The Middle East is in crisis. Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice will
finally be in transit--will she be able to do ANYTHING? She meets with
Israeli and Palestinian leaders and then head to Rome.
Why has the U.S. Government waited so long?
Hezbollah continues to fire missiles; Israel is poised to invade to protect
its borders and people. Lebanon is spiraling into humanitarian disaster.
Iraq and Afghanistan are also in trouble.
We need to talk. And talk we will to Cassandra Nelson of Mercy Corps who is
in Lebanon delivering food and water; and with Rabbi Daniel Weiner of Faith
Forward who just returned from Israel with his family.
We will review the news with Ed Schultz on the Monday Take at 8; and most
importantly talk about what this means to all of us around the world.
Bravo to you for demonstrating against GW on his fundraising visit to CO;
bravo to Congresswoman Diana DeGette who will give the Democratic response
on Saturday to Bush's devastating veto of the stem cell bill she helped
sponsor.

PAUL KRUGMAN: The Price of Fantasy (The New York Times)
Today we call them neoconservatives, but when the first George Bush was president, those who believed that America could remake the world to its liking with a series of splendid little wars - people like Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld - were known within the administration as "the crazies." Grown-ups in both parties rejected their vision as a dangerous fantasy.
Kristoffer A. Garin: On the great Ukrainian bride hunt (harpers.org)
"These are not American women," our guide was telling us. "They do not care about your age, looks, or money. And you are not going to have to talk to them for half an hour and then have your testicles handed back to you! Let me tell you: over here, you're the commodity; you're the piece of meat. I've lived in St. Petersburg for two years, and I wouldn't date an American woman right now if you paid me!"
BILL ZWECKER: The laughs in 'Clerks II' prove Smith's no slacker (suntimes.com)
"Clerks II" touches on some very edgy sexual issues -- including, but not limited to bestiality (described here as "interspecies relationships"). Though the laughs are non-stop and the dialogue is brilliant, this film's "R" rating is there for a reason and every potential moviegoer -- no matter their age -- should be prepared to be exposed to some very weird stuff.
Mr. Smith Goes to the Multiplex (compiled by Jim Emerson)
It's already semi-legendary, in a puny sort of way. A mere 40 minutes (or an undendurable 40 minutes, depending on your point of view) into a New York press screening of "Clerks II," "Good Morning, America" movie critic Joel Siegel stormed out, exclaiming: "Time to go! First movie I've walked out of in 30 [bleeping] years!"
Roger Ebert: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981; A Great Movie)
Steven Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" plays like an anthology of the best parts from all the Saturday matinee serials ever made. It takes place in Africa, Nepal, Egypt, at sea and in a secret submarine base. It contains trucks, bulldozers, tanks, motorcycles, ships, subs, Pan Am Clippers, and a Nazi flying wing. It has snakes, spiders, booby traps and explosives. The hero is trapped in a snake pit, and the heroine finds herself assaulted by mummies. The weapons range from revolvers and machineguns to machetes and whips. And there is the supernatural, too, as the Ark of the Covenant triggers an eerie heavenly fire that bolts through the bodies of the Nazis.
Monique Harvey: The Fantastic Tova Fox (peak.sfu.ca)
Tova Fox: Judy [Carter]'s approach to comedy is to hit you on the gut level. Her comedy is not about airplane jokes or 7-11 jokes, it's about your life experiences. She takes what has happened in her life and turns them into jokes. She is also a magician, and one part of her show is her death-defying escape from her grandmother's girdle. She's really multi- talented.

Recounts O'Really Non-Showdown
Keith Olbermann
Keith Olbermann was eagerly anticipating his first meeting with Bill O'Reilly. It didn't happen.
The feuding cable TV personalities both attended a charity fundraiser thrown by New York Yankees manager Joe Torre last November. Olbermann picked up his name tag and spotted O'Reilly's tag on the table.
"He never got within 20 feet of me," Olbermann told the Television Critics Association's summer meeting Saturday. "I swear to God, every time I looked up, he would suddenly look down. He was staring over at me. But we're about the same height, so I really don't think he's going to come talk to me. If I were about a foot shorter, I'm sure there would be a confrontation of some sort."
Olbermann opened his session by whipping out a mask of O'Reilly - a poke at Fox asking journalists to accept handout photos of TCA news conferences from photographers the network had hired.

Tina Fey
Tina Fey is leaving the anchor chair at "Saturday Night Live."

Also leaving "SNL" is regular Rachel Dratch, who plays a sketch actress on Fey's new sitcom about a fictional late-night show.

