Purple Gene Reviews

'The Island'

Purple Gene's review of the movie "The Island" (2005)     [View Trailer]
Directed by Michael Bay:

SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT

I decided to go down to the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland today for a Town Hall Meeting featuring Congresswoman Barbara Lee (The ONLY person in congress to vote against the War in Iraq), Daniel Ellsberg (Political shit stirrer and author) and various other speakers. The subject was the significance of the "Downing Street Memo"…A lot of folks showed up…..from local politico's, concerned families, cute long haired hippy chicks, bespeckled intellectuals and little old ME! I'm always glad, in the face of such blatant Bush Administration Bullshit, to see the people actually come together and talk and listen…and yes …rage a little! Preaching to the Choir? Who cares…they showed up and so did I. And by the way, Barbara Lee is a TRUE PATRIOT!!

Well I decided to stay at the Grand Lake Theater after the meeting and watch the new futuristic thriller - "The Island" …and yes, I'm going to give away the ending………

THERE IS NO ISLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK that was easy ….now here's what happens:

You're on this gorgeous sleek graphite and teak speed boat called the "Renovatio" with a gorgeous and sleek blonde haired and botox lipped beauty….she's in flowing silk robes and you're about to make love….then suddenly everything goes underwater….this is the nightmare that Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor - "The Scarlett and the Black" - "Blue Juice" - "Star Wars") has been having…you see, he is living in a sanitized and protected environment created after the "Contamination"…a holocaust of immense proportions that destroyed all human life….except the lucky few who live here and walk around in slick white athletic outfits and white tennis shoes…….and under the watchful eye of their protectors (dressed in black silk jump suits). Lincoln Six Echo likes Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson - "Manny & Lo" - "Sponge Bob Square Pant" (voice) - "Eight Legged Freaks" - "Lost in Translation" (one of my favorite movies and Scarletts best)) and they talk to each other a lot and she sneaks him bacon every once in a while.

Life is actually a boring routine except that there is a lottery every so often, where some lucky soul gets picked to leave the protected space and go to the "Island"…an outdoor paradise that is the only uncontaminated place left on earth! Wow…people's names get picked and they leave and you never see them again……Poor Lincoln and his damn curiosity….he decides to do some poking around and gets clearance to go down into the grimy bowels of the sealed world and runs into a grimy mechanic named McCord (Steve Buscemi - "Reservoir Dogs" - "Fargo" - "The Sopranos" - "Pulp Fiction" (One of my favorite all time flicks)) who looks a lot different than everybody else and likes to stare at the naked girl pictures on his wall…..well McCord gives Lincoln a security key with which he proceeds to start poking around and finds out that the people that have won the lottery are actually "Clones" who are being killed for their body parts…..OH SHIT……Lincoln realizes that he's a clone and so is Jordan who has just won the lottery and they are taking her to "the Island" which is a dissection lab to kill her and harvest her organs….OH SHIT….

So Lincoln runs back and gets Jordan and they climb through the huge vent pipes while being chased by the black suits and suddenly find themselves plopped out in the Arizona Desert….of course they wander into a "Biker Bar" with strippers and there they find McCord in the "Can" taking a "Dump"……McCord clues them in to the fact that they aren't really human and that the place that they've been living is nothing more than an advanced cloning facility where rich people can have a health insurance policy for 5 million dollars that creates their own clone and thus the exact body parts they will need to extend their life….whew…this is a lot to take in for a couple of "outed" clones…who are actually flukes because they have human emotions and really want to live!

The rest of the movie is a mind numbing non-stop car, helicopter, jet motorcycle, hummer and train chase through the streets of 2019 Los Angeles……(you really get your money's worth if you like continual high speed catastrophic crash and burn shit). Until finally Lincoln gets to face his own self…in the form of Lincoln the rich, spoiled, over-sexed inventor who lives in the coolest concrete mansion and who wants the clone for the new liver he needs because of the damn hepatitis he contracted from having so much SEX!

Lincoln and Jordan go back to the "LAB" to rescue all the other poor unfortunate clones and they end up saving all of them from the bad guys and they spill out of the same vent pipe onto the ruddy red Arizona desert in their little white suits looking pretty weird…the loonies have escaped from the nut house! And by the way, Lincoln and Jordan end up having SEX….OUT

Purple Gene gives "The Island" 7 little lady bug like robots that go into Lincoln's eye for imaging (he later pisses them out) out of 10 for being actually two movies for the price of one!

Spoof of Bush Wins Contest

Faux Faulkner

A scathing parody that likens resident Bush to the "idiot" in William Faulkner's novel "The Sound and the Fury" has won this year's Faulkner write-alike contest - and touched off a literary spat.

Organizers of the Faux Faulkner competition are accusing Hemispheres, the United Airlines magazine that has sponsored the contest for six years, of playing politics by not putting Sam Apple's "The Administration and the Fury" in its print edition - only on its Web site.

"One of the things they asked was that we didn't have profanity or any obvious sexual content. We watch for that. But anything else, like a political subject, was funny, it was parody. ... We felt that that shouldn't be censored," said Larry Wells, who organizes the contest with his wife, Dean Faulkner Wells, Faulkner's niece.

