Purple Gene Reviews
'Hendrix: Band of Gypsys'
Purple Gene's review of the Music documentary movie "Hendrix: Band of Gypsys" (1999) Directed by Bob Smeaton:
I remember in 1967 going to the Fillmore auditorium in San Francisco to see the "QuickSilver Messenger Service" and the "Jefferson Airplane". There was a group that was the opener called "The Jimi Hendrix Experience"…..I thought…what a dumb name!
Well I was up front in the mosh when this afro mustachioed head banded paisley ruffled shirted plaid bell bottomed high heeled booted dude swaggered onto the stage playing a right handed guitar backwards….."Wild Thing…you make my heart ring…you make everything GROOVY" Holy Jesus on "window Pane" !!!! I am witnessing stage presence like never ever before…this guy ruled!!!! And the guitar work was simply amazing!!!!!!!!!!
We all know about Jimi's career….Monterey Pops Festival burning guitar….."Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock…."Hey Joe"…"Purple Haze"…"let me Stand next to your Fire"…"The Wind Cries Mary" great stuff in just 2 years…then Jimi fired his all white backup band Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell……He got Buddy Miles and Billy Cox…2 great bluesmen to form his new Trio…"The Band of Gypsy's"..this short period is the focus of the movie "Hendrix: Band of Gypsy's".
I don't know why this documentary was ever made in the first place…almost thirty years after the forming of the "Band of Gypsy's" ? It is largely interviews with present day guitar player like Lenny Kravitz, Vernon Reid ("Living Color") and Slash ("Guns and Roses") and Miles and Cox and pretty much a glowing account of what a great innovative rock and roll guitar player that Hendrix was and how he was struggling with his blackness. There was some excerpts from the Fillmore East New Years Eve live show in 1970..but the rest of this movie was banal and boring…..They conveniently omitted the fact that Jimi OD'ed on Heroin and had been in a lot of personal pain and confusion toward the end of his life. It seemed that it was a classic struggle with his record company and contracts and Jimi's need to find his identity.
Purple Gene give "Hendix: Band of Gypsys" 5 left handed guitar picks out of 10 for being an empty and abbreviated mess….which Jimi Hendrix was NOT!

Bars Sports Reporters From Award Voting
LA Times
The Los Angeles Times on Friday announced a new ethics policy that bars reporters from voting on awards and rankings such as college football's Heisman Trophy and Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame.
Sports reporters, and other correspondents, can petition the managing editor seeking an exemption, the newspaper said.
"The basic principle is that reporters shouldn't be part of a story that they cover," the newspaper's assistant managing editor Marc Duvoisin told Reuters.
The policy also covers voting by the newspaper's movie critics in that industry's awards. Critics, however, are paid to have opinions and so would be more likely to be granted an exemption, he said.

Recalls Devastation
Hiroshima Survivor
Shigeko Sasamori hopes her scarred body and gnarled fingers put a human face on the suffering caused by the creation of the atomic bomb, a weapon that was first tested 60 years ago in the New Mexico desert.
The 73-year-old woman was a schoolgirl on Aug. 6, 1945, when an American warplane dropped over Hiroshima the first of two nuclear bombs used against Japan.
She traveled to New Mexico this past week for the 60th anniversary of the atomic tests at Trinity to ask scientists to stop nuclear warfare.
Sasamori was one of 25 "Hiroshima Maidens" brought to the United States for reconstructive surgery in 1955 by American editor and author Norman Cousins, who she describes as her adoptive father. She eventually settled in the U.S. and became a nurse.

Snarky Gossip
Paris Hilton
Is it possible that Paris Hilton's certain je ne sais quoi doesn't translate overseas? We hear that while partying with her fiancé Paris Latsis a few days ago at swank London nightspot Boujis (which touts itself as a club where "rules are broken"), the PDA-loving couple performed what appeared to be an impromptu sex show in their banquette. True to form, the stoic Brits didn't bat an eye. "She had her skirt hiked up and was grinding back-and forth on his lap. It was so obvious they wanted people to watch, but not many people were paying attention," says one eyewitness. "There's a million other girls like her in London-trashy girls with money who love to screw, like Tamara Beckwith. Paris isn't British, she's not a royal, and she has no class. Basically, no one cares about her here."
Meanwhile, we hear Hilton's trip to Greece in late June to meet her billionaire future in-laws didn't go over so well, either. "Paris thought she was going to sweep into town like a new Jackie O," our source says. "But she's such an idiot, she doesn't realize that the Greeks hated Jackie." Paris complained to pals that Latsis's relatives were "cold and aloof," asking her questions about subjects that "no one my age would ever talk about. Stuff like art and books and stuff."

