Purple Gene Reviews
'The Babysitters Seduction'
Purple Gene's review of the movie "The Babysitters Seduction" (1996) Directed by David Burton Morris:
I swore I would never do it again……I have purposefully avoided ever letting my little fingers press 504 on my remote……maybe I should put in a governor that won't allow that channel to ever appear…..I'm talking about the Lifetime channel, of course !!!!!! Or as they say "TV for Women" …Ha Ha Ha Ha ….This is the Network that hires has-been "B" actresses to star in movies with titles like…."The Perfect Wife"….."The Wednesday Woman"…."Sweet Revenge"….."Cyber-Seduction"….and……"The Babysitters Seduction"……..I couldn't help myself…….I pushed the OK button…..I was sucked into ludicrous mediocrity…..alluring banality…..Lifetime Channel……
18 year old Michelle (Keri Russell - "Honey I Blew up the Kid" - "Daddy's Girls" - "When Innocence is Lost" - "Felicity") is about to graduate from High School. She has been babysitting at the Bertrand's for a while. They have a little boy and a little girl that Michelle adores. One day Michelle comes back to the house to pick up the kids piano books and finds Mrs. Bertrand on the kitchen floor……dead !
Bill Bertrand (Stephen Collins - "Stella" - "Scarlett" - "A Woman Named Jackie" (He played JFK)) is understandably upset and so he asks Michelle to help him through his "hard" time….could she babysit, house sit….sit on his LAP……"OH GEE WHIZ" she tells her best girlfriend….."He really needs me….he really likes me….see the necklace he gave me!"….When Michelle's mom (Linda Kelsey - "His Mistress" - "Baby Girl Scott" - "Home Sweet Homeless" - "Lou Grant") asks her about the necklace….Michelle LIES and says Bill let me borrow it for the PROM….I mean this Bill looks way too old and Michelle , with her Curly Keri Russell hair looks way too young…but sure enough…they do the "Lifetime Channel" Tango and we almost get to see a Breast……..Tease…Tease !
Everybody's telling Michelle to leave but she just can't….then we find out that the now dead Mrs. Bertrand had been cheating on the side and was going to leave Bill…Then her lover shows up trying to clear his name ….Well Bill has to kill him….When Detective Kate Jacobs (Phylicia Rashad - "The Wiz" - "Loving Jezebel" - "The Cosby Show" (Mrs. Huxtable)) starts snooping around Bill tries to blow her up in her house… and Bill starts telling his brother in law (who is a cop) that Michelle is Psycho and stealing necklaces.
Well we have the final scenes where Bill gets Michelle alone in the old house and tries to kill her with a BIG knife and claim it was in self-defense….Forget a SPOILER ALERT because I don't want any of you to watch this movie…OK? Michelle jumps out a window into the family pool and Bill dives in with the BIG knife to kill her (in self defense) …but Michelle gets him from behind and the bloody knife sinks to the bottom of the pool along with the necklace that Michelle tears off and tosses…..WOW…I guess she learned a big lesson….." Don't Play House with creepy old wife killers!!!!!!
Purple Gene gives "The Babysitters Seduction" 2 tawdry tinkles out of 10…and I promise I'll never do it again!

When "Ray" star Jamie Foxx won a best actor Oscar in February, he shouted out, "wow, wow, wow, wow!" Now the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is offering him another wow-worthy honor: membership in the organization.
The Academy announced Friday that it has invited Foxx and 111 other notables within the film community to join in 2005.
This year's crop spans the gamut from "Bewitched" comedian Will Ferrell to Mexican heartthrob Gael Garcia Bernal ("The Motorcycle Diaries").
Thirty-three Oscar nominees were asked, including actors Clive Owen ("Closer") and Thomas Haden Church ("Sideways"), actresses Sophie Okonedo ("Hotel Rwanda") and Catalina Sandino Moreno ("Maria Full of Grace"), and screenwriter Paul Haggis ("Million Dollar Baby").

Opens New HQ
George Lucas
A new complex that will house most of "Star Wars" creator George Lucas' empire could be the entertainment industry's most sophisticated digital arts and entertainment center - complete with a stone fountain of Jedi master Yoda at the front door.
The 23-acre complex will include the engine for a "virtual studio" that will allow artists, game developers and directors to collaborate on visual effects and digital images. There also are a few old-fashioned movie theaters, including a 300-seat theater and smaller 65-seat theaters that film editors can use to review film cuts.
Most of the divisions will move to the complex from Marin County - the corporate offices of Lucasfilm Ltd., special effects house Industrial Light & Magic and LucasArts, which produces video games. The center also will house the company's lucrative licensing division.
Lucasfilm will continue to maintain Big Ranch, Skywalker Ranch and the other Marin properties, where any filming will likely take place.

Sale Overturned, Wingnuts To Prevail
KOCE
A state appeals court has overturned a community college's sale of a public television station to a local foundation, ruling it illegally accepted a lower bid to make sure the station didn't go to a televangelist group.
The Coast Community College District must hold a new sale of KOCE-TV, or, "if the district's trustees find the prospect of televangelists eventually acquiring KOCE to be too distasteful, no sale at all," said the opinion Thursday.
The Orange County district violated the law by not selling KOCE-TV to the highest bidder, the court ruled.
Richard Sherman, an attorney for the Texas-based Daystar Television Network, which sued the district and the KOCE-TV Foundation with a claim that it lost the bid because it is a religious network, said the ruling was justified.
The foundation had offered $32 million for the station, based in Golden West College in Huntington Beach, with the balance to be paid over 30 years.
Daystar offered $25.1 million, but in cash. One day after the deadline for bids, it raised its offer to $40 million.

