Live 8
Hey, Marty...
Just one viewers opinion... I liked most of Live 8, although it would have been nice if VH1 hadn't kept interrupting the show. Pink Floyd was amazing, the Who were great, U2 was great, Sting was great, and McCartney still has it. It's nice to see that some of those old geezers still can rock and roll as the Masters. You're never too old to rock and roll if you're too young to die. ;-)
Pity ABC took those great performances and shrunk it to two hours (less when you consider they had advertisements every other song). Not everyone can stream AOL (not easy on dial-up).
I wasn't expecting much but it turned out to be well worth the price of admission.
I wonder if Bush and Blair watched it. Even if they did, I wonder if they "got it".
I doubt it.
ducks
Thanks, ducks!
With my crappy dial-up I didn't even bother trying to listen, but I did catch most of the abomination on ABC.
Jeez, leave it Disney to cheap it up & stink it up.
Looked like it was directed by someone's kid with connections, but no talent or ability. I pity the poor editor(s).
And, talk about bullshit - how about censoring 'Pink Floyd' during "Money"?

Oh, Marty.
You have GOT to find a picture of Kim Sam-soon for us. Your news tease was too tantalizing not to have a picture.

According to Mr. Bush, the nation now has no choice except to keep fighting the war he wanted to fight.

Re: Eric Estrada
Marty,
I saw Eric Estrada doing an infomercial for Hot Springs, Arkansas.
William
Thanks, William!
Went a-googling this afternoon, and came across these 'Erik Estrada' recommended properties:
Affordable Hot Springs Village Arkansas Land For Sale
Ocean Shores Land - Tour Ocean Shores - ocean shores, washington, Ocean Shores properties for sale
California Pines California Land For Sale - California Pines Real Estate
Lehigh Land - lehigh acres, florida, Lehigh Acres fl properties for sale
Pagosa Lakes Realestate Pagosa Springs Home sites for sale in Colorado
A bit more googling brought up this:
California Pines - Ridiculous Infomercial Review
and
California firm snatches up Angel Fire property
and
National Recreational Properties
But, the best & most damning is:
Visions of a vacation getaway, a nest for retirement or an investment in rural land have lured thousands of buyers to California Pines.
But more than three decades after a now-departed developer filed plans for a subdivision here, the promise appears little more than a mirage in the high desert.
In a development platted for 15,000 lots, fewer than 400 houses dot the hills or surround the glorified lake, a muddy cattle reservoir that shrivels in the heat.
That hasn't stopped Jeffrey Frieden and Robert Friedman, two Orange County entrepreneurs who once sold stereos and back rubs, from resurrecting sales in this and other left-for-dead subdivisions across the country.
From Florida to Washington state -- and coming soon to developments in other states -- their Irvine-based company has sold thousands of lots in subdivisions that mostly predate planning laws requiring sewer, water and power.
Through the Internet and television infomercials in English and Spanish featuring faded actor Erik Estrada, their company, National Recreational Properties Inc., is aggressively marketing land that looks cheap to distant buyers.

Plays Mini-Set at Iceland Terminal
Bruce Springsteen
After playing to sold-out audiences throughout Europe, Bruce Springsteen added one last impromptu gig to his overseas itinerary: an airport terminal in Iceland. &&
Springsteen was headed back to the United States after playing a show in Berlin when his plane stopped early Wednesday to refuel at Keflavik International Airport. The Boss strolled into the terminal with his acoustic guitar and played a six-song set for the airport's overnight shift, an airport official confirmed.
The 2 a.m. mini-set reportedly included Springsteen staples "Dancing in the Dark," "Bobby Jean" and "This Hard Land," along with "Working on the Highway," "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?" and "I'm on Fire."

