead a normal sexual life, a newspaper report said Saturday.
The 24-year-old man from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh admitted himself to a New Delhi hospital this week with an extremely rare medical condition called penile duplication or diphallus, the Times of India said.
"Two fully functional penes is unheard of even in medical literature. In the more common form of diphallus, one organ is rudimentary," the newspaper quoted a surgeon as saying.
The surgery was expected to be challenging as both organs were well-formed and full blood supply to the retained penis had to be ensured to allow it to function normally, he added.
More than a dozen children of polygamist families spoke publicly at a Utah rally for the first time on Saturday about their lifestyle and called for more understanding.
"I'm the 14th child in a large family and I have several moms," said Mary, 18. "All my mothers love me."
Using only their first names to protect their families, 15 young men and women ranging in age from 10 to 20 addressed a pro-polygamy crowd of 200 to 300 in downtown Salt Lake City.
Organizers of Saturday's rally say plural families have historically avoided the spotlight, fearing criminal prosecution and ridicule. Polygamy is outlawed across the United States, but researchers estimate there are more than 30,000 practicing polygamists in Utah.
