TONIGHT

Erin Hart

On 710 KIRO from 9pm - 1 am (pdt)

Wow. The Bushies change the name of the war on terror. It's the struggle against extremism now and you know what? IT STILL IS A MESS AND A QUAGMIRE. By any other name just as bad.

Karl Rove case just keeps on giving--let's see how long he and Scooter last. Martha G (or is it Marty?) from BartCop provides us with links and much needed humor sites to explore in these dog days of summer tonight around 9pm.

And LIVE and LOCAL progressive talk is all about the viaduct and the gas tax--we NEED to invest--so how do we convince the rest of the state? Or should we? Shall we charge them a tax to talk over the mountains the goods and services provided via the ports and rails, highways and bridges???

Purple Gene Review

'Five Easy Pieces'

Purple Gene's review of the movie "Five Easy Pieces" (1970)     [View Trailer]
Directed by Bob Rafelson:

And a Special Purple Gene Award for "The Best "B" Actress in a Comedic Cameo playing a Cynical Hitch Hiker…..Ever":

First the Movie…..

I turned on "Five Easy Pieces" the other night just to hear Bobby Eroica Dupea (Jack Nicholson - "The Cry Baby Killer" - "The Terror" - "Psych-Out" - "The Rebel Rousers") order Toast from a bitch waitress (Lorna Thayer) ….."You want me to hold the chicken…huh?""I want you to hold it between your knees"!!!!! Ha Ha Ha I still remember that as one of my favorite scenes ever…..But then we have Bobby's blubbering Tammy Wynette lovin' unbelievably bad eye make up wearin' girlfriend Rayette (Karen Black - "Dinosaur Valley Girls" - "Stripping for Jesus" - "Bound and Gagged: A Love Story" (She won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress for Rayette)) who is lying in bed crying to the Tammy tear jerker "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" because Bobby wants to leave her to go see his dying DAD…..Bobby, after thrashing away in his car, storms back in to Rayette…slashes the needle over the record and says…"Rayette…do you wanna come with me? You'll have to stay in a hotel!"

"Five Easy Pieces" is a movie about an unhappy, cynical oil rigger who used to be a classical pianist (5 Easy Pieces" was the name of his 1st piano lesson book!) who, along with his cheesy hick girlfriend goes back to the life and family he ran away from.

This movie is just filled with amazing dialogue and hilarious vignettes….Bobby playing the piano on the back of the truck….going bowling with Rayette…Rayette singing along to "Stand by Your Man" in the car and then on the way to see his dying Dad, Bobby and Rayette pick up 2 hitch hikers……

Terry Grouse (Toni fuckin' Basil - "Easy Rider" - "Pajama Party" - "Hey Mickey" huge music video hit with Toni dressed as a cheerleader) and her weird girlfriend Palm Apodaca (Helena Kallianiotes - "Head" (Belly Dancer) - "Shanks" (Mati Hari) - "Kansas City Bomber" (Golden Globe nomination for her role as "Jackie" the evil roller derby queen) The acting and insane script that ensues in the back of Bobby's car is why Helena is being awarded the Special Purple Gene Award for "The Best "B" Actress in a Comedic Cameo playing a Cynical Hitch Hiker…..Ever"

From the moment Palm opens her mouth, "Hey, follow that truck, they know the best places to stop!" Rayette says, "Salesmen and Cops are the ones, if you'd ever waitressed HONEY…you'd know that!" Palm says to Rayette, "Don't call me HONEY, MAC!" Rayettes says, "Don't call me MAC, HONEY!"

Palm says, "You know they invented a car that runs on….steam…you could ride around and not cause a stink. But do you know, they will never let us have it!...Why? Man, he likes to create a stink. I mean I've seen filth you wouldn't believe. Ugh, what a stink. I'm moving to Alaska where it's white everywhere." Palm kept me in stitches the whole time her face and mouth dominated the screen….congratulations Helena (she'll be 62 this year).

Purple Gene gives the movie "Five Easy Pieces" 9 really dark skanky eyelashes out of 10 for being such a sleazy and entertaining slice of life!

Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim introduces members of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra during a concert at Seville's Maestranza theatre, Spain, July 29, 2005. Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra's young musicians include Arabs, Palestinians and Israelis. Through it, the composer and his late partner Palestinian writer Edward Said, hoped to use music to heal Jewish-Arab tensions. The orchestra is based near the southern Spanish city of Seville and the Spanish government has issued diplomatic passports to all its members so they can travel freely to the Palestinian territories and other Middle Eastern countries, Barenboim said. Guantanamo Detentions Disgraceful

Jimmy Carter

Former President Carter said Saturday the detention of terror suspects at the Guantanamo Bay Naval base was an embarrassment and had given extremists an excuse to attack the United States.

Carter also criticized the U.S.-led war in Iraq as "unnecessary and unjust."

"I think what's going on in Guantanamo Bay and other places is a disgrace to the U.S.A.," he told a news conference at the Baptist World Alliance's centenary conference in Birmingham, England. "I wouldn't say it's the cause of terrorism, but it has given impetus and excuses to potential terrorists to lash out at our country and justify their despicable acts."

Carter said, however, that terrorist acts could not be justified, and that while Guantanamo "may be an aggravating factor ... it's not the basis of terrorism."

"What has happened at Guantanamo Bay ... does not represent the will of the American people," Carter said Saturday. "I'm embarrassed about it, I think its wrong. I think it does give terrorists an unwarranted excuse to use the despicable means to hurt innocent people."

Bayreuth Festival

Patti Smith

US rock legend, Patti Smith, covered this year's Bayreuth Festival for the high-brow German weekly, Die Zeit, she said.

Smith, a star of the New York punk scene in the 1970s and 1980s, said she had been asked by Die Zeit to write about the legendary month-long summer musical festival dedicated exclusively to the works of Richard Wagner (1813-1883).

The singer, songwriter and poet attended the festival for the first time and saw performances of "Tannhaeuser" and "Parsifal" during the glitzy premiere week.

New Biography

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix pretended to be gay so he would be discharged from the army, according to claims in a biography that has used his military medical records.

The rock legend said he left the 101st Airborne Division aged 19 in 1962 after being injured on a parachute jump.

But Room Full of Mirrors by Charles R Cross says army records show he was discharged for "homosexual tendencies".

Mr Cross says Hendrix had a legendary appetite for women - he even had an affair with actress Brigitte Bardot.

But he had told a base psychiatrist at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he had fallen in love with a fellow soldier, the book claims.

Man With An Opinion

Burt Reynolds

Burt Reynolds said on the "Tonight" show that if he'd have been gay, it would have saved him "millions," and he joked that Willie Nelson might have been his choice.

Reynolds, who worked with the great country singer in the new remake of "The Dukes of Hazzard," had a famously messy divorce from Loni Anderson years ago, and recently he settled a lawsuit with ex-girlfriend Pamela Seals.

"When I worked with Willie Nelson, who is just about the nicest man I've ever worked with in my life, the sweetest, kindest man, I thought, 'If I'd have been gay, it would have saved me millions,'" he told Jay Leno in the show broadcast Thursday night.

Reynolds said that if he'd have hooked up with Nelson, they'd still be "happily together."

$200,000 At Prop Auction

Lightsaber

The lightsaber used by intergalactic hero Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars" sold for 200,000 dollars at an auction of Hollywood props that fetched far more than expected, officials said.

The deadly laser sword brandished by actor Mark Hamill in the original 1977 film was the star of a lot of 550 pieces of movie memorabilia that went on the block Friday and fetched a total of more than two million dollars.

Also performing far better than expected was the lightsaber used by Skywalker's dark nemesis Darth Vader in 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back," which fetched 118,000 dollars instead of the estimated 40,000-60,000 dollars.

Chelsea Clinton

A Kenyan says he offered Bill Clinton 40 goats and 20 cows for his daughter's hand in marriage five years ago - and is still waiting for an answer.

Godwin Kipkemoi Chepkurgor told the East Africa Standard newspaper last week that he wrote Clinton asking for Chelsea's hand in 2000 during the then-president's visit to Kenya.

Chepkurgor, a 36-year-old elected city councilor in Nakuru, recounted writing to the U.S president through the Kenyan government.

The electrical engineering graduate said he promised to pay his would-be father-in-law 20 cows and 40 goats in dowry for his only daughter in accordance with African tradition.

15 Hurt in Roller Coaster Collision

Disneyland

One train rear-ended another on the "California Screamin'" roller coaster at Disney's California Adventure theme park Friday night, slightly injuring 15 people, authorities said.

Most of the victims had minor neck and back injuries, Anaheim city spokesman John Nicoletti said. "At this point we don't have a cause," he said of the 6:30 p.m. accident.