Larry Wells said Apple's piece won the contest not because of its political content but because it mirrors the labyrinthine language of the Nobel laureate.

Art Director Fired After 'Daily Show' Interview

Susan Buzzi

An art gallery director says she was fired for talking on television about a sexually explicit caricature involving resident Bush, an Arab sheik and a barrel of oil.

Susan Buzzi was the Broward Art Guild's executive director and had worked with its gallery for more than 10 years.

Buzzi and Alfred Phillips, who painted the piece, were among several people interviewed by comedian Ed Helms in a spoof news report of the art controversy on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" several weeks ago.

Buzzi said she was told Wednesday that her "services are no longer required" at the gallery.

Launches HIV/AIDS Program

Bill Clinton

Former President Bill Clinton launched a program Saturday that will nearly double the number of children receiving treatment for HIV infection in Kenya by the end of the year.

Some 100,000 children are infected with HIV, but only 1,200 receive treatment. The Clinton Foundation's Pediatric HIV/ AIDS Initiative will provide treatment to an additional 1,000 children in this East African nation.

The initiative is part of the foundation's goal to get 10,000 children on anti-retroviral treatment in at least 10 countries by the end of 2005.

Former Doors Drummer Wins Suit

John Densmore

John Densmore, former drummer for The Doors, won a permanent injunction on Friday preventing his bandmates from using the rock group's name while touring with a revamped version of the legendary 1960s act.

The Los Angeles Superior Court order also requires keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger, who have been touring as The Doors of the 21st Century, to turn over all the profits earned by the new combo to the original Doors partnership.

He teamed up with Morrison's estate -- represented by the parents of both Morrison and Morrison's late wife, Pamela Courson -- to sue Krieger and Manzarek in early 2003.

Under an agreement struck in 1971, the year Morrison died in Paris, all three surviving members as well as the Morrison estate must sign off on any use of the Doors name and logo.

Arianna Huffington: In the Interest of Full Disclosure

Russert Watch

Since I'm still away, this weekend's Russert Watch will once again be in the masterful hands of Harry Shearerlast week when he pointed out the despicable-yet-delicious way that Russert, in interviewing Matt Cooper, completely failed to mention the fact that he too had testified in front of the grand jury investigating the Plame leak.

The latest twist in this tale that the blogosphere has been buzzing about (check out FishBowlDC, Jim Gilliam, JABBS and Digby has put Russert smack in the middle of the story, with reports that his testimony puts him at odds with Scooter Libby's testimony.

Gee, it seems like the kind of thing a journalist might want to tell his audience -- especially given the fact that there is no grand jury rule compelling witnesses to stay mum about their testimony. But he said not a word about it last week. Hell, he didn't even whip out the old "In the interest of full disclosure, I should point out…"

For the rest, Russert Watch

Judge Praises Rehab Progress

Courtney Love

A judge has praised Courtney Love for making progress in a court-ordered drug treatment program, Love's lawyer said outside court Friday.

Love, 41, did not appear in Superior Court for the status report on how she is doing. But her lawyer, Michael Rosenstein, said that after reviewing her case, a judge concluded the singer-actress was "progressing well."

A separate progress report hearing, related to a case in which Love pleaded guilty to possessing a forged prescription, is set for Aug. 10 in Beverly Hills.

Pentagon Blocks Release: Here's Why

The Darby Photos

So what is shown on the 87 photographs and four videos from Abu Ghraib prison that the Pentagon, in an eleventh hour move, blocked from release this weekend? One clue: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress last year, after viewing a large cache of unreleased images: "I mean, I looked at them last night, and they're hard to believe." They show acts "that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane," he added.

A Republican Senator suggested the same day they contained scenes of "rape and murder." No wonder Rumsfeld commented then, "If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse."

Yesterday, news emerged that lawyers for the Pentagon had refused to cooperate with a federal judge's order to release dozens of unseen photographs and videos from Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq by Saturday. The photos were among thousands turned over by the key "whistleblower" in the scandal, Specialist Joseph M. Darby. Just a few that were released to the press sparked the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal last year, and the video images are said to be even more shocking.

To get a sense of what may be shown in these images, one has to go back to press reports from when the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal was still front page news.

"'The American public needs to understand we're talking about rape and murder here. We're not just talking about giving people a humiliating experience,' Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told reporters after Rumsfeld testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee. 'We're talking about rape and murder -- and some very serious charges.'

Back In Rehab

Tom Sizemore

A California judge granted actor Tom Sizemore's request to stay in a psychiatric hospital for round-the-clock treatment of depression and drug abuse on Friday after he admitted to breaching probation on a drug conviction.

But the judge refused to rule out the possibility that Sizemore, 43, who played soldiers in "Saving Private Ryan" and "Black Hawk Down," might be sent to prison in the future, even if he completes his drug treatment without further lapses.

The actor acknowledged violating the terms of his probation by trying to fake the results of a court-ordered drug test using a prosthetic penis similar to a device sold over the Internet under the brand name Whizzinator.
