. A lot of those visitors must have come through Google, which listed "Scientology" as the 10th-fastest-gaining query for the week of June 27. While most were just rubber-necking, surely some will buy the sales pitch.
Those looking to learn more about what makes Tom tick have also been heading to the bookstore. According to Barnes & Noble rep Mary Keating, "Sales of Dianetics in the last month have more than doubled. It took off in 1985 and has been a huge best-seller for about five years," she said. "It's a title we stock in all our stores at all times and we anticipate a strong year."
John Carmichael, a spokesperson for the Church, downplayed Cruise's influence, claiming "The popularity and uptrend was already there. Scientology is the largest-growing religion in the world," he said. (Hear that, Mormonism?) "All I can say is the people are here because of their huge interest in the church. Scientology has always been very, very popular."

Claim Labor Law Breaches
Reality TV Writers
A dozen writers who work in the booming arena of "reality" television have sued networks and production companies for what they say are violations of California labor law governing overtime wages and meal breaks.
The case, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, is part of a larger campaign by the union representing Hollywood screenwriters to organize the creative workers behind such programs as "Survivor," "The Bachelor," "The Apprentice" and "The Simple Life."
The suit seeks class-action status for reality TV staffers who toil anonymously to create dramatic tension -- and the artifice of spontaneity -- with such job titles as story editor, story producer, story assistant or segment producer.
The suit claims those workers routinely work more than 80 hours a week without overtime, are denied work breaks for meals and are required to falsify their time cards.
The lawsuit names four networks -- CBS, ABC, the WB and TBS -- as well as four production companies.

Getting Much-Needed Wash
Mount Rushmore
Call it a makeover of monumental proportions. A crew began a project Thursday to wash the granite faces of Mount Rushmore to remove decades of dirt, grime and lichens that can damage the complexion of the four presidents.
The workers began scaling the mountain and offered a demonstration of the pressure washing on Thursday, and plan to start the full-scale cleaning Friday. The job could take five weeks.
The washings are compliments of a German manufacturer of cleaning machines that has donated 80 such projects around the world, said Alfred Karcher GmbH & Co. KG spokesman Frank Schad. He said the company pressure washed the base of the Statue of Liberty two years ago and was looking for another interesting project to do in the United States.

Welsh Maze
Tom Jones
How unusual - a giant image of Welsh singing legend Tom Jones is at the centre of a newly-planted maze.
The tribute to Pontypridd-born Jones has been sown at a tourtist attraction to mark the superstar's 65th birthday.
When fully-grown, the maze, created in a five-acre maize field, will stand up to 13ft tall - although Jones' image can only be seen from the air.
Visitors tackling the puzzle, which is made up by over four miles of pathways, will be posed a series of pop music questions - including some about the singer.
It will be be open to the public from 16 July and remain open throughout the summer season before the maize is harvested at the end of August.

Faces More Charges
Man in Toilet
A man's arrest two weeks ago after being pulled from an outhouse toilet in New Hampshire has landed him in hot water in Maine. Gary Moody, 45, appeared Thursday in court on a charge of violating his probation by leaving the state and allegedly committing new crimes.
Moody has been free on $250 bail from Carroll County, N.H., where he faces two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of criminal trespass after being found June 26 in the waste tank of a pit toilet on U.S. Forest Service property in Albany, N.H.
Authorities arrived at the scene after a 14-year-old girl heard a noise in the toilet and saw a face looking up at her. Moody was removed by police and was hosed down by firefighters before being arrested.

Persona Non Grata
Corn Cob Bob
An ethanol industry group is steaming after its mascot, Corn Cob Bob, was declared persona non grata at the Canada Day celebrations in the nation's capital.
The Canadian Renewable Fuels Association charges that Corn Cob Bob was excluded from the festivities because event sponsor Shell Canada wanted him shucked out.
Corn Cob Bob is on a fuel's errand, making the rounds of events this summer to promote ethanol made from corn, handing out balloons and temporary tattoos, and teaching children about renewable energy.

Activists Already Appointed
Judges
No need to wait until President Bush appoints a Supreme Court justice to see how he will make his mark on the federal judiciary. One level down, dozens of conservative appeals court judges appointed by Bush already are helping to shape the law in ways that ultimately could have as much, and in some ways even more, impact than the nine justices of the nation's highest court.
Since Bush's appellate judges have only gradually taken their seats on benches around the country, and the cases that they draw run the gamut, it's still early to chart their impact on specific issues. But already it is clear that these judges make up a solidly conservative crowd that tends to lean Bush's way on the big issues of the day.
So far, Bush's appointees to the appeals court are showing patterns very close to judges of his Republican predecessors in ideologically contested cases, according to law professor Cass Sunstein at the University of Chicago, where the Chicago Judges Project is tracking the federal judiciary.
Because appeals courts rule on thousands of cases each year, compared to only about 75 a year decided by the Supreme Court, the impact of Bush's appellate judges could be far-reaching.
For a lot more, Judges