'Beloved' Now An Opera
Toni Morrison
The story of a 19th-century woman who killed her daughter and tried to take the lives of her other children offers a microcosmic look at one of the great, and enduringly painful, tragedies of the American experience: slavery.
Contemporary audiences might not be familiar with the Margaret Garner saga, but in 1856 it was a front-page story that bitterly divided the nation. Garner, enslaved on a Kentucky plantation, attempted to flee to free Ohio with seven members of her family. Facing recapture, Garner tried to kill her brood -- and herself -- rather than return to slavery. Before being caught, she killed her 2 1/2-year-old daughter.
Garner's heart-wrenching story already has been told through Toni Morrison's best-selling novel "Beloved," which earned a Pulitzer Prize for literature and was brought to the screen by Oprah Winfrey, with Jonathan Demme directing. As any aficionado of the form will say, however, the opera stage casts a particular spell of its own, especially when a riveting plot is married to fine music.

Unmitigated Gossip
Cruise Encounters
Katie Holmes may have fallen for it, but Tom Cruise's sci-fi seduction technique scared the bejeezus out of Scarlett Johansson, a source close to the actress says. Weeks before he began wooing his brainwashed bride-to-be, Cruise made repeated phone calls to the 19-year-old starlet-who was then set to co-star with him in Mission Impossible III-imploring her to meet him at the Scientology Celebrity Center in L.A. But when the actress finally agreed, the supposedly professional get-together took an oddly spiritual turn. "[Cruise] took me into this room, which was stifling hot, and was showing me all kinds of info about joining the church," Johansson told our source. "The whole time he didn't even offer me a cookie!" Instead, he offered her dinner-and a glimpse into the Twilight Zone.
After two hours of proselytizing, our source says Cruise opened a door to reveal a second room full of upper-level Scientologists who had been waiting to dine with the pair, at which point the cool-headed ingenue politely excused herself. Soon after the meeting, Johansson dropped out of Mission Impossible III, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts. Asked about the incident, Johansson's momager, Melanie Johansson, referred Radar to a publicist, who did not return calls or emails seeking comment. After striking out with Johansson, Cruise reportedly turned his attentions to 24-year-old Jessica Alba, 22-year-old Kate Bosworth, and 18-year-old Lindsay Lohan, before settling on the 26-year-old Holmes. As far we know, Cruise's War of the Worlds co-star, Dakota Fanning, was never under consideration.

World's Cultural Heritage
Brothers Grimm
The U.N. said Tuesday it has recognized the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales, including Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella, as part of the world's cultural heritage.
The original collection, Children's and Household Tales, or Kinder-und Hausmaerchen in German, was honoured by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a groundbreaking compilation of the European and Oriental fairy tale tradition.
The collection of fairy tales, which gave the world storytelling phrases as "Once upon a time ..." and "They lived happily ever after," were first collected by the linguists Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm between 1812 and 1815. They have since been translated into scores of other languages.

Cash Seized
Ileana Valdez
A Quincy woman who apparently stuffed $46,950 in cash in her bra before trying to board a plane to Texas for plastic surgery has sued a federal agency, demanding the return of her money.
In her suit, Ileana Valdez said a male Drug Enforcement Administration agent told her she had a nice body and didn't need surgery - and then seized the cash, claiming it was drug money.
Valdez, a single mother said in her suit that she has no criminal record and earned the money by selling her Dorchester business and two parcels of property in Boston's Jamaica Plain section.
Anthony Pettigrew, a spokesman for the DEA in Boston, said he could not comment on the lawsuit. But he said federal asset forfeiture laws allow agents to seize suspected drug profits.

Gold Pocket Watch To Auction
Horatio Nelson
The gold watch British naval hero Horatio Nelson had in his pocket when he was shot dead by a French sniper at the height of the Battle of Trafalgar goes on sale in October for the first time in over 200 years.
The Josiah Emery watch is one of only 22 examples of the master watchmaker's timepieces still in existence, and its rarity and history have prompted auction house Sotheby's to give it a price tag of 350,000 pounds ($640,000).
The watch was passed to his brother and sole legal heir William and then on to his daughter Charlotte -- a great favorite with both Nelson and his lover Emma Hamilton.
Charlotte had it mounted in a gold carriage clock case and inscribed with a dedication to Nelson and the instruction that it was to be held in reserve for any of her descendants who joined the navy.

German 'Degenerate Art' Exhibit
Otto Dix & Max Beckmann
German artists Otto Dix and Max Beckmann depicted the calamity of modern war in shocking scenes reminiscent of Goya's devastating etchings of atrocities in the Napoleonic era.
Their riveting collections are being presented at the Neue Galerie museum for German and Austrian art, a one-time show that opens Friday and lasts through Sept. 26.
In The War, Dix's post-First World War portfolio of 50 etchings, he showed the mindless barbarities of trench warfare from the viewpoint of a German soldier caught in the death machine of the front lines, where he fought for four years and kept a notebook of sketches.
Beckmann's The Hell, a dozen lithographs from 1919, show German society unhinged by the war: disfigured veterans returning home to hunger and poverty; war profiteers flaunting riches; reactionaries singing patriotic songs; fanatics sowing unrest in the streets and thugs lynching enemies. The large-format sketches are crammed with human caricatures, and cubist techniques emphasize grotesque figures. Beckmann served for a year in battle zones as a medical orderly before being mustered out for poor health.
With the rise of the Nazis, both Dix and Beckmann were persecuted for "degenerate art" that supposedly sapped German patriotism.