Participated In Philly March
Will Smith
Will Smith returned to his hometown to participate in a march against violence Saturday.
The actor and rapper said he wanted to do something about the violence in the city, which had 380 killings in 2005 and appears likely to top that number this year.
"We're going to take this walk, hopefully draw a little attention to the problem and get some solutions," Smith said as he walked with his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, in West Philadelphia, along with local officials and members of the community.

Whoring The Memory
Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix, the greatest guitarist in rock 'n' roll was also quite the snappy dresser -- taking the stage in groovy threads befitting his role as a leading light of the psychedelic era -- and now his name will adorn a fashion line coming out in the fall.
The Jimi Hendrix Collection, a line of high-end leather jackets and handbags, will make its presence known in department and specialty stores.
A collaboration between designer Gina Alexander, Janie Hendrix (Jimi's sister and the executor of his estate) and rock photographer Robert M. Knight, the collection premiered July 16-18 at the Project Show in New York.
The line consists of five jackets, 12 better designer handbags and 16 junior market handbags, according to Alexander. Each item will feature one of three rare images of the legendary guitarist, including onstage shots from his 1968 shows at San Francisco's Winterland venue.

Baby News
DiFranco - Napolitano
Ani DiFranco announced she's pregnant while being honored for her contributions to the feminist movement at the National Organization for Women's 40th annual convention.
The 35-year-old singer said Friday she is due in February. The baby's father, Mike Napolitano, produced her upcoming album "Reprieve."
Latifa Lyles, NOW's vice president of membership, presented the award and called Difranco an inspiration, not only for her music but for her independent ideals. DiFranco founded her own record label, Righteous Babe, in 1990 after becoming frustrated with other music labels.

'44 Oscar Up For Auction
Leo McCary
The best director Oscar for the 1944 Bing Crosby film "Going My Way" is going on the auction block.
Online bidding for the golden statuette awarded to Leo McCary begins July 31 and ends Aug. 16, said Doug Allen, president of Illinois-based Mastro Auctions, which is handling the sale. The minimum opening bid is $25,000, although Allen said he believes the statuette is worth six figures.
A collector who wishes to remain anonymous decided to put the Oscar up for sale. Allen said the collector bought it from McCary's family about five years ago. The director died in 1969.
Although the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences frowns on the sale of Oscars, it wasn't until 1950 that the Academy began requiring winners to sign statements promising neither they nor their heirs would sell one.

Family Vows To Continue Battle
Anna Nicole Smith
A month after the death of E. Pierce Marshall, who feuded for years with Anna Nicole Smith over his father's oil fortune, his family says they are more committed than ever in their legal battle against the former Playboy playmate.
"Nothing has changed from the family's standpoint as to how this case should end up and we will handle it as Pierce did, in his honor," the family told The Dallas Morning News in a written statement.
Marshall, the son of tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, died June 20 at age 67. His family said his death was caused by a brief and extremely aggressive infection.

Stalker Gets Reciprocal Restraining Order
John Cusack
A woman John Cusack claims is stalking him has taken out a court order barring the actor from coming near her.
Cusack was granted a temporary restraining order Tuesday stipulating that Emily Leatherman, 31, stay at least 500 feet away from him, his home, his work, his car and any company or office where he does business.
After the 40-year-old actor sought the order last month, Leatherman made a similar request, which was granted by a Superior Court judge on July 14 pending an August hearing.

Zippo
Derrick Stainton can't stop talking about his old flames. He's got more than 1,000 of them at home in Scotland. "My daughter thinks I'm crazy," the 54-year-old welder said. The objects of his affection: Zippo lighters, 1,056 of them to be exact. And he's not alone in his hobby.
Thousands of fellow fans, dealers and curiosity-seekers are gathering this weekend here to celebrate the shiny, rectangular windproof lighters that flick open with a distinctive clicking sound.
Fanatics congregate at Zippo Manufacturing Co. headquarters in this northwest Pennsylvania city every other year for an international "swap meet."
They stroll around under huge tents to look at seemingly endless number of display cases in search of a must-have Zippo and trade stories with other enthusiasts. The meet is held in conjunction with a similar gathering for collectors of W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co. knives, which is owned by Zippo.

BFD is the official designation for the airport in Bradford - initials that always makes the LA SkyCaps smile while checking my baggage through.
There are wonderful displays of Case Cutlery, Zippo lighters & some locally produced bricks - not quite standard fare for an airport these days.
It also has a fabulous restaurant - nothing too fancy, but most everything is cooked from scratch by a little old woman in the kitchen.
My all-time favorite airport.
Concert For NBC
Madonna
Madonna is bringing her "Confessions" tour to network television. A two-hour special will be taped this summer at Wembley Stadium in London and shown in November on NBC.
The network is billing Madonna's special as the first-ever broadcast network performance by the Grammy-winning singer.
The special will feature songs from Madonna's latest album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor," along with some of her greatest hits.
