Re: FDR quote
Hey, Marty!
Hear! Hear!... Ya shoulda put that 'fear' quote in larger BOLD type much as Bart does from time to time... The reminder is needed...
Haven't heard you talk of Dear Old Dad recently. I hope all is well with him and The Babe...
Weather here in SW Michigan has turned from a very hot, muggy spell into a cool, overcast with sprinkles. 61 degrees as I write this with a Canuck breeze from the NE...
I love the daily Zen haiku and picture tremendously... Never let that one go.
Regards to you and The Kid,
BadtotheboneBob
Thanks, Bob!
Between the weather, anomalies he's observed in the local woods, & Chimpy's economy, dear old Dad's been a bit cranky, and not at his most quotable.
The Babe, however, has been happily preoccupied with marrying off another grandchild - they're at the wedding in Baltimore this weekend.
Thanks for asking.

Man With An Opinion
Robert Redford
Robert Redford, who played Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward in "All the President's Men," said he used to speculate on who Deep Throat was and had figured "it probably had to do with the FBI."
Redford said the revelation that former Deputy FBI Director Mark Felt was Deep Throat, the Post's secret informant in the Watergate scandal, has him "waiting to see if anybody is going to connect where we were then and where we are now, because the same elements are absolutely in place, only they're worse. ...
"You can go right down the line (in the Bush administration), there's about 15 issues as strong or as big as the Watergate break-in was that have come and died out," Redford said Thursday in an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune.
He cited the fruitless search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and the "Downing Street memo" suggesting Bush's officials tweaked intelligence to support their invasion plans.
"There are guys out there digging and digging. There are stories appearing every single day," he said. "But is it getting any traction with the public?"
It was 33 years ago Friday - June 17, 1972 - that burglars broke into the Democratic National Committee's offices in the Watergate Hotel in Washington.

Monument Vandalized
Beach Boys
The new state historical landmark dedicated to the Beach Boys last month has already been the target of graffiti vandals.
Beach Boys Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson grew up in Hawthorne. The Wilson home was demolished in the 1980s to make way for the Century Freeway.
The Beach Boys landmark features a stone sculpture of the 1963 "Surfer Girl" album cover and six gold records inlaid around a bronze plaque designating the site as California Historical Landmark No. 1,041.

Hit With Bottle at Party
Leonardo DiCaprio
Leonardo DiCaprio was hit with a bottle while attending a Hollywood party given by Paris Hilton's ex-boyfriend (& video co-star) and needed about a dozen stitches to close a wound near his ear, People Magazine reported on its Web site.
The magazine said DiCaprio was at a party at about 4 a.m. Friday at the home of Rick Salomon when a woman struck him with what appeared to be a beer bottle. No ambulance was called but friends took the actor to a hospital where he received about a dozen stitches, People said.
"While leaving a small private gathering, Leo was attacked by a woman who was trespassing and had been repeatedly asked to leave the property," Sunshine told the magazine. "The attacker struck him with a glass object before being restrained by witnesses."

Wedding News
Gust - Brown
Mayor Jerry Brown, who was twice elected California governor and ran for president three times, ended one of the longest bachelor streaks in American politics Saturday, marrying longtime girlfriend Anne Gust.
It was the first marriage for Gust, 47, a former Gap executive, as well as for Brown, 67, who plans to run for state attorney general next year.
"How fortunate you are to have found each other," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who officiated at the ceremony. "What a treasure it is to have a companion for life."
Guests included former Gov. Gray Davis and Willie Brown, a former speaker of the state Assembly and former San Francisco mayor who is not related to the groom. Former state Treasurer Kathleen Brown, Jerry Brown's sister, was also present.

Grampa Was A Con Man
Giorgio Angelozzi
A lonely Italian pensioner who was "adopted" by a family last year after his pleas for company in classified ads, has absconded leaving behind a big dentist's bill and bounced checks.
Giorgio Angelozzi, 80, skipped out on the family in Bergamo, northern Italy, before a dentist's bill for 2,360 euros ($2,860) arrived. Two checks Angelozzi sent to cover the costs turned out to have been stolen from another family that took him in.
Angelozzi was inundated with offers from as far away as New Zealand, Brazil and the United States before he opted to live with the Riva family.
Police are now hunting for the man who used to live alone with seven cats.

Raid Wrong Duplex
Cops
Police in Nampa, Idaho, raided the wrong duplex, throwing a powerful noisemaking device through the unit's window and standing outside with guns drawn.
"I guess we're going to have to seek psychological help, I hate to say that," John Simpson said Thursday. "I'm not nuts or anything, but I'm still shaking. Put a shotgun next to your ear and pull the trigger to get an idea of the noise."
A Nampa police officer had confused Simpson's window for that of residents who share a duplex with the 62-year-old Vietnam veteran, Assistant Chief Tim Vincent said. Police had intended to serve a search warrant in the adjacent unit. The officer threw the so-called "flash-bang" device in the window, breaking the glass and setting off a loud noise and light.
Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms officials assisted.
Police subsequently arrested Simpson's 20-year-old neighbor. They allege he had 4 ounces of marijuana with the intent to deliver.

Return to N.D.'s Chase Lake
Pelicans
From an airplane a half-mile above white pelican nesting grounds here, the giant birds are hard to miss. Measuring 6 feet from bill to tail and weighing up to 20 pounds each, the birds look like moving patches of snow on the islands of Chase Lake. Wildlife officials estimate 18,850 breeding adults have returned to this 4,385-acre refuge in central North Dakota, which had been known for a century as the home of the largest nesting colony of white pelicans in North America. But this time last year, the nesting grounds were empty, leaving an ornithological mystery that biologists say may never be solved.
Nearly 28,000 birds took off last summer. The rookery was littered with eggs and chicks that did not survive.
Biologists have been doing aerial surveys of the nesting grounds since 1972, using photographs scanned into a computer program to count the exact number of breeding birds. This year's breeding population is the lowest since 1997, when 18,364 birds were counted.

In Memory
Lon McCallister
Lon McCallister, whose brief but prolific acting career started with small roles in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and developed in to supporting roles in popular movies such as "Winged Victory," has died. He was 82.
He died June 11 of heart failure at his home in the Lake Tahoe area, said his brother, Lynn.
After appearing in more than 40 films, McCallister left acting at age 30 to invest in real estate. He owned homes and apartment buildings in the Los Angeles area, and recently bought property in Lake Tahoe.
At 13, he had an uncredited role in "Romeo and Juliet" with lead actress Norma Shearer and lead actor Leslie Howard. The film's director, George Cukor, became a close friend and later gave McCallister a supporting role as a pilot in "Winged Victory," which is based on the Broadway production.
McCallister's boyish looks mostly cast him in roles playing wholesome characters, including one of the schoolboys in the 1938 Tom Sawyer film when he was just 15. That same year, he landed a small role in "Judge Hardy's Children," which starred Mickey Rooney.
Perhaps the film that led to even bigger roles was the 1943 "Stage Door Canteen" in which he played a shy GI opposite Katharine Hepburn, Harpo Marx and other stars of that period.
"Lon was one of the most caring men - sensitive toward others - I've ever known," actress Allene Roberts, who met McCallister while they were filming the 1947 thriller "The Red House," said this week.
In addition to his brother, McCallister, born Herbert Alonzo McCallister Jr., is survived by his sister, Kathleen McCallister Price.