Forty-eight people were on the ride at the time of the collision, Nicoletti said. Fifteen people, including two children, were taken to a hospital; the rest were examined at the scene and released.

Ex Cancels eBay Auction Plans

Jennifer Aniston

If you wanted a makeshift birthday card supposedly written on a piece of toilet paper by Jennifer Aniston, you'll have to look elsewhere. Aniston's former fling Michael Baroni, a California lawyer, has canceled his eBay auction - originally set to begin Friday - of keepsakes from the pair's teenage romance.

The goods included a piece of paper with Aniston's name and phone number written in lipstick and a photo of the pair hugging when they first met.

"I have voluntarily canceled the eBay auction upon receiving word from one of Jennifer's representatives that she didn't want me conducting the auction," Baroni said in a statement to The Associated Press on Friday. "I have nothing but fond memories of Jennifer as a friend and only wish her well."

Opry Invitation

Dierks Bentley

He sure wasn't thinkin' 'bout an invitation to the Grand Ole Opry. Country singer Dierks Bentley was in the middle of a show at the House of Blues in Los Angeles when he got word that he was chosen to join the cast of the venerable radio show.

According to Opry spokeswoman Jessie Schmidt, Opry veteran Marty Stuart walked onstage about an hour into Bentley's set and said "Will you do it ... will you marry the Grand Ole Opry?"

"Hell, yeah!" Bentley answered.

Bentley's formal induction will be Oct. 1.

Naked People Get in Free

Leopold Museum

Vienna's prestigious Leopold Museum is usually a pretty buttoned-down place, but on Friday, some of the nudes in its marble galleries were for real.

Scores of naked or scantily clad people wandered the museum, lured by an offer of free entry to "The Naked Truth," a new exhibition of early 1900s erotic art, if they showed up wearing just a swimsuit - or nothing at all.

With a midsummer heat wave sweeping much of Europe, pushing temperatures into the mid-90s Fahrenheit in Vienna, the normally staid museum decided that making the most of its cool, climate-controlled space would be just the ticket to spur interest in the show.

In Memory

Robert Wright

Robert Wright, a composer and lyricist who collaborated with George Forrest on the scores for such Broadway musicals as "Kismet," "Song of Norway" and "Grand Hotel," has died at the age of 90.

For much of their careers, Wright and Forrest specialized in adapting someone else's music, usually a classical composer, and spinning it into something new.

They used their talent, for example, to take an obscure wedding dance by Edvard Grieg and turn it into "Strange Music," a smash from "Song of Norway" (1944). They later transformed the exotic themes of Russian composer Alexander Borodin into songs such as "Stranger in Paradise" and "Baubles, Bangles and Beads" for "Kismet" (1953), which won a Tony Award for best musical.

The songwriting team did much the same thing in Hollywood, working on dozens of films including "Maytime," "Sweethearts" and "I Married an Angel." Among their Hollywood hit tunes was "The Donkey Serenade," adapted from a piano piece by Rudolf Friml and sung by Allan Jones in the film "The Firefly" (1937).

The Wright-Forrest partnership lasted some 70 years, ending when Forrest died in 1999. It began in the late 1920s at Miami Senior High School where they wrote their first song.

Pat McCormick

Pat McCormick, a walrus-mustachioed comedy writer for Phyllis Diller, Red Skelton and others who also appeared on "The Tonight Show" and had a role in three "Smokey and the Bandit" movies, died Friday. He was 78.

McCormick dropped out of Harvard Law School to pursue advertising work in New York but abandoned that career when he began earning money writing jokes for television and nightclub performers.

McCormick eventually became a writer for "The Jack Paar Show." Over a five-decade career, he wrote for the 1960s comedy series "Get Smart" and "The Danny Kaye Show." He also wrote and appeared on "Candid Camera" and was an announcer and straight man on Don Rickles' short-lived TV variety show in 1968.

He was a regular on "The New Bill Cosby Show" in 1972.

McCormick wrote for and made scores of appearances on "The Tonight Show." He played characters in sketches, dressing up as turkeys, squirrels and the shark from "Jaws." In one 1974 show, he streaked naked across the stage behind Carson during the opening monologue.

McCormick, who was more than 6 1/2 feet tall and weighed more than 200 pounds, also appeared in small roles in movies. He played Big Enos in the 1977 movie "Smokey and the Bandit" and two sequels.