Gets Star Near Walk of Fame
Disney
In honor of its 50th anniversary, Disneyland was given a star near the Hollywood Walk of Fame, making it the first company to receive the entertainment industry's most enduring symbol.
The star won't be on the Walk of Fame but on private property inches away.
"These are not Walk of Fame stars," said Johnny Grant, the 82-year-old honorary mayor of Hollywood whose committee oversees the selection of Walk of Fame recipients. "It's an award of excellence. It will be a Walk of Fame-type star."

Victor Edward Willis, the original policeman in the 1970s music group the Village People, was arrested by real police who allegedly found a gun and drugs in his convertible.
Willis, who co-wrote disco hits such as "Macho Man" and "In the Navy" before leaving the Village People in the late 1970s, was taken into custody Monday after an officer stopped his Chevrolet Corvette.
Police said Willis didn't have a valid license or identification and at first lied about his name and residence. Inside the car, the officer found a .45-caliber handgun as well as rock cocaine and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Why Do They Hate Veterans?
GOP
Fellow Republicans warned House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Majority Leader Tom DeLay more than a year ago that the government would come up short - by at least $750 million - for veterans' health care. The leaders' response: Fire the messengers.
Now that the Bush administration has acknowledged a shortfall of at least $1.2 billion, embarrassed Republicans are scrambling to fill the gap. Meanwhile, Democrats portray the problem as another example of the GOP and the White House taking a shortsighted approach to the cost of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and criticize their commitment to the troops.
New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith, as chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, had told the House GOP leadership that the Veterans Affairs Department needed at least $2.5 billion more in its budget. The Senate passed a bill with that increase; the House's bill was $750 million short.
Smith and 30 other Republicans wrote to their leaders in March 2004 to make the point that lawmakers who were not the usual outspoken advocates for veterans were troubled by the move. Failure to come up with the additional $2.5 billion, they contended, could mean higher co-payments and "rationing of health care services, leading to long waiting times or other equally unacceptable reductions in services to veterans."
Smith was rebuked by several Republicans for sounding the spending alarm, and House leaders yanked his chairmanship in January. Rep. Rob Simmons, R-Conn., lost his chairmanship of the VA health subcommittee, and Rep. Rick Renzi, R-Ariz., is no longer on the committee. They too had signed the letters to Hastert, R-Ill., and DeLay, R-Texas.

75 Years on Comics Pages
'Blondie'
Hard to believe it's been almost 75 years since ditzy flapper Blondie Boopadoop fell for bumbling Dagwood Bumstead in a love match made in the funny papers.
Now one of the most famous married couples in the world in the most widely read strip in comics history, Blondie and Dagwood are celebrating the milestone anniversary this summer in a running story line featuring cameos by their comics-page cohorts, whose creators also will pay tribute to "Blondie" by inviting the happy couple into their own panels.
Garfield, Beetle Bailey, Hagar the Horrible, baby Marvin, Dennis the Menace, Dilbert, the kid from "Zits" and others - a virtual who's who of the funnies - will drop in and out as the Bumsteads plan a huge party for an unspecified wedding anniversary to be celebrated in the Sunday comics Sept. 4.

Biblical Scroll Found in Israel
Fragments
A secretive encounter with a Bedouin in a desert valley led to the discovery of two fragments from a nearly 2,000-year-old parchment scroll - the first such finding in decades, an Israeli archaeologist said Friday.
The finding has given rise to hope that the Judean Desert may yield more treasures, said Professor Chanan Eshel, an archaeologist from Tel Aviv's Bar Ilan University.
The two small pieces of brown animal skin, inscribed in Hebrew with verses from the Book of Leviticus, are from "refugee" caves in Nachal Arugot, a canyon near the Dead Sea where Jews hid from the Romans in the second century, Eshel said in an interview with The Associated Press.
The scrolls are being tested by Israel's Antiquities Authority. Recently, several relics bearing inscriptions, including a burial box purported to belong to Jesus' brother James, were revealed as modern forgeries.