Judge Urged to Dismiss Suit Against
Michael Moore
A lawyer for Michael Moore urged a federal judge Friday to dismiss a libel lawsuit against the documentary filmmaker filed by the brother of Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols.
Moore attorney Herschel Fink argued during a hearing that James Nichols' claims "range from the frivolous to the silly," and that Moore only reported the truth and his constitutionally protected opinion in the 2002 film "Bowling for Columbine."
Among the items in question in Nichols' lawsuit are Moore's use of the term "practice bombs" in the movie to refer to explosives the Nichols brothers and McVeigh made on a farm prior to the Oklahoma City bombing.

Pursuing Paparazzi Bill
California
A bill has been introduced in the California Legislature that would make paparazzi photographers liable when they engage in assaultive behavior during the pursuit of celebrities.
AB 381, from Assemblywoman Cindy Montanez, D-San Fernando, would subject a photographer to civil damages if an assault is committed during the pursuit of a photograph. In addition, the photographer would have to forfeit any compensation for the picture, some of which can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
In addition to losing the proceeds from the sale of a photograph, AB 381 would entitle a victim to seek treble general damages and punitive damages.

Sets Record in Pi Recitation
Akira Haraguchi
A Japanese psychiatric counselor has recited pi to 83,431 decimal places from memory, breaking his own personal best of 54,000 digits and setting an unofficial world record, a media report said Saturday.
Akira Haraguchi, 59, had begun his attempt to recall the value of pi - a mathematical value that has an infinite number of decimal places - at a public hall in Chiba city, east of Tokyo, on Friday morning and appeared to give up by noon after only reaching 16,000 decimal places, the Tokyo Shimbun said on its Web site.
But a determined Haraguchi started anew and had broken his old record on Friday evening, about 11 hours after first sitting down to his task, the paper said.
If verified and recognized by the Guinness Book of Records, Haraguchi's feat would beat his own previous best - currently under review - of 54,000 digits. The official current record-holder, also Japanese, calculated pi from memory to 42,195 decimal places in 1995.

Celebrate 10th Anniversary
Redneck Games
In his garage, Melvin Davis keeps 230 trophies he's won racing motorcycles, go-karts and pickup trucks. But he's best known for a sport that earned him four trophies topped with crushed Bud Lite cans.
"Yeah, looking back on it I'm proud. But when I done it I felt a little silly," said Davis, 68. "People were going, `There's the bobbing-for-pigs-feet champion!'"
Bobbing for pig feet, the mudpit belly-flop, the armpit serenade - they're all part of the Redneck Games, a series of good ole'ympic events for the ain't-so-athletic celebrating their 10th year in middle Georgia.
Started as a Southern-fried spoof of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, with a propane torch lighting a ceremonial barbecue grill, the gag games draw tourists like moths to a backyard bug-zapper.

Teacher Used Sick Days for Pro Wrestling
'Matt Striker'
A high school social studies teacher took 11 sick days so he could perform as a professional wrestler with moves he called the "lungblower" and the "over drive," investigators said.
The school system is seeking reimbursement from Matthew Kaye, 31, who has resigned.
According to investigators, Kaye told school officials he was taking the sick days in December and February to care for an ill sister, and he sometimes provided doctors' notes. They said they later discovered that his wrestling Web site listed him as being on tour for World Wrestling Entertainment on those days.
Kaye's site lists him as Matt Striker, saying he has also performed under names including Matt Martel and Hydro, part of a tag team called Los Lunatics.

Dutch to Exhibit Drawings
Vincent van Gogh
Before he put paint to canvas, Vincent van Gogh worked with pencil and ink, training himself in perspective, composition and the human form.
On Saturday, the Van Gogh Museum puts more than 100 of the artist's 1,200 surviving drawings on exhibition, showing the development of his craftsmanship from 1880 over 10 years of work.
Arranged chronologically, the early black-and-white studies of figures and landscapes evolve over the years into his now familiar impressionist style, with a rhythm of short, rapid strokes, swirls or jabs of a reed pen.
The exhibit draws on more than 50 museums and private collections, showing works that are rarely seen in public because of their sensitivity to light. It includes the only four sketchbooks that remain from the dozens Van Gogh used like notebooks to jot down ideas.
