Spencer Reiss: His Space (wired.com)
Twilight of the media moguls? Not for this guy. With the $580 million purchase of MySpace, News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch is betting he can transform a free social network into a colossal marketing machine.
Go out tonight and take that pre-teen boy who likes to play video games and blow shit up…..take that "right wing" neighbor who has a "Support our Troops" sticker on the back of his SUV…..take that babbling liberal idiot that likes lattes and Hillary….take anyone you can to see Deborah Scranton's Documentary called "The War Tapes" …
Side note to my brother Frank…"I fucking dare you to go see this movie!
Did anyone see the movie "Born into Brothels"? Director Zana Briski went to Calcutta, India and tried to get "Imbedded" in the "Red Light District" so she could photograph the prostitutes….it turned out that the women really didn't want anyone coming in there and "shooting them in all their degradation…so Zana did a brilliant thing…she gave cameras to all the children of the prostitutes and had them take pictures of the amazing lives of this "Caste" of characters.
Well, Deborah Scranton got supposedly embedded with the American troops in Iraq…but she wanted something more than the CNN swag…so she passed out digital video cameras to 3 members of the National Guard forces to shoot their personal day to day account of what is "really" going on with "Operation Iraqi Freedom"
No Bullshit…No Politics…no fucking phony photo - ops…….this is "The War Tapes"!
Sergeant Steve Pink is a carpenter from New Hampshire who enlisted as a weekend warrior with the guard…quick witted and aware of the risk, he signed on for active duty for a year…leaving his girlfriend behind to worry….
Specialist Mike Moriarity is a fork lift operator who got laid off. He informed his family that he was gonna go to Iraq with his unit…leaving his wife and young son behind to worry.
Seargeant Zack Bazzi is a Lebanese-American who speaks Arabic and leaves the University to head over to Iraq for a tour of duty…leaving his mother behind to worry…
Roll the cameras…………………..
Guys playing guitar at night….playing soccer in the day…goofing off…eating a Halliburton breakfast ($29.50 a pop) and every morning hopping into a HumVee to guard convoys of supplies and everyday these young and Heroic Americans risk their lives with IED (improvised Explosive Devises), rocket fire, mortar attacks and just plain gunfire to carry out the orders they are given…..
Say what you want about the War in Iraq……I fucking love these kids….how idealistic they are…and how much faith they place in the hands of their superiors….I still want them all to come home NOW!!!!!!
But just for a moment, through the eyes and the lens of real warriors, we get to see what is actually going on over there….from the confusion, the conflagration, the culture and the carnage…..if you stop for a moment and think too deeply, you will weep and weep and then you will get angry…and finally…you will appreciate these kids….
The movie follows all 3 guys back to their homes and families after their time in Iraq…and you can't help but realize their sacrifice…..
Please …please…take someone and go see this movie.
Purple Gene gives "The War Tapes" 10 devastating chunks of shrapnel in the face of an innocent Iraqi girl out of 10 for showing first hand what an insane situation this fucking war is and make no mistake…..it is all for Oil!

Larry King's interview with resident Bush and first lady Laura Bush came close but didn't quite beat Fox News Channel's 9 p.m. champ, "Hannity & Colmes."
"Larry King Live" averaged 1.48 million viewers Thursday, including 370,000 in the adults 25-54 demographic, according to data released Friday by Nielsen Media Research. But it wasn't enough in either measure to beat "Hannity & Colmes," which averaged 1.54 million viewers including 416,000 in the demo.
MSNBC was far behind with 373,000 viewers -- 101,000 adults 25-54 -- with "Scarborough Country." Rita Cosby's last "Live & Direct" an hour later fell from that, averaging 285,000 viewers, 90,000 in the demo. Cosby's show was canceled in favor of taped documentary-style programs on MSNBC between 10 p.m.-midnight nightly, which Cosby will anchor.

U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Enabler) of Utah, a musician in his own right, helped secure the release of Atlanta R&B producer Dallas Austin from a Dubai jail after a drug conviction, the senator's office confirmed Saturday.
In a statement released through his staff, the conservative Republican said he was contacted by Austin's attorneys, then called the ambassador and consul of the United Arab Emirates in Washington on Austin's behalf.
A Grammy winner who has produced hits for Madonna, Pink and TLC, Austin was arrested May 19 and convicted of drug possession for bringing 1.26 grams of cocaine into Dubai.
Beyond saying Hatch has "good relations with the ambassador and other good people in Dubai," his office gave The Associated Press no specifics about Hatch's dealings with the Dubai government.
Penny Lane will keep its name. Liverpool officials said Saturday they would modify a proposal to rename streets linked to the slave trade when they realized the road made famous by the 1967 Beatles song was one of them.
The unassuming suburban avenue was named for James Penny, a wealthy 18th-century slave ship owner. Liverpool, the Beatles' northern English hometown, was once a major hub for the slave trade.
"I don't think anyone would seriously consider renaming Penny Lane," said city council member Barbara Mace, who has been pressing to get rid of names linked to slavery. "My proposal is to rename several of the streets and to replace them with the names of people who have done something positive."
Liverpool was an important port of call for slave ships traveling between Africa and the Americas. During the second half of the 18th century, much of the city's economy was based on the trade.

Rhino has set an August 15 release date for expanded editions of the first two albums from TV stars turned pop idols the Monkees. Both will be issued as two-disc packages including stereo and mono mixes plus rare and previously unreleased bonus tracks.
Owing to a history of intra-band acrimony, the Monkees last toured with all four original members in 1997. Minus Michael Nesmith, members Dolenz, Tork and Davy Jones subsequently hit the road on several occasions but have no plans to work together in the future.
"I would not work with those guys again if my life depended on it," Jones recently told Scripps Howard News Service. "I can't be responsible for their attitudes and the way they treat people."
An aspiring Iranian-American filmmaker who spent nearly two months in a prison in Iraq without being charged has sued Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and other military officials, calling the government's detention policies unconstitutional.
Cyrus Kar, 45, of Los Angeles seeks unspecified damages and sweeping changes in the government's detention policies overseas.
Kar was taken into custody in May 2005 after he visited Iraq to make a documentary film about Cyrus the Great, the Persian king who wrote the world's first human rights charter. Potential bomb parts were found in a taxi in which Kar was riding.
He was released July 10 after his family sued, accusing the federal government of violating his civil rights and holding him after the FBI cleared him of suspicion. He is a former U.S. Navy SEAL, according to news reports.
The new lawsuit said his 55-day detention violated not only his civil rights, but also the Geneva Convention and the law of nations.

The $350 million acquisition of House of Blues Entertainment is the latest move in a buying spree by Live Nation, already the world's largest promoter and venue operator.
Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino told Billboard that the HOB deal, announced July 5, shows the difference between the new, free-standing "nimble and focused" Live Nation and its pre-spinoff incarnation, Clear Channel Entertainment.
If completed, the deal would be the largest in the concert business since the days of promoter consolidation that greeted the new millennium. It confirms a new acquisitive stance by Live Nation, which recently bought a controlling interest in the touring division of Michael Cohl's Toronto-based Concert Productions International and a 50 percent interest in CPI's Grand Entertainment division.

A federal judge on Friday ordered a bankruptcy trustee takeover of Marion "Suge" Knight's Death Row Records, saying the record label has undergone gross mismanagement.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Ellen Carroll made the ruling as part of proceedings initiated when the rap label filed for bankruptcy in April. Carroll said the label's accounting practices were in disarray and noted that Knight testified he hadn't reviewed the financial statements in a decade.
"It seems apparent there is no one at the helm," she said, adding there appears to have been gross mismanagement, allowing her to take away Knight's control.
A small oil painting by American artist James McNeill Whistler sold for just over $1 million US at an auction house in western New York state, earning more than six times the expected price, an auction official said.
The painting sold Friday is an 18-by-25 centimetre oil on wood panel called Violet and Blue Among the Rollers from 1893. It shows a scene off the coast of France.
Sam Cottone, auctioneer for Cottone Auctions of Mount Morris, N.Y., thought the painting would go for between $100,000 and $150,000.

The syndicator of Ann Coulter's newspaper column is looking into allegations that the right-wing pundit has lifted material from other sources.
"We are reviewing the material and expect to have a response some time next week," Kathie Kerr, a spokeswoman for Universal Press Syndicate, told The Associated Press on Friday.
The New York Post and the Web sites Raw Story and the Rude Pundit have raised numerous questions about Coulter's columns, which appear in more than 100 newspapers, and her best-selling "Godless," already notorious for the author's calling four 9/11 widows, who supported Democrat John Kerry for president in 2004, "harpies" thriving on their husbands' demise.
Coulter's career has rarely suffered despite numerous questions about her accuracy and her pitiless remarks about political opponents, including an open wish for the bombing of The New York Times building. An exception was in 2001, soon after the Sept. 11 attacks, when Coulter was fired by the conservative National Review Online for writing about the hijackers: "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."
